I am delighted to welcome you to the 2022-2023 edition of the Qatar Shirburnian. The pages that follow are a snapshot of the hard work taking place within our schools by both pupils and staff.

This year, the Sherborne Qatar family of schools continued its period of growth as we welcome the first cohort of pupils to the Junior School at the newly refurbished and former site of the Senior School, Bani Hajer. We welcome Mrs Mary Robertson-Barnett and her new team and look forward to reading about their first year.

In June, it was wonderful to see all schools were able to invite parents to attend their respective Commems. The events were a rich mix of celebration of achievement and pupils’ performances and were all extremely well attended by members of the Sherborne Qatar community. If you were not able to attend, please do take the opportunity to watch the highlights on our social media channels.

All that remains for me to do is to thank the pupils for all their hard work, to acknowledge the dedication of our support and teaching staff and to thank you, the parents, for your continued support.

The pages that follow help to capture the essence of what our school is all about, based on the most recent chapter in our journey – the 2022/23 academic year. For the first time in four years we have all been together as one community.

What we saw earlier with our Year 6s planning, coordinating and ultimately leading this morning’s events, is the end result - the real story lies behind these wonderful examples. Our children live in the moment and embrace challenges on all sorts of different levels, everyday – that’s a fact about our school. This is a huge credit to you, our parents and our teaching team, expertly laying the foundations and creating an environment in which the children feel confident enough to have a go and try everything.

The following is an extract from my end of year address, during our Commem celebration: As I hand over the Headship of our wonderful school to Mrs Heidi Berry, as Mr Prowse did to me back in 2016, I would like to spend a moment, if I may, sharing why I believe ‘Prep’ and The Sherborne family of Schools is genuinely like no other in the country.

We have come out of recent adversity stronger and I stand before you today as the proud Head of a school that is achieving outstanding progress and academic results, brilliant success across a range of sports and a stunning outpouring of creativity within the performing arts. Woven into each of these aspects of Sherborne are our Learning Dispositions and Moral Values.

These vital and intangible skills exist in every child: the ability to collaborate on a task, to work through a challenge or problem, to walk on stage in front of an audience or to understand the responsibilities they have to their communities and the wider world – to make a positive difference. What we do is help to foster our pupils’ brilliance.

How do we do this?

Well to start with, we have an amazing foundation. The way we feel on account of all that we have achieved as a school is complemented by the happy knowledge that we are members of a community that is caring, kind and compassionate.

It is this close knit, nurturing community that ensures our children feel safe and secure, ready to embrace the challenge and joy of learning, growing and

If, as parents, we think about our own children’s personal progress this year, not just in their academics, but also more broadly and contemplate the challenges faced by them to achieve the ‘end result’, then they become even more significant.

Acknowledging this journey, and not just the ‘end result’ or outcome, is hugely important to us. That’s why – through embedding our Learning Dispositions into our curriculum and then observing and ‘assessing’ these more formally through Years 4, 5 and 6, as part of our approach – our way of learning, helps children develop more broadly and become more worldly-wise. This has become our new approach to our teaching and learning – The Sherborne WAY:

Launched last year with our Year 4s, children are regularly observed and assessed formatively by their form teacher, to gauge their understanding, as well as beginning to use and apply our Learning Dispositions in a range of contexts.

But it’s not just children in Years 4 – 6 ….

Every child in this room has stood up this year, put themselves out of their comfort zone, addressed their inner fears and presented themselves on stage – and

what a range of stages – from public speaking to class assemblies, from drama performances and Sherborne’s Got Talent, to learning an instrument or trying a new sport or activity – not just the big stuff either – every single day in class too.

In one walk around school at any given time you see many examples, presenting themselves in a multitude of ways. In fact, it is the ‘little stuff’ that really counts.

Who’s heard of the game Jenga? What is it? What happens?

Now – imagine playing a game of Jenga in reverse – constantly adding blocks, each block making the tower stronger, more robust. That’s what we do with our approach to education here at Sherborne – we help our children, your children, to build their personal Jenga – except our Sherborne Jenga isn’t wooden blocks – it’s our moral values and learning dispositions. You see, they’re not just words on a wall – they are intrinsic to all we do.

So, to answer my original question ….!

How do we do this?

Accomplishing this isn’t by chance – by crossing our fingers and ‘hoping’. Of course, opportunities do present themselves constantly that we haven’t planned or prepared for specifically. But by believing in the importance of these virtues, we carefully craft opportunities for these to be understood and developed, throughout all that we do – not bolted on, or left as words on the wall, to ‘look good’ or for a marketing push.

Every learning opportunity we provide is not a tick on a national curriculum sheet, it’s a moment for our pupils to build their personal Jenga. Every time you challenge yourself in the classroom or achieve a personal best in athletics for example, you add another block to make your tower / your foundations – making who you are even stronger. That’s what we’re working on together, every day, as part of one big community and team.

What really elevates and distinguishes Sherborne as a community is the dedication of my colleagues. The investment that they make in the lives of our children goes well beyond professional obligation. The intrinsic drive to give of themselves to such an extent comes from the belief that what we do can and does make a real difference to young lives. Teaching is a challenging career and our teachers are much more than custodians of their subjects and profession. What we ask of them requires a unique combination of skills, character attributes and a real generosity of spirit.

The PTA is also definitely back up and running with what was an amazing Spring Fair. Re-galvanized by the utterly inspiring and incredibly talented Mrs Gill Johnsen she and her ever growing band of incredible volunteers, many of whom are from our Prep community, are going to further strengthen our Sherborne family once more, just as they did prior to COVID. However, across four schools, it’s going to be massively exciting. So please, do keep the PTA in mind if you wish to join a wonderful group of people doing wonderful things for our school community.

Will you choose a life of ease or one of service and adventure?

Parents: I thank you for entrusting your children to us once again. Schooling is perhaps the biggest decision we make as parents. It may well be the most expensive. Be assured, we do not take that commitment for granted. We understand that it is a bond which we must continually earn and renew. Your expectations are justifiably high; I trust we are not just meeting them but exceeding them.

To the pupils as a whole: I hope you recognise yourselves and all that you have achieved in what you have seen and heard today. Thank you for being you. Go off, rest, recuperate. You’ll need to – because in a couple of months, you go again and whether here, senior school or elsewhere, I’m sure by the way you have approached this year that 2023/24 will be exhilarating and inspiring!

So, from tomorrow, the first day of your holidays, you can author your own story – how will you use your gifts, what choices will you make. Because once it’s all said and done that’s what it comes down to:

Will inertia be your guide or will you follow your passions?

Will you follow dogma or will you be original?

Will you wilt under criticism or follow your convictions?

Will you bluff it out when you’re wrong or will you apologise?

Will you play it safe, or be a little bit swashbuckling?

When it’s tough, will you give up or will you be relentless?

Will you be a cynic or will you be a builder?

Will you be clever at the expense of others, or will you be kind?

Because in the end we are our choices – build yourself a great story.

Failure is not the opposite of success, it’s part of it; once you accept that, you can do anything. As Walt Disney said, ‘If you dream it, you can achieve – now go out there and change the world – I’ll be looking out for you!’

I recognise that a Head is only ever a temporary custodian of a school. Heads are not the school – it is our amazing staff in front of me who are the real critical mass here. They are the reason that the longer children are at Sherborne Qatar Prep the more progress they make, far ahead of the UK average.

I was listening to a podcast recently where Jeff Bazos was speaking and it really got me thinking, so as I come to the end, I’d like to share it with you to consider as you look to the future.

Think about your choices in life – you can choose a life of ease and comfort, or you can choose a life of service and adventure – which one of those when you’re 90

Looking Back, Looking Ahead!

What a fantastic year this has been for the Prep School! When I think back to my highlights of the year, events like the International Day parade come to mind, where we had more than 500 pupils gathering on the Astro, proudly dressed in their national attire, waving flags and banners at their parents and singing in unison to celebrate the diversity of our school. Another wonderful memory from this year is the trip to Kidzania with the Year 1 team. There is something very special about soaking up the experience through the hearts and minds of 5 year olds! The list of memorable, large scale events is endless: house days… sporting successes… landing days… and many, many more, because that is what our Sherborne provision is about: fun-filled experiences that make learning memorable. Of course, I have a massive appreciation for all that I have mentioned above, because there is great effort that goes into each event, be it from staff, parents or pupils. However, it is also the regular, usual stuff, that happens on a

daily basis which makes me immensely proud to be part of our school community because this is where we witness what it means to be a pupil at Sherborne Qatar Prep School – working as part of a team; being respectful and kind to one another, demonstrating resilience in the face of challenge and curiosity when experiencing new learning. Our values and learning dispositions are the building blocks to all the ‘formal’ learning that progress is measured against. By getting the foundation right, we produce learners for life: well-rounded Shirburnians.

To our oldest pupils moving onto Year 7, and to others who will be leaving the Prep School this summer, I would like to wish you the very best of luck. Enjoy the next chapter that awaits you. There will be days when you will succeed, and this will make you very proud of yourselves. Then there will be other days when you will fail and this may fill you with sadness and disappointment, but there will be a learning opportunity in all that you experience. Remember, you choose how you respond to it, knowing that adults who care and want the best for you, will always be there to guide and support you.

As I look forward to the next chapter that awaits me, I would like to take a moment to say a heartfelt THANK YOU to every single one of you. From my very first visit to the Prep School, I knew I would enjoy being part of this community – watching children grow as they make their way through the school; building strong relationships with parents and working with a caring and dedicated team. It makes me very proud to see what we have created together. Taking on a new role within the Sherborne Qatar family of schools means that this is not goodbye to Prep pupils, parents and staff, it is simply, until we meet again.

History

Sherborne School is an independent boys’ boarding school re- founded in 1550 under a royal charter granted by King Edward VI. It has grown into a modern school of nearly 600 pupils and about 100 teaching staff. Surrounded by the bustling market town, the school attracts pupils from across the world.

Sherborne Preparatory School is an independent co-educational school for children aged 3-13 years. The school has a long and distinguished history and an enviable academic reputation as a feeder to many of England’s leading independent schools. As of April 2021 Sherborne Preparatory School has been part of Sherborne School.

Sherborne Qatar was founded in 2009 and is a joint venture between Sherborne School and Sheikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Thani. Members of the Qatari royal family such as the Emir, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, have attended Sherborne and Sheikh Abdullah and his wife Sheikha Amal have sent some of their sons there too.

Shirburnians follow a diverse range of careers at the highest levels and include diplomats, bishops, politicians, journalists, actors, poets and musicians.

Sheikh Abdulla was keen that Sherborne should join him in a partnership to bring to Qatar education opportunities and values that he had seen and liked at Sherborne. He says: “Ahmed our oldest son was transformed by Sherborne. The school’s approach helped him to discover different talents in himself and he was greatly nourished by the experience. We are extremely grateful for what a Sherborne education has given him. Sherborne has history, culture, discipline and a willingness to transform a child. That is what it did for our child and that is what we want to give to Qatar. We need to bring a more structured educational experience to our country. Qatar needs Sherborne’s culture, experience and tradition.”

Sherborne Qatar is a founding member of Qatar’s Ministry of Education & Further Education Outstanding Schools Initiative and is overseen by the Ministry’s Private Schools Office. Sherborne Qatar is a self-financed, not-for-profit school with its own Board of Governors, of which Sherborne School has half of the appointed membership. Our ethos, brand and educational standards are overseen by and aligned to Sherborne School.

Pre-Prep It is hard to believe that I have completed my first year at Sherborne Qatar Prep School. Already very familiar with the Sherborne Penny and the values it represents after 15 years teaching at Sherborne Prep UK, I arrived last August to a very hot, dusty Qatar, curious to see how these values would play out in a different country and culture.

I needn’t have worried – the family atmosphere, excellent pastoral care and engaging curriculum felt pleasingly familiar and it has been wonderful to work with the Senior Leadership Team and Pre-Prep staff, pupils and their families to ensure we are striving ever forwards in our pursuit of all-round excellence.

The Pre-Prep pupils have achieved so much through the year – many of them taking on challenges for the first time: sports days, international days, assemblies, stay and play sessions, trips out, visitors in, house days...the list goes on.

Shirburnians tackle new challenges with resilience and determination; success being measured by the journey rather than the outcome. Our Pre-Prep pupils lead on this – their ability to take risks, to learn from mistakes, to persevere, is an example to us all.

I would like to thank the staff, pupils and parents for helping to make this year the success it has been; not only for helping me to settle into the Sherborne Qatar family, but for their hard work and enthusiasm for life which makes every day a pleasure and a joy.

As we look to the excitement of the coming year and all the adventures it will bring, we also say a sad and very fond farewell to those staff and families who are leaving us to embark on new adventures elsewhere – we wish them well and hope that they will take the values of Sherborne with them.

Preschool As this academic year draws to a close, it is wonderful to look back and reflect on all the amazing things that the children have experienced and achieved. We feel so blessed that they have been able to experience a full year in school without Covid-19 restrictions, allowing them to explore, share, take trips and most of all be children!

The year began with the children learning how to share and play with their new friends. We learnt different nursery rhymes and dressed up as our favourite characters. We began to learn the routines of school life and got to know specialist subjects of Music, Arabic and Islamic studies. Our next topic, What do we notice about animals? had us exploring different patterns of stripy and spotty animals. We met our Ten Town numbers and began to explore What we can see with maths all around us.

My favourite part of this topic was watching the children learn their Talk for Write book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, seeing and hearing them retell the story using different actions. We all made our own bears when Build a Bear came into school and had to say a little rhyme when we put a heart into each bear. Soon it was World Cup fever. The children adored learning the World Cup songs and dancing to the music… in fact they still love this!

After the long winter break the children returned to school a little taller, braver and quickly settled back into school life. I love the Spring Term as this is when the children begin to shine and their learning takes off. As the weather cooled down we took the opportunity to learn about What Grows, planting our own seeds and watching them grow. The children loved to be outside exploring in the mud kitchen and collecting bugs from the garden to observe. We took a trip to the farm to see where our vegetables are grown. We even got to make our own salads in a real ‘farm to fork’ experience. By now the children had become little experts in using different maths equipment, such as five frames, and spotting different

subitising amounts. They also became more independent in the classroom learning, for example, how to choose their own challenges and games and how to tidy them away properly.

Before we knew it the Summer Term was upon us! The children began to learn their phonics sounds, identifying the sounds of different objects around the classroom and carefully decoding Fred Words. We met different people in our school such as the nurses and the maintenance team, learning about how they helped us and even singing them a special thank you song! We visited Kidzania to try different professions, such as being a doctor or scientist!

It has been an amazing, fun filled year. We are all so proud of the progress our Pre-Schoolers have made. They have made friends, learnt to follow instructions and rules, count, subitise, sing, dance and tell stories, to name but a few of their achievements!

Reception What an incredible year we have had in Reception! From FIFA World Cup celebrations to Earth Day and celebrating King Charles’ Coronation, the children have been enriched with wonderful memories they will cherish for many years.

At the beginning of the year, the children were extremely brave coming back to school to new Reception classes. They developed new friendships, learned new routines and tried their best to learn and demonstrate the Sherborne Values.

After settling, the children fully immersed themselves into all our wonderful enquiries. Firstly, propelling into our, Why am I super? enquiry, they developed and applied all the Learning Dispositions needed to be a Superhero. After that, they continued to be Superhero Explorers throughout our, Who are our everyday heroes? enquiry. They showed curiosity through exploring, investigating and roleplaying all about, Everyday heroes who help us. The Reception children were aspiring vets, dentists, doctors, nurses, firefighters and police officers. We had video footage from a real life doctor, nurse and firefighter, who gave them a great insight into how they help people when they are unwell or in danger. Firefighter Crowley kindly answered questions related to his vocation from our inquisitive learners.

This year was quite unique as we had an extended break mid-way through the academic year because Qatar was hosting the FIFA World Cup. This brought us fantastic opportunities for learning. We had a wonderful time celebrating and thoroughly enjoyed sharing all of the children’s ‘once in a lifetime’ experiences, from football matches to fireworks displays and spectacular shows all over Qatar.

In the Spring Term they were excited to come back to school to see their friends and eager to continue learning new skills. They jetted off around the world, using stories their wonderful experiences and imagination. We visited different countries and explored the similarities and differences of many cultures. They explored many different animal habitats around the world and found out some amazing facts. Did you know that a giraffe can be as tall as a two story house?

During our Summer Term Enquiries, we explored Who lived in a castle? by learning stories about knights and castles and building our own castles using

a range of materials such as wooden blocks, foam bricks and junk modelling.

We used this enquiry to help us learn about the King’s Coronation. We also enhanced our learning about space and explored What can you find in space?.

The children thoroughly enjoyed exploring stories and learning new Maths and Literacy skills, using the theme of Space through their continuous provision.

The Reception teachers are incredibly proud of the children and their wonderful progression in school. They are all, Fantastic Focus, Have a go Heroes, Super Explorer Heroes and Keep it up Captains. We are certain they will continue to develop these qualities as they progress to Year One and beyond.

What a breath of fresh air this year has been! We are so grateful for all the ‘normal’ things we have finally been able to accomplish this year: children in school every day, face-to-face parent meetings, a whole year group production, school trips, parent workshops, House events, WOW days... the list is endless! The continuation of our Sherborne Way curriculum has been wonderful, with lots of exciting opportunities for the children. I know I speak for all the Year 1 staff when I say it has been such a successful, positive year!

The children’s transition from Reception was made much easier with our enhanced provision style of teaching and learning. This provides opportunities for the children to grow, not only academically, but also socially and emotionally. Of course, lots of the experiences mentioned already were completely new to our children, therefore ensuring a smooth transition in terms of the way the children learn every day was very important to us. We are certain that the children we have taught this year have developed their confidence, ambition, independence and resilience but, most importantly, they have enjoyed every minute! Each Year 1 classroom is constantly filled with laughter, smiles and a positive energy that just cannot be put into words, creating the most wonderful learning environment.

Our learning journey has included a trip down the yellow brick road to visit Dorothy, our Little Chef’s series of healthy recipes, trips to Kidzania and Bounce, fun dress-up days, a pesky dinosaur invading our school, whole school celebrations, House days, helping the environment with our One World for Year 1 initiative and last, but by no means least, our hugely successful production of There’s a Sunflower in my Supper! We worked together as a team to create a live production packed with catchy songs, dazzling dancing and amazing acting.

I am sure that everybody who came to watch was thoroughly entertained and impressed by the efforts that went into the show. We are beyond proud of the children for all they have achieved this year.

Thank you to the Year 1 teachers and teaching assistants who always go the extra mile to provide such a wonderful education for the children we teach and to the parents for your ongoing support, words of gratitude and excellent feedback. It really is a team effort and what a team it has been!

We have had a wonderful year in Year 2 this year, filled with lots of fun and learning. It has been amazing to have our first ‘normal’ year after the pandemic where children have been in school full time, all year long. This has definitely been something to celebrate! Taking this into account, along with the much anticipated World Cup, this academic year has certainly been a memorable one for staff, children and parents alike.

Walking along the Year 2 corridor on a daily basis makes me so proud as the ‘buzz’ for learning can be felt no matter which way you turn. Whether it be a practical Maths lesson, a retelling of a story in English or researching a new idea in Enquiry, it is guaranteed that you will find children who are fully emersed in their learning journey. Our children have demonstrated outstanding skills in curiosity, creativity, independence, risk taking, leadership, communication and resilience. They are proud of their learning and equally, we could not be prouder of them.

During the Autumn Term Year 2 children enjoyed our first Enquiry, Travel and Flight in which they displayed fantastic Design and Technology skills - testing the suitability of different materials to make boats. Our class boat races were very exciting indeed! Next followed our Road to 2022 Enquiry which involved everything World Cup! During this Enquiry, we enjoyed our penalty shoot out day and had the pleasure of watching 2M and 2B perform their class assembly.

Our first Spring Term Enquiry was From Sand to Snow – Across the World We Go! The children enjoyed learning about different climates and comparing the

weather and landscapes of other countries with Qatar. We visited Snow Dunes at Festival City mall which we thoroughly enjoyed! Our next Enquiry was Food Glorious Food in which we were transported to Mr Wonka’s factory. We watched 2G and 2F’s fabulous class assembly and designed and created our own tasty pizzas. We learned about what different animals eat and what they need to survive as well as carrying out an experiment about what happens to Skittles in water.

The Summer Term began with our Enchanted Garden Enquiry in which we enjoyed discovering Sherborne’s very own enchanted garden and learnt about plants and what they need to grow. We enjoyed planting seeds and observing their growth. Finally, we ended our year with our Fashion and Trends Enquiry, in which we learnt about different materials and their suitability to make different items of clothing. We designed and made our own spectacular t-shirts and hats and revealed these in our exciting fashion show! We ended the year with a fun-filled trip to KidZania which was a huge success!

I would like to take this opportunity to thank our fantastic Year 2 teachers and teaching assistants for their efforts in making this year a very successful one. I would also like to thank all Year 2 parents for their continuous support throughout the year.

KEY STAGE

This academic year will be remembered as the return to normality following three challenging years that preceded it because of the Covid-19 pandemic.

Key Stage Two has been a hive of activity throughout this academic year and I am so grateful for the hard work and commitment of the teaching staff as well as the support staff who work incredibly hard each and every day to support our wonderful pupils.

It was a pleasure to return to End of Term Prize Giving assemblies, providing a wonderful opportunity at the end of each term for parents and pupils to congregate and celebrate the term’s achievements together. We were treated to performances by the school choir and our performing arts group.

The Year 3 and Year 5 productions also made a very welcome return and what a show the pupils put on! The hard work and dedication from all pupils, learning their lines, projecting their voices and adding some exciting drama and humour made for two very entertaining performances, which were thoroughly enjoyed by all parents!

I am coming to the end of my sixth year at Sherborne Qatar. The pupils I first taught will be entering the first year of their A Levels in August and it gives me huge satisfaction each time I see them at the Senior School, knowing that they are Shirburnians in every way; I know they will have a hugely positive impact on society in two years’ time when they enter further education or the job world. It is this that motivates me to continue the work in the Prep School, knowing the years fly by and the impact we have all had on the adults of tomorrow cannot be underestimated.

For the second year running, we have supported pupils with the Junior Duke Awards (a version of the Duke of Edinburgh's Award Scheme, but for younger children). More than 80 pupils between Years 3 and 6 signed up to the award programme with the Year 3 pupils participating in the Bronze Award through to Year 6 working towards their Platinum Award. Our Head Nurse – Rebecca Baron – delivered a first aid course for all Junior Duke participants. Each level of Junior Duke learned about different content which was progressively more challenging towards Year 6. The Year 6 pupils learned about CPR and dealing with a choking casualty.

Caélan Rolt in Year 3 was one of the Bronze Award participants. Caélan successfully met the criteria and received his Bronze Award at the end of Year 3 and is looking forward to starting the Silver Award in Year 4. He told me that a highlight of the award was progressing with his Parkour and said, ‘Parkour is a great and challenging sport which builds strength, speed and fitness. I really enjoyed improving my Parkour skills as part of the Junior Duke Award.’ This is just one example of the way in which Sherborne Qatar Prep School supports pupils with life-long skills demonstrating true Shirburnians.

Year 3.

Year 3 has been an exciting year full of adventure, from preparing for the World Cup to rehearsing for a performance that took us back in time. Year 3 children have been the pioneering cohort of children in Lower Key Stage 2 to take part in Sherborne Qatar’s technology programme Bring Your Own Device (BYOD).

The programme has been a great success, as children have been able to use their devices to enhance their learning and access classroom resources. By utilising their devices, children have become more independent learners, taking ownership of their learning experience. Moreover, children have had the chance to reunite, collaborate, enjoy school trips, and actively participate in their daily life at Sherborne.

In the Autumn Term, Year 3 children prepared for the exceptional 2023 World Cup event. Celebrating the World Cup in school was an unforgettable experience for the children as they witnessed their country’s preparations for the event. In Enquiry lessons, children located the participating World Cup countries on maps, researched their population, local food and climate, to gain a better understanding of these nations. Additionally, children discussed the different nationalities of players who would be participating in the tournament.

Furthermore, children celebrated and learned about African culture, with Africa Day being a significant highlight. During the event, children listened to African music, wore brightly coloured clothes, practised the art of weaving and created Africa masks inspired by various tribes in Africa.

In the Spring Term, Year 3 delved into the history of Ancient Egypt, during which they travelled back in time and learned about the land of the pharaohs. Children fully embraced this enquiry and their knowledge about this ancient civilisation flourished, as they learned how to write hieroglyphics and about the process of mummification.

responsibilities whilst working as a team. We were immensely proud of their progress and stage presence, given this was their first production - BRAVO! As the Summer Term began, children were introduced to the new enquiry, A Force of Nature, where they created hurricanes in a jar. Through this exciting enquiry, children learned about natural disasters and their occurrence. Moreover, children created a non-chronological report on volcanoes and investigated ways to simulate eruptions.

Overall, it has been a fantastic year filled with many learning opportunities. In addition to classroom learning, the children have also participated in various extracurricular activities such as sports competitions, school trips, Times Table Rockstars competitions, and The Book Factor. The children should be immensely proud of their accomplishments.

Year 4.

The Year 4 pupils have had a remarkable year, as they were given their first opportunity at Sherborne Qatar to experience and demonstrate the assessment element of The Sherborne Way. Through the assimilation and integration of our learning dispositions – Creativity, Independence, Curiosity, Resilience, Communication, and Risk-Taking – the pupils have aimed to demonstrate them in their school life and home life. As a result, the Year 4 teachers have witnessed the pupils’ transformation into confident, life-long leaners who will leave Sherborne Qatar (at whatever stage) with genuine life skills that will support them in any environment. In accordance with The Sherborne Way’s assessment criteria, the pupils were required to illustrate their comprehension of and the consistent use of each disposition in their daily lives, to acquire a sticker from their teacher for that disposition.

Demonstrating their commitment to half of the dispositions earned the pupils a Distinguished certificate and, upon completing all of them, they received The Sherborne Way Bronze Award.

Into the Deep was the first theme that Year 4 covered as the children dived deep into the rainforests of the world and learned about the environmental impact of deforestation and plastic pollution. This lead to the children working with Mr Jose from the Doha Environmental Action Project. Mr Jose came into school to speak to Year 4 about the impact of plastic pollution and what we can do to try and improve this. This led to the children going to The Singing Sand Dunes to help clean the desert of all the plastic and rubbish. Mr Jose and the Year 4 teachers were so impressed by the hard work and perseverance the children showed as they went on to collect 300kg of trash!

As the Spring Term began, Year 4 embarked on the theme entitled I am a Warrior. Throughout this theme, the pupils delved into the rich history of warriors in Great Britain. A highlight of this theme was when the pupils got a visit from a resident Viking himself. The Viking (who bared a striking resemblance to Mr Jerram!) arrived one morning and delivered a passionate speech to all of Year 4 encouraging them to join him in the battle of protect their town. The pupils responded with enthusiastic support for the Viking’s cause. Following this visit, the pupils returned to their classroom to explore the impact and features of a high-quality speech which led to them composing and performing their own independent speeches.

The Summer Term culminated with the theme Bright Spark for Year 4 pupils.

Throughout this theme the pupils devoted numerous hours in the Science Lab, performing experiments to develop successful electrical circuits. The children’s demonstration of their learning dispositions proved to be crucial in this task, as they independently investigated how to effectively light a bulb. In addition, the pupils had the opportunity to enhance their life skills and exhibit their learning dispositions during a school trip to KidZania. This trip served as another occasion for the pupils to strive towards earning The Sherborne Way Bronze badge.

UPPER KEY STAGE 2.

Year 5.

It has been a fantastic year for the Year 5 pupils as they have navigated themselves through space, Ancient Greece and the polar regions! To see all of Year 5 together again after such a strange few years has been wonderful and the children have thrived from being able to celebrate success as a year group.

The year started with the children entering the Future World to embark on a mission to Mars, learning about the way in which our solar system works and the future of space travel. As we immersed ourselves in this topic, we began to understand better the lives of astronauts in space and even got to explore a space shuttle, thanks to the use of virtual reality headsets! Year 5’s creativity was highlighted through Art this term, taking inspiration from artist Jackson Pollock. The children loved dripping and splatting paint in this unique style of artwork. In English, the children produced excellent Sci-Fi stories that they proudly shared with each other. It was great to end the Autumn Term with our very own Living Museum, where parents were invited to come and view their child’s independent research.

In the Spring Term we travelled to the Ancient World and the children discovered what life was like as an Ancient Greek. We studied key historical events of the time period and opinions were divided when we debated which city-state is more favourable: Athens or Sparta. Our Greek Day was a highlight for many children, allowing them to create delicate Greek vases and compete in the Ancient Greek style Olympics. We were also delighted to offer an exhilarating trip this term to Quest, allowing children to have hours of fun rock climbing, playing laser tag and going on humungous (and scary!) rollercoasters.

The Summer Term saw Year 5 displaying their passion for looking after our environment through our theme Lost World. We gathered lots of recyclable materials and asked the children to think about where all of this rubbish ends up and what we can do to help reduce the waste. Thinking deeper, we looked at how global warming and pollution is affecting our polar regions, coastlines and oceans. The children enjoyed learning about animals and plants in Science and immersed themselves in technology, using green screen and websites to advertise for our production. Once again, we improved our artistic capabilities,

creating beautiful water colour pictures of Antarctica in the style of David McEown.

This year the Year 5 team were thrilled to be able to showcase the children’s talents through our production First kids in Space. This is the first time in three years that we have been able to do this and it was a huge success!

For the first time at Sherborne Prep, we introduced a Formula One Day at school, where children worked in groups to design, create and test their very own Formula One race car. The atmosphere the whole week was electric!

UPPER KEY STAGE 2.

Year 6.

Year 6 is always an interesting year for our pupils because it is their last year with the Preparatory School. A main focus for the year is to encourage our pupils to become independent and organised in preparation for their transition to Senior School, whilst enjoying a year of interesting topics filled with new skills to learn and develop.

We started the Autumn Term studying the Enquiry topic Wars of the World with a focus on the impact of world wars on everyday lives, the lives of children and how women’s roles changed over time. We were privileged in being able to have a video call with the grandfather of two of our pupils. He lived during World War Two and shared the experience of living through the war and how this impacted his life.

Throughout this topic we looked at map reading skills and the chronology of events. We led the school’s annual Remembrance Assembly during which we read poems, shared facts and sang a beautiful song in memory of soldiers and civilians who have died in wars. We rounded up our Enquiry with a Victory in Europe (VE) Landing Day to mark the day that World War Two officially ended in Europe. We enjoyed wartime foods, sheltering from the air raid sirens and craft activities from the time.

The term concluded with the build-up to the Qatar World Cup 2022, in which we completed some World Cup based activities involving poetry, logo making and conducting our own research.

The Spring Term commenced with an exciting Formula One week during which we worked in teams to use research material and our scientific knowledge to construct a car that was built to certain specifications. We raced the cars on a purpose-built track to identify an overall winner, showcasing our teamwork skills and perseverance.

Our topic for the Spring Term was Unsolved Mysteries in which we studied mysteries such as the Bermuda Triangle, Area 51 and Bigfoot. The highlight of this topic was our studies and artwork based on the style of Banksy, who

mysteriously paints graffiti artwork across the UK. We used a photo of ourselves, our name and images of the things we like to create stencils which we spray painted onto canvases. We also made a visit to Sherborne Senior School where we met some of the teachers and participated in some computing challenges.

This was a great opportunity to have a taste of what life will be like next year.

Our term was rounded off with an exciting trip to Doha Quest. We had a thrill on the rollercoasters, supported our friends in overcoming fears and budgeted our spending money throughout the day.

The Summer Term focused on Sports Around the World in which we researched unusual sports, the chronology of the Olympics and autobiographies of famous sports personalities. Our trip to Kidzania set the scene for our final Enquiry and gave us an insight into how to build up money to work towards a specific goal, whilst having fun along the way. Our Enterprise topic concluded the term with an entrepreneurial bang! We developed our teamwork skills, creativity and time management by designing and creating a product which would appeal to our target market and make a profit.

With the move to Senior School just a summer holiday away it is safe to say the final year in the Prep School has offered the pupils a wide range of opportunities to discover and develop their skills and unique talents.

Arabic & Islamic Studies This year has been truly rich in activity. Pupils in the Arabic and Islamic Studies Department have made us proud of their continued success and achievement.

This year was filled with enjoyable and eventful activities. Pupils participated in numerous competitions organised by the Ministry of Education and Higher Education (MoEHE), such as the Quran Recitation Competition, Reading Olympiads, the Hadith competition, and the Heritage/Identity competition.

The pupils achieved exceptional results in all these competitions.

The Arabic Department relies on both curriculum-based (in-class) and noncurriculum-based (out-of-class) activities to support the Arabic language and culture. These include the Muslim scholars research project, the project of ancient architecture in Qatar, as well as integration with English language materials in several units of study.

The Writing Expression Week was a highlight, in which pupils wrote about the World Cup and Ramadan poems. They also wore traditional clothes on Qaranqaho day and read stories by both International and Qatari authors, in collaboration with Hamad Bin Khalifa University on World Reading Day. Qatari writer, Sheikha Al Ziyara, visited the school to read some stories to the children.

Additionally, a section was allocated to display children’s books in the school during the Book Fair. There was also a weekly Enrichment activity to support Arabic speaking skills and the art of Arabic calligraphy.

The department also implemented a monthly MoEHE programme called My Values Shape My Identity. There were activities on multiple values such as responsibility, cooperation, respect, and community assistance.

The department carried out a charitable project entitled Ramadan Suitcase to help the poor people in the local community. This activity has been a tradition since the school’s opening in 2009.

English Sherborne Qatar Prep has had an incredible year of learning across each area of the English curriculum. To maximise the children’s engagement and opportunities to achieve success when learning, all staff have worked extremely hard to explore new resources, strategies and approaches to utilise when teaching English lessons. This year, there has been a particular focus on encouraging and promoting a strong reading culture throughout the school and developing the children’s core writing skills.

World Book Day In March, we celebrated World Book Day and our fantastic Heads of House helped to plan and create a fun-filled day of engaging and exciting activities to encourage a love of reading throughout the school. The children enjoyed spending time reading with the younger classes, sharing their favourite stories and even reading in another language to their peers!

Talk for Writing Earlier in the year Jo Pearce, an accredited Talk for Writing consultant, visited each of our Sherborne schools to provide teaching, learning and leadership support for all staff. She was extremely impressed with the lessons that she observed, the interactions that she had with the children and the consistency of planning and teaching approaches within year groups and across campuses. Staff found the training that she delivered extremely useful in helping them to further develop their current teaching practices and to provide them with new and exciting ways to implement Talk for Writing lessons in the classroom. Maths Sherborne Qatar Prep has had an amazing year filled with lots of learning across the school and it has been filled with opportunities for everybody.

Now that Covid-19 has ended, it has been great to see Maths being taught in the usual way with access to all the resources. The Heads of Year have been working hard on trying to build in some Maths skills to cross over and cover other foundation subjects. During STEM week, the children completed many problem-solving investigations linked into their measurement unit.

We were fortunate to be able to provide Maths training for staff across all the schools in the Sherborne Qatar family. A Maths specialist from White Rose Education flew out, spent time with each school and delivered a range of staff CPD. It was great to have him join us and refresh our memories of the Mastery approach and how to use the resources within our lessons. After a successful week, we offered a parent workshop during which the specialist delivered a presentation outlining the approach we use in school and how parents can support their children at home. This was a great turnout with more than 100 people in attendance.

On the final day of the Maths training, the Head of International Training at White Rose Maths delivered a sold-out event to staff from a range of schools in Qatar. The aim was to share good practice and provide opportunities to establish links with other schools.

Towards the end of the academic year, we were contacted by Maths Circle who have designed Times Table Rockstars. They came into school to observe how we use the application and how effective this is for us and the children. They have written a blog on their website, sharing what they have seen.

As we complete another fantastic year of fun filled Maths we look forward to continuing to build on our connections with other schools and form opportunities for the children to visit and work together.

French During the year French lessons have been very interesting and busy.

Reception pupils gained more knowledge of the French language. They have been learning some songs, numbers from 1-10, colours and greetings. They enjoyed some games that we played in the French classroom, especially the Instruction game. I enjoyed teaching this young group and seeing them practising the language outside the French classroom. I always see them looking forward to French lessons.

Years 1 and 2 have had a good experience of learning the language, using different methods including worksheets, flash cards, online songs, and stories.

Years 3 and 4 also improved their knowledge of the French language. They enjoyed activities, songs and games and had termly assessments during the year to see how they are progressing.

Years 5 and 6 had a wonderful time during their French market. This was a very good opportunity to practice their speaking and reading skills in the French classroom. They managed to buy and sell authentic French food with their peers, using French paper money for practice. I was very proud to see them practising the language in an appropriate way and gaining knowledge which will give them a great start to studying the language in the Senior School.

Enrichment The Enrichment programme we offer at Sherborne Qatar Prep School is a central element of the school’s mission to offer an outstanding British style education in the Middle East. We believe that encouraging pupils to engage beyond the curriculum, in a broad range of activities, is key to inculcating them with our school values.

Following the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions we have had an outstanding year of Enrichment with more than 50 clubs running each term for pupils in Reception to Year 6. More than 460 pupils signed up for clubs each term this academic year.

We made sure there was a balance of academic and non-academic clubs taking place for pupils throughout the school. Academic clubs such as Spelling Bee, Problem Solving, Maths and English support clubs were popular options for pupils. In our language and Arabic clubs, pupils had the opportunity to improve their French and Arabic speaking and writing with Mrs Sulaiman and Miss Saada.

Sporting clubs were very popular with Pre Prep pupils having the opportunity to improve their speed, agility & quickness in Multi Sports Club as well as their ball skills in Basketball Club.

For the Prep pupils, with the FIFA World Cup 2022 taking place in Qatar, Football Club was very popular with many pupils participating each week on the Astro. Basketball, Swimming, Netball and Rugby were also offered to pupils to help improve their game play and subject knowledge on the sport.

External providers played a crucial role in our Enrichment programme this year.

We created a partnership with Education City Golf, offering pupils Grow the Game golf sessions at the state-of-the-art Centre of Excellence at Education City Golf Club. Martin Hunt Boxing Club gave pupils the opportunity to understand and learn the principles of boxing. We continued our partnership with Future Sports who offered Football and Basketball sessions throughout the year which the pupils really enjoyed. Molecular STEM enrichment clubs have given the pupils an opportunity to explore different topics such as forces and tension as well as mad science sessions where they were able to conduct different experiments.

Music It has been an exciting year for Music, Drama and Dance. This year we have also had the opportunity to perform and share our creativity.

Many of the pupils in both year groups have chosen to supplement their learning by working through the Recorder Karate scheme.

Pre-School and Reception were introduced to many instruments and we enjoyed listening to the different sounds. Learning about the materials of the instruments and how it feels was exciting. We also had our first soloists and the pupils loved learning the different songs and actions.

The Year 5 production gave our pupils an opportunity to be very creative. Our aim was to reach a high level of production through stage directions, expressions and costumes. Understanding the importance of a wired and wireless microphone, singing in unison and with the accompaniment was part of our learning journey.

The Year 1 production was a remarkable event in which pupils and staff took to the stage. It was lovely to see many creative teachers who also accompanied the pupils in singing and directing the production.

The lights, stage and sound facilitated bringing our production alive.

Year 6 continued to learn about the language of music in preparation for the Senior School and they led this year’s Remembrance Assembly and Commem.

Year 2 pupils continued to learn about the musical signs and symbols and were introduced to the Recorder in preparation for Year 3.

The pupils in Years 3 and 4 have focussed on learning to play the recorder this year. This was a new skill for almost all the Year 3 pupils and it has involved many techniques: breath control, careful finger placing, reading standard music notation and following a beat. Much of the Spring Term was spent learning the words and melodies for their show: The Glint of Gold and their hard work was rewarded by a fantastic performance which even included some 2-part singing.

The Year 4 pupils have extended their knowledge of recorder fingering to 4 notes and concentrated on improving the quality of the sound they produce. They were very proud to show what they have learnt over the last 2 years in an informal performance for their parents at the end of the Summer Term.

Many of our pupils continued to learn an instrument through our Yusheil (Ignite) music programme and were inspired by the mentoring and master workshops. Additionally, the very first Parents’ Music Workshop was held to guide the learning of instruments at home.

The Performing Arts programme grew further this year with the addition of Ballet, Musical Theatre, a Violin Trio and a Pupil and Staff choir. It was wonderful to see them all perform at the PTA Spring Fair.

We also reintroduced Sherborne’s Got Talent with a new format and we were mesmerised by the gifted and talented pupils we have.

PE & Games This year we have had a successful and varied curriculum of sport within PE and Games. The pupils have taken part in invasion games, striking and fielding, net and wall activities and athletics. The games approach has been popular amongst the pupils and allows them to develop their knowledge and understanding of teamwork and tactics within a range of sports. This has then been applied to many competitive and friendly matches against other schools and within lessons. The younger pupils within Sherborne have hadthe opportunity to develop their fundamental movement skills, such as throwing, catching jumping and running. They have started to apply these to team games. Key Stage 1 and EYFS were also privileged enough to take part in a school Sports Day, showing their parents all the skills and teamwork they have developed.

I feel there is a buzz around school for being active, taking part in extracurricular sporting activities and many pupils are excited and keen to be involved in representing the school at sports fixtures.

I am proud to be able to say that more than 80% of pupils from Years 3 – 6 have represented the school in a sporting activity this academic year.

QPPSSA We have definitely had a successful year within the QPPSSA tournaments. We have entered 34 teams into QPPSSA events and Sherborne Qatar pupils have taken home 110 medals. You can see below the events in which we have made the top three. Well done to all the pupils

As well as taking part in the QPPSSA tournaments, the PE Department has been dedicated to getting as many children as possible involved in sport. To do this we have set up and arranged many friendly matches against other local schools. We have come away from these matches winning and also losing, but we can be proud of the fact that we have been demonstrating the Sherborne values in every match we have played. The friendly matches have allowed 100% of pupils in Years 5 and 6 to have the opportunity to represent the school in sport.

Whole school sporting activities have also been offered for the pupils to take part in. These have been a great way to promote competitive sport and allow all children to be involved. This is a great steppingstone for the younger pupils in the school who will take part in QPPSSA as they move up the school. This year we have had the KS1 / EYFS Sports Day, Football World Cup Day, the Sherborne Fun Run, Bench Ball and more. These were a great success and the pupils very much enjoyed taking part in these activities.

Additionally, several pupils were selected to be player escorts for the 2022 FIFA Football World Cup. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity in which the pupils walked out onto the pitch with world class football players at the start of a match. These are moments I’m sure they will never forget.

This year has been an incredible one for Science. Our Science vision has come to life with all children engaging in hands-on experiments in Science lessons to witness Science in action. One of our highlights of the year was the highly successful STEAM week. We joined in activities such as rocket building and were treated to a special visit from Nutty Science, who demonstrated the creation of glow-in-the-dark slime.

Amna

It has been absolutely fantastic to have the House system up and running fully this year and it has made us all realise how much we missed it and how much it enriches the life of a pupil at Sherborne Qatar Prep. All the activities which take place during the year are designed to give every child the chance to participate and to find something they enjoy and 2022-23 has been a year packed full of such opportunities.

Our Interhouse programme is back and with a vengeance! More children than ever before have thrown, jumped, danced, performed, twisted, spelled, batted, cooked and kicked after school on Wednesdays and it has been lovely to welcome back some old favourites such as Benchball, Lego, Sherborne’s Got Talent and of course, Football!

House Days are a real feature at Sherborne and although they arose out of necessity when the school was split over 2 campuses for 18 months, they are now one of our strengths; giving children the opportunity to work in their Houses across year groups and to develop leadership and communication skills.

We started the year, as always, with Friendship Day. Friendship encompasses so many of the Sherborne Values and this House Day has become a firm favourite in the calendar. For this, the children worked in their ‘family’ groups which consist of at least one child from each year and, this year in particular after a nearly three year break, it gave the children the opportunity to get to know each other better. In a World Cup Year we did, of course, have to have a football themed House day and the atmosphere in school that day in November, rivalled that in one of the stadiums on a match day. The children were so excited as they arrived in their football kits and the excitement levels did not drop all day.

In the Spring Term we had our long anticipated International Day and it was so lovely to see all the children in their wonderfully colourful national dress. Book Day at the beginning of March and Coronation House Day in May were both full of exciting and interesting activities and gave more opportunities for dressing up, creativity and team building.

Our Prefects, Sid, Nawaal, Joe and Nour, have done a great job this year and we will miss their assistance and leadership next year but we know they will be going on to great things in their Senior Schools. Amna have not really featured in the House Merit competition this year, lingering around the middle of the table for most of the year but the children are all to be commended for their positive attitude and team spirit and we will aim to do better next year!

Irons

When I joined the Sherborne team in August 2020, in the midst of a global pandemic, I remember even then, how quickly I became aware of the significance of school’s House system. Staff, children and parents were so invested in their houses and I instantly knew what an integral part of our community it was.

Fast forward three years and after two years as Head of Irons House, it is wonderful to finally experience ‘house’ the way it is meant to be – together! This year, our Irons community has gone from strength to strength and due to our various House Days, Interhouse competitions, House meetings and assemblies; staff and children throughout the school have enjoyed reconnecting and making new friendships.

We have had so much fun in our many House Days (which included Friendship Day, World Cup House Day, International Day, World Book Day, and more). I think my personal favourite of this year has to be International Day – an opportunity to celebrate our diverse community here at Sherborne Qatar with not only the children and staff, but also our wonderful parents, many of whom joined us in our celebrations on the day. Oh, and all that delicious food (certainly another reason why it is one of my favourite House Days!).

Many children in Irons have amazed me this year with their dedication and commitment. Children from Years 1 to year 6 have participated in various Interhouse activities and competitions week upon week (including sports, maths, arts, and science activities), gaining merits for our House and keeping us in the running for an Irons win 2022/23!

I would also like to give a special mention to some incredible Year 6 children who have lead by example this year: our Prefects Archie Mills and Yousif Jabbar and our Head Prefect, Nawaal Latif. You uphold all the Sherborne Values and Dispositions and have set a very high standard for the future leaders of Irons. I am sure, with your kindness and leadership, you have inspired many younger Irons members to achieve their best. We all wish you lots of luck as you move onto your next, exciting chapter.

To the AMAZING Irons teachers who are always there to help, care for and support us every day - what would we do without you? So, from myself and the children in Irons House – THANK YOU SO MUCH! Finally, before I say goodbye, my most important message is for all the children in Irons. You are kind, respectful, creative and committed. Jassim

What an incredible year we have had in Jassim. Upon joining the Sherborne family I had always been told that the House System was ‘something else’ and the sense of community that it creates is wonderful. This year has certainly been more than I ever could have imagined and it has been a privilege to be a part of it! With the continued reduction in restrictions Interhouse competitions restarted, House Days were bigger and better than ever and the Sherborne community was truly reassembled.

Our Interhouse activities got off to a fantastic start with our first few events including bench ball, scavenger hunts, decorating our house logos and let’s not forget the Times Table Rock Stars competition. I don’t think I have ever seen anyone complete times tables as quickly as some of you! I have been absolutely amazed at the commitment and dedication that all the children from Year 1 to Year 6 have shown by turning up to these events each week and this has not faltered since the beginning of the year. The fun didn’t stop there however, as the search for the stars of tomorrow began in the Spring Term, in Sherborne’s Got Talent! I would like to take this opportunity to thank Mr Sarwar and the rest of our judging panel for their time and expertise during this event.

Our House Days have been full of fun and laughter throughout the year, allowing us to make many special memories, develop great friendships and celebrate our successes. There has definitely been something for everyone, from Friendship House Day to World Cup House Day, International House Day to World Book Day. There have been quizzes to make your brain ache, team building activities that get us tied up in knots and crafty activities to show our creative minds. It was great to hear everyone’s best bits during our House Assembly but one thing was clear, the International House Day was a resounding success…but I think that may have been something to do with the shared lunch!

Khalifa

As we come to the end of another successful year, Khalifa House has much to celebrate.

Despite the challenges brought about by COVID-19 over the past three years, we are proud to have returned to the amazing House system we have in place. This was most evident with consistent engagement with Interhouse events.

Throughout the year, Khalifa’s pupils have demonstrated great enthusiasm during House days and Interhouse. Their engagement has been a testament to the strong sense of community and teamwork that exists within Khalifa House. I am proud of all the pupils’ accomplishments and their ability to work together towards a common goal.

I would also like to extend a special thank you to our prefects, Amna Al Thani and Alya Ahmed.

Their independence, maturity, and leadership skills have been instrumental in ensuring the success of our House. Their commitment to serving our pupils and assisting staff promoted a positive culture within Khalifa House has not gone unnoticed.

As we reflect on the year, I am proud of what we have accomplished as a House. I am grateful for the support of House staff, parents, and pupils, who have worked hard to ensure that Khalifa continues to thrive. Powys

Wow! I could not be prouder of Powys this year. The attitude, commitment and dedication displayed by each and every member of Powys is second to none! We have fully embraced the return to normality and have seized every opportunity available, participating in exciting House days, Interhouse and Sports Day. This year, we have had the most amazing house days. Our first, Friendship Day, allowed us to get to know each other, to work as a team and to create some wonderful artwork. World Cup Day was a fantastic celebration for our teams. We learned about the countries being represented and the work that Qatar put into hosting the event. International Day was my personal favourite. The variety of cultures and traditions that we represent as a school is amazing and to bring them all together for the day was fantastic! The costumes on Book Day were creative and interesting – good work, Powys! We also celebrated the new King with our Coronation Day. Interhouse has also been a huge success this year. Thank you to everyone who has attended each week and supported Powys House. Junk Modelling, Times Tables Rock Stars, Just Dance and all our sports activities would not have been possible without you all. We have earned so many Merits for Powys and it has been amazing to see our name on the leader board so many times.

My highlight of the year was seeing your generosity with our Ramadan House Collection. You donated so many toothbrushes and toothpastes which were then passed on to those in need. You made a huge difference; I am so proud of you!

I would like to thank our incredible prefects. Jake, Salma and Rudrani, you have been wonderful role models, consistently displayed the Sherborne Values and made a real impact to our House. You should be proud of yourselves and your achievements and we will miss you next year.

To our departing Year 6 pupils, thank you for your efforts for Powys. I wish you the best of luck on the next step of your learning journey and wish you every success for the future. You will be missed.

Sheppard

I have the privilege of writing this year’s article on behalf of Sheppard House. The House schedule has allowed us to put the Covid-19 restrictions behind us and this year has been an overwhelming success! It has been great to be part of the journey back to normality, where pupils have been able to express themselves in a range of different activities and scenarios.

Pupils in Sheppard have taken part in a variety of activities within the fields of creative arts, sports, problem solving and mathematics, through the Interhouse programme. It has been amazing to see how many pupils from Sheppard have stayed after school to represent their house, demonstrating commitment and passion. A key theme of the Interhouse programme is enjoyment and this was clear every Wednesday, regardless of the activity. Pupils have represented Sheppard in a respectful, honest and kind manner throughout the year and during Interhouse competitions. I am very proud of how Sheppard pupils have transferred these values into their everyday learning.

The Sheppard prefects have shown their leadership qualities on numerous occasions throughout the year. They have been there to assist younger pupils during hectic house days and ensuring they understand what is being asked of them. The same can be said for the pupils in Years 5 and 6, who have acted in a kind and responsible manner during House Days, setting the standard for expectations extremely high. Consequently, a safe, stimulating and nurturing learning environment has been established within Sheppard, which would not have been possible without the support and dedication of the amazing Sheppard House staff!

House Days have been a time for celebration and enjoyment throughout the year. As a PE teacher, it is only natural my favourite House Day was the World Cup House Day! Pupils came to school representing a variety of different nations and there was a sea of colour on display. Activities within the classroom fostered pupils’ excitement weeks before the World Cup was due to begin. Pupils demonstrated perseverance, resilience and teamwork when playing competitive football matches.

Another fond memory I have from this year is International Day. This allowed pupils to gain a deeper understanding of different cultures and traditions from many different countries.

I would like to say a huge thank you to all parents for your involvement and efforts in helping children be prepared for all our different House Days and the amazing food provided for International Day. Pupils have always modelled the Sherborne values and I am very proud of the progress each pupil has made throughout their involvement in the hidden curriculum.

Junior Duke The academic year 2022 – 2023 is our second year of supporting pupils at the Prep School with their Junior Duke Awards. It also saw us extend the opportunity to all Key Stage 2 pupils, from Year 3 to Year 6. In total, 78 pupils signed up to the award and worked hard throughout the year, in their own time.

The Junior Duke provides pupils with the opportunity to cook, explore art, challenge themselves with a new sport, take on some domestic responsibilities at home, expand on an interest and develop their drama to name but a few skills. Year 3 pupils embarked on the Bronze Award, increasing in level each year through to Year 6 having the opportunity to achieve their Platinum Award before moving to Senior School and the opportunity to take on the full Duke of Edinburgh Award.

The Sherborne Qatar Lead Nurse, Rebecca Baron, supported the award participants with their First Aid Challenge. Mrs Baron provided lunch time and after school training for the Junior Dukes and covered skills including knowing what a first aid kit should contain, how to place a casualty in the recovery position, how to contact the emergency services, how to deal with a choking casualty and how to apply a sling. All participants had an excellent time and the photograph shows two Year 4 participants learning how to contact the emergency services.

PTA The Sherborne Qatar PTA plays a vital role in supporting the school and bringing together parents and teachers to create a strong sense of community.

The PTA’s fundraising efforts help to raise funds for projects and initiatives that benefit the children’s pastoral care and enhance their overall educational experience.

If you are interested in getting involved with the Sherborne Qatar PTA or helping at events, there are plenty of opportunities to do so. The PTA is always looking for volunteers, committee members, and ideas for new events, so please get in touch if you would like to be part of this fantastic group of people who are committed to making a difference in the lives of our children.

The Spring Fair organised by the PTA and a wonderful group of parent helpers was a huge success and brought all four of the Sherborne schools together for the first time in over three years. With over 2000 people through the door, the event provided an opportunity for families to come together and enjoy a range of activities, from bouncy castles and carnival games to sports activities and shopping at our craft area. Live entertainment was provided by our talented pupils and staff and everyone enjoyed the food at the various food stalls and especially the Great British Tea Shoppe.

As we move forward, the PTA is looking forward to organising more events and activities that will benefit the school and the community. Whether it’s a bake sale, second-hand uniform sale, Sports Day, or Spring / Winter Fair the PTA is always looking for new and innovative ways to engage parents and pupils and promote a sense of community spirit.

This year was dedicated to nation-building, the FIFA World Cup, the first ever in the Middle East region, and the year where the World defeated the catastrophic virus. It was the year we opened Sherborne Qatar Junior School at Bani Hajer and received enormous support from our parent community. Thank you for being part of this year.

This year’s academic calendar was unique. Accordingly, there were several challenges for us to hire and retain staff and manage building improvement expectations, yet the success of the FIFA World Cup and our pupils being part of a group escorting international teams to the grounds for the official matches was a must to watch. Our school premises continue to grow, and we worked the entire summer to ensure the Bani Hajer site was prepared to welcome over 100 pupils to start their educational journey with Sherborne Qatar. The response from the community was exceptional, and we cherished some unforgettable moments with all our pupils and parents during this beautiful year.

We had to say goodbye to our beloved Headmasters of both the Prep School and Senior School, and the Girls’ School Headmistress moved to another central role; however, all their batons were passed to the safe hands of other well-experienced and robust Headteachers. We are confident their perseverance will take our schools to enormous heights.

It was nice to see how the Senior School expanded this year and became popular by introducing new subjects like Design Technology.

The success story of results continued, and our pupils achieved higher success. We maintained a safer environment for all our pupils and staff members, ensuring the educational provisions remained unaffected by the millions of visitors expected to visit the country this year for the big event.

The Prep School was redecorated with some buildings and classroom developments. The younger ones welcomed the new addition to the courtyard area and added a more protective and safer environment during break times. We went through our building fitness, and the team did an exemplary job protecting the teaching and continuation of work simultaneously. We wish to thank our parental community for their long-standing trust and faith in our team.

The Girls’ School continued their organic expansion, leading to one of the most successful all-girls British schools in the country. Despite a few challenges, we went to great lengths to ensure the success story of Girls’ School was not hindered and the pupils and parents felt energetic to attend the school every day. We started our swimming pool operation, again proving a big success amongst our pupils. We will continue to fight the challenges we face in terms of parking and will ensure the safety and security of younger ones and other pupils are not compromised.

We welcome the new Junior School at Bani Hajer to our family of schools. We welcomed some genius minds to this school and are confident that their journey with us will be full of motivation and pride. We furnished the entire school with lovely furniture and

resources and nice play areas, which we believe would keep our younger ones engaged and something to look forward to every day they wake up.

Next year, we are preparing ourselves to further expand all four schools with new pupils and teachers and introduce a very exciting new Special Educational Needs provision in the name of Qetaf at our Bani Hajer site, which will make Sherborne Qatar the only group of schools in the region with such holistic and inclusive approach to education, serving pupils with special needs under the prestigious Sherborne Qatar name.

This provision has already generated phenomenal interest, and we are confident that this will establish another milestone in our journey.
