I have loved theatre since my first pantomime as a small child.
I am thrilled that the 2023 Season is rich with Australian stories that celebrate who we are and what we can be as a nation.
Our theatre sits on the unceded lands of our First Nations people – the oldest living culture on the planet, whose cultural practices are deeply embedded in the arts. Lore and law handed down through song, dance, ceremony, art and storytelling. This year’s program builds on significant Indigenous events of 2022, when we hosted the Koori Knockout and NSW Corroboree. Three works celebrate, champion, and honour our traditional owners’ culture with traditional and modern narratives, dance and comedy.
The End of Winter is a new play that engages with a subject very close to my heart. Writer Noëlle Janaczewska’s work addresses our climate crisis from a feminist perspective exploring the subject of changing weather. I think it will be a poignant way to reflect on our last three years of natural disasters.
I wonder what you will pick as your ‘must not miss’ highlights for the 2023 Season. I encourage you to organise your friends and family to make the most of this great venue where we can make memories through the wonderful shows that are bound to make you think, laugh and sing out loud, inspire and uplift you.

KAREN PATTERSON AND THE SHOALHAVEN ENTERTAINMENT CENTRE TEAM
“WELCOME TO THE 2023 SEASON,
where we invite you to be the first in line to experience an exciting collection of quintessentially Australian stories focusing on the identities and the dynamic cultures that made and make us.
This Season brings to our stages a nation’s narratives that are rich, relevant and contemporary.
Some of the productions are based on perennial favourites we revisit time and again that are adored by families across many generations.
Others have been embedded in our popular culture by enduring stars of music and literature.
It’s exciting to have stories anchored in the lore of our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people being presented on our main stage.
In addition to connecting our audiences with the best narratives, we will also present works produced by some of the most highly respected theatre-makers and musicians in the land.
We’re rapt to have Circa returning to our venue, and to have Bangarra Dance Theatre, Bell Shakespeare and the Australian Chamber Orchestra making their debut performances.
We look forward to seeing you at the theatre.

KARIN SCHAUPP & FLINDERS QUARTET
Presented in association with Musica Viva Australia
A stunning program delivered with style and precision.
Music sparks emotion like nothing else; live music especially so. Here’s a concert full of feelings: loss, longing, love, and a bit of foot-stomping fandango flamboyance. And your musical guides are world class.
Classical guitar is a beautiful but famously difficult instrument to master. Most players sit very still in utmost concentration – which is why Karin Schaupp stands out. With incredible warmth and expressiveness, she welcomes us into her emotional world, and we leave enriched and heartened.
Karin is joined on stage by the Flinders Quartet. Renowned for unpretentious brilliance and with two decades of experience in old music and new, they are one of Australia’s most loved chamber music ensembles.

LIVE ON STAGE!
Adapted from the JUST book series written by Andy Griffiths and illustrated by Terry Denton Written by Robin Goldsworthy
Andy Griffiths’ awesome JUST series mashed together in a theatrical rodeo.
Every year Andy’s school holds a short story competition and every year Andy writes an awesome, amazing, captivating, TERRIFYING story. But every year Andy is robbed of winning, thwarted by some dumb story about kittens and sunshine. How is it possible?!
Because Mr Rowe is against him, and he wouldn’t know a good story if it jumped off the page and bit him on the bum. Anyway, that’s all in the past. This year Andy knows that the prize is within his grasp. All he has to do is write the most INCREDIBLE story the world has ever read! Easy!
JUST (tricking, annoying, stupid, crazy, disgusting, shocking, doomed) LIVE ON STAGE! takes on the wonderful world of the JUST books by Andy Griffiths, vividly and hilariously bringing them to life on the stage with everything from invisibility pills and Mudmen, to vomiting dogs and death-defying balloon rides.

THE END OF WINTER
By Noëlle Janaczewska. Directed by Kate Gaul.
A beautiful new production that asks, will climate change erase winter leaving it to exist only in fairy tales, paintings, and historical accounts?
In hot, bushfire-prone Australia our winters are becoming warmer and shorter. The End of Winter is about loss and resilience. It’s about the places one can search for cold weatherplaces that can be reached via public transport and the imagination.
Multi-award-winning writer Noëlle Janaczewska’s new work for the stage speaks to our current climate crisis. Written in the wake of the devastating 2019 bushfires, it asks: What’s happening to winter?
The themes and ideas contained within The End of Winter lean into the most significant issue of our time – the changing climate and the loss of seasons.

TWELFTH NIGHT
By William Shakespeare Directed by Heather Fairbairn
‘If music be the food of love, play on.’ Act 1, Scene 1.
Viola is shipwrecked and believes her twin Sebastian lost to the ocean. Washed up in a strange new land, determined to survive, Viola disguises herself as a man named Cesario and finds work with Duke Orsino, only to fall head over heels in love with him. But Orsino is in love with Olivia, who – grieving for her brother – refuses all offers of romance. Until, that is, she meets Cesario for the first time. A whirlwind of passion ensues, leaving no one unaffected, not even Olivia’s prudish housekeeper Malvolia, played by Jane Montgomery Griffiths (A Midsummer Night’s Dream).
Heather Fairbairn’s fresh retelling of Shakespeare’s romantic comedy is a dark collision of hidden identities and unrequited love. Featuring all-new music by Sarah Blasko, Twelfth Night ultimately asks us to find light in the darkness.

ORAVA QUARTET RENAISSANCE TO ROMANCE
Bringing breathtaking intensity to the classics of the string quartet canon. The Orava Quartet has been hailed by Limelight as “the most exciting young quartet on the block”. Known for their genuinely thrilling performances, the Quartet – brothers Daniel and Karol Kowalik (violin and cello), violinist David Dalseno and violist Thomas Chawner – bring their unique sound and breathtaking intensity to the classics of string quartet music.
In their Shoalhaven debut, the Quartet perform Mozart’s masterful ‘String Quartet in B Flat Major’, showcasing the beauty of the cello, in a transcendent work. Alongside this are two glorious pieces of sacred music from the Renaissance period: Tomás Luis de Victoria’s angelic ‘O Magnum Mysterium’ and William Byrd’s divine ‘Ave Verum Corpus’, inspired by one of the most sacred texts of the Catholic faith. Rounding out the program is Borodin’s sublime ‘String Quartet no.2’. This romantic masterpiece - a moving dedication from the composer to his wife, to celebrate their wedding anniversary - retains all its charm and memorable melodies centuries later.

THE BEGGARS CALIFORNIA DREAMING
Take a trip back to the easy, breezy music of the 1970s Californian coast.
In the 1960s & 1970s, the hills of Los Angeles came alive with a new sound. Laurel Canyon was the rural, rugged and cheap suburb that became a beacon for dreamers and artists –and a counterculture movement of music was born.
This amazing group of young singers and songwriters were at the dawn of their legendary careers. Fleetwood Mac, The Eagles, Linda Ronstadt, Crosby Stills & Nash, Neil Young, Carole King, James Taylor, Joni Mitchell, Jackson Browne, America, The Doors, The Byrds and many others made their home in the rural idyll of Laurel Canyon.
Come on a soulful and sun-drenched sojourn to the that laid-back West Coast sound that is still so loved today, with The Beggars.
