Our History

Sherborne School is an independent boys’ boarding school re-founded in 1550 under a royal charter granted by King Edward VI. It has grown into a modern school of nearly 600 pupils and about 100 teaching staff. Surrounded by the bustling market town, the school attracts pupils from across the world. Shirburnians follow a diverse range of careers at the highest levels and include diplomats, bishops, politicians, journalists, actors, poets, and musicians.

Sherborne Preparatory School is an independent co-educational school for children aged 3-13 years. The school has a long and distinguished history and an enviable academic reputation as a feeder to many of England’s leading independent schools.

Sherborne Qatar was founded in 2009 and is a joint venture between Sherborne School and Sheikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Thani. Members of the Qatari royal family such as the Emir, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, have attended Sherborne and Sheikh Abdullah and his wife Sheikha Amal have sent some of their sons there too.

Sheikh Abdulla was keen that Sherborne should join him in a partnership to bring to Qatar education opportunities and values that he had seen and liked at Sherborne. He says: “Ahmed our oldest son was transformed by Sherborne. The school’s approach helped him to discover different talents in himself and he was greatly nourished by the experience.

We are extremely grateful for what a Sherborne education has given him. Sherborne has history, culture, discipline and a willingness to transform a child. That is what it did for our child and that is what we want to give to Qatar. We need to bring a more structured educational experience to our country. Qatar needs Sherborne’s culture, experience and tradition.”

Sherborne Qatar is a founding member of the Ministry of Education and Higher Education Outstanding Schools Initiative and is overseen by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education Private Schools Office. Sherborne Qatar is a self-financed, not-for-profit school with its own Board of Governors, of which Sherborne School has half of the appointed membership. Its ethos, brand and educational standards are overseen by and aligned to Sherborne School.

THE PRINCIPAL FROM

Welcome to the Prep Qatar Shirburnian for the academic year 2018 – 2019. Thank you to everybody who has contributed to this magazine; it is an excellent production and a wonderful record of the year. I hope you enjoy reading the articles and remembering all the things that you and your friends have achieved over the last 12 months.

The magazine includes fascinating and thought-provoking articles written by both pupils and staff and, as you look through the magazine, I am sure you will all agree that Sherborne Qatar Prep School has had a wonderful year. There are many highlights of the year covered in the publication, including sport, music and drama and academic successes.

Talented and dedicated teachers combine with talented and dedicated pupils and the emotional bond between them leads to outstanding learning

It has been so impressive to observe how hard the Prep School children are working but also how much they clearly enjoy what they are doing. Also, this year the Prep School’s new multipurpose hall has opened and it has quickly become a key Prep School venue in which many different events take place.

During this year’s Senior School Commem I announced a new prize, the Principal’s Award for Outstanding Achievement and the first recipients of the award were Turkia Al Thani and Shahd Al Hajiri. Turkia and Shahd were both selected to represent Qatar in The Asian World School Debating Championships, a truly outstanding achievement and recognition for their hard work and commitment to debating. However, there is no reason why Principal’s Award should always go to Senior School pupils and perhaps next summer it will go to a Prep School pupil.

I would like to highlight something that I am very proud of and that is the way the whole Sherborne community has come together to support Som Roung School in Cambodia. An example of this was the Prep School sponsored walk which enabled the pupils to raise money for Som Roung and try and imagine what it would be like to walk to and from school every day as the Som Roung pupils do.

This is a charity we are committed to supporting for a number of years and as a start to establishing even stronger links with the Som Roung a group of 8 teachers and a representative from the PTA, visited Cambodia to deliver desperately needed resources, to meet the children and understand their difficulties and to provide support to the school’s teaching staff.

Our first pupil visit is being planned and will truly establish this charity in the hearts of our pupils and make sure we, as a school community, are living by our school values and giving our pupils a great opportunity to take an active role in an operational charity and learning both the importance, as well as the true meaning, of service.

At Prep School Commem I mentioned during my speech that outstanding schools need talented and dedicated people to work successfully. Talented and dedicated teachers combine with talented and dedicated pupils and the emotional bond between them leads to outstanding learning. Pupils need to feel safe and secure, not just physically, but emotionally. They must be allowed to express themselves and make mistakes without negative consequences. Pupils need to respect their teachers and be respected in return.

At Sherborne we encourage interaction between staff and pupils, whether in lessons, sporting activities, inter-house competitions or after school enrichment and this allows an emotional bond to develop and grow. At Sherborne we care about our pupils, we care about their development inside and outside the classroom and I think this bond is clearly demonstrated in the pages of this excellent publication.

I hope you enjoy the magazine.

From The Headmaster

2018-2019 was a fantastic year for all of us at the Prep School: full of challenge, progress, success and a lot of fun.

All these positive outcomes can only take place because of a large number of people working together. So, thank you:

to our parents for all their support;

to our governors, who set high expectations for our school and lead our strategic direction;

to the Executive team for their support and council;

to my leadership team for their energy, drive, support focus and honesty as we move our school forward to our mission and priorities;

to the Bursary, Admin and Support staff for their tireless work behind the scenes;

to the PTA and their Chair, Jackie Wollaston, for their wonderful support of the community and all the events they have organised;

to our Prefects who embody what it means to be a pupil here;

to our TAs who provide so much support for pupils and staff;

to our committed team of teachers who, through their hard work and dedication, have guided our children towards achieving their potential.

Thank you for your tireless work: teaching, coaching, supporting, caring and inspiring.

You have left your footprint on the story of our amazing school

Some of the staff have now moved on to new adventures and we wish David Payne, Keri Hughes, Sinead Healey, Cara Palfrey, Alice O’Neil, Lewis Whittle, Sobia Beach and Rhagda Adnan the very best for the future.

We also acknowledge Ali Palfrey, Miss Anisa, Cara Palfrey, Debbie Eite, Kathryn Mills, Miss Loise, Miss Suzan Al Zaza and Miss Tina who join the group of staff have been with the school for five years and who have all played and continue to play a massive part in our community.

Children live in the process of creation, not in the outcome of their creation and there are great examples of this, wherever you look, across our school. If we want to remember ourselves and understand what life is really about, we just need to observe our children for a few minutes.

Within the pages of this magazine you will find reminders of some of the many wonderful things which happened and were achieved during 2018 – 2019 and which represent much hard work.

However, our children live in the moment and embrace challenge every day on all sorts of different levels. This is a huge credit to our teaching team, expertly laying the foundations and creating an environment in which the children feel safe and confident enough to have a go and try everything.

It won’t be long before we appreciate the joy, simplicity and presence that they exude, skipping along, running or singing whenever they feel like it. For them everything is fresh and new: there are no preconceived ideas of how things ought to look or be. Therefore, a tree can be a castle or a spaceship and a cardboard box can be pretty much anything! The enchantment to life is to really pause and appreciate what we have and the opportunities which are presented to us. By embracing them and the challenges which go with them, we make the most of our opportunities.

So, we encourage our pupils to embrace challenge, not worry about being perfect, just be the best version of you. Failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of it and once you accept that, you can do anything.

LEAVER 2018-2019

I started my journey at Sherborne Qatar Preparatory School as the Head of Year 2 teacher and as a Year 2 Form Teacher. For many reasons this year was such a special one for me. This was my first time working internationally, having only met Mr. Prowse three months before, I was diving in at the deep end and did not know what to expect. I was welcomed by the family immediately.

The staff at Sherborne Qatar share such a special bond; it truly does feel like a family. A special mention has to go to Nerissa Saguisa who drew the short straw and became my teaching assistant during this first year. She had her work cut out looking after me as well as the class but she did such a wonderful and caring job that I am forever in her debt and will really miss her.

I had the pleasure of working closely with the most fantastic 6 year olds and we had such fun in Year 2 making memories that will certainly last a lifetime for me. These 6 year olds will be completing Year 6 next year and whilst I am sad not to keep a close eye on their development,

I have such confidence that they are more than ready for the challenge.

After my first year, Mr. Fawcett appointed me his first Deputy Headmaster. I thank him for this honour and for his belief in me throughout the last three years. He, like Nerissa, has looked after me diligently, and I consider him a dear friend and will miss being at his side through it all next year.

I have so many hugely positive highlights of my time here, from House fashion walks, Zumba on the astro-turf, learning Arabic with Miss Suzan and pushing Humpty Dumpty off the wall. Sherborne Qatar Preparatory School is a special place. It is made special by the wonderful and creative children that fill the classrooms and the caring and highly skilled teachers that help to facilitate the learning of our next generation. I have thoroughly enjoyed the privilege of working at Sherborne Qatar and thank all the staff for their support – I have needed it. I wish everyone the very best.

Mr. Payne – Outgoing Deputy Head

AAfi Ahmed

few days after our return from the 2019 summer holiday we received the tragic news that our friend, colleague and teacher, Mrs. Afi Ahmed had died at the age of 50, after a short illness.

Before training to teach, Afi worked in The City in London and she had only been teaching for a couple of years when she joined the staff of Sherborne Qatar Prep School. Afi taught at Sherborne Qatar for eight years and she was a much loved member of the Sherborne Qatar Community.

She taught in Years 4, 6 and latterly Year 5 and her wisdom, teaching and pastoral care are fondly remembered by the many pupils and families who passed through her hands. She also contributed significantly to the wider life of the school.

She was a proud member of Amna House and at each Sports Day (her favourite event) she would remind everyone that Amna won Sports Day for six consecutive years, a record which it will be hard to match in the future.

Her love of fashion also found its way into many events, not least when she masterminded a complete wardrobe of clothes during a memorable House Trashion Day.

Afi loved life and her infectious enthusiasm transmitted itself to those around her. Known for her ever present smile you could not be in her company for long before you were also smiling and laughing. She was also immensely proud of her three sons and their various achievements.

It is a measure of the affection felt for her by all members of the Sherborne Qatar Community that three large Condolence Books of tributes from pupils, staff and parents have been compiled for presentation to her family.

Afi will not be forgotten by Sherborne Qatar and very soon everyone will be able to take a few moments in the day to enjoy Afi’s Garden.

Art & Crafts EVERY CHILD

is an ARTIST

In our Pre-School and Reception (EYFS) play underpins learning and all aspects of our children’s development. Through play our children have developed language skills, their emotions and creativity, social and intellectual skills.

During our class time all the children’s play is natural and spontaneous although when needed some children may need extra help from adults.

LETTER

From The Head of EYFS

Play in our Pre-School and Reception takes place indoors and outdoors and it is in these different environments that our children at Sherborne Qatar explore and discover their immediate world.

It is here they practise new ideas and skills; they take risks, show imagination and solve problems on their own or with others.

Young children have a natural desire to learn, explore and question. At Sherborne Qatar we offer an environment that enables child-initiated play in order to capture the moment of engagement.

Everything children see, hear, feel or do in our EYFS at Sherborne Qatar is called the curriculum.

The curriculum for Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) sets out the experiences that children should have from birth to the end of their first year in school.

The role that our teachers and teaching assistants have is crucial.

They have provided time and space and appropriate resources.

We make sure we have opportunities to seize the moment when a child shows interest in an activity which can be built upon and these are called, ‘teachable moments’.

Pre-School Meadows

Sinead Healy & Debbie Eite

We loved our nursery rhyme topic -dressing up as our favourite characters, finding out who knocked poor Humpty off the wall and inviting the mummies and daddies in for a nursery rhyme craft morning.

We finished with a teddy bear picnic in Al Rayyan Family Park.

Our trip to the beach was really special, travelling on the bus with our friends, splashing in the sea and making sandcastles and finished off beautifully with an ice cream.

There were gasps of excitement when Build a Bear visited us, singing special songs and putting the heart in our bears.

This year the children could not wait to start reading; they have absolutely loved learning the sounds. We always find a lovely activity to link to the sound and this helps the children make a stronger connection in their learning.

One of our favourites was the tantalizing tang of tea and toast wafting through the classroom and outside as the children arrived one morning.

For sure, all of our little learners now remember the ‘’t sound!

We loved our Winter topic - dressing up in warm clothes and pretending to be cold. Treetops enjoyed experimenting with ice and experienced the sensation of ice melting in their hands. We learned about the Arctic, winter animals and what they do to keep warm. They especially loved the penguins. The penguin dance was a class favourite and

a routine we performed many times. The beach topic was also a huge success finishing off with their beach trip where the children splashed around with their friends and teachers and built sandcastles.

Excitement filled the room as the STEM Scientists visited and showed the class how thrilling a chemical reaction can be.

The children were mesmerised by coloured ink moving up a straw, through tissue paper demonstrating how plants absorb water.

Our Eid party was so much fun! Treetops had an amazing learning experience as they explored how communities come together in celebration. The Eid party was a huge success with lots of food, fun and laughter. The children loved getting henna on their hands and having their faces painted. The children loved exploring Ten Town this year.

What a fun-filled way to learn numbers. We found out about the Ten Town characters and their stories and learned the songs with each number.

This helped the children develop their understanding of number. Treetops love a party so we celebrated in style when Freddie Four had his fourth birthday party. The children could relate to this as many of them had turned four or were soon to celebrate their fourth birthday.

When we finally reached Tina Ten the children were so excited to meet the character and complete their Ten Town journey.

Reception RB

Ubah Barasab

They say that Reception B is the loudest, they say we make too much noise but it is hard to stay quiet when there are movers, shakers, scientists, pilots, thinkers, dreamers, artists, farmers, and story tellers, who are constantly exploring, discovering, storming and forming so many great ideas.

This year Reception B have had so many memorable moments that it is hard to choose just one; the children have absolutely loved all our enquiries this year.

First, they zoomed into their learning as Superheroes choosing their special powers and creating capes.

Next, we sailed the seas around the world learning about the similarities and differences between countries, celebrating all the

different places we are all from.

Then we travelled the world and learned about different animals and their habitats. We read the story of Handa’s Surprise and had a truly African experience.

After that we had a ‘knightly’ time learning about castles, prince and princesses. We designed and made our own amour. Finally, we took off on our rockets into space, learning

about our universe. The children reached for the stars and landed safely on the moon.

At the end of the year Reception B stand more confident, speak with more clarity and have a wealth of memorable moments that they take with them.

Reception RM

Reception M has shared so many adventures this year. Our very first adventures are the ones I will always remember. The children thoroughly immersed themselves in our first enquiry, ‘Why am I Super?. They loved exploring all about themselves and their amazing bodies. We found out just how special and unique we all are.

We also discovered that our parents, carers and families are pretty awesome too. As part of our enquiry we read stories about Super Daisy, Supertato and Super Worm.

We found out what it takes to be a true superhero, exploring interactions through dramatic and small-world play. The children made real-life superhero masks and capes to wear on our mission to find that Evil Pea!

A real highlight in Reception M this year was our Class Assembly all about People Who Help Us. It was just before the end of the Autumn Term. It was at that point that the children really started to demonstrate their potential.

I was so impressed by their ability to learn their words and to remember the order of events.

The children loved dressing up so that the mums and dads could try to guess who they were.

Reception M children have continued to develop and progress throughout their Reception Year, I am so proud of everything they have achieved.

Reception RT

What a wonderful year we have had in ReceptionT! We have immersed ourselves in many wonderful enquiries. We have been critical thinkers, risktakers, adventurers, explorers and autonomous learners. There have been many memorable moments throughout our year but a huge highlight was during our,

‘Where do animals live?’ enquiry, when we went to Al Sulaiteen Farm and we had a fantastic experience.

At the farm we were greeted by the scientists who gave us a tour. Firstly, we went to the green houses where we saw a range of different fruits and vegetables growing; we saw peppers, cucumbers and tomatoes. Then, we were a little hungry so we had our snack in the picnic area.

After that, we put on gloves and went on an insect hunt. Then we went to see ostriches, oryx, deer, hens, turkeys, chickens and some baby chicks.

We also got to see the eggs in the incubator preparing to hatch into baby chicks. We were lucky to have the opportunity to see and touch a real Ostrich egg, which is so much bigger than the egg of a chick. Next we set off to feed the camels, which we enjoyed very much.

Finally, we went to visit another green house; this time we got to see the pretty flowers growing.

We were so lucky to receive some flowers to take back to school for our outdoor gardens. Everyone had a really fun day at the farm and we learned so much about the animals, fruits and plants.

The children have worked incredibly hard this year and should be so proud of their achievements. I know that they will continue their amazing journeys into Year One!

Miss. Trainor

Lindsey Wilkin Reception RW

What fantastic year we have had in Reception W.

I have been amazed at how much the children have grown up and progressed this year. Although it will be sad to say goodbye, I know that they are ready for the new challenge that Year One has to offer.

We have had a lot of fun getting stuck into our enquiries; it’s hard to

choose a favourite!

In our first topic ‘Guess who?’, we learned about different jobs in our community and how people can help us.

We learned instructions on how to brush our teeth and even got to practice the skills in school. I think our class’s favourite job had to be the firefighters! After being able to ride a fire engine at Kidzmondo the children continued to fight fires in our classroom chanting “Kidzmondo firefighters!”

In the Spring Term we travelled around the world, with our most popular stop in ‘Reception W Airways’ being London! We then visited Africa where we immersed ourselves in the story of ‘Handa’s surprise’.

We tasted tropical fruits, listened to African music and became experts at retelling the story. We finished off our next enquiry with a trip to the farm.

The children loved feeding the ostriches and camels. We even tried to find some insects to investigate. Lara was so excited

when we caught a spider in her bug jar. We finished our year learning about, ‘Who lives in a castle?’, where the children found a dragon’s egg and received a letter from a Sherborne Knight.

Watching how the children bring their new maths and literacy skills into their play is a joy to see. They have worked so hard this year and should be so proud of their achievements. I know that they will continue their amazing journeys into Year One!

KEY STAGE 1

YEAR 1 & 2

The children in Key Stage 1 (Years 1 and 2) have experienced some amazing learning opportunities this year and each term has been jam packed with incredible memories to look back on.

In the Autumn Term Year 1 started learning all about the Great Fire of London. From singing songs to baking bread, the children were fully immersed in the events surrounding the Great Fire and they became very passionate in sharing what they had learned with everyone around them! Year 2 spent much of the term working towards their British Tea Party. Their learning involved making a teacup and saucer out of

clay, singing some traditional British songs and even meeting Queen Elizabeth II for a special question and answer session.

The tea party at the end of the term was a fantastic way to share all their hard work with their families - and enjoy a few tasty treats at their Great British Bake Off.

To get started in the Spring Term Year 1 had lots of preparationto do for the Bee Musical, with lines to learn, songs to practise and costumes to create. All that hard work paid off when the children performed impeccably to the whole school and their proud families. Their confidence shone on stage and it was wonderful to see the teamwork and perseverance that went into their performances.

Meanwhile, Year 2 were truly inspired when they began learning about significant people from the past – Florence Nightingale, Ernest Shackleton and Walt Disney.

Classrooms were transformed into hospitals in the Crimean War (complete with rat poo and vomit). Luckily some children took on the role of nurses and were prepared to clean everything up ready to treat the soldiers coming back from battle. They then took a trip to the Antarctic so that the children could experience what explorers like Shackleton endured – icy winds, small, cramped tents to live in and cold food! Finally, after learning all about the creative genius of Walt Disney, the children visited a cinema to celebrate a wonderful term of learning and experience one of Disney’s creations – The Lion King.

During the Summer Term both Year 1 and Year 2 learned about technology and spent time learning new skills and putting them into practice. Year 1 used their knowledge of position and direction from their maths lessons to help them program the Bee Bots to move around on a map they had created. Year 2 looked into how technology has changed our world. The children used encyclopaedias instead of Google and even pickled some fruit and vegetables to experience life before the luxury of a refrigerator! They then used their skills to edit photos and ended with a debate about the impact technology has on our day-to-day life.

What an amazing year it has been in Key Stage 1! So many inspiring lessons and so much fantastic learning has taken place.

Mrs. Hughes

KEY STAGE 1 YEAR 1

1BP, 2018-2019

1D, 2018-2019

KEY STAGE 1

YEAR 3 & 4

Lower Key Stage 2 (Years 3 and 4) enjoyed a full year of exciting and rewarding academic experiences. One of the enquiry highlights that stands out for the children in Year 3 was Ancient Egypt, particularly learning about mummification and creating canopic jars. Children were able to demonstrate some of the fantastic work they had produced throughout the enquiry by showing parents during the landing day. Everyone was ‘WOW’ed by the quality of the costumes that the children dressed up in.

In Year 4, a definite highlight was the Viking enquiry which started with a wonderful experience for the children as they completed four different activities including writing using hieroglyphics and meeting an ‘actual’ Viking! The Roman enquiry was also enjoyed by all and Corey Richards Carberry commented,

‘I really enjoyed learning about all the different arts such as mosaics from the Roman times and the empires that they made with different countries.’

Everyone was delighted at the success of the Year 3 production of The Lion King and huge credit and congratulations has to be passed to the children for their relentless effort in the build up to the show as well as to the teachers for their perseverance!

Aselection of children thoroughly enjoyed their visit to RGS where they tried out several science experiments including one which seemed to make glass disappear. Another visit – the Horrible Histories show at DESS –left many children giggling long after the show and they now look back at the experience with fond memories.

Towards the end of the year, Year 4 experimented with different states of matter and created a substance called oobleck which has properties of both a liquid and a solid.

Mr. Bray

This has been a jam packed year full of amazing experiences, challenges and enquiry based learning. We started the year with our WOW! to introduce our Autumn Term enquiry- Australia. We ‘flew’ the pupils on a classroom based aeroplane all the way to ‘Australia’. During the journey, they were introduced to a variety of information about the country and even served in flight refreshments by Captain Flanagan and Air stewards Mrs. Ahmed, Mrs. Bennett and Mrs. McMahon. This paved the way for a term of discovery all about Australia which included learning about some of the different areas, animals and history.

The Autumn Term culminated in our wonderful play Captain Cook Boldly Goes Down Under which wowed the audience with details of Captain Cook’s historic journey to Australia. We also had the landing day where children presented their group research on each of the different areas of Australia that they had been learning about.

The Spring Term began with our WOW! introducing the pupils to our Survival enquiry theme. This was based on a range of famous explorers who had made important discoveries during their lives.

This term the children used their class reading book Kensuke’s Kingdom to write a range of survival based texts in their English lessons. In the middle of the term, we had our Survival Day.

This has to be one of the most memorable days of the whole year for the Year 5 children and staff alike. Different survival based activities took place in each classroom during the school day and the pupils rotated between each of them. They learned how to tie knots, create a water filtration system, sieve soil for treasure and even how to perform CPR.

After this, there was a Survival Scavenger Hunt where the children worked in groups to find a range of essential items they would need to survive. They thoroughly enjoyed this and afterwards were certainly ready for some R and R time before they put their tents up. Once they were all ready, they settled down to their evening meal and a movie under the stars (with marshmallows for a treat!).

During the Spring Term, each class also went on a fabulous sailing trip with Regatta Sailing Academy. The pupils independently sailed in groups on boats to the local island, where they also participated in a challenge to see how much rubbish they could collect from the beach and other parts of the island. Each class collected a huge amount of rubbish, filling around twelve large black bin bags in total and 5M even managed to collect a toilet seat.

During the Summer Term, the children delved deep into the mysteries of space. The term started with an amazing WOW! when we were visited by a mobile planetarium. A range of classroom based activities were introduced to the children including the effects and causes of gravity. The day culminated in a dramatic science show that thrilled the whole of Year five and got the children buzzing about what they might learn about during this term. The visit related well to one of the Summer Term’s science topics, forces, which the pupils were exposed to a few weeks later.

All in all, it has been a very memorable year for the whole of Year 5.

Mrs. Gough

Year 6 have had such a purposeful year. The children have developed many skills through their interesting enquiries and have built a comprehensive understanding of the Year 6 curriculum. As a year group, the children have matured and proved that they are ready for the Senior School. They have finished the first chapter of their education and are now poised, ready to be the author of their next.

How was World War 2 won?

Through our first enquiry, the children took a trip back in time. It all began with an air-raid siren that took the children by surprise. Diving under the tables for safety in complete silence, the children grabbed their gas masks and name labels ready to remain in their Morrison Shelter. They enjoyed comparing and contrasting the main leaders of World War 2 – Hitler and Churchill. We ended our topic with a memorable Victory in Europe Day Party, where everyone dressed up as evacuees. It was wonderful to see the children so passionate about history.

What makes a successful business?

Our Enterprise topic was one of the children’s favourite enquiries. They really enjoyed creating and organising items to sell as well as allocating the jobs equally – a real team effort. Celebrating their landing day Enterprise sale on Qatar National Day made the event more entertaining. A profit of approximately QR 8400 was made, which went towards a trip of their choice; KidZania. Here, they reaped the rewards of their hard work and learnt how to earn and spend money like an adult.

What is street art?

Our imaginations ran wild when we discovered that someone had spray-painted graffiti on the school walls. This was a chance for the children to explore their creativity, as they meticulously designed stencils to create a unique tag and graffiti piece. The best part was spray painting the graffiti outside on the school walls. Inspired by the British artist Banksy, the children were made to question his controversial artwork and understand the message behind it. They were particularly surprised by the frame that shredded Banksy’s infamous artwork. Our art exhibition at the end of the topic was fantastic – parents and teachers were encouraged to produce their own tag and have a go at spray painting.

REVIEW OF THE YEAR

What makes London special?

During this enquiry, we had great fun learning all about London. We created models of the major attractions for our ‘WOW!’ such as Big Ben and the London Eye, using cardboard and other recycled items. The children were able to write a postcard from London to their loved ones. We immersed ourselves in the life of a Londoner and even practised some of the Cockney phrases. Year 6 and the staff were privileged to have the British Ambassador to Doha visit Sherborne Qatar Prep. His Excellency gave an interesting presentation on London and answered many of the children’s questions.

They have worked hard in the classroom but also shown great enthusiasm outside of it. The wealth of experience the children have acquired over the years has prepared them for the challenge of senior school.

Year 6 have had an incredible and enjoyable last year in the Prep School.

TRADUCTION EN FRANÇAIS

This year has been another successful one for the French Department and I have enjoyed my interactions with the pupils at all levels.

Reception pupils gained more knowledge of the French language. They have been learning some songs, numbers from 1-10, colours and greetings. They also enjoyed some games which we introduced in the French classroom, especially the ‘instruction’ game. That gave the pupils more ways to interact and add to their French language vocabulary. Pupils in Years 1 and 2 have had a good experience of learning the language, using different methods including worksheets, flash cards, online songs and stories.

Similarly, pupils in Years 3 and 4 also improved their knowledge of the French language. They enjoyed in class activities, songs and games. Pupils in Years 5 and 6 had a very interesting year. The Year 6 French trip to La Veranda - a French / Italian Restaurant was very challenging for them. As well as enjoying the French breakfast they used their speaking and reading skills to be independent and order their food and drinks reading and using the French menu.

Pupils had the opportunity to have two language clubs: French and Spanish. Also, this year pupils from Year 1 to 6 have been introduced to the French programme, Linguascope using iPads and enjoying some interesting academic games, spelling words and scoring their results.

Term assessments were conducted for pupils in Years 1 to 6 to gauge their progress and advancement in the French language and I felt they all did very well and progress has been achieved by all pupils at all levels.

Mathematics

This year has been a full and exciting one for Maths at Sherborne Qatar. With the introduction of White Rose Maths, Sherborne Qatar has not only seen a significant rise in attainment across the school but more importantly a new enthusiasm and confidence for the subject, evident all the way from EYFS up to Year 6.

It has been wonderful to see so many parents join their children to enjoy open house sessions in order to develop their own understanding of the teaching strategies used, working together and using resources to problem solve.

There have been many opportunities for challenge with the G.R.E.A.T Maths enrichment clubs for Years 1 - 6. These provide an environment in which gifted mathematicians may work and learn alongside each other, stretching their understanding of maths concepts and deepening their knowledge with activities designed to extend their understanding. The UKS2 group took part in the Junior Maths Challenge with several of them gaining a prestigious bronze certificate.

Our online times table resource, Times Table Rock Stars, has provided some healthy competition between children (and teachers!) with the scoreboard being closely monitored and remarkable progress made.

The highlight of the year was Maths Week when children throughout the school came together to enjoy some magic maths activities throughout the fun filled week. There were quizzes, treasure hunts and competitions organised throughout the school.

Music

This has been the most successful year of my time at Sherborne Qatar and the work we began three years ago has finally borne fruit.

This would not have been possible without the support and dedication of the music teachers, the peripatetic staff, teachers, pupils and our wonderful parents. All this support and encouragement has been amazing. Thank you.

OUR HIGHLIGHTS OF THE YEAR HAVE BEEN:

Sherborne Qatar Prep Choir won the Repertoire Award in the Primary Choir of the Year Competition, 2019

The Sherborne Qatar Music Festival

The music recital at the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum

The performance at Lulu’s British Food Festival, opened by the British Ambassador

The performance at the third annual Ramadan Gala, in support of the Educate a Child programme

30 pupils participated in instrumental music exams this year

100 pupils learn an instrument every week

OUR LEARNING

Pre School and Reception have explored different instruments from around the world. They created different sounds for a cartoon and had an amazing experience learning about the drum kit. They also looked at the importance of performance. Pre School created loud and quiet sounds and used instruments and voices to illustrate this. Both groups then prepared many songs for the end of term assemblies and had great fun learning the songs and actions.

Key Stage 1 explored different signs and symbols and learned about the pulse of music. They became musical conductors and created rhythmic patterns. They also explored long and short sounds using voice and instruments. Key Stage 1 then further enhanced their learning through voice and understood the importance of singing in unison.

Our musical vocabulary also expanded by learning terms such as Pianissimo, Fortissimo, Crescendo and Diminuendo. In the summer term KS1 created their own instruments.

Key Stage 2 focused on the piano, keyboard and recorder. They created melodies, added chords and improved their compositions.

Years 3 and 4 had an opportunity to perform a poem, add a verbal ostinato and learned how to rap.

Understanding our voice and the importance of warming up our vocal cords was another important element for Key Stage 2. We tried various exercises with our voices and focused on diction too. The history of Western music was another focus this year. We looked at the different periods of music and what instruments existed in these times. Years 3 and 4 spent some time learning about the different instruments that might be found in an orchestra. They also learned all about the structure of pieces and they learned a body percussion ostinato to accompany a song.

Mr. Sarwar, Head of Preparatory Music
The Music Department would like to thank the PTA of Sherborne Qatar, the Sheikh Faisal Bin Qassim Al Thani Museum, Lulu’s, Al Rabban, A and Z Events, Qatar Music Academy, Al Rayyan Water, La Cantine and Al Sulaiti law firm for their support of various events during the year.

Arabic & Islamic

TFROM THE ENVIRONMENT TO SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT

he Arabic and Islamic team developed many areas of the department this year, in order to support pupil’s learning. They enhanced their teaching of Arabic by inviting Qatari authors to come and speak to the pupils and by organising other visits. This created great excitement and extended the pupils’ knowledge.

Furthermore, many stories and books in Arabic for all levels and from many different cultures, were added to the Arabic section of the school Library, thus attracting young minds towards the Arabic language.

The Arabic and Islamic Department at Sherborne Qatar aims to build a strong pathway between the school and the local environment. This year we celebrated Qatar winning the Asian Football Cup, Qatar National Day and our Reception pupils held an Arabic Language Festival. The department also held Ramadan celebrations and lessons, class Quran recitals and Islamic lectures.

For the past four years the department has collected donations for charity during Ramadan and every year the number of donations increases and we are able to make more and more donations to workers near the school.

Book Week and World Book Day were enjoyed by both staff and pupils who read and enjoyed Arabic books during the times when everyone across the whole school was asked to stop what they were doing and read.

The first Prep School Poetry Week was launched in February by our guest author Kenn Nesbitt, who captivated the children with his humour, drama and ability to rhyme! Throughout the week, the children took part in a variety of poetry writing sessions and produced some incredible poems. Kenn had the pleasure of reading many of our rhymes and judged our House Poetry Competition.

Congratulations to the winners who were: in Year 1 and 2 – Isabella Wilkin for her poem, On the Way to School; in Year 3 and 4 - Samarah Abbasi for her poem, School and in Year 5 and 6 - Saad Nabeel for his poem, The Weekend Is Over.

World Book Week in March was a resounding success in which the school came to life through a number of classic novels which were themed in each year group. Many children completed a treasure hunt solving the clues to the 21 quotes from some classic books in our reading competition.

The winners in the end were Nusaybah (RM), Amna (2R), Aisha (2H), Sara (2H), Isla (2H), Nawaal (2R), Christopher (4R), Zaid (4L), Sacher (6F), Leo (3G), Idrees (3S), Jacob (5F), Muhammad (5F), Belal (5F), Shireen (5S), Chi (5F) and Ashraf (5S).

The Year 9 children put on a wonderful performance of Alice in Wonderland and supported the Prep School children from Years 1 – 6 with some drama and writing. Pyjama day was a huge hit with the children enjoying their favourite bedtime stories for the day in their pyjamas. The week culminated with a ‘classics’ dress up day and a mannequin challenge in the school grounds.

Throughout the year, we introduced a number of new initiatives to develop our children’s love for reading. Whole class reading has seen our children read a greater variety of genres and the introduction of vocabulary rich discussions. Our library has also been refurbished and it is lovely to see so many children enjoying books in this learning environment.

In October, the Prep School teachers were trained in the Talk for Writing concept and the introduction of the process across the whole school has seen significant progress in our children’s writing. The children are also more engaged in learning spelling patterns through the spelling shed website.

Comeon!’ cried Bob (really impatiently) as they were moving across the sand. Bill was wandering behind, which was really getting on Bob’s nerves. They came to the island to explore as the resort they were staying in was next to the island. The two boys were getting bored so they decided to look for pebbles.

‘Look at this box!’ exclaimed Bob. Bill quickly came by. Carefully, they opened the shiny gold box. It was like a ray of sunshine! The boys were stone, they couldn’t believe their eyes. It was full of gold and money!

Suddenly, an angry cloud went up. A storm was brewing up. It was getting angry. Lightening struck. The boys were in shock. Bob’s heart was racing and he was panicking. Bill’s heart was pounding like some drum. A murky gloom surrounded. They both watched numbly. Both of their mouths were open. In a split second, out of the horrendous storm came a short stubby silhouette. The boys started at each other; they were petrified…

Bob and Bill ran as fast as their little legs would carry them. ‘Quick, let’s hide in here!’ It was a huge arch; quickly they went under it and hid. It was as silent as a grave. An eerie silence surrounded them. A murky gloom surrounded them. Out of the corner of his eye Bob spotted the same silhouette, it was actually a short witch-like lady with a cruel cat. The old crinkly hag looked so menacing. If she didn’t scare you then no one else can. Just looking at her made you shiver. She suddenly shone a torch on them, the boys ducked down. ‘Let’s go cat.’

Quickly the boys rushed to their bikes but they were nowhere to be seen. Tears of sorrow ran down their faces. Someone was playing with them.

Alysha in London

This is the story of Alysha in London and this is the way we tell it.

Once there was a girl called Alysha and she wanted to have a dog. She walked and she walked and she walked until she got a dog.

At that moment she lost her dog! She looked everywhere and she couldn’t find her dog. She walked to the park and she couldn’t find him. Next, she went to talk to another dog but she did not see him.

Then she went to the zoo and then she saw a white waggy tail hiding in the bushes!

Finally, she found her dog and they lived as happily as a flamingo.

THE HOUSES

Senior House Leader’s Review of the Year.

It does not seem like a year since I wrote the last Review of the Year but it must be at least that, for how else could we have managed to fit in 39 Inter-House Competitions, 5 House Days, a Friendship week, more than 20 House Meetings, hundreds of merit certificates and 3 Sports Days?

Our programme of after school competitions has been as busy and varied as ever. New events this year included House of Cards, Marble Run, Zumba and STEM challenge. These have run alongside perennial favourites such as Indoor Athletics, Football and Sherborne’s Got Talent. We try very hard to ensure the programme has something for everyone and it is always lovely when we see new faces on a Thursday afternoon. .

We are always looking for ways in which to improve and augment our House system and in September we introduced a new initiative of House ‘families’. It is well documented that a sense of belonging plays a very big part in a child’s sense of wellbeing and gives them confidence and security. Every child at Sherborne Qatar (and every member of staff) belongs to a House but we decided to take things a bit further this year by creating smaller groups within the House. Where possible each ‘family’ consists of at least one member from each year group with the Year 6 child playing a leadership role within the family. These groups have been used in House meetings and on House Days and have been very successful. They give the younger children an immediate point of contact and someone to ‘look out’ for them and they provide more leadership opportunities for our older children as well. They also enable a child to get to know a small group of children well. The plan is that, where possible, the children will stay in the same family group throughout their time at Sherborne Qatar and each year, as the older children leave, they will be replaced with younger ones.

The Year began, for the Houses, with Friendship week. This was a week where, within the classrooms, friendship was the focus and the children were encouraged to get to know new people. The Inter-House competition was a Team Building event and the week culminated in a Friendship House Day where we introduced our House Families and spent the day in activities designed to help us get to know each other better. Other House Days during the Year included an Out of this World event where the children were asked to help reunite some unfortunate aliens with their stranded spaceship, a Poetry Day and a Great Egg Race day where eggs were used in a variety of creative ways.

THE HOUSES

We are always keen to get parents involved in House events. Apart from anything else the children do love it when Mum and Dad take part. To this end, this year we have introduced a termly family event. Our Treasure Hunt, in the Autumn Term, and the Wacky Races event in the Spring were very successful although there is always room for more parents to participate! We are also aware that some children, for various reasons, are not able to attend the after school Inter-House competitions, so this year we have started a termly ‘Inter-house at Home’ competition. So far, we have had an art competition for Qatar National Day, a poetry competition to tie in with our Poetry Week and a Ramadan Photography competition. Watch out for more next year. Pre School and Reception children play a very carefully structured role in the Houses. Pre School children are welcomed to their House in a very special assembly and Reception gradually attend more House meetings and Inter-house events as the year goes on so that they are ready to be fully integrated in Year 1.

Last year, we began a Sherborne Book of Records which we inaugurated with all sorts of weird and wonderful record challenges. Our plan is to create some new records each year and to try to break some of the existing ones. This year, Powys set a new record of 205 ball passes in 3 minutes and Irons set a record of 27minutes and 37 seconds for holding a yoga pose (the tree).

Our Prefects have done a fantastic job as usual and we will be very sorry to see them move on. We would like to thank Bethany Wade and Oliver Mills for being our Heads of School and Nuran Abdalla, Nour Bakour, Ana Bea Ventorim, Sarah Irfan Barwa, Sacher Nasser, Faye Al Assadi, Talia Magbool, Harry O’Donnell, Tiara Osiago, Saad Nabeel, Joel Nowuram, Mishti Paveen, Mimi Elsheikh, Maria Al Thani, Khalid Al Thani and Maryam Aminur Rahman for being great Prefects and role models.

No review of the year would be complete of course without a mention of the Prep School Sports Day which took place at the Aspire Dome again this year. Record numbers of pupils attended and the atmosphere was fantastic, as every House competed for the coveted Sports Day Cup. As always, there were some outstanding performances from some amazing athletes and some simply gritty, determined and House loyal children. Congratulations must go to Jassim House for a memorable win.

Mrs. W illiams, Senior House Leader

Looking back over the last year there are so many amazing memories it is hard to know where to begin.

The introduction of our ‘family’ groups early on in the year was a very significant development in our House system and one which has had an extremely positive effect throughout the school. In Amna we have 13 ‘family’ groups and each group contains a child from each year group, with the older children (Year 5 or 6) taking a lead within the group. We have used these groups for most of our House days this year and it has been lovely to see the older children looking after the younger members of their ‘family’, making sure they know where they are going and working with them in activities.

Amna had good representation at most Inter-House events this year and I was proud of the ‘have a go’ attitude of the children. As usual we had our share of wins and losses but we always gave our best and we cannot ask for more than that, can we? New events this year included Sunset Art which gave us the chance to draw on the school walls, Marble Run and House of Cards. Of course, we did not forget our old favourites such as Indoor Athletics, Cross Country, Football and Ninja Warriors. We also dug out our school record book and attempted to break some of the records we set in December 2017 and added some new ones as well.

House Days this year started with Friendship Day, which came at the end of our first Friendship Week. It gave us the chance to establish our new ‘family’ groups and to get to know people in our House better. We designed and made our own Friendship Quilt which, like Amna House itself, was made up of lots of individual pieces which, together, make a beautiful creation. We also created secret handshakes and learnt a song all about friends. In December the Houses were asked to help an alien spaceship find enough fuel to propel itself back into space. Hundreds of aliens roamed the school that day making slime, solving puzzles and designing rockets and the day ended with an exciting rocket launch. Other House Days included a Great Egg Race and a Poetry Day. Our second Activity Week, at the end of June had a Circus theme and involved lots of creative activities based on this idea.

Sports Day 2019 was, as usual, held at the Aspire Dome and, as always, I was impressed with the positive and team –focused attitude of the children in Amna. Some year groups were very short of numbers and there were some children who truly deserved a medal for their ‘have a go’ attitude and commitment to their House. There were some fantastic performances and a huge amount of effort from everyone present.

Unfortunately, since the end of the 2018-19 academic year Amna has suffered the sad loss of Mrs. Ahmed who had been a staff member of our House for 8 years and a huge support for the children and the staff. She was incredibly proud of Amna House and always enjoyed Sports Day – particularly when we won. She will be very much missed by us all but I know her memory will live on for many years to come.

Mrs. Williams, House Leader Amna

IRONS

Wow! What a wonderful year Jassim have had. We have had such a successful year full of achievements, made so many memories, built new friendships and most importantly had lots of fun. Our year began with Mrs. Roberts as our House Leader and we would like to thank her for all of her efforts planning our first House day of the year, House assemblies and Inter-House events. When Mr. Fawcett asked me to take over as House Leader for Jassim I was so excited as I knew this year was going to be a good one. I am so proud of every member of Jassim for their commitments to all of our events and for working so hard to gain merits for our House. Together, they have demonstrated all of the Sherborne Qatar Values and particularly shown kindness and respect to each other as well as their teachers.

Highlights

Throughout the year, we have taken part in a wide range of fantastic Inter-House events including gymnastics, rollerball, drama, sunset art, Lego and many more! The Sherborne’s Got Talent Inter-House showcased the diverse range of talented pupils we have in Jassim and our outstanding comedians, musicians, singers and artists lead us to another victory. We have had many accomplishments throughout the year and Jassim pupils have proved that they can work as a team, encourage each other and put in 100% effort into every event. A highlight for me was the Inter-House Cross Country as it was amazing to see all of Jassim house, both children and parents, supporting and helping each other which created a lovely, positive atmosphere. Both Sports Days were also a huge success for Jassim and we were the overall winners of the Year 3 - 6 Sports Day at the Aspire Dome. Go Jassim!

We always look forward to House days here at Sherborne Qatar and it is wonderful to see Jassim pupils from each year group coming together to take part in different activities. This year, the children became very familiar with their House families and, in our first House day, created impressive House family photo frames to capture the memory of the day. In the Spring Term, the children were set a mission during our Science based house day to send the aliens back to space in a brand new rocket. The children worked hard to design a new rocket, make glow in the dark alien slime and crack the code in order to complete the mission.

Achievements

I would like to say a huge well done and thank you to the following children who have received their Jassim colours this year. These children were chosen for their commitment to Jassim House and their awards were truly well deserved. Half colours were awarded to Lucia Hanna and Jaden Nowarum. Full colours were awarded to Joel Avinash Nowuram, Noah David Hanna, Mishtee Praveen, Nuran Abdalla, Chi Yee Chong and Ali Fagier.

I would like to say a huge thank you to the children, staff and parents of Jassim House for making my first year as House Leader an enjoyable one. The commitment, effort and teamwork we have all shown as a House this year is commendable and it is such a nice community to be a part of. Finally, I cannot express enough how hard the Jassim prefects have worked this year. They have helped out with all Inter-House events, House days and assemblies, organised charity collections and ensures that they are positive role models to the younger children. Thank you so much to Bethany Wade, Nuran Abdalla, Mishtee Praveen and Joel Nowuram

Congratulations to everyone in Khalifa for winning the Inter-House Cup. This is an outstanding achievement and testament to all your hard work and dedication throughout the year.

This year, 13 Khalifa ‘families’ were established during a very special Friendship Week with each group made up of children from all year groups. This has been a really successful initiative to create a sense of unity in our House.

The Inter House programme was jam packed with events from Kwik Cricket to The Great Egg Race House Day. We enjoyed several successes scooping first place in:

Sunset Art (Years 1 – 3) House of Cards (Years 5 and 6) Rollerball (Years 5 and 6) Football (Years 3 and 4)

Khalifa House also set two new Sherborne Qatar records for the highest number of words made from Sherborne Record Breakers - 86 words. Additionally, fine motor skills were really put to the test in the spaghetti challenge. A single piece of spaghetti was split into a staggering 69 pieces. While we did not win the Year 3 – 6 Sports Day it was certainly a highlight of the year. It was heart-warming to see all of our school values being displayed throughout the day. We finished up in a very credible 4th place.

A big thank you to our amazing prefects Saad, Tiara, Mimi and Maria who have done such a wonderful job this year.

Congratulations to the following children who received their Half Colours for their outstanding contribution to Khalifa House: Leo Caldwell Isabelle Sellen Zena Ayoub Miandri Korf Samarah Abbasi Ali Al Sayegh

What a busy and successful year it has been for Powys! It is hard to believe that another year has passed and we have achieved even more than we did last year. We have welcomed lots of new staff and children to Powys this year which has made us go from strength to strength.

Highlights

It is incredibly difficult to pick only a few highlights when we have had such an exciting year. We began the Autumn Term with several, diverse Inter-House events: House of Cards, Indoor Athletics and Sunset Art to name a few. Our first family event of the year kicked off with a lively Treasure Hunt which saw Powys children race around the school to find clues to unlock the hidden treasure. A particular strength of Powys children is teamwork, so it is no surprise that we won the Lego Inter-House for Reception to Year 6. The older children in Powys are fantastic at including and supporting the younger children at whole school events. Our Year 1 and 2 children also achieved second place for Powys in the House of Cards. A particular highlight for children and staff in the Autumn Term was our Powys Party which marked our House social at the end of a busy term. We did everything from making slime, to pin the tail on the lion, to water balloon races. It was a really enjoyable afternoon.

In the Spring Term we had more Inter-house success in winning the cricket and achieving second place for our drama performance. Our house day in the Spring Term saw the children’s scientific and creative sides come to life as we became scientists for the day in order to achieve a special mission of sending aliens back to space in a new rocket. The children absolutely loved this day as they designed their own rockets, cracked alien codes and even made glow in the dark alien slime. The Summer Term began with our annual Sports Day at the Aspire Dome and all of the children should be extremely proud of themselves for taking part and being such good supporters to each other throughout. Although we did not win the cup, there is always next year. Powys have such a range of talents and this was highlighted in our Sherborne’s Got Talent show in the Summer Term. We had children performing classical piano pieces, mime and contemporary music to name a few. It is not an easy task to perform in front of such a large audience but Powys children made it look easy and came in second place.

Achievements

I have had the privilege of awarding a number of hardworking and committed Powys children with their Powys Colours this year. Full colours were awarded to Sacher Nasser, Kulsoom Syeda Rizvi, Faye Al Assadi and Maryam Al Kaabi. Half colours were awarded to Mariam Rizvi, Martha Jones and Chinomso Joel Nwoke.

As always, the success of Powys would not be possible without the dedication and encouragement of the staff and pupils. Thank you for all that you do in making Powys such a rewarding and fun House of which to be House Leader! Sadly, this will be my final year as Head of Powys House and I wish Mrs. Roberts well as she takes over. Finally, we must give an enormous thank you to our Powys prefects: Sacher Nasser, Faye Al Assadi and Khalid Mohamed Al Thani. You have been such positive role models for our House and we wish you all the best, along with the rest of our Year 6 children as you begin your new journey next year. .

Miss. Grennan, Head of Powys

Iwould like to start by thanking all the Sheppard sharks from Reception up to Year 6, as well as the Sheppard staff. What a fantastic year we have had and what a team ethos we have built. I feel like every child is proud to be a Sheppard and represent their House.

Throughout the year we have had some really close calls, placing just behind other Houses but we have had some fantastic moments and more importantly, victories as well! Most memorable for me was winning the Inter-House Cross Country earlier in the year. The tension, as Mr. Palfrey announced the House positions throughout, the day was immense. Sheppard led and dropped in position but finally we were announced as overall winners. Even better, every child in Sheppard completed their course displaying a fantastic attitude.

This success kept rolling into Sports Days and although we didn’t top the House table, we left with our heads held high as we were highly competitive, especially in Key Stage 2. I witnessed Year 3s stepping up to compete in Year 4 races and even finals and also Year 4s in Year 5s and Year 5s in Year 6s. The future is bright blue for Sheppard. I really do not think I have had a prouder day in my life. A huge thank you to every child who turned up to an amazing day at the Aspire Dome.

House days have been fun too. I think the Sheppards would agree that slime making during our Out of This World day was the most memorable activity we did. It has been lovely seeing the year groups mix and cooperatively working together in their family groups. I was so impressed by Reception, Year 1 and Year 2 during our Egg house day. The imagination and creativity were amazing. Hamad in Year 1 even created an egg scene with a window so that, “Mrs. Williams from Amna couldn’t steal his egg”. Circus Day sent laughter across the hall as Mr. Sheppard himself got custard pies in the face which I think was a good ending to the year for all the Sheppards.

Next year I have no doubt we will go on to achieve great things again. The other Houses had better be on their toes because there’s a big blue wave coming full of Sheppard sharks!

2018-2019

What an incredible year is has been! I am proud to say that the academic year 2018 – 2019 was an incredibly successful year for the children. My three main highlights of the year can be represented by three numbers: 178 4 3.

178 represents the total number of medals the children have won across all the QPPSSA events and BISQ Games this year.

4 is 4th Place, which was was our finishing position at the BISQ Games this year, the best result we have ever achieved.

3 recognises that we achieved something very special this year by winning the QPPSSA Cross Country for the 3rd year in a row. This achievement was recognised by the media outlet Gulf Youth Sport who wrote an article about our success.

Thank you to the children for all their hard work in PE lessons, Inter-House competitions, team training, QPPSSA tournaments and the BISQ Games. Every single parent, child and member of staff at the Prep School has played a part in our sporting success this year.

A special thank you is owed to Miss. Molineaux and Miss. Cartwright. Their passion and commitment have been unquestionable throughout the year and the positive effect they have had on the children on a daily basis is a testament to that.

TRIPSABROAD Cambodia 2019

It was hot, very humid, and full of mosquitoes… but somehow, we were all very excited about arriving in Cambodia and especially about going to our UWS partner school, Som Roung, and meeting all the children. We had a good feeling.

At the beginning we were all a little nervous since we were not too sure what was expected from us or how we were to teach children who did not understand or speak English. We planned our lessons for the classes in advance but did not really know if the children would be able to complete the tasks.

On arrival at the school we were greeted by a larger crowd of people and children than I have ever experienced before. I was moved to tears behind my sunglasses but tears of happiness. Everyone was waving, clapping and smiling and all the children wanted to give you a cuddle.

The children were happy and they would understand and appreciate, at all times that we were there to help them. They all wanted to learn English, either through song or repeating what we said. In the same classroom there were children who would understand us and others that would just repeat anything we would say.

As we just woke up on the second day the children had already started to arrive as they were very excited to see us again. Once the morning routines had been completed, which consisted of cleaning the classes, emptying the bins, watering the garden and making the school ready for learning, the children all got together in their lines and sang the Cambodian national anthem as the flag was raised. Then they enjoyed some physical activities to get their brains ready for the classrooms. Smiling and full of life they sat down and paid attention as their teacher or we spoke to them and started to teach them.

It was an inspiring to watch these children get on and have so much fun. If the children didn’t understand what we were saying we would show them and they would soon get it.

During our wonderful visit the children showed so many of our own school values, without being asked or taught. We saw perseverance in trying to learn a new song in English, teamwork in building bridges from different materials, responsibility when bringing to school and looking after their younger siblings, respect in listening to ourselves as strangers to them, kindness in smiling and showing us around their wonderful village and school and honesty, giving us thumbs up or thumbs down if they liked our lessons (great lesson reflection).

When it came to our last day in Cambodia, it was time to say goodbye to everyone we met… and this beautiful country. We had only spent three days at the school and a week in Cambodia but we had all fallen in love with the country, the experience and particularly the children at school.

We all felt it was so much more than we had expected.

Oman 2019

5

This year, 18 lucky Year 5 pupils travelled on a residential trip to Oman with Mr. Flanagan, Mrs. Ahmed and Mrs. Bennett. It was most of the children’s first time away from their parents, so there were some tears shed (by the parents) at the airport before we set off. Our first night in Muscat was a great start to the trip; the children had 5 Omani Riyal to buy the best item they could find, in 20 minutes, at the Souq. We were amazed with some of the haggling skills of the children as they all returned with some impressive bargains for their money.

The next morning the excitement really began as we set off on our journey to Jebal Shams. There was no time for missing parents because as soon as we pulled up our itinerary was action packed and filled with lots of fun activities and challenges. There was something to suit every child in the group. There was hiking, orienteering, tent building, team building, cooking, raft-building, star gazing and abseiling to name a few. These activities were all led by Becky and Chris, our highly trained and experienced Oman staff.

Above all, the children learned lots of valuable life skills about camping and living in the wild. There were many highlights throughout the week but our last night, by the campfire with smores, was really special as we reflected on our whole week and presented each child with their own unique certificate for something they did extremely well that week. Again, we finished with the egg drop competition this year. Great teamwork was displayed as two groups managed to save their egg from cracking when it was dropped from a height.

Mr. Flanagan

Year 6

What amazing experiences Year 6 had on their coastal trip. Our tents were pitched carefully on the sand, making for a very comfortable base, although rather scratchy sleeping bags at times. This did not seem to matter as each night, we rolled into our canvas shelters very happily, to recharge our batteries for another day of activity and excitement.

We took full advantage of the beach location and made rafts, racing them in teams, soon discovering that more work may be needed on our knotting skills. We swam, created sand art by day and at night and were enthralled by the awe inspiring night sky.

A huge highlight was the day we went to sea in very fast boats –although the motion of the boat was enough to set some of the group to sleep (again!). We spotted a school of dolphins, darting in and out of the water alongside us. We anchored near a small cove and prepared to snorkel – for many, a first experience and tricky to get the hang of. It was worth it however; some of us caught sight of a turtle or two. They say that sea air makes you hungry and this was certainly the case after our trip - the day ended with a delicious meal at a local sailing club.

Back on land we enjoyed rock climbing and abseiling and the local goats were very interested in what we were up to. We were enchanted by our tour of the Grand Mosque followed by a thrilling visit to the Science Centre where so much was learned in such a fun way about the world around us.

Each evening we looked forward to delicious al fresco meals and games as the sun set. Our final late activity included storytelling and singing around a campfire, toasting marshmallows and reflecting on our achievements and good times throughout the week.

Roll on Oman 2020!

ASSOCIATION

Where has the year gone? It only feels like a few months ago that the PTA was planning its first event this academic year and our very first Family Fun Day. Unbeknownst to us, we would all experience the October floods of 2018. The day started off sunny and warm, everything was going really well, and it was good to see lots of parents and children. Then the rain came, so everyone joined in the games in the Atrium and Sports Hall and it was wonderful to see a mixed age range of children playing netball and football alongside each other.

In early December we hosted our ever-popular Winter Fair. I was very excited because we were able to arrange an ice sculpture of a snowman, which took pride of place in Reception.

There was a fantastic selection of external vendors selling jewellery, paintings, clothes and fresh fruit juices. Yet again, thanks to your donations, the tea room was full of cakes and biscuits. Popcorn was as popular as ever and some extremely tasty pies were on sale. This year we had a few changes to the games on offer. There was biscuit decoration, henna, wet sponge a friend, golf, House team games, various inflatables and lots of music and singing. Food was provided by Nando’s and Ocean Basket.

The Bake Sale at the Prep School was, as always, very busy! Once again, we had some amazing and extremely kind donations of cakes and biscuits. In addition, we have managed to host a few coffee mornings at the Prep School and we were able to support the U11 BISQ Games by selling drinks and snacks. Our last event of the year was the Quiz Night in June.

As a result of the PTA events this year and last year, we have been able to donate the following to the school:

PE Department – The PTA has paid for sports kits for both the Prep and Senior Schools for this academic year and additional monies will be forwarded in preparation for additional kits for 2019 / 2020.

EYFS – The PTA has been able to pay for some new bikes for the children.

House Teams – The PTA purchased House banners for every House team in the Prep and Senior school.

Senior School Reception – a Nespresso Coffee machine was bought for visitors’ use. Our plan is to purchase another Nespresso Coffee machine for the Prep School Reception.

School Choir – 40 new t-shirts were donated for the School choir.

PTA

Financial donations were made to the Musicians’ Recital at the Sheikh Faizal Museum, the Senior School play and the Senior School Science Week Competition.

We do hope you have enjoyed taking part in the PTA Throw- Back Thursday photo competition and this will continue in the new academic year.

Thank you to the parents, children, headmasters and staff, for once again providing your support to the PTA. Without your help and assistance, we would not be able to do anything that we do.

Enrichment

We have had an incredible year of enrichment at Sherborne Qatar Preparatory School, successfully run by our passionate teachers and outside providers. These clubs are a fantastic opportunity for children to learn a new skill, face a new challenge or just spend the afternoon doing something they enjoy. They are mostly run by teachers, keen to share their passions and hobbies with the children, but we also have highly accredited outside providers who deliver enrichment as well, such as Taekwondo, Sailing, Chinese, Yoga, Gymnastics, Yoga, Basketball and Football. We have had a hugely diverse range of enrichment activities for the children to try and each year we continue to expand our enrichment to ensure we are delivering the best to the children. .

This year we have had more than 50 different clubs on offer for the children, which have included many new clubs such as Spanish, Gaelic, Zumba, Mad Scientists, Curiosity Club, Swimming, Dabke Club, Ramadan Celebration Club, Sketching, HIIT, Handball, Street Art, Just Dance, Musical Theatre and many more, as well as the return of many popular clubs which included sports, languages, art and design, music, cooking, story-telling, Rainbows and Brownies and cultural clubs. It has been fantastic to see the children engaged and enjoying their enrichment, and we strongly recommend that every child attends at least one club a week.

We also had our first ever Enrichment Showcase, which we hope to continue in future years. This took place at the end of the Autumn Term and was an opportunity for the children to show their parents what they had achieved. We saw performances from the Rainbows, Recorder Club, Taekwondo, the KS1 and KS2 Choirs, Musical Theatre, Dance Club and African Drumming. Other clubs also displayed what they had been doing and we saw an Art exhibition, Lego construction and other fantastic displays. It was also a chance for parents to see what the outside providers can offer and the showcase included representatives from Swimming, Sailing, Football, Fencing, Taekwondo, Dance and Basketball.

Overall, we have had a fantastic year of enrichment from which the children have greatly benefited! We hope to see many more children enjoy the vast array of enrichment on offer next year!

Y EAR 6 LEAVERS

A WELCOME SPEECH FROM MRS GOUGH , HEAD OF UPPER KEY STAGE 2, AT THE YEAR 6 END OF YEAR CELEBRATORY TEA

Some of the children here have been at Sherborne Qatar Preparatory School since Reception and I am delighted that Mrs. Fawcett, who will have had the pleasure of teaching them and nurturing them at the start of their journey has been able to join us this afternoon. Those children have experienced many developments to the school, having started at our Bani Hajer site and been amongst the first pupils to enjoy Al Rayyan. They will have embraced and befriended – in the way that our pupils do so well - children who have joined them along the way. We are so lucky at Sherborne Qatar that we (and I do include parents and staff in this) have the opportunity to make lasting global friendships. They will have had the impact of many teachers who have helped shape them in one way or another into the members of the school who we are so proud of today.

Last year I used the analogy of a series of doors being along the route of a child’s journey through school – they are there to be opened and stepped through, perhaps tentatively at first, to face new experiences and challenges. Today I want to use the concept of books. Your book (I wonder what it would be called) opened from the moment you started at Sherborne Qatar. You are now coming to the end of chapter 1 and that is what we are here to mark. Chapter 2 is about to start and although it has not been written yet, you all have the pen in your hands and will be the author of your life, not the reader. Embrace the challenges ahead, learn from your mistakes.

On some of the pages, there may have been ink blots, scribbled out bits, and rewrites resulting in a session of improvement with your purple polishing pens! Some things have not quite gone according to plan but that is OK – together with your successes, those mistakes have what have shaped you into what you are.

Your teachers, who have been your editors, have celebrated the well-written parts of the chapter and have helped you re-write other bits by supporting you when there is another way of writing it. Even if there have been occasions when you have you have been called in to talk with the publishers (bear with me on this one, Mr. Fawcett, Mr. Payne or me), that is OK - I can say that now - the end result, the publication of your first chapter has been proof read and you are ready to start on the next one. On behalf of the children, I would like to thank the teachers, past and present for guiding these children along the way.

So, this is an exciting time. We may see tears, have nostalgic moments, find our goodbyes to each other hard to say as the term ends but to quote one of my favourite book characters, Winnie the Pooh, ‘How lucky I am to have something that makes saying goodbye so hard.’ He also aptly reflects that, ‘I must go forward where I have never been, instead of backwards where I have.’

Year 6 – now is the time to get on with writing your book! Nod at the past and smile at your future. Take chances – shoot for the moon; even if you miss, you will land among stars.

FROM THE

Bursar

I do believe that the pupils make the most significant contribution to the success of a school.

I often consider what is it that makes a good school. Some researchers suggest leadership and high expectations, whilst others say curriculum, facilities, evaluation, goals and direction. I believe it is true to say that it is a combination of all these and other things. Ultimately, I do believe that the pupils make the most significant contribution to the success of a school.

In essence, they are a representation of what they learn in school. At Sherborne we are fortunate to have young people who display a range of talents and skills in the academic and sporting fields as well as the arts. When I walk around the school every day, I see lots of happy and enthusiastic learners.

Their determination to succeed, their pride and participation in school life all help to make Sherborne a great school. The 2019 Commem celebrations and contents of this publication bear witness to all that they enjoy and achieve.I share the pride that all the parents must feel.

I extend my congratulations to all the pupils who have worked so hard throughout the year. Progress can be measured in different ways, and it is important for pupils, individually, to recognise and acknowledge their own efforts.

If you believe you did your best, then you should be proud of yourself, if you believe you can do better, then you have learned something about yourself, which is an important life skill in itself. Know yourself and you will understand instinctively what you need to do to achieve your goals.

My best wishes to you all.
