J. Clair High J. Clair High, 90, of Stevens, passed away unexpectedly on Saturday, December 23, 2023, at his home.

He was born in Ephrata to the late Levi and Katie (Good) High and was the husband of the late Shirley Ann (Weaver) High.

Clair was a lifetime member of Blainsport Mennonite Church. He was involved with the egg industry for 76 years. He was still buying, selling, and hand delivering eggs several days a week.

He enjoyed softball, baseball, golf, bowling, and playing cards. Family was very important to him.

He is survived by five sons, Gary L., husband of Cecelia (Leed) High of Elizabethtown, Jay L., husband of Star (Moser) High of Port St. Lucie, FL, Kevin L., husband of Holly (Dillman) High of

Denver, Curtis L., husband of Joan (Higgins) High of Stevens, Darrell L., husband of Cindy (Werner) High of Cornwall; a daughter-in-law, Connie (Becker) High of Reinholds; 20 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; three siblings, Fred, husband of Candy High of Denver, Dale High of Gordonville and June Horst of Clay.

Myrtle Marie (Linder­ man) Council, 99, Ephrata, passed away on Tuesday, December 12.

She was the wife of the late Conway Beal Council.

She is survived by a daughter, Elizabeth Marie Council; four grandchildren; six great­grandchildren; and two sisters: Louise Bitler Pullis, and Harriet Ruth Burkhart, wife of Dick.

Robert L. Wickenheiser, 82, husband of Ann, Lititz, passed away on Tuesday,

December 12.

Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons: Mark Wickenheiser; Jon Wickenheiser, husband of Angel; and Jeremy Wickenheiser, husband of Michele; two daughters: Eliese Hersh, wife of Dale, and Maria Bryce, wife of Bryan; 15 grandchildren; 12 great­grandchildren; and a sister, Deborah Strick, wife of Ron, Florida.

A viewing was held on Tuesday, December 26, 2023 at Blainsport Mennonite Church, 85 S. Blainsport Road, Reinholds. An additional viewing was held on Wednesday, December 27, 2023 at the church, followed by his funeral service, with Pastor Eric Marshall officiating. Interment took place in Blainsport Mennonite Cemetery.

Sarah R. “Sally” Zoller Sarah R. “Sally” Zoller, 72, of Stevens, passed away Thursday, December 21, 2023, at the Lancaster General Hospital. Born and raised in Churchtown, Sally was a daughter of the late Wilfred P. and Catherine (Hawk) Mattis and the loving wife of 32-years to Donald C. Zoller until his passing in 2016.

Sally’s family moved to Ephrata in the late ‘60’s and she graduated from Ephrata High School, class of 1969.

Not long after her twins were born, Sally became an Advertising Clerk for Science Press and worked there for over 20 years. She later worked at ATC in New Holland and Lancaster as an Administrative Assistant.

Sally loved going to auctions, particularly benefit auctions.

She was affectionally known as Mama Max at the auctions where her son would auctioneer. Everyone knew Sally, she was friendly, warm,

outgoing, and made friends with strangers in an instant.

Sally always had a joke to tell and a smile to share. She enjoyed following WWE wrestling and often announced the upcoming match to her family with “Guess what! Wrestling tonight!”. Her enthusiasm was contagious, she could find great joy in the smallest things. She loved her dogs, even bred toy poodles for a while, and her sweet baby, Shantel, was always by her

When greeting someone “Good Morning,” they complain about their health, or when they bid someone “Good Night,” they say they must take something to sleep. Some complain about standing too long, others wish their cushion was softer. Perhaps they got up on the wrong side of the bed.

If you look at them sideways, they become angry. Why do people behave in this manner? About the same problems some laugh, others complain. It seems to me, it’s the attitude we take. If we look for trouble, we can find it. *** This week before Thanksgiving, we present two recent poems by Anna von Bannwill. They make a delightful pair ­ one about life in general, and one about a certain attitude toward the vicissitudes of life.

Our poet reports to us that ES LEWE was written in retrospection after she attained her 68th birthday. She is grateful for all the blessings in her life and recalls the clouds and the healing power of time and faith. Most importantly, she is happy to be alive and well.

GRAUNSE, which she wrote on September 5, 1985 stands in opposition to ES LEWE and she prefers the latter to the former. The former brings out the negative attitudes in people. “Graunse” was a familiar word in the dialect years ago, but we are not very happy when someone applies it to us. If one has a sense of humor ­ as Anna von Bannwill does ­ the “Graunsers” can be amusing. Anna von Bannwill and Bischli­Gnippli hope that we’ll never be called “old Graunsers.” *** An S.O.S. to all our faithful readers! • Paws to Read - Saturday, January, 13 & 27 from 10:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Children can practice their readingaloud skills by reading their favorite stories to therapytrained dogs. Register online two weeks prior to the program.

• 3 Week Yoga Storytime – for children ages 3-5 Wednesday, January 10 to Wednesday, January 24 at 6:00 p.m. Yoga Storytime is a safe and playful way for children to be active through yoga poses. Participants are asked to attend all three weeks. Each class is limited to 9 children ages 3-5.

• Cruise into Kindergarten - Monday, January 15 at 6:30 p.m. This Pennsylvania early literacy program is based on the national “Every Child Ready to Read” program. Families can register on Monday, January 8, 2024 beginning at 9:00 a.m. using the library’s website calen­ dar. Each storytime will last 30 minutes and will include songs, stories, nursery rhymes and play­ time. The nine-week session will run Monday, January 22 through Thursday, March 21. Neighborhood Santa Helps Local Families

As Neighborhood Santa closes their 16th year helping local children and their families have a little Christmas, they would like to give a huge thank you to those that continue to support them.

On a special note: a lot of new restaurants have come to the Ephrata area, however, since it was built here, Applebee’s has been here supporting local families in any way they can from Veterans Day meals, backpacks for local students, Neighborhood Santa, Stockings for Soldiers, plus so many other community give backs Many tokens of gratitude to the Denver Fire Company for the use of their fire hall.

Biblical Message

One That Had Authority

by Pastor Cornelius R. Stam “And they were astonished at His doctrine, for He taught them as one that had authority, and not as the scribes.” —Mark 1:22 At our Lord’s first ministry in Galilee, His teaching immediately drew attention because it was so different

from that of the scribes.

There were two reasons for this.

First, the scribes were the Bible teachers of the day. They expounded the Law, the Psalms, and the Prophets—but like us, could expound only what was written.

It was not so with our Lord. Here was One greater, infinitely greater, than Moses or any of the Old Testament writers. Here was the long­promised Prophet of whom Moses was but a type (Deut. 18:15). Thus He could say: “It hath been said… But I say unto you…” and “Verily, verily, I say unto you.” His hearers were asked to believe because He

had spoken, and somehow they felt His authority and were astonished.

But there is another reason why His teaching is said here to have been “with authority,

and not as the scribes.”

The scribes, if true men of God, would have pointed to the Scriptures, saying confidently: “Thus saith the Lord.” But they were not

condemned them with His series of bitter “woes” and called them a “generation of vipers” (Matt. 23:13­ 33). Their “fear of man” and their love of “the praise of men” was an insult to God, whose ministers they were. As a result, these men who would “devour widows’ houses” would also “for a pretense make long prayers” (Ver. 14). Where morals were concerned, they would “strain at a gnat” but “swallow a camel” (Ver. 24). Like zealous ritualists, they would carefully “clean the outside of the cup and of the platter,” but within they themselves were “full of extortion and excess” (Ver. 25). Our Lord likened them to “whited sepulchres,”

free men. They belonged to a religious system which expected them to teach only “the traditions of the elders.”

They did not dare to proclaim what to them appeared to be the correct interpretation of any passage of Scripture.

They could only say: “The fathers, our rabbis,” etc., “say that this passage means so and so.” But this bondage was not forced upon them. It was born of pride of position and wealth, and an ambition to rise even higher in the graces of the Establishment.

There was no good excuse why they should not have blessed the children of Israel with a ministry which rang with a clear, firm “Thus saith the Lord.”

which within were “full of dead men’s bones and of all uncleanness” (Ver. 27).

Our Lord called these religious leaders, sincerely revered by so many, “fools and blind…blind guides” (Vers. 17,24). Yet in their blindness they were very zealous for the Establishment. In their opposition to the truth, they “shut up the kingdom of heaven against men,” not entering in themselves and hindering those who were interested from entering in (Ver. 13). And in their zeal for their own religious system they “compassed sea and land to make one proselyte” (Ver. 15).

Naturally, this robbed them of any spiritual power they might have possessed.

Naturally, the people were “astonished” when, by contrast, they heard Christ teach “with authority.”

Surely all of us who teach the Word today should ask ourselves: “Do I teach with authority, the authority of the Word, rightly divided, or do I teach as the scribes?

Do I teach in the liberty and power of the Holy Spirit or am I bound by the creed of my denomination?”

Men called of God to be teachers of the truth can, alas, become “blind guides,” involved in the gravest of sins because they exalt man above God. May we rather remain keenly aware of Satan’s devices to neutralize and destroy our ministry,

Denver Lions Student Of The Month The Denver Lions Club recently recognized Ryan Blocksom, of Denver, as Student of the Month for October. Ryan is the son of Lora and Justin Blocksom.

An accomplished student, Ryan was recognized with an Eagle Excellence Award and has maintained a 4.0 grade point average since the sixth grade. He was also recognized as Student of the Month in various subjects and focuses his studies in the areas of digital filmmaking, photography and design; along with language studies in Spanish and German. Beyond his studies, Ryan participates in Global Scholars, Bible study leadership, and playing trombone in the band. He also made a trip to Germany with the GAPP Exchange Program.

Outside of school, Ryan attends Reading City Church and is active in the youth group at Petra Church, helping to plan

events and activities. His work experience includes working at a produce stand at Fairgrounds Market, videographer for Woodcrest Retreat, and working at Kyma Seafood Grill.

If we, like Paul, can say this sincerely we too will “speak with authority, and not as the scribes,” not, indeed, with inherent authority as did our Lord, but surely with delegated authority, as the representatives of God, the ambassadors of Christ.

Miriam Martin is a strongwilled and God-fearing 8th grader. A few of her favorite things are the color yellow, the scripture passage Joshua 1:9, math, and tigers. Miriam has attended LAMS since elementary and plans to stay here for high school. She is a distinguished honor roll student and loves to learn.

Miriam is in student council, LAMS theater, and volleyball.

She loves reading, acting, and practicing piano in her free time. Miriam goes to Meckville Mennonite Church and loves to help on the worship team here at school. Her role model is her mom because she is kind, loving, has a strong faith, and is perseverent. Miriam would like to be an actress when she grows up. She would like to work with Servant Stage or even on Broadway if it is the Lord’s will. She would like to go to an acting college to study performing arts, or possibly Harvard if she can get an academic scholarship.

She would love to play a lead character in any future theater opportunities she will encounter. Her greatest accomplishments are getting all A+’s in quarter one and getting one of the main parts in the middle school’s production Night at the Library here at LAMS.
