SYNOPSIS: REACTION PAPER (AUGUST 2016) [10 MARKS] NAME: Shery Edrina bt Salehuddin ID: 0316321 LECTURER: Mr.Nazmi TUTORIAL TIME: SYNOPSIS NO: 2 READER TITLE: Semiology and Architecture AUTHOR: Charles Jencks

Semiology and Architecture by Charles Jencks discusses about how every objects, sign, languages and form has meanings to it. A product is being produce because it needs to be serves as a purpose. Being a pro Post- Modernism, through his text Jencks critizes how the Modern architecture has lost its meaning in designing and instead focuses only on the materials used and its simplicity without trying to imply any ornaments or forms on the buildings which is widely used during Post Modernism era. Jencks stated that ‘any form in the environment or sign in language is motivated or capable of being motivated’. He also states that ‘although form may be initially arbitrary or non-motivated, its subsequent use is motivated or based on some determinants’. Jencks trying to point out that eventhough how simple the design is referring to the Modern architecture style, it building or form has to has its meaning to it and not only being label as ‘dull’ or ‘simplicity’. Furthermore, Jencks further discussed on how important ‘meaning’ is. Every individual has their own description of what ‘meaning’ is. It has variety of meanings that one might not think of the same thing. Moreover, Jencks also states that the main point of semiological triangle is that there are relations between language, thought and reality in order to understand what the real meaning is. In my opinion, what Jencks is trying to point out is how important for architects or designers to understand what are they designing and who are they designing for. For Jencks, it is important to put much passion into what we are designing thus, why, if it is possible, it is a must for architects to pin point every form or ornaments that they did and put a meaning to it and not only labelling it as it is without any further description that holds a strong meaning. I would not totally agree with Jencks’ points but I am also not disagreeing. This is because, it is true that it is important to has a specific meaning when designing but Modern architecture is not totally a meaningless or lifeless design where as it introduces more peaceful and calm vibes that manages to attract people’s attention only through its minimal design and spaces.
