2021–2022 REPORT ON GIVING

The Sacred Heart Greenwich logo is inspired by the version used by the Society of the Sacred Heart and illustrates our relationship to Sacred Heart schools globally. The open heart with the cross reflects our commitment that all are welcome at Sacred Heart and emphasizes the dedication to our Catholic identity and our Goals and Criteria

Letter from our President & BOARD CHAIR

Dear Sacred Heart community,

At Sacred Heart, our education unites with a higher purpose. Our Goals and Criteria are our touchstones, our bedrock of values, and our promise to you, ensuring our students grow in faith, intellect, and purpose, so they will share their conviction, energy, and compassion with the world. This year, our Goals and Criteria were at the heart of a Sacred Heart education, guiding us towards deep faith, excellence in study, and compassion to our sisters and brothers.

Love of learning came to life daily across the school through imagination, collaboration, and curiosity:

› Our community lived with “courage and confidence.” Students, faculty and staff, parents, and alumnae actively participated as presenters and learners.

› Girls solved design challenges and advocated for change as they leveraged technology, valued wellness, cared for the environment, and strengthened friendships.

› Barat Center and Kindergarten children enjoyed a new violin program.

› Lower School girls confidently shared newfound perspectives through capstone presentations on prehistory, dinosaurs, ancient cultures, and early America.

› Middle School students expressed complex thoughts through artwork, treated us to an inspiring performance of Sister Act, and launched a new softball club.

› Upper School girls explored new sportscasting, increased podcasting, challenging theater productions, and a new ice hockey club.

› Faculty pursued professional learning opportunities to expand their innovative teaching.

› Alumnae celebrated lifelong friendships and shared valuable expertise with students.

This report reflects the generous love and commitment of the whole Sacred Heart community. Thank you to everyone who partnered with Sacred Heart Greenwich by serving as a school leader, volunteer, mentor, ambassador, donor, and engaged community member! By raising over $2.239 million for the Fund for Sacred Heart and over $3.665 million in total for our beloved school, you advanced our mission and enabled transformative student and community experiences.

As we look ahead, Cor Unum — one heart, one mission, one school community — will guide our journey towards excellence in all things, but especially in the areas of academics, athletics, and the arts. The 2022–2023 Fund for Sacred Heart, with an ambitious $2.2 million goal, will continue to play a crucial role in supporting the distinctive Sacred Heart Greenwich student experience in every way.

As part of the Sacred Heart Commission on Goals process this year, we will have the opportunity as a community to reflect meaningfully on where our strengths lie in relation to the Goals and Criteria and rededicate ourselves to living the vision expressed in them.

We feel blessed by your active engagement in support of our students as we boldly move forward.

With gratitude,

Our Mission

Sacred Heart Greenwich, founded in 1848, is an independent Catholic, college preparatory school for young women from Kindergarten through Grade 12, with a coed early childhood education program.

Sacred Heart, steeped in a solid academic tradition, educates women to have independence of judgment, personal freedom, and strength of character so

that they can become leaders with broad intellectual and spiritual horizons.

The school welcomes students of all races, socioeconomic backgrounds, and religious beliefs. True to its international heritage, the school provides students with experiences of diversity.

Cultivating prophetic leaders is a compelling commitment of our education, and the

entire school community, and as a member of the Sacred Heart Network of Schools, it is dedicated to the Goals and Criteria:

› A personal and active faith in God

› A deep respect for intellectual values

› A social awareness which impels to action

› The building of community as a Christian value

› Personal growth in an atmosphere of wise freedom

2022 SENIOR Class Gift

Celebrating their daughters’ journeys, Grade 12 parents proudly followed the strong tradition of serving as philanthropic leaders to our community!

Over the decades, senior class families have been instrumental in significantly strengthening our endowment, and we are thankful to the Class of 2022 families for upholding this long tradition.

We are so grateful to these senior class families who powerfully united to achieve a $1+ million Senior Class Gift to the Fund for Sacred Heart, the Pamela Juan Hayes ’64 Endowment to launch the FUTURES program, the Lower School Art Room renovation in memory of Vivienne Finn ’27, and scholarships. Everyone on campus will also appreciate and enjoy the tribute gift from the Class of 2022 and their families, a community gathering space outside the Athletic Center furnished with Adirondack chairs, a bench, and a table.

“We are thrilled to support Sacred Heart because we have seen the incredible impact it has had on our “Lifer” daughter, Sarah, and her classmates. She has flourished during her 13 years at Sacred Heart as the school has grown, and we could not be more proud to play a part in the transformative opportunities offered to her and the next generation of Sacred Heart students. Sacred Heart will always be close to our hearts and an important part of our family.”

2021–2022 FUND FOR SACRED HEART 172021–2022 Report on Giving

“I have attended Sacred Heart for nine years and I truly enjoyed and benefited from having a small, tight-knit community that helped to create a sense of belonging each and every day. Through the community, I found my voice, my interests, and my forever friends.

There is something truly comforting about coming into school and not having to change yourself based on who is around. At Sacred Heart, you can come as you are and focus on building bonds, learning, and just having as much fun as you can during the roller coaster that is high school.”

This has allowed for great perspective and discernment around what works and what doesn’t in a school environment, and gratitude when a school is getting it right with your child. We have been touched by the warmth and attention shown to our daughter’s needs, and have been delighted with her growth in her first year at Sacred Heart. “I love working with the girls at Sacred Heart because I cherish how they develop their individual strengths over the years in middle school and how Sacred Heart supports each and every girl in becoming herself. And that’s why I give to the Fund for Sacred Heart, too — it supports a wide variety of programs which offer the girls more choices of fascinating things to discover and learn about.”

“I see joyful learning in my classrooms every day. In math and physics, we problem-solve as a table. Because of this, I am able to deep-dive into the subject and fully understand the topic. By the end of each unit, I feel more confident in my understanding of the subject.”

Celebrating 20 consecutive years of giving

“In September 1951, I came to Sacred Heart Greenwich as an eighth grade five-day boarder. My five years were a profound formative experience that affected my entire life. For five years my wake-up call at 6:30 a.m. was a voice at our door greeting us with the words “Sacred Heart of Jesus and Immaculate Heart of Mary.” The sleepy response from each of the roommates was “I give you my heart.” A daily call to faith. I continue to donate to Sacred Heart because although boarders are no longer accepted, I believe the girls who come in every day are still called to deeper faith in the Sacred Heart of Jesus and the Immaculate Heart of Mary. What could be more important?”

—MARGARET BROWN GREGORY ’56

“Sacred Heart encouraged me to reach high, be confident in my abilities and talents, and make opportunities rather than wait for them. As a result I achieved my goal of becoming a surgeon and a research scientist. As a scholarship recipient, I feel a strong need to give back to Sacred Heart so that other girls like me can have the same opportunities to develop themselves intellectually and emotionally, knowing they have a support system that values who they are and who they can be.”

GIFTS TO the Endowment

We are deeply grateful and humbled by the donors who supported our endowment this year, demonstrating their belief in our mission and vision for the future and leaving their legacy at Sacred Heart Greenwich. The endowment value, as of June 30, 2022, was $43.4 million. Our community’s generosity has supported +22% growth in endowment over the past five years. Gifts made to endowed funds during the 2021–2022 fiscal year are recognized below each named fund.

The Sacred Heart Greenwich Investment Committee, partnering with our outside, independent investment manager, oversees our endowment, with decisions consistent with the investment and spend policies approved by the Board. Members of the Investment Committee, drawn from our broad community, meet regularly to share their deep investment expertise and to review and ensure compliance of our investment policy and strategy, endowment performance, and asset allocation.

The annual draw from our endowment enables the school to accomplish vital growth in programs and financial aid, as well as capital improvements. In 2021–2022, for example, our endowment supported a continued meaningful commitment to financial aid,

with over $4.4 million in tuition assistance supporting 22% of our student body. A Sacred Heart education guided by an expert faculty is a life-changing gift.

We invite you to learn more, at shgreenwich.org/giving/endowment, about our endowed funds established to benefit Sacred Heart Greenwich in perpetuity. We encourage you to make a gift to any one of our existing endowed funds, should there be one that reflects your philanthropic interests. You can also launch a new named, endowed fund with a minimum commitment of $25,000. Please contact Director of Advancement Lauren Fredette to discuss leaving your legacy with Sacred Heart.

NEW: FUTURES –Financial literacy and entrepreneurship

The Pamela Juan Hayes ’64 Endowment Fund, in memory of Mrs. Hayes’ extraordinary leadership, supports the launch of FUTURES in 2022–2023. FUTURES is a mindset, rooted in the Goals and Criteria, that equips Sacred Heart Greenwich girls K–12 through interdisciplinary programming to build a foundation in financial literacy and entrepreneurship. Through robust academic study, hands-on projects, financial simulations, and career exploration, girls develop the agility, aspiration, and empathy to reimagine solutions, navigate the world of business, and, more broadly, flourish in an evolving world.

“The Goals and Criteria make a Sacred Heart education unique. Goal I — to educate to a personal and active faith in God — has special meaning for us, and that’s why we contribute to an endowment for enriching religious education at Greenwich.”

“Sacred Heart gave our girls such an amazing experience, academically and socially, forming them into the women they are today. For this, we are eternally grateful. As we were blessed that our girls received a Sacred Heart education, in supporting the endowment each year we hope, in some small way, that we are helping future generations of girls benefit from the life-changing gift that is a Sacred Heart Greenwich education.”

Lower School Art Room Renovation

The new, enlarged art room speaks to the central role that the arts play in the Lower School curriculum. Expanded to allow for more interdisciplinary, collaborative, and multipurpose work, the art room can serve students in all divisions. Boasting massive corner windows and views of the Long Island Sound, the final design unites light, water, and beauty! With a central community sink, vertical space for the display of art that instructs and delights, and plenty of shelving for supplies, the art room will inspire students to be immersed in thoughtful observation and joyful creation. Thank you to Mairead and David Finn for the vision and leadership and to the many families who supported the renovation, a beautiful tribute in loving memory to Vivienne Finn ’27.

TRIBUTES 50 Sacred Heart Greenwich

Aloysia Hardey, RSCJ

PLANNED GIVING SOCIETY

Leave a legacy

By including Sacred Heart Greenwich in your estate plans, you can ensure that the school you know and love remains vibrant for future generations.

There are a number of ways to leave your legacy:

› Bequests

› Charitable remainder or lead trusts

› Rolling over an IRA (for those 70½ and older)

› Beneficiaries of retirement funds

› Beneficiaries of donor advised funds

“My education helped to form who I am today and prepared me well for college, law school, and a life of public service. My faith, my education, and my sense of self were all strengthened during the formative years of my high school. I still cherish friendships from those days and look forward to reconnecting with classmates at reunions. Giving back was always a part of my life plan. To remember Sacred Heart in my will seems like a natural thing to do.”

—Testimonial from an Aloysia Hardey, RSCJ Planned Giving Society Member

Giving to SACRED HEART

Each and every gift is celebrated. We welcome everyone’s participation annually in the Fund for Sacred Heart and also invite you to consider the many other opportunities to make a transformative impact on the student experience.

The Fund for Sacred Heart

The Fund for Sacred Heart is the philanthropic priority for Sacred Heart Greenwich. With contributions applied to the current school year, your support of the Fund transforms opportunities, enhancing academic innovation plus arts and athletic programs, faculty excellence, financial aid, and community strength. Your support for the Fund for Sacred Heart ensures a dynamic, forward-thinking environment in which each girl can take on challenges, grow in understanding and empathy, and use her gifts to serve others.

Endowment

Generations of parents, alumnae, grandparents, and friends have generously supported our endowment. By supporting our endowment, you leave a legacy at Sacred Heart Greenwich, vitally ensuring

our long-term financial strength, and increasing our community’s pride by enabling us to erect buildings, expand curricular and extracurricular offerings, and continue to attract and retain exceptional faculty and students.

Planned Giving

Planned giving allows you to leave a meaningful legacy at Sacred Heart Greenwich and ensure that the school you know and love remains vibrant for future generations. You can leave your legacy through your will, charitable remainder or lead trust, life insurance, retirement assets, or donor advised fund.

If your philanthropic plans include a gift to Sacred Heart Greenwich, please contact the Advancement Office. We would be honored to understand your wishes and recognize

you as a member of the Aloysia Hardey, RSCJ Planned Giving Society.
