PRINCIPAL’S WELCOME

Dear Parents and Carers,

It is my great pleasure to welcome you to Sherborne Qatar School for Girls. As Principal, I am proud to lead a school that not only upholds the rich heritage and traditions of Sherborne UK, but also reflects the vibrant, forward-thinking spirit of Qatar. Together, these values shape a unique educational environment where each girl is encouraged to grow in confidence, curiosity, and compassion.

At the heart of our school is a bold commitment to girls’ education—one that champions academic excellence, personal development, and a future-focused curriculum rooted in STEM. As a dedicated STEM school, we prepare our students not only to succeed in the world—but to shape it. From the earliest years, our girls are immersed in a learning environment where science, technology, engineering, and mathematics are celebrated, applied, and brought to life through inquiry, creativity, and real-world problem-solving. We want every girl to see herself as a scientist, a coder, an engineer, a leader—confident in her

But our ambition for your daughter goes beyond subject mastery. Sherborne Qatar School for Girls is a warm, inclusive, and aspirational community where each child is known, challenged, and supported. We place equal importance on character, compassion, and wellbeing— developing confident, resilient young women who lead with integrity and empathy.

Our school values are woven into every aspect of school life. These guideposts help us nurture not just excellent students, but thoughtful citizens ready to contribute to a changing world with courage and conviction.

As a parent myself, I know the importance of finding a school where your daughter will be seen, valued, and inspired. Whether she is starting her educational journey with us in Preschool or joining us in one of the older year groups, I want to assure you that she will be welcomed into a school where she can thrive.

Thank you for choosing Sherborne Qatar School for Girls. We are excited to partner with you on this remarkable journey.

Warm regards,

INTRODUCING OUR TEAM

KEY INFORMATION

ACADEMIC

At Sherborne Qatar School for Girls, we believe that education should be inspiring, inclusive, and firmly focused on the future. Our academic programme is designed to cultivate confident, capable, and curious learners who are equipped not only with subject knowledge, but with the skills, habits, and mindset to thrive in a rapidly changing world.

We follow the English National Curriculum, tailored to suit our unique setting as an allgirls school in Qatar. Our approach blends academic rigour with creativity, enquiry, and innovation. Lessons are active, engaging, and rich in real-world relevance—encouraging our girls to explore, question, and connect their learning to life beyond the classroom.

As Qatar’s only dedicated British STEM school for girls, we place Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics at the heart of our curriculum. STEM is not taught in isolation—it is a philosophy that underpins all learning, promoting innovation, critical thinking, and collaboration across subjects. We offer state-of-the-art facilities, including excellent Science laboratories, a Maker Space, a Coding / Robotics Room and a Virtual Reality Room, providing pupils with unique opportunities to engage in handson learning and real-world problem-solving. Our “Bring Your Own Device” (BYOD) policy ensures that pupils from Year 1 upwards incorporate technology seamlessly into their learning experiences.

A JOURNEY

OF GROWTH: EYFS TO KS5

Our curriculum supports girls through every stage of their development, from their earliest school experiences in Preschool to AS Levels in Year 12.

• Early Years (Pre-School & Reception): A joyful, play-based environment that nurtures independence, curiosity, and communication.

• Key Stages 1 & 2 (Years 1–6): Strong foundations in literacy and numeracy are built through broad, thematic learning. STEM is embedded through hands-on projects and dedicated ‘STEM time’.

• Key Stage 3 (Years 7–9): A broad, specialisttaught curriculum that encourages deep thinking, independence, and inquirybased learning.

• Key Stage 4 (Years 10–11): Pupils follow a personalised IGCSE pathway, that allows them to explore their interests while building a strong academic profile for future study. The curriculum remains firmly grounded in our STEM ethos, ensuring girls are well-prepared for the digital and global landscape ahead.

• Key Stage 5 (Year 12): we are proud to provide a growing AS Level programme that offers depth, academic challenge, and personalised guidance. Our Year 12 students benefit from small class sizes and specialist teaching that supports university preparation and further study in a range of disciplines.

OUR SIX LEARNING DISPOSITIONS

Alongside academic success, we place great importance on developing the personal qualities that will enable our girls to thrive long after they leave school. Our six learning dispositions shape how our pupils approach learning and life: Confidence, Reflective, Enquiring, Aspirational, Thoughtful and Expressive. These dispositions are taught, modelled, and embedded across every stage of the school, helping our girls understand themselves as learners and leaders.

LANGUAGES, CULTURE, AND PERSONAL DEVELOPMENT

In line with MoEHE requirements, all pupils study Arabic, Islamic Studies, and Qatari History. Native Arabic speakers learn these subjects in Arabic; non-native speakers follow them in English. All Muslim pupils receive Islamic Studies, and all first-language Arabic speakers study Arabic as a core subject.

Pupils also follow a PSHE programme that supports their wellbeing and reflects the school’s mission, values, and ethos—helping them grow into respectful, responsible, and reflective young women.

BEYOND THE CLASSROOM

Learning extends well beyond lessons at Sherborne Qatar School for Girls. Our enrichment programme offers a wide range of clubs, activities, and leadership opportunities before, during, and after school. From robotics and STEM challenges to music, drama, sports, and Model United Nations, girls are encouraged to explore new interests, build confidence, and grow as wellrounded individuals.

ASSESSMENT

Assessment is integral to high-quality teaching and learning and plays a key role in understanding and supporting pupil progress. At Sherborne Qatar School for Girls, we use a balanced approach that combines formative (ongoing) and summative (formal) assessment strategies to monitor learning, guide instruction, and ensure each girl reaches her full potential. Pupils are assessed in a variety of ways, including:

• Formative Assessment (daily, ongoing):

• Teacher questioning and classroom discussion

• Observation of practical tasks and participation

• Enquiry-based projects and presentations

• Marking and feedback on written and verbal work

• Peer and self-assessment activities

• Use of success criteria and learning objectives

• Summative Assessment (planned, formal):

• End-of-unit or termly assessments

• Internal tests and standardised assessments

• Formal exams at Key Stage 4 (IGCSE)

• Formal exams at Key Stage 5 (AS Level)

ATTENDANCE & ABSENCE REPORTING

Regular attendance is vital for academic success and personal development. Our school target is 90%, in line with Ministry of Education expectations, though we encourage all pupils to aim higher.

Arriving Late:

If your daughter arrives after the start of the school day, please sign her in at Reception.

Reporting Absence:

Please email the Form Teacher by 8:00am on the day of absence with a brief reason. Unexplained absences will be marked as unauthorised and recorded on your child’s report.

Monitoring Attendance:

Attendance is tracked by the Form Teacher, Head of Year, and Senior Leadership Team. If attendance falls below 90%, parents will receive a warning letter. Continued poor attendance may be reported to the Ministry and could affect your daughter’s place at school.

Requesting Leave:

All planned absences must be requested in writing to the Deputy Head. Each case is reviewed individually.

We are here to support your daughter, but we ask all families to prioritise attendance and help make every school day count.

BRING YOUR OWN DEVICE

As a STEM-focused and Microsoft-affiliated school, digital learning is embedded in everything we do. From Year 1 onwards, all pupils are required to bring a personal device to school each day, as part of our Bring Your Own Device (BYOD) programme.

Devices are used daily across the curriculum to enhance engagement, collaboration, and creativity. The girls build key skills in areas such as networks, media creation, data handling, and programming. These skills are transferable and prepare pupils for success in further education and the modern workplace.

All pupils are issued with a school email account which enables access to the school’s Microsoft 365 suite (including Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams). Pupils can also work toward Microsoft certifications, providing them with valuable, internationally recognised qualifications. Devices may be purchased independently or through our school partnership with Mannai Trading, which offers convenient packages tailored to our requirements. Popup shops may also be available on-site during the school year.

For detailed device specifications and setup instructions, please refer to the school’s BYOD Guidelines, available upon enrolment or via the school office.

As part of our continued commitment to digital learning and a secure, productive educational environment, we would like to share the recommended laptop specifications for pupils at Sherborne Qatar School.

These specifications are carefully selected to ensure compatibility with the school’s secure systems, such as Microsoft Azure Active Directory (Azure AD), Microsoft Intune, and other Microsoft 365 services that we use to manage and protect student devices.

Recommended Laptop Specifications

Component Specification

Operating System Windows 11 (Professional / Education / Enterprise Edition)

Processor (CPU) Intel Core i5 (13th Gen or newer) OR AMD Ryzen 5 (7000 series or newer)

Memory (RAM) 8 GB or Higher

Storage 128 GB SSD or Higher

Display 13” Screen or Larger

Accessories Keyboard, Mousepad, Charger

Why Windows Professional / Education / Enterprise Editions Are Required

Using Windows Professional, Education, or Enterprise editions allows us to provide your child with a safe, secure, and distraction-free learning experience.

These editions support the following essential features:

• Remote Device Management: Through Azure AD and Intune, we can remotely configure settings, install applications, apply updates, and support students.

• Web & App Restrictions: We can block access to inappropriate websites, games, and unauthorized software to ensure a focused learning environment.

• Security Enforcement: Devices can be encrypted (BitLocker), antivirus protection can be enabled, and secure user policies enforced (e.g., screen lockouts, strong passwords).

• Learning Tool Deployment: Essential school applications such as Microsoft Teams, Word, OneNote, and PowerPoint can be automatically installed and managed.

**Please note that laptops running Windows Home Edition are not compatible with our school’s security and management systems and are therefore not supported.

Why not an iPad or Apple Mac?

Although Apple devices provide learning facilities, we have noticed that they do not support the use of Microsoft software as easily as Microsoft Surface devices with a windows operating system. The software that we use in the classroom is better accessed through these devices and we have purchased docking stations for the IT classrooms that fit these devices.

We appreciate your support in helping us create a digitally safe and academically focused environment. If you have any questions or require assistance, please feel free to contact the IT department at itn@sherborneqatar.org.

CANTEEN

Our provider offers a wide variety of healthy snacks, drinks and meals from our Senior Canteen before, during and after school. The canteen is currently available as an alternative to packed lunch for pupils in Years 4 upwards. We operate a cashless system for pupils from Year 4 – Year 12, using cards to purchase food and drink. Credit can only be added to the cards by parents online. Your daughter will receive a card from the form teacher at the beginning of the year, or new or replacement cards can be received from the cafeteria staff directly for a small fee of QAR 15.

Pupils from Preschool to Year 3 are required to bring in packed lunches brought from home. In terms of packed lunches, please note in line with our health-promoting school ethos, sweets and chocolate are discouraged and fizzy / energy drinks are not allowed. Due to the allergies of others, seeds and nuts are forbidden in school. Thank you for your understanding.

COMMUNICATION

At Sherborne Qatar School for Girls, we believe that strong, open communication between home and school is key to every pupil’s success. As a new member of our community, you’ll find that we place great value on clear, timely, and supportive communication.

Your daughter’s Form Teacher will be your main point of contact throughout the year. They are there to support both academic progress and pastoral care. You can also reach out to Academic / Pastoral Leads and the Senior Leadership Team as needed.

We use a variety of channels to stay connected with parents:

• Class Dojo – For daily updates, reminders, and key information via the ‘Class Story’ or ‘School Story’.

• Email – For important letters and communication from teachers or the school office.

• Weekly Newsletters – A snapshot of the week, upcoming dates, and useful reminders.

• Social Media – Follow us on our official platforms for highlights from school life and celebrations of pupil achievements.

• Parent Portal – Our secure platform where you can access key school policies, reports, and assessment information.

Upon your child’s admission, you will receive an activation email containing instructions on how to access these resources. If you do not receive this, please contact Ms Simi Jacobs at sjacobs@sherborneqatar.org

We are a warm and welcoming school, and we encourage you to stay in touch. Whether it’s by phone, email, or in person, our doors are always open.

HOUSE SYSTEM

Our Houses are named after inspirational, motivational and highly successful women, three Qatari and three British. When a girl enters the school, she is placed in one of these Houses and stays with that House for the entirety of her time at the school. Parents are be notified which House their daughter is in before the start of term. Siblings, wherever possible, are placed in the same House.

Form Teachers have the day to day responsibility for the welfare of pupils in their forms and they monitor pupil progress by taking account what is happening in a pupil’s life. Additionally, all pupils and staff belong to one of six Houses which allow for the vertical integration of pupils and the Heads of House, in particular, become important people in helping to shape and guide the pupils out of the classroom.

Each house has House Reps who are elected by staff and pupils in their house. They will be involved in actively organising teams for various events throughout the year. House events will include sporting, academic and creative arts events. When participating in house events pupils are required to wear their house shirts. Every Thursday, all pupils are required to wear their House shirts as they will be participating in House activities.

RAMADAN

Ramadan is a special time in our school calendar, and we are proud to honour it with sensitivity, respect, and a strong sense of community. During the holy month, we make adjustments to ensure all pupils—whether fasting or not—feel supported and included.

The school day is shortened during Ramadan in line with Ministry guidance. As a result, lessons are slightly shorter but continue to follow the full academic programme. Pupils are expected to attend school as normal, and attendance remains compulsory throughout the month.

PE lessons are thoughtfully adapted to accommodate pupils who are fasting. Activities are adjusted in intensity and scheduling to ensure all girls continue to learn safely and comfortably.

Non-fasting pupils are only allowed to eat and drink in the designated area – the canteenduring break times. We ask all pupils to be respectful of others during this time and observe the school’s guidance on behaviour and conduct during Ramadan.

We take pride in celebrating the spirit of Ramadan within our school community. Each year, we host a Garangao celebration, where pupils enjoy traditional games and activities, and we invite all Sherborne Qatar families to join us for a school Iftar—a meaningful evening of reflection, unity, and togetherness.

THE ENRICHMENT PROGRAMME

We provide our pupils with a broad range of extra-curricular activities for all abilities and skill sets. Parents will receive details of each of the activities on offer and whether there is a cost or not at the beginning of the academic year, or when their daughter joins the school. Activities fall into five categories of provision:

1. Sports

2. Creativity and Performing Arts

3. Design and Technology

4. Languages and Environment

5. Academics

TERM DATES

Term starts on 31st August 2025.

IMPORTANT FORMS – MEDICAL, PHOTO

CONSENT, IT AGREEMENT AND HOME SCHOOL AGREEMENT

At Sherborne Qatar we have a comprehensive range of policies that cover all facets of school life. Many of these are readily available on our website or on the parent portal. Other useful information, including up-to-date inspection reports can be found on the website too.

Parents will be asked to complete and submit the following documents before their daughter starts school – Home-School agreement, IT Child and Parent User agreements, photo consent and, in Preschool, an Intimate Care policy.

The health and well-being of our pupils is so important. To ensure we are giving your child the appropriate care and advice, it is essential that our medical records are up to date. As such, all new parents are asked to complete and submit an online medical form before their children start school. It is your responsibility as parents to keep us informed of any changes to the medical needs of your child or medication. Failure to keep us informed may result in your child not being able to enter school.

THE PARENT TEACHER ASSOCIATION (PTA)

Dear Parents,

A warm welcome to Sherborne Qatar Schools! On behalf of the Sherborne Qatar Parent Teacher Association (PTA), I am delighted to introduce you to the PTA. We are a group of parents and teachers, whose priority is the well-being of our children and supporting the school community.

Throughout the year we have various fundraisers and events designed to provide funds to enrich our children’s educational experience, over and above what the school would be expected to provide from fees.

We are excited to build community across all of the schools within the Sherborne Qatar family. We are proud to bring those schools together and create connections across the schools and foster community amongst our parents and children.

In March 2023, we were thrilled to welcome over 2,000 people from the Sherborne Qatar community to the Spring Fair, hosted at the Senior School. It was the first time since 2019 we have been able to host such an event and it was a huge success. This is just one of the events we have planned for the year to come.

Your involvement and support are highly valued and greatly appreciated. If you would like to know more then please contact us on SherborneqatarPTA@gmail.com. Please keep an eye on regular notices from the PTA.

Kind Regards
