Getting the Right Subject Combination

Different university courses need different A Level combinations. Here’s where our guidance makes the difference:

UCAS SUCCESS

WHY OUR PUPILS GET SO MANY OFFERS

Here’s something worth celebrating: in 2025, 62% of our UCAS applicants received offers from all five universities. Another 18% received four offers. That’s 80% with four or more offers to choose from. Why does this matter? Choice. You’re not forced to accept your only option, you’re selecting between excellent universities, confident you’ve got a firm choice and a solid backup.

WHAT MAKES OUR APPLICATIONS STAND OUT?

Strategic University Selection

We help you choose five universities that balance ambition with realism, analysing entry requirements and your predicted grades to build a smart application strategy. Compelling Personal Statements Through workshops and individual reviews, we help you craft statements that showcase your genuine passion, demonstrate relevant knowledge, and highlight what makes you different.

Medicine? You’ll need Chemistry and Biology, usually with a third science or Mathematics

Engineering? Mathematics and Physics are essential, often with Further Mathematics

Law? No specific subjects required, but essay-based subjects like History, English, or Politics are excellent preparation

Business & Economics? Mathematics is often preferred; Economics A Level is helpful but not always required

Computer Science? Mathematics is usually essential; Computer Science A Level helps but isn’t always required

We’ll help you make informed choices from day one, ensuring you’re building the right profile for your chosen path.

Strong References

Your teachers know you well. Their references bring your application to life, highlighting your academic strengths and personal qualities.

Interview Preparation

For Medicine, Oxbridge, and other competitive courses:

• Mock interviews with experienced staff

• Detailed feedback and coaching

• Practice with typical questions

• Confidence-building strategies

These results don’t happen by chance, they’re the result of expert guidance, strategic planning, and your hard work.

Challenge yourself physically, mentally, and socially through expeditions, skill development, volunteering.

Subject Enrichment

Mathematics Olympiads • Science competitions • Essay competitions • Language exchanges • Art exhibitions • Drama performances • Visiting speakers and masterclasses

Community Service

Give back through volunteering—mentor younger pupils, support local charities, or lead community projects. Develop empathy and leadership whilst making a real difference.

Why This Matters

Universities want more than exam results, they want wellrounded individuals with passion, leadership experience, and genuine interests. These experiences give you something compelling to discuss in interviews and personal statements.

More than that, they make your Sixth Form years memorable. In ten years, you’ll remember leading MUN or completing your Gold Award just as vividly as your exam results.

LIFE BEYOND THE CLASSROOM: SKILLS FOR INDEPENDENCE

Mastering The Basics: Sewing & Garment Care

In this hands-on session, pupils step into the world of practical creativity as they learn to operate a sewing machine with confidence. From practising essential stitches to mastering the art of ironing garments, they gain skills that blend independence with craftsmanship. It’s a confidence-boosting introduction to looking after themselves-and their clothes-beyond school life.

Under The Bonnet: Car Basics & Maintenance

In this practical introduction to car mechanics, pupils discover what’s actually happening beneath the bonnet. They learn how to identify key components, where to refill water, how to check oil levels, and what basic maintenance looks like. These essential life skills help pupils feel capable, safe, and ready for the responsibilities of vehicle ownership.

Money Matters: Understanding Tax & The HMRC

Through engaging activities and real-life scenarios, pupils demystify tax-what it is, why we pay it, and how it affects them once they enter employment in the UK. By exploring the role of HMRC and the responsibilities of taxpayers, pupils gain a practical foundation that prepares them for adult financial life long before their first payslip arrives.

Ready, Steady, Cook: Meal Planning & Cooking

This session puts pupils in charge of the full culinary journey. After researching a dish they can prepare within an hour, pupils source their own ingredients and take the lead in cooking their chosen meal. With teachers supervising only for health and safety, pupils experience the satisfaction of planning, preparing, cooking, and tidying up-an essential step toward independent living.

Build It, Break It: Flat-Pack Construction

From IKEA-style assembly to careful deconstruction, pupils tackle the challenge of building their own flat-pack step stool using only written instructions. Once built, they must take it apart again without damaging any pieces-strengthening patience, accuracy, and problemsolving. These real-world DIY skills empower students to approach future tasks with know-how and confidence.

LEADERSHIP & PUPIL

VOICE DEVELOPING TOMORROW’S LEADERS

Leadership at Sherborne School isn’t about titles on your CV, it’s about genuine responsibility that develops real skills. Whether you’re mentoring Year 11 pupils through their IGCSEs, supporting younger year groups as an Ambassador, or taking on whole-school responsibilities as a Senior Prefect, you’ll build the confidence and capabilities that universities and employers truly value.

Academic Mentoring: Leading Through Expertise

High-achieving Sixth Formers offer targeted academic guidance to Year 11 pupils in subjects where they excelled at IGCSE. Through tailored explanations, support with understanding complex content, and sharing effective revision strategies, mentors help younger pupils develop confidence, organisation, and academic resilience. This programme not only raises attainment in Year 11 but also strengthens you own own communication, leadership, and coaching skills as a Sixth Former, preparing you for university and beyond.

Ambassadors Programme: Developing Pastoral Leaders

Selected Year 12 pupils mentor and support Years 7, 8, and 9 pupils with weekly pastoral guidance. You’ll help younger pupils manage workload, stay organised, develop study habits, and maintain a positive attitude. It’s leadership through care—developing your communication and empathy whilst younger pupils benefit from relatable, approachable support.

The programme fosters a culture of care, aspiration, and shared responsibility across the school community.

Senior Prefects: Leadership in Action

Each Senior Prefect works with a specific Year Group alongside the Head of Year, visiting tutor groups, addressing assemblies, and helping younger pupils develop aspirations and study habits. You’ll also help and support Parent Evenings, major events like the Spring Fair, and Prep School activities. Earlier this year, Senior Prefects led our Subject and Careers Workshops, giving Year 11 pupils firsthand insight into A-level expectations and future opportunities.

Academic Mentoring Programme

Our Sixth Form pupils play a vital role in guiding Year 11 pupils through their subject choices for A Level study. Through one-to-one discussions and subject workshops, they share firsthand experiences of their courses, offering honest insights into what each subject really entails.

This peer-to-peer mentoring helps younger pupils make informed, confident decisions about their Sixth Form pathway, whilst developing leadership and communication skills in our mentors.

Qatari Ambassadors Programme

Year 12 Qatari pupils mentor younger pupils across various year groups in our dedicated Sixth Form Majlis, a space designed to foster meaningful dialogue and cultural exchange.

The programme builds bridges between year groups whilst celebrating Qatari identity and developing leadership skills. Through regular mentoring sessions, our ambassadors provide guidance, support, and role modelling, creating a strong sense of community throughout the school.
