My biggest business lesson to date is sell to build a brand, don’t build a brand to sell.

In 2013, my strategy for business was pretty straightforward: build an audience and sell products to that audience With this goal in mind, I focused my efforts on creating a ton of content and ultimately have a recognizable personal brand At the time, YouTube was taking off This was the height of Michelle Phan, Chiara Ferragni and so forth. So I pretty much just modeled their content. I focused on YouTube creating videos covering

makeup tricks, tutorials, and product recommendations

To give you some context my best video was makeup tricks with a spoon And that was probably my most successful I committed to posting content daily, investing the majority of my time and resources into content creation, editing, and engaging in my channel Monetization took a backseat as I prioritized audience growth, while building an email list through promoting a

free makeup guide as the call to action at the end of all my videos. This approach is commonly known as creating "lead magnets”. I even enlisted the help of some SEO experts to help with my visibility. So I would rank high on search pages and reach my intended audience. And this was all fine and dandy, I was definitely reaching people. But my audience growth was painfully slow. And that’s not really a business, that’s a hobby and I wanted to have a business. So what I learned was relying solely on content creation to build an audience for product sales was not a sustainable path to success.

After a year of this strategy, I decided it was time to change my approach Instead of fixating on audience expansion, I shifted my focus to product creation and sales That’s when everything changed Truly I went from making no money to making consistent 10k months by selling courses and digital products Then when I started to have some kind of income, I took a portion of that and reinvested into advertising dollars This was my biggest growth lesson to date. My brand exploded. My products were selling. And I was, as they say, “in business.”

To make a long story short – the lesson I learned was selling to build a brand is far more effective than building a brand to sell. So if you ’ re feeling like you don’t have an audience and you need one to be successful I’m living proof that this is a common misconception and you ’ re much better off building your brand by selling your products And the income you make from your products you can reinvest by advertising and this will be like throwing gas on your fire
