BACHELOR OF SCIENCE (HONOURS) IN ARCHITECTURE THEORIES OF ARCHITECTURE AND URBANISM (ARC61303/ARC2224)

SYNOPSIS: REACTION PAPER (AUGUST 2016) [10 MARKS] NAME: Shery Edrina bt Salehuddin ID: 0316321 LECTURER: Mr.Nazmi TUTORIAL TIME: SYNOPSIS NO: 3 READER TITLE: The Geometry Of Feeling AUTHOR: Juhani Pallasmaa

‘The Geometry of Feeling’ by Juhani Pallasmaa discusses about what is the relationship between architecture and form, sense that users experience while entering the spaces and phenomenology of architecture. In the article, the author stresses about how nowadays architects emphasizes more on the form of the building compared to the spaces. Furthermore, buildings built nowadays more as if ‘function follow form’ compared to ‘form follow fuction’ which emphasizes on the spaces first before coming out with the form. The author also states that architecture can also work in a form of art, which the work of art is not based on the actual physical thing, it exists only in the consciousness of the person experiencing it which means it takes more than just a form for people to understand the art but it takes emotions and imagination for people to actually experience the art. It relates closely to what the author is trying to point out which is architects should emphasize on the spaces forming inside the building and try to bring and put poetic feelings into the spaces. The author also states that as architects we cannot design buildings just as physical objects where as we have to consider the images and feelings of the people who are going to use the spaces. He suggested that architecture can somehow triggered or brings back memories for the users, meaning that the spaces designed may caught their attention and make the users have a personal and strong connection with it. In my opinion I do agree with what the author is trying to point out which is how important spaces are compared to forms even though first glance or first impression always manages to caught everyones attention. However, what lies beneath and within is more important and interesting which are the spaces which will leave and stronger impact to the users when they use the space. Furthermore, what is the point of having a nice built form of building if the spaces are meaningless? Thus, spaces and forms are equally important and it compliments each other to make great architecture.
