DANCE

Dance Makers Collective

THE RIVOLI Directed by Miranda Wheen

A CELEBRATION OF SOCIAL LIFE BEFORE SOCIAL MEDIA. From the early 1930s to the late 1960s, the Rivoli Dance Palace in Parramatta was Western Sydney’s favourite dance hall. Demolished in 1973 to make way for an office development, now nothing remains of ‘The Riv’ except the stories of the people who danced there. Featuring some of Australia’s best dancers and a stellar live band, Dance Makers Collective’s The Rivoli is an immersive dance hall meets dance theatre performance. Throughout this work, you’ll hear the voices of people who danced at The Rivoli, as well as the voices of those who dance now, in this town. Your town. A hit at Sydney Festival 2020, this joyous production invites you and your favourite dance partner to be swept into a mesmerising exploration of mid-century nightlife, desire and social connection. KIDS SHOW

That Science Gang

THE ALPHABET OF AWESOME SCIENCE A SCIENTIFIC RACE THROUGH THE ALPHABET Join professors Lexi Con and Noel Edge (aka the Word Nerd and the Science Freak) for a thrilling voyage through the alphabet – where great big chewy sesquipedalian words inspire mind-blowing scientific surprises. Professor Lexi Con has curated a curious collection of her favourite words (one for every letter of the alphabet). Each word provides Professor Noel Edge with an inspirational jumping-off point for 26 quirky scientific demonstrations – that squish, squirt, float, fly, erupt and explode. Together, this dad joke-quipping, prank-pulling pair of polished professors strut their stuff in a performance that’s equal parts explosive, messy, spectacular, hilarious, fascinating, and gross. Every show is completely different, with audiences determining the order in which the letters are revealed and explored. Plus, did we mention, this is a race? The alphabetical, scientifical clock is counting down! Will this plucky pair of professors complete their mind-blowing experiments in time?

FINE MUSIC

Sydney Symphony Orchestra

SHINING BRIGHTLY Inspired by Bach

THE SYDNEY SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA PERFORMS MUSIC BY BACH, THE MASTER OF THE BAROQUE STYLE, AND THE GREAT COMPOSERS HE INSPIRED. Like his father Johann Sebastian, CPE Bach was one of the most celebrated composers of his day, and his voice was just as original. Written as music evolved from Baroque to Classical, his ‘Symphony in A’ is, in equal parts, opulent and bright – a masterful progression of his father’s style, superbly heard in Johann Sebastian’s ‘Concerto for Oboe and Violin’. This shimmering example of what made the older Bach the master of the Baroque is also an opportunity for Sydney Symphony soloists to shine. Inspired by both Bachs, as well as Mozart and Haydn, ‘Mendelssohn’s String Symphony No. 7’ completes this captivating performance. While there are musical nods to the old masters throughout, this work’s infectious happiness is the composer’s music at its most glorious. Program CPE BACH Symphony in A JS BACH Concerto for Oboe and Violin MENDELSSOHN String Symphony No.7

THE GRIGORYAN BROTHERS This is Us

A MUSICAL REFLECTION OF AUSTRALIA

FRIDAY 5 AUGUST, 8PM

Acclaimed guitarists Slava and Leonard Grigoryan have created a suite of music inspired by objects personally selected from the National Museum of Australia’s vast collection, tracing Australia’s diverse and complex history.

THEATRE Studio

Each composition focuses on a particular object, projected during the performance to enhance the audience experience. Among them: a 65,000-year-old ochre of the Madjebebe rock shelter, a convict love token, and a cricket bat from the famed Sir Donald Bradman. Incorporating all their influences from classical to jazz and contemporary music and performed on a variety of guitars, This Is Us is a personal declaration from Slava and Leonard, that this music, composed during lockdown with each living in different states, is a new direction for them. The intangible virtuosity that has solidified this duo as some of the finest musicians of their generation shines through in this stunning original work, inspired by Australia.

INTIMATE, HARMONISED STORYTELLING, UNDERPINNED BY INTRICATE GUITAR. Animal in Hiding is the first release from a collaboration between Lior, one of Australia’s most established and critically acclaimed singer/songwriters, together with exciting emerging artist Domini Forster. The pair developed a creative partnership over six years touring together. Initially Domini toured as Lior’s support act, then as a guest vocalist and now as co-writer on their debut EP Animal in Hiding. While Lior and Domini began writing the songs in late 2019, much of the material was developed during Melbourne’s long lockdown, over Zoom from their respective homes. The title track, originally written about the isolation of winter, became the prophetic seed of the project. Animal in Hiding features songs that are rooted in expressive storytelling. Underpinned by intricate guitar, Lior and Domini’s close vocal harmonies are the focal point, harking back to the iconic folk duos of the 60s.

THEATRE/MUSIC

WITH LOVE, AMADEUS Narrator - John Bell & Piano - Simon Tedeschi

A THRILLING NEW COLLABORATION BETWEEN NATIONAL LIVING TREASURE, JOHN BELL AO OBE AND INTERNATIONALLY ACCLAIMED PIANIST, SIMON TEDESCHI. Nothing is more revealing of a person’s character than their private letters, especially if they are not intended for publication. Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s letters are candid, emotional, hilarious, and heartbreaking. We follow his precarious fortunes, his triumphs and hardships, his reliance on fickle patronage, his occasional penury, his cheeky letters to his cousin and his desperation to please a tyrannical father. Australian theatre legend John Bell traces the life and career of Mozart, reading extensively from his letters, along with insights made by some of his contemporaries. Setting the soundtrack to the young composer’s life, extraordinary concert pianist Simon Tedeschi performs a range of Mozart’s exhilarating music for piano, including some of his best-loved works such as his Fantasia in D minor (K.397), Twinkle Twinkle variations, and his Rondo Alla Turca (Turkish march). With Love, Amadeus shines the spotlight once more on one of classical music’s enduring heroes, in another entertaining collaboration between two of Australia’s leading artists, John Bell AO OBE and Simon Tedeschi. MORNING MATINEE

CHOOSE YOUR OWN (PIANO) ADVENTURE Starring Andrea Lam

A PERFORMANCE WHERE THE AUDIENCE PLAYS CURATOR! The way we listen to music evolves with new technologies. More than anything, music is a way to connect and to make us feel and think differently. To explore this, award-winning pianist Andrea Lam throws open the doors to an interactive, ever-changing experience with Choose Your Own (Piano) Adventure. The audience ‘chooses its own musical adventure’ determining the playlist from a selection of works by composers ranging from J. S. Bach, Frederic Chopin, Claude Debussy, and George Gershwin to Bill Evans – and more. A list of musical choices will be revealed to ticketholders a few weeks prior to the performance. Interwoven through the concert Lam performs Schubert’s breathtaking Sonata in A major, D. 95. This large-scale work encapsulates beauty, nostalgia, grandeur, intimacy, melancholy, joy, stillness and whimsy - all of the elements explored through the audience’s selection of works, whichever they will be.
