OUR 2020 SEASON IS HERE The Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre is a place where our community can come and play, to enjoy the best of local, national and international performances right in the heart of the beautiful Shoalhaven.

Here at Shoalhaven City Council we have a strong commitment to bring arts and culture to our community – and we do that because it’s a proven way to keep people connected, happy and healthy.

The Shoalhaven Entertainment Centre is pivotal to the performing arts scene in our region and plays a vital role in bringing highly respected companies and performers to our stages.

PLAYFULLY YOURS is the theme of our 2020 Season – at a time when escaping to the theatre for a couple of hours has possibly never been quite so appealing.

Perhaps it’s the darkness of the theatre that helps us switch off mundanity and switch on to a more creative, playful world.

We’re excited to present our 2020 Season which includes some of Australia’s most highly regarded companies including the Sydney Symphony Orchestra, Bell Shakespeare and Circa.

Our year of music, dance, musical theatre, puppetry, physical theatre, comedy, drama and puppetry has a strong focus on escaping the everyday and rediscovering your playful self.

Morning Matinee Tenori presents

Beyond the Sea Join these classically-trained Aussie tenors on a musical journey around the world.

With a combined sixty years’ international experience in the industry, three of Australia’s powerhouse singers, David Kidd, Craig Atkinson and Andrew Pryor are polished professionals who know exactly how to put on a dynamic, uplifting and hugely entertaining show.

Individually, they have beautiful voices. Together they sing like the band of brothers they are, with the camaraderie and precision that comes with more than a decade of harmonising together.

They’ve performed at renowned venues such as London’s Royal Albert Hall and the Sydney Opera House, and worked with many of this country’s finest orchestras. It’s now time for Tenori to bring to the Shoalhaven songs from Spain, Cuba, France, Italy, Norway, England, the U.S., Australia, and more.

H.M.S. Pinafore Music by Arthur Sullivan, Libretto by W.S. Gilbert.

Set sail on the high seas with Gilbert & Sullivan’s beloved comedy of star-crossed lovers, mismatched marriages and mistaken identities.

Award-winning director, Kate Gaul, makes her Hayes Theatre Co debut with this re-imagined, gender-bending, hypertheatrical and kinky take on this Gilbert & Sullivan classic.

This nautical caper overflows with infectious tunes such as I am the Monarch of the Sea, I’m Called Little Buttercup and He is an Englishman. H.M.S. Pinafore is a sharp satire of the English social hierarchical system of the Victorian age.

Pinafore’s extraordinary popularity was followed by the similar success of a series of Gilbert and Sullivan works, including The Pirates of Penzance and The Mikado. Don’t miss out on this rollicking farce and get set for some hysterical hijinks on the high seas.

Van Morrison’s Masterpieces Astral Weeks + Moondance.

Vince Jones & The Astral Orchestra.

When The Beatles stopped touring and progressed to psychedelic rock, and Dylan left folk and went electric, Van Morrison hired some of New York’s finest jazz musicians and recorded two of the classic albums of that golden era – Astral Weeks and Moondance.

Both albums had enormous impact on aspiring musicians and singers around the world.

Australian jazz legend, Vince Jones was one of them. Now, Jones, a remarkable jazz interpreter, has invited a selection of Australia’s finest jazz/rock musicians to form The Astral Orchestra. His Music Director, Matt McMahon joins him in this homage to Morrison’s extraordinary repertoire; his most acclaimed album, the magical Astral Weeks – a poetic, mercurial blend of jazz, folk and blues – plus the wonderful soul and jazz influenced Moondance.

Morning Matinee Promac Productions Australia presents

The Sounds of Rodgers & Hammerstein Show stopping songs from the legendary team.

One of Australia’s leading production companies Promac brings us this new work which highlights the amazing writing team of Rodgers & Hammerstein. The show, complete with narrative, delves into one of the most successful musical writing teams the world has ever known.

Starring Michelle Fitzmaurice and company, this production will contain hits from iconic musicals such as Carousel, South Pacific, The Sound of Music, Oklahoma, and many more.

Michelle is an award-winning graduate from the West Australian Academy of Performing Arts and most recently performed alongside Gary McDonald and Lisa McCune in the stage musical Guys & Dolls. She also toured in Promac’s Waltsing Australia production around Australia and starred alongside John Bowles in The Peter Allen Songbook.

PLAYLIST is full of suburban dreams and pop star fantasies. Five incredible young women talk about their favourite female pop stars and how these narratives inspire and shape their personal worlds in this genre-defying dance theatre work.

The extraordinary cast represent a unique and powerful cross section of emerging artists in contemporary Australia, featuring Ebube Uba, a Nigerian-Australian actor and dancer; Neda Taha, a Tongan-Iraqi-Australian hip hop dancer; May Tran a Vietnamese-Australian slam poet; comedic actor Tasha O’Brien; and Croatian-Australian pop star Mara Knezevic.

Australia’s premier orchestra, the Sydney Symphony, returns to the Shoalhaven.

The riches of the Venetian empire weren’t just silk and gold – they were her artists and musicians.

PROGRAM

Claudio Monteverdi, pioneer of opera, was composer-inresidence at the Basilica San Marco, a post held earlier by the innovative Giovanni Gabrieli. These masters established a uniquely Venetian sound – deeply affecting, solemn, and specially conceived to resound in glittering interiors.

The intricate interplay of voices in Vivaldi’s concerto for four violins is so compelling that even J.S. Bach loved it. Darren Coggan is one of Australia’s most exciting and diverse artists, a masterful storyteller with a knack of weaving fascinating and perceptive tales through his songs. With laughter and reflection, Darren sings timeless tunes that the whole world sings along with.

In an intimate performance around a campfire, Darren introduces songs from his award-winning albums and celebrates the artists he has remarkably re-created throughout his career. These include Glen Campbell, James Taylor, John Denver and of course his hugely successful and critically acclaimed portrait of Cat Stevens, Peace Train - The Cat Stevens Story.

From humble beginnings, strumming a guitar by ‘the ‘Bidgee’ river in his beloved hometown of Wagga Wagga, to selling out the Sydney Opera House Concert Hall with Peace Train, Darren has forged a unique, diverse career that has seen him embrace with aplomb the Australian country music, musical theatre and television industries.

Shipwrecked and separated 25 years earlier, two sets of long-lost twins miraculously find themselves in the same city, on the same day. What could possibly go wrong for these bumbling twins?

At the heart of this tale of comedic misfortune is an old man who is searching for his lost children, and has found himself in the fight of his life… to save his life. As far-fetched coincidences unfold, chaotic hilarity ensues and a man’s life could be saved — if only everything would go to plan.

After a day of mistaken identity leading to unfair thrashings, wrongful arrests and false charges of infidelity, robbery, madness and even demonic possession, can the twins possibly reunite and live happily ever after?

This is a beautiful story about reunion, wrapped up in an evening of entertainment and laughter.

Edward the Emu Based on the picture books by Sheena Knowles and Rod Clement.

The award-winning Monkey Baa team bring to the stage a new imagining of the classic Australian books.

From the producers of Possum Magic. Edward is bored with his lot. Being the only emu at the zoo has left him feeling glum and under the impression that the grass is greener in everyone else’s enclosure. Maybe being a seal, or a lion, or a snake might be a better option in life for a lonely bird? Convinced that the other creatures are more popular, Edward breaks ranks and goes to find the fun.

Meanwhile the Keepers are in hot pursuit, hunting high and low to relocate their crowd-pleasing, much-loved feathered attraction.

Edward stays one step ahead until he’s ready to head home; concluding that being an emu might be just right after all. Back at HIS pen, a very shocking but welcome surprise awaits... he’s been replaced by the rather wonderful Edwina the Emu!

Tickets are issued for reserved seating in the Studio and Auditorium unless otherwise stated.

CONCESSION/UNDER 30 (U30)/ CHILDREN/STUDENT TICKET PRICES Discounted prices are available for selected shows for Pensioner Concession Card holders, Seniors’ Card holders and full-time students. For children’s shows where there is a Student Group 8+ price, the concession price only applies to Pensioners and Seniors, a single student/child must pay the regular price. Proof of entitlement must be included when booking and may also be requested prior to admission to the theatre.

U30 tickets are not available online.

TICKET FEES

No transaction fee applies for counter bookings. A $6 transaction fee applies to telephone bookings and a $2.50 transaction fee applies to online bookings. Postage (if required) is $5 per order. Members do not pay phone transaction or postage fees. These fees are valid at time of printing.

REFUNDS

Tickets cannot be refunded after purchase except if an event is cancelled, rescheduled or significantly relocated as outlined in the Live Performance Australia Ticketing Code of Practice. For more details visit www.liveperformance.com.au

EXCHANGING TICKETS

Patrons are charged $4.50 per transaction, per exchange, and original tickets must be returned to the Box Office at least 24 hours prior to the earliest performance. PARKING

Free car parking is available at the venue or in surrounding car parks and streets, but can be quite limited during business hours and peak times. Patrons should allow approximately 30 minutes to park and be seated.

LATECOMERS

Until there is a suitable break in the performance, latecomers will not be admitted to the Studio or Auditorium.

CAMERAS AND RECORDING EQUIPMENT

Due to copyright requirements and to ensure an enjoyable theatre experience for all patrons, cameras and recording equipment are not permitted in the Studio or Auditorium.

MOBILE PHONES

Out of consideration for the artists and fellow patrons, mobile phones, audible paging devices and alarm watches must be turned off while in the Studio and Auditorium.

DRESS STANDARD

Most events have no stated dress code. Best advice is to dress to suit the type of event you are attending, but “neat casual” is generally a good guide.
