OUR HISTORY SHERBORNE SCHOOL is an independent boys’ boarding school re-founded in 1550 under a royal charter granted by King Edward VI. It has grown into a modern school of nearly 600 pupils and about 100 teaching staff. Surrounded by the bustling market town, the school attracts pupils from across the world.Sherborne Preparatory School is an independent co-educational school for children aged 3-13 years.

The school has a long and distinguished history and an enviable academic reputation as a feeder to many of England’s leading independent schools. As of April 2021 Sherborne Preparatory School has been part of Sherborne School. Sherborne Qatar was founded in 2009 and is a joint venture between Sherborne

School and Sheikh Abdullah bin Ahmed Al Thani. Members of the Qatari royal family such as the Emir, HH Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, have attended.

Shirburnians follow a diverse range of careers at the highest levels and include diplomats, bishops, politicians, journalists, actors, poets and musicians.

Sherborne Qatar is a founding member of Qatar’s Ministry of Education & Further Education Outstanding Schools Initiative and is overseen by the Ministry’s Private Schools Office.

Sherborne Qatar is a self-financed, not-for-profit school with its own Board of Governors, of which Sherborne School has half of the appointed membership. Our ethos, brand and educational standards are overseen by and aligned to Sherborne School.

FROM THE PRINCIPAL I am delighted to welcome you to the 2022-2023 edition of the Qatar Shirburnian.

The pages that follow are a snapshot of the hard work taking place within our schools by both pupils and staff.

This year, the Sherborne Qatar family of schools continued its period of growth as we welcome the first cohort of pupils to the Junior School at the newly refurbished and former site of the Senior School, Bani Hajer. We welcome Mrs Mary RobertsonBarnett and her new team and look forward to reading about their first year.

In June, it was wonderful to see all schools were able to invite parents to attend their respective Commems. The events were a rich mix of celebration of achievement and pupils’ performances and were all extremely well attended by members of the Sherborne Qatar community. If you were not able to attend, please do take the opportunity to watch the highlights on our social media channels.

All that remains for me to do is to thank the pupils for all their hard work, to acknowledge the dedication of our support and teaching staff and to thank you, the parents, for your continued support.

FROM THE HEADMISTRESS As I sit down to write this article, I am filled with emotions of gratitude, nostalgia, and a tinge of sadness as I leave my current post as headmistress of Sherborne Qatar School for Girls. It has been an incredible journey spanning over the past three and a half years in which we have achieved so much.

When I first stepped into the role of headmistress in April 2000, I knew I was embarking on a significant responsibility; a unique chance to start a new Sherborne Qatar school for girls that focused on the very best principles of STEM Education. With 29 staff, excitement, determination and a shared vision, we embarked on a collective mission to provide not just education, but a holistic learning experience that nurtures character, curiosity, and compassion. I am delighted to say that the school has today grown to over 800 pupils. In January 2001 we opened the doors of our brand new school site in Al Ebb. The empty ‘shell’ allowed us to develop our school’s internal appearance and ethos in the way we thought best. The various sections of the school now present as vibrant, productive and inviting learning spaces.

We have achieved full Qatar National Schools Accreditation and our first cohort of Year 11 pupils have just sat their IGCSE examinations with Pearson Edexcel and Cambridge International Examination boards.

One of the most fulfilling aspects of my tenure has been witnessing the academic and personal growth of our pupils. From the curious Pre Schoolers to the confident Year 11s who are now ready to enter our Sixth Form provision. The progress our girls have made since the COVID pandemic has been phenomenal and it has been an absolute privilege to watch their evolution in our unique gender neutral environment. Each milestone they achieved, each obstacle they overcame, and every achievement they celebrated reinforced my belief in the power of education and the potential that lies within every individual.

Of course, no journey is without its challenges.

We faced many hurdles that tested our resilience and resolve. From adapting to the ever-changing landscape of education both during and after the Pandemic, to the changing face of education in the digital age, and navigating the complexities of student well-being. However, throughout we stood united, finding innovative solutions, and learning valuable lessons along the way. The challenges served as opportunities for growth, pushing everyone to become stronger and more adaptable.

Beyond the academics and challenges, it is the bonds forged within the school that I will hold closest to my heart. The camaraderie among the staff, the support of parents, and the enthusiasm of our pupils created an atmosphere that I will forever treasure. It is the collective efforts of this community that made every achievement sweeter and every hurdle surmountable.

As I step away from the role of headmistress and into a wider Sherborne Qatar Schools role, I am confident that the legacy we have built at SQSFG will endure.

The foundations of values, knowledge, and empathy that we have instilled in our younger pupils will serve as their compass as they navigate the complexities of the world. We have started building a culture of continuous learning and growth and this will hopefully ensure that the school eventually develops into a beacon of excellence in education for generations to come.

To the pupils, parents, management team, teachers, and support staff who have made this journey so remarkable, I extend my heartfelt gratitude. Thank you for your support, your dedication, and your belief in our shared mission. While my title may change within the Sherborne family of schools I can assure you that my commitment to the well-being and success of every individual within this community remains steadfast.

PRE PREP It has been a busy and productive year, with many exciting developments and achievements.

By starting STEM education early, our girls are better prepared for the challenges and opportunities of the future.

We are proud to share our progress of the year that has had a focus on STEM education, Talk for Write, Read Write Inc., and White Rose Maths. These have all had a significant impact on the learning and progress of our girls. We have seen remarkable growth and achievement in various areas, and we are thrilled with the results.

Encourages teamwork and collaboration: Many STEM activities involve working in teams, which helps our girls develop important social skills such as communication, cooperation, and empathy.

STEM education has helped our girls develop their critical thinking, problemsolving, and teamwork skills, which will serve them well in all aspects of their lives. Our girls have participated in various STEM activities and projects throughout the year, and we have seen tremendous growth and achievement in this area.

STEM education is incredibly important in our Pre-Prep department at Sherborne Qatar School for Girls, because it provides young children with the foundational knowledge and skills they need to succeed in our increasingly technology-driven world.

Here are a few reasons why at Sherborne Qatar School for Girls we value STEM Education:

At Sherborne Qatar School for Girls, it is critical to prepare our girls for the future and help them become well-rounded, competent individuals who can contribute positively to society. By introducing STEM concepts in Pre-Prep schools, our girls can develop a strong foundation that will serve them well throughout their academic and professional lives.

Talk for Write has been a key factor in helping our girls develop their writing skills. Through this programme, they have learned to structure their writing, use rich vocabulary, and express themselves clearly and creatively.

Read Write Inc. has been an essential part of our literacy program, helping our girls develop their phonics and reading skills. We have seen remarkable progress in this area, and we are confident that our girls will continue to excel in their reading and literacy development.

Builds critical thinking and problem-solving skills: our girls to think logically, analyse data, and solve problems. These skills are valuable not only in STEM fields but also in many other areas of life.

White Rose Maths has been instrumental in helping our girls develop their numeracy skills. Through this programme, our girls have learned to solve problems, use mathematical language, and apply mathematical concepts in real-life situations.

Fosters creativity and innovation: our girls are curious, ask questions, and explore new ideas. By engaging in hands-on activities and experiments, the girls learn to think creatively and come up with innovative solutions to problems.

Overall, I am thrilled with the progress and achievements of our girls this year, and we would like to thank you for your continued support and involvement in their education. We look forward to another productive year ahead and cannot wait to see the continued growth and success of our girls.

PRE SCHOOL Pre-School has had an incredible year. The growth of the children, both in terms of physical and emotional development, has been remarkable. The once shy and timid girls who joined our classrooms in September have flourished into confident and independent individuals. Their passion for learning has led them to take risks, develop friendships, and exchange ideas, making this year truly amazing.

This year we have learnt a wide range of topics starting with our nursery rhymes where we listened and sang a variety of songs and tried to find out who pushed Humpty Dumpty off the wall. We loved our animals topic and enjoyed retelling the story of ‘Brown Bear, Brown Bear’ and learning about different animals. We then looked at animals that live under the sea and tried to imagine what it would be like to live there. We also designed and created our own classroom aquariums after our exciting virtual visit to the Valencia aquarium. We learned all about plants and how they grow, which made us excited to grow our own plants: we continued our exploration with learning about caterpillars and their lifecycle. During our summer term we had the chance to listen to different versions of ‘Goldilocks and the Three Bears’ and the girls even designed and made their own chairs for Baby Bear to make him feel better. We also read ‘The Gingerbread Man’ and even made our own to eat. We ended our year looking at different modes of transport and going on adventures to different parts of the world. This led us to explore different cultures and customs, foods and animals. We have had the chance to take part and celebrate many special events including World Book Day, Pink and Gold Day, International Women’s Day, Qatar National Day, Garangao and a trip to Kidzania. It has been a very memorable year and the children have flourished on their journey to become happy and secure learners.

YEAR 1

RECEPTION It has been a fun and exciting year in Reception!

Throughout the year, we have embedded the 7 areas of learning through our stories and enquiry questions. At the start of the year, the excitement grew across Qatar for the upcoming FIFA World Cup. Across the Reception classes, the girls found out about the different stadiums and teams coming to play in the World Cup. They even took part in their very own World Cup Day at school, where the girls dressed up in their favourite team football kits and enjoyed a day of football-related games and matches.

The topic we enjoyed learning about the most was “Why do things change?”. We started off by reading the story “Little Cloud” and found out lots of facts about the different types of clouds we see in the sky. We sat in the playground and looked up to see if we could make out different objects and shapes formed in the clouds. We used our science skills to investigate how and why it rains and then carried out an experiment, using coloured water and shaving foam, in which we slowly dropped water onto the shaving foam cloud to see how much it would hold before ‘bursting’ and creating rain! It was so much fun, and the girls enjoyed using their STEM skills whilst doing this.

As part of our topic on changes, we went on our very first trip to a Microfarm in Education City, Hadiqaa. There we had the chance to explore the greenhouse full of different types of plants and minibeasts. We planted our very own seeds to grow and repotted a flower to take home. At Hadiqaa, we learnt how plants grow best and had a look through a microscope to see teeny tiny bugs that were sat on leaves.

Another topic we investigated was “Do all superheroes wear capes?”. We came across a crime scene from the story ‘Supertato’.

The girls used their phonics skills to write speech bubbles for the characters trapped by the Evil Pea and then used their technology skills to create a short video of their superhero vegetable speaking on Chatterpix. The girls were so amazed, they felt as though their super vegetables had really come to life.

We had our second trip to the Snow Dunes, in relation to our enquiry question “Why don’t Polar Bears live in Qatar?’. We discussed the cold environment that the Polar Bears live in and experiencing the cold snow in the Snow Dunes allowed the girls to encounter the difference between the weather in Qatar outside, and the cold inside the Dunes.

We are so proud of how hard the girls have worked this year.

They have truly demonstrated the school values throughout the year, particularly showing kindness, being respectful and showing resilience and persevering when faced with a challenge. They have blossomed into confident independent learners, ready for Year 1!

YEAR 1 What a fantastic year we had in Year 1, with the girls learning so much together and demonstrating remarkable skills such as determination and perseverance during their first full school year since the COVID pandemic.

The autumn term began with us researching “What makes Qatar special” and creating a Travel Guide video using the green screen to display special places around Qatar. They “visited” places like the desert, Quest, the Mall of Qatar and many more.

Our knowledge and confidence of using Talk for Writing increased throughout the year and we studied stories such as Farmer Duck and The Enormous Turnip. The girls used their creativity to innovate these stories as well as create beautiful story maps and actions to re-tell the stories.

We had many WOW moments throughout the year like using the Virtual reality room to look at different animals from around the world as well as witnessing different seasons evolve. The girls could not believe it when they received a postcard from Thuraya and Suhail, the pandas that were gifted to Qatar and came all the way from China!

After the winter break and the wonderful celebrations of the World Cup, we started our enquiry about, ‘What plants grow in Qatar?’. The girls explored different types of plants and vegetables that grow and looked deeper into the features of a plant and what important job each part of a plant has. The Girls had the opportunity to grow their own plant and followed one of our school values ‘Responsibility’, taking ownership and implementing all the things they learnt to help the plant grow. We completed a fair test investigation to find out what conditions a seed would best grow in. They discovered that their seeds were able to start growing in soil, in cotton wool, a dark cupboard and in the light.

Later in the year, we realised that we had a year group full of chefs as the girls wrote instructions and followed them to create their own delicious pumpkin soup.

It has been a wonderful year and we thoroughly enjoyed watching the girls making the most of the school facilities whilst growing in confidence and excelling, both socially and academically.

YEAR 2 Year 2 have had a wonderful school year and we are so proud of what has been achieved. Fun, hands-on learning has taken place both inside and outside the classrooms. The girls have shown kindness and respect to each other, and they have also demonstrated perseverance and determination in all areas of school life.

In Term 1, we started the year with our enquiry topic ‘Where in the World’. The girls learnt all about the continents and oceans of the world. We studied countries and their capital cities, learning about famous landmarks, including some in Doha. In the lead up to the World Cup, we studied poetry in English, and so we decided to plan and write rhyming poems all about Qatar. Before the holidays, the girls took part in a whole-school football tournament, showing off their amazing skills and having lots of fun!

Term 2 was filled with lots of exciting events, including class assemblies, a school trip and a visit from Paddington Bear! A parcel was delivered to school for Year 2, which contained photos, travel tickets and a passport belonging to Paddington. A letter inside explained that the girls were going to learn about the features of a Journey Story, and to help them do this they learnt the model text ‘A Bear’s Journey’ using a story map and actions. In our enquiry lessons, Year 2 designed and made hats for their teddy bears, thinking carefully about what materials would be best (waterproof and comfortable!). Linking in with maths, the girls had to measure their teddy bears’ heads and materials to make sure they would fit.

Later in Term 2, we had our school trip with Doha Bus. We went on a big double decker bus around Doha, stopping at various places including The Pearl, Katara and Sheraton Park for a picnic. And of course, Paddington Bear had to join us! Our school trip linked in with our geography unit, ‘Human and Physical Features’. Year 2 worked really hard in Term 2, especially when practicing for their class assemblies. They showed super teamwork and we loved performing for our families and friends.

In Term 3, we studied plants and what they need to stay healthy. Our topic ‘Plants’ linked with World Environment Day, for which some pupils made ecosystems in a jar to sell and raise money for charity. The girls also got to design and build their very own bug hotels as part of our enquiry topic ‘What can wriggle and crawl?’. In English, we used our Talk for Write actions to learn the model text ‘Little Red Riding Hood’. We then planned and wrote our very own ‘Warning Stories’.

It has been a pleasure to teach the girls this year, and we wish them all the best for Year 3. We are sure they will continue to grow and develop in all areas.

YEAR 3 Wow what an exciting year we have had, filled with friendships, fun, challenges and lots of enquiry-based learning.

We started Year 3 by forming lots of new friendships and had lots of fun getting to know our new class and class teachers. In English, the girls’ imaginations were bursting as they wrote exciting adventure stories about Flat Stanley escaping to Qatar. It was lovely reading how passionate the girls are about the country they live in. On Learning Outside the Classroom Day, the girls decorated plant pots and planted sunflower seeds, observing what conditions flowers need to grow and taking the responsibility to look after their flower each day.

We got our football jerseys on and were ready to score some goals in the lead up to the World Cup. The girls wowed us with their football skills and how they cheered for their team. The girls then put on their acting hats as they performed their class assemblies for the parents, focusing on our school value ‘Honesty’. The confidence and acting skills shining through at only Year 3 age. Our autumn term came to a wonderful end when we came into school in our national dresses and celebrated Qatar National Day with our, mums, grannies, aunties and friends.

Year 3 girls’ spring term was a fantastic and busy term, filled with opportunities for learning and growth. The children were able to develop many new skills, from researching skills to problem-solving skills. In English, the girls worked on their researching skills, where they focused on features of non-chronological reports. They were given the task to research and write about a famous female engineer. They were able to write lovely and informative non-chronological reports about their chosen female engineer while paying attention to the formatting and structure of the texts.

In maths, Year 3 focused on multiplication and division, frequently competing against each other on TT Rockstars to see which class had made the most progress. This competitive spirit helped keep the children motivated and enthusiastic about learning the concepts of multiplication and division.

Throughout the term, the girls also participated in lots of STEM learning.

One STEM project that the girls enjoyed was testing the force of magnets on different surfaces and comparing a range of magnetic and nonmagnetic materials. It was an incredible term filled with lots of learning and development of key skills.

We finished off the year with a bang. Summer term was full of even more fun and excitement for the girls. We enjoyed a blessed and peaceful Ramadan, which gave everyone a great opportunity to focus on one of our National Values, ‘Appreciation’. During this term, the girls also learned to write for lots of different purposes such as diary entries and instructional writing. The girls wrote instructions for making a jam sandwich but missed out some key information at first, which they found hilarious when we had to follow those instructions. The girls then learned to use important literary skills such as imperative verbs and bullet points to make their writing clearer. They improved every day. In maths they were just as brilliant, learning key skills to get them ready for Year 4. They learned how to multiply and divide in different ways, how to add and subtract fractions and also about shapes in the world around us. They had the opportunity to demonstrate their skills for their parents during a Stop and Learn morning and everyone could see just how hard they have been working. During this term, we also experienced historical events such as King Charles’ coronation. We had a delightful tea party, and the girls shared delicious treats with friends. House Day was a blast and the girls loved all the different activities and working with different year groups to succeed. This term, our school value was ‘Perseverance’ and the girls used that in abundance to show everyone how hard Sherborne Qatar girls work and that they never give up.

Overall, it has been an incredible year and we are so proud of how hard the girls have continued to work throughout. They have made us smile each and every day and we hope they continue to carry this positivity into Year 4. We wish you all the best!

COMPUTING What an amazing year we have had – every week our skills are improving, and we could not be prouder of the efforts the pupils put in.

Over the course of the year, we build on key knowledge and skills so all our pupils can: •

understand what algorithms are; how they are implemented as programs on digital devices; and that programs execute by following precise and unambiguous instructions,

•

create and debug simple programs,

•

use logical reasoning to predict the behaviour of simple programs,

•

use technology purposefully to create, organise, store, manipulate and retrieve digital content,

•

recognise common uses of information technology beyond school,

•

use technology safely and respectfully, keeping personal information private; identify where to go for help and support when they have concerns about content or contact on the internet or other online technologies.

Pupils then apply this knowledge and their skills to use technology to improve their learning in other subjects. Our current Year 2 girls are the first group to have had the complete curriculum, starting from Year 1 and their confidence and skills are very impressive – we cannot wait for next year.

JUNIORS This academic year has been a great success at Sherborne Qatar School for Girls. As Head of Juniors, I am proud to have seen our pupils flourish and make such impressive progress in their studies. It has also been great to see how our pupils have enjoyed taking part in the various activities we have offered. All Year 4 to Year 8 pupils have continued to make strong progress and have showed great enthusiasm for learning.

This was a year filled with new learning experiences, individual growth, and plenty of fun. We are grateful to all the pupils, families, and staff who contributed to make it so successful and memorable.

The move from a traditional primary school/secondary school model to include a junior section, which overlaps Key Stage 2 and Key Stage 3, has been a positive one. The formalisation of studies for girls in Year 7 and 8 has been a huge step forward in terms of supporting pupils to find their identity. This initiative has provided girls with the incentive to develop strong study habits and the necessary skills required to thrive in school. It has allowed them to understand the importance of taking their education seriously, while creating an environment for them to explore the world around them and discover who they are and the type of person they want to become. In addition, the formalisation of studies has given girls the opportunity to learn from each other, as well as from their teachers, and to strengthen social connections. The curriculum has been designed in a way that emphasises skills such as problem-solving, collaboration and teamwork, all of which support the development of pupils’ confidence and selfesteem. By having access to tailored resources and activities, all pupils have been given the capacity to become independent learners, and to grow into confident well-rounded individuals.

The STEM curriculum for girls in Year 4 to Year 8 provided an innovative approach to teaching science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Through engaging activities and lessons, pupils developed critical problem-solving skills, explored new technologies, gained a better understanding of STEM concepts, and experienced the power and practicality of these skills in the real world. Collaborative challenges and team-building exercises further bolstered pupils’ skillset and improved their selfconfidence. Pupils have had the opportunity to engage in hands-on experiments and

problem-solving activities, while also learning about the history and importance of STEM. Through this programme, STEM was made more accessible and empowering to girls, through a comprehensive and practical curriculum. Additionally, our girls have had the opportunity to explore career paths and related educational opportunities in STEM. We are also proud of our Accelerated Reading Programme, which has proved an effective way in helping our pupils to increase their reading capabilities and has been embedded across the junior section. Our pupils have responded well to the tailored guidance they have received, with notable improvements being made in their comprehension, knowledge and individual reading ages. The Accelerated Reading programme has become a cornerstone of the school’s literature programme, enabling the pupils to strengthen their skills and meet their reading targets.

In Key Stage 2, Talk for Writing has been a huge success in improving the writing proficiency of pupils. This multi-stage approach has allowed pupils to develop the necessary skills to become confident, independent writers. Through an engaging methodology of speaking, listening and writing exercises, children have been able to develop an understanding of language, text structure and grammar that enriches their narrative and creative writing skills. Teachers have witnessed remarkable achievements from the programme; with children in Year 4 to Year 6 learning to write with greater fluency, accuracy, confidence and creativity.

Our innovative curriculums were a key feature of this academic year too. Learning is actively encouraged through topics such as creative writing and personal research, which promotes pupils’ independence and confidence. Placing a focus on creative thinking and problem solving, enabled pupils to prepare thoroughly for the next stage of their education and taught them the value of teamwork and collaboration.

I am confident in their readiness to tackle the challenges of each pupils’ next steps. This year will stay with us as a lasting reminder of the dedication of our girls and the joy of learning.

YEAR 4 Year 4 pupils have had an amazing year growing and learning together. Throughout the year, we have explored many topics through STEM based learning from baking Viking bread, to making fossils, to classifying minibeasts in the school garden and more. The weeks preceding the World Cup were also full of excitement, and fantastic, real-world, learning opportunities in all areas of the curriculum.

We have explored instructional writing in our trips to Carluccio’s where we followed recipes, explored natural dyes in workshops with Dadu Gardens and visited Quest, exploring forces. Year 4 girls also performed their class assemblies to an audience of mums, aunties and even big sisters. Our ‘WOW days’ for the Victorians and the Vikings, were highlights of our year.

Looking back at the progress the girls have made in English, reading and writing, science and maths, we hope that they are all truly proud of the how they have developed. From Qatar-wide times table competitions, to weekly top scorers on Myon and Century, it has been a pleasure to see the girls challenge themselves in their learning.

This year has also had so many opportunities for new friendships to grow as classes were changed and added to. These bonds were strengthened in our House Day activities and year group activities. We hope these friendships will be lifelong and that the girls will continue to encourage and support one another.

We hope that these new skills and life lessons will be applied as Year 4 take the next big step into Year 5. We wish the girls every success for their future, and we will miss them as they move on in their learning journey.

YEAR 5 Year 5 pupils at Sherborne Qatar School for Girls have had an absolutely fantastic year! The girls have experienced a wide range of enriching activities, educational trips, and engaging projects, making it a truly memorable time for all.

One of the highlights of the year was our thrilling visits to the Museum of Illusions and Quest. These trips provided our pupils with an opportunity to explore the fascinating world of illusions and puzzles, stimulating their curiosity and critical thinking skills. The girls thoroughly enjoyed these outings, which not only entertained them but also expanded their knowledge and understanding.

In addition to the exciting excursions, our Year 5 girls were actively involved in various STEM activities. They showcased their creativity and problem-solving abilities by building Solar Ovens, harnessing the power of the sun to cook food. Furthermore, they demonstrated their scientific knowledge by designing and creating new animals that could adapt to different habitats. These hands-on experiences allowed our pupils to apply their learning in practical and innovative ways.

The Year 5 girls have displayed outstanding participation across all subjects, demonstrating their enthusiasm and commitment to their studies. They have actively engaged in classroom discussions, demonstrated excellent teamwork, and shown a genuine thirst for knowledge. It is truly inspiring to witness their dedication to their education.

Our PE sessions have been filled with joy and energy as our pupils embraced sports teams and swimming. They have shown great enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and determination, making the most of every opportunity to develop their physical abilities and foster a sense of camaraderie within their peers.

One of the most memorable moments of the year was our year group assembly, where our girls had the pleasure of welcoming their mums to witness their incredible learning journey. It was a heartwarming event that allowed the girls to share their achievements, progress, and the incredible work they had accomplished. The pride and joy on both the pupils’ and mothers’ faces were truly priceless.

As we reflect upon the fantastic year that Year 5 has had, we would like to express our sincere appreciation to our supportive parents, and, most importantly, our wonderful pupils. Their hard work, passion for learning, and active involvement have made this year truly exceptional.

We look forward to seeing what the future holds for our Year 5 girls as they continue to excel academically, explore new horizons, and embrace the opportunities that lie ahead.

YEAR 6 Year 6 at Sherborne Qatar School for Girls has been a thrilling and actionpacked year filled with exciting STEM activities, memorable events, and valuable learning experiences. Our pupils have delved into the world of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, exploring their interests and expanding their horizons.

One of the highlights of the year was the Trashion Show, where our creative minds combined fashion with recycling. The pupils showcased their talent by designing and creating skirts using trash. It was a fantastic event that not only emphasised sustainability but also encouraged innovation and artistic expression.

In addition to the Trashion Show, our Year 6 pupils took on various engineering challenges. They enthusiastically built bridges, applying their problem-solving skills and knowledge of structural engineering. It was remarkable to witness their determination and teamwork as they designed and constructed bridges that could withstand loads.

The girls also showed their sporting spirit through activities such as making football tables to celebrate the FIFA Qatar World Cup 2022 and participating in basketball competitions. They honed their skills and demonstrated their passion for sports, fostering a healthy competitive environment within the school community. Sports Day was another thrilling event, where pupils showcased their athletic abilities and cheered for their fellow classmates, creating a vibrant and supportive atmosphere.

Apart from STEM and sports, Year 6 girls also engaged in other academic and creative endeavors. In English, they solved a captivating murder mystery, developing critical thinking and analytical skills while unraveling clues and piecing together the puzzle. They also had a fun and tasty experience making sandwiches following their friends’ instructions, enhancing their communication and collaboration skills.

Swimming lessons were an integral part of the curriculum, ensuring that the pupils developed essential water skills and stayed active. They demonstrated

perseverance and determination as they learned different swimming techniques and took on challenges in the pool.

The year would not have been complete without an unforgettable school trip, and this time we went on an exciting adventure to Quest. As a celebration of their exceptional learning, the girls experienced thrilling rides as well as an opportunity for them to step out of their comfort zones, fostering resilience and self-confidence.

Throughout the year, the pupils showcased their talents and creativity through class assemblies, where they delivered engaging presentations and performances on various topics. House Day activities added a sense of camaraderie and friendly competition among the different houses, promoting teamwork and school spirit.

Overall, Year 6 at Sherborne Qatar School for Girls has been an incredible journey filled with STEM adventures, sports competitions, creative pursuits, and unforgettable learning experiences. YEAR 7 Oh, what a magnificent year it has been for our incredible Year 7 pupils. As we bid farewell to this memorable chapter and reflect upon the incredible progress they have made, it is hard to contain our excitement and pride. This vibrant group of young girls has truly embarked on a joyous adventure, embracing the Sherborne Qatar values.

From the very beginning, it was clear that our Year 7 girls possessed an infectious spirit of laughter and joy. We embarked on a journey together and I watched as the girls have grown in leaps and bounds, impressing us all with their own unique abilities. Throughout the year the girls have engaged in thought-provoking discussions, sharing their unique perspectives and leaving us astounded by their critical analysis skills.

It was not just about the academic achievement. Our Year 7 pupils have blossomed in so many other ways. Each and every one of them has grown in confidence. Witnessing the girls’ growth and the sparkle in their eyes as they discovered their own voices has been an absolute delight. They have stepped out of their comfort zones and become involved in House Day activities, sporting days and competitions throughout the school including maths and Arabic.

YEAR 8 As we approach the conclusion of another eventful academic year, I wanted to take a moment to reflect upon the incredible journey we have shared in Year 8 at Sherborne Qatar School for Girls. Some highlights of the year include House Days, where pupils demonstrated their enthusiasm, camaraderie, and team spirit through a series of friendly competitions and activities. COMPUTING Another fantastic year of learning in computing this year. We continue to develop our knowledge and skills during our weekly lessons and apply these skills when using our devices in other lessons.

SENIORS It has certainly been a busy and rewarding year in the secondary section of the school as all staff and pupils became acquainted and developed their learning relationship. Our area of the school is growing in number and this year saw our first i/GCSE exams taking place. Each year we develop further and I am very proud of the pupils and the staff as we come to the conclusion of this school year.

Forming a community takes the time and efforts of all members of that community to succeed. The array of events which have taken place this year have been welcomed and embraced by all. We have seen various themed dress days, and several new events which will form the basis of annual and termly traditions in our community as it grows. These included the spectacular STEM fair and the fun-filled Literacy Week, the Performing Arts Showcase to name a few. All the events have been supported fully by our parents and many have raised considerable funds for varied charities.

A focus in our second year of operations as a secondary section of school has been on embedding an open and trusting relationships between the staff and pupils, where learning is seen as a journey embarked upon collaboratively in a safe and consistent learning environment. An extended PSHE programme and integrating pupils into the development process via the School Council and the Year 9 Peer Mentors have enabled us to ensure that all our girls have someone to consult when they face challenges throughout their school life.

STEM is an integral part of the curriculum, and the pupils are embarking on enquiry projects to explore creative and innovative ways to interpret their learning. Events throughout the year and our carefully crafted curriculum, allow our girls to become confident, innovative, leaders.

We look forward to opening our doors to even more new pupils in August and continuing to watch our pupils grow and thrive and of course, to receive those important first results!

YEAR 9 Year 9 have had a busy academic year and enjoyed a range of activities throughout the year. In Term 1 the girls focused on Qatari values and how they relate to school life. They explored the importance of healthy eating and how nutrition affects our performance in school.

In Term 2 pupils worked together in their forms and explored building healthy friendships, how to create a positive atmosphere in school and engaged in self-reflection. Term 2 was an exciting time as the girls also had the opportunity to choose their IGCSE subjects for next academic year. Many pupils eagerly attended our options evening to explore which subjects would support their future career aspirations and talents.

In Term 3 the girls completed their final Key Stage 3 studies ahead of transitioning into Key Stage 4. The girls worked exceptionally hard to revise ahead of their end of year exams and I hope they all receive the grades that they desire.

In the final weeks of term, pupils worked collaboratively on an inquiry based project researching different decades throughout history to uncover major historical events, trends, political movements and popular culture.

We are very proud the achievements of our Year 9 pupils this year and wish them luck for next academic year.

YEAR 10 As the school year ends, it is a pleasure to reflect on the positive pastoral progress made by our Year 10 pupils. Throughout the year, they have shown great dedication and commitment to their studies, as well as their strong commitment to fundraising initiatives, collaborating with their peers and teachers to raise money for various charities and causes. Their fundraising efforts have been impressive, reflecting their generosity and compassion for others.

From sports teams to music groups, drama clubs to debate teams, Year 10 pupils have shown a keen interest in pursuing their passions and developing new skills. Their participation in these activities has not only allowed them to develop their abilities but has also fostered a sense of teamwork, leadership, and collaboration. Moreover, Year 10 girls’ involvement in extra-curricular activities has provided them with opportunities to form strong relationships with their peers and teachers, contributing to a positive and inclusive school culture.

Furthermore, they have exhibited effective communication and people skills during their work experience. They have effectively interacted with colleagues, clients, and customers, demonstrating the importance of effective communication in a professional setting. These experiences have enabled them to refine their communication skills, both verbal and written, which are essential in any workplace.

In summary, Year 10 girls’ participation in the classroom and ECAs are a testament to their enthusiasm for learning and their willingness to challenge themselves. YEAR 11 This year has been a very busy, exciting but also challenging year for both teachers and pupils in year 11. Pupils and teachers worked hard to prepare for the first ever cohort to sit the IGCSE exams in the Girls school. In term 1, we focused on study habits and overall wellbeing to ensure all pupils were equipped with skills to prepare for their mock exams in January.

They explored the impact of sleep and how to manage stress. As the world cup resulted in an extended winter break, pupils were encouraged to enjoy the unique experience whilst managing their time for revision in preparation for the mocks that would take place in January.

In term 2, the year 11 pupils sat the mock examination which served to not only prepare them for the summer exams but also to provide them with a realistic view of their strengths and weaknesses on topics they covered in lesson and revision techniques. Pupils used this opportunity to reflect and respond to feedback. This was a crucial term as pupils worked hard to fill in the gaps and develop their knowledge and learning to reach their aspirations.

Pupils also took part in our options evening where they discussed the AS subjects they aspire to study in year 12. The pupils explored what studying each subject entails and the possible career opportunities available should they choose to pursue this subject.

In the last and final term, the pupils sat their final IGCSE exams. While it was a very stressful period for all pupils, it was a pleasure to observe their resilience and hard work despite the challenges they faced. It was a very proud moment for all when they finished their first set of external examinations. Although the pupils only joined us in year 10, it was a pleasure to see how much they have developed over the last two academic years. We would like to wish them all the best in their results, and we look forward to welcoming them back in the next academic year.

ENGLISH It has been another busy and successful year in the English department as our teacher and pupil numbers have increased significantly since the opening of the secondary section last year.

Our annual World Book Day was a great success across the school; both pupils and staff alike impressed us all with their character costumes. Starbooks was opened in different locations around the school for our girls to use for quiet and comfortable reading nooks for the day. Winners of the various competitions that were held throughout Literacy Week were celebrated in our Thursday assembly, where the English team performed Little Red Riding Hood from Roald Dahl’s Revolting Rhymes to much amusement and delight from the pupils.

In Key Stage 3, we have explored a wide variety of genres and text types. Our pupils have brought the curriculum to life with drama performances, speeches and presentations to demonstrate their understanding of characters, themes and historical context. The girls’ year group Shakespeare performances showcased their creativity, perseverance and teamwork skills, impressing all the audiences with their talents.

In Key Stage 4, we have seen some impressive pieces of creative writing produced as well as learning to critically analyse literature. Our older pupils have maintained a keen focus on commenting on the style and language of texts and have delivered oral presentations with maturity, fluency and conviction.

In the upper end of the school, our first cohort of Year 11 pupils sat their iGCSE examinations in iGCSE English Literature and a choice of either iGCSE English Language or iGCSE English Second Language.

Our Year 10 cohort also sat the iGCSE English Second Language examinations. We eagerly await all of the results in summer.

As the school further expands, the English team looks forward to welcoming even more pupils and teachers into the department as we open up our AS level courses within the Sixth Form curriculum.

MATHEMATICS This year at Sherborne Qatar School for Girls, the mathematics department has been growing from strength to strength in its second year as part of the secondary section of for our school. Our Mathematician of the Week awards have continued this year, which has encouraged the girls to go above and beyond to be awarded the winning title. We have had our first cohort of iGCSE pupils this year, who have shown passion, acumen and hard work throughout the year in the run up to their first external exams. We look forward to seeing some amazing results from our girls.

In the mathematics department we implemented a new online learning platform this year called Century Tech. This online resource is an excellent tool which is used for classwork, homework and independent study. It has been fantastic to see so many pupils demonstrating one of our key values, independence, and using Century Tech at home to improve their learning. Throughout the year we have awarded many certificates and stickers in maths to reward pupils for their efforts on the Century Tech platform.

In March, we celebrated Pi Day which is celebrated globally on 14th March and had a fun-filled day of House activities and our very first Pi Maths Challenge.

All pupils in Years 7 to 11 took part in the first round of the competition, where pupils competed in teams, completing maths activities and puzzles for a chance to secure a place in the Pi Maths Challenge Final. It was wonderful to see the girls engaged and having fun with maths as a whole year group. The top two teams from each year group took part in the Pi Maths Challenge final, which was an exciting event for all pupils, parents and teachers involved.

SCIENCE As we come to the end of the academic year, we reflect with immense pride on the achievements of our science department and the achievements of pupils in science. This year the department has grown significantly, and pupils learning was enriched with the arrival of Ms Yasmin Ali, Ms Ammarah Ali, Dr Victoria Taylor and Dr Julie Cocker. Throughout the year, the science department ran extracurricular activities which supported pupils academically in the form of homework club and iGCSE revision sessions which were regularly attended by pupils.

Furthermore, pupils from Year 1 to 9 were able to enjoy and complete various challenges during our STEM Innovation Day which involved designing a boat, parachute and getting a rocket to fly! There is no doubt that the department will continue to develop and go from strength to strength as it becomes at the forefront of STEM practice in school.

In lessons this year, pupils in Year 7 adjusted wonderfully to junior school and science lessons taking place in science laboratories. Pupils were able to learn the three sciences biology, chemistry and physics in great depth and breadth. It was a pleasure to see the pupils develop their knowledge and scientific skills as they were introduced to variety of different topics ranging from ‘Forces’, ‘Energy’ and space in ‘The Earth and beyond’ unit in physics. In biology, pupils were able to examine cells using microscopes and learn about plants, animals and the environment. Chemistry naturally excited the pupils as they learnt about acids and alkalis, where pupils were able to make their own pH indicator.

The Year 8 pupils excitedly started the year with biology, where they had the opportunity to dissect a heart. Pupils were able to develop their knowledge and understanding of the different systems such as circulatory, digestive, respiratory systems which are crucial in keeping animals alive. Pupils displayed high levels of maturity and engagement when learning about the reproductive system, where they were able to learn more about the menstrual cycle and development of embryo. In physics, pupils learnt more about the concepts of motion, sound and light. Their academic growth was nothing short of remarkable which was due to their resilience and hard work when learning complex and challenging topics.

In Key Stage 4, the Year 9 and 10 pupils started their international GCSE curriculum (iGCSE) for the first time. The Year 9 pupils were introduced to the three sciences simultaneously, each week before having the opportunity to select their iGCSE options. This enabled the pupils to make informed decisions about their selections and their future career aspirations. The Year 10 pupils were able to choose whether to study biology, chemistry and/or physics where they were able to develop their knowledge and understanding of key principles through theoretical and practical studies. Pupils were able to engage with the learning and appreciate the academic rigor of iGCSEs. This resulted in pupils developing invaluable skills which will prove useful in preparing for their external examinations.

Last but certainly not least, this year, the science department had their first cohort of pupils completing their iGCSE examinations for biology, chemistry and physics. The pupils have shown great passion, resilience and hard work as they navigated through academically rigorous subjects. We wish them all the best and look forward to seeing their results in the summer.

ART & DESIGN Throughout the year, the art department has witnessed a remarkable display of creativity and enthusiasm. As we approach the end of the summer term, we reflect on the wonderful accomplishments of our pupils and the impressive art they have produced.

We are thrilled to see the tremendous growth in their technical abilities, as well as their creativity and confidence in their work.

Our pupils have actively utilised STEM skills to explore various processes within their art lessons. They have developed their ability to approach challenges with creative and critical thinking, along with problem-solving skills. For example, Year 7 pupils had an enjoyable experience using microscopes from the science department to draw cells.

Meanwhile, Year 9 pupils experimented with manipulating their own photographs of the school by employing techniques such as creating prism-like mirrors to capture vortographs.

The first term was filled with excitement for the World Cup, generating a buzz of anticipation in the department. We organised an outdoor learning day, taking advantage of the weather and providing pupils with the opportunity to have their art lessons outside. In October, our pupils participated in a national art competition on the theme of “My Values Shape My Identity,” and we proudly celebrated our Year 8 pupil who secured second place. As the term drew to a close, pupils from Years 5 to 11 collaborated on four neurological art pieces to raise awareness about anti-bullying.

The remaining months of the year featured several engaging whole school events, where pupils gathered in the art department to create artwork. They demonstrated their STEM skills during the Creative Day, crafting geometric collages for their respective Houses and vibrant displays of balloons for Cancer Awareness Day. Additionally, our department took pride in having three finalists in the Education Above All charity’s Art4Good competition, with their work being displayed in a public exhibition.

Our pupils have shown tremendous dedication, acquiring art concepts, techniques, and drawing inspiration from various artists. As we look forward to the next year, we are excited to continue nurturing the skills and creativity of these budding artists.

They fearlessly delved into the world of history, adapting and progressing with boundless enthusiasm. Many of them were embarking on their first-ever exploration of this captivating subject, and oh, how they soared! Throughout the year, their development in key skills and critical analysis was nothing short of awe-inspiring. Despite facing numerous challenges along the way, these resilient young historians never ceased to exhibit excellence and triumph in their historical endeavors. What’s more, the skills they acquired have become powerful tools they can employ across various subjects, amplifying their academic talent.

Our delightful Year 7 girls embarked on a thrilling journey through a plethora of captivating topics, nurturing their deep thinking and creativity skills.

Just imagine the excitement as they reenacted thrilling parts of the Battle of Hastings, immersing themselves in the heart-pounding action. Their confidence soared as they fearlessly delivered mesmerising presentations, capturing the essence of the Medieval towns. Focusing on change and continuity, they embraced the opportunity to recall and retain knowledge, and my, how they blossomed and progressed. It has been an absolute joy to witness their incredible growth.

In Year 8, our fabulous young historians embraced the art of source analogy, using the power of sources to fortify their answers. With their insatiable curiosity, they ventured into various eras and explored some of history’s most challenging and thought-provoking topics. From the Industrial Revolution to Slavery, Women in History, and Medicine, these brilliant minds embarked on research tasks and presentations, honing their communication and presentation skills while acquiring vital independent research expertise. Their journey has been nothing short of extraordinary.

GEOGRAPHY; TRAVEL AND TOURISM This year has been hugely successful in the humanities department, and we are extremely proud of the progress our pupils have made.

It was a busy start to the year with the introduction of a new course to Sherborne Qatar School for Girls: Travel & Tourism. Year 9 have thoroughly enjoyed learning the key concepts of travel and tourism, along with tourism in the United Kingdom. They loved designing and promoting eco-resorts, and we have been blown away with their creativity. We are thrilled that pupils are enjoying this new course, and we are excited to begin the iGCSE with them after the summer.

Year 8 pupils began the year exploring the world’s population. They used their locational knowledge and research skills to delve into Japan’s ageing population. They developed new skills such as analysing population pyramids and linking this to different countries. Following on from this, Year 8 pupils explored the coast and river systems. They worked well in groups in a ‘Save the Coast’ decision making task to evaluate the best method of defense for an area of the UK that was undergoing erosion.

Year 9 have also mastered their mapping skills in preparation for iGCSE geography and have delved into the world of volcanoes and earthquakes.

We look forward to welcoming them as new Year 10 girls as they progress to iGCSE and expand their geographical skills and knowledge.

Our Year 10 iGCSE Travel & Tourism class has expanded to 22 pupils, and their progress has been admirable. They have studied two units already: key concepts of travel and tourism and global tourism. The pupils explored characteristics of travel, types of destinations and reasons for travel in the first unit before studying travel and tourism organisations, impacts of tourism and management in the second unit. The pupils have worked hard to consolidate their learning and to develop their skills, and we look forward to seeing their further development in Year 11.

Our Year 10 iGCSE geography class has been extremely busy studying a variety of human and physical topics. They began the year looking at population dynamics, theories of migration and settlement sites before moving on to physical topics such as rivers, coasts and natural hazards. The girls have viewed these topics as interdisciplinary and correlated skills across the two. We are looking forward to continuing their growth as geographers in Year 11.

In geography, our classes have worked wonderfully to master key geographical skills and delve into new areas of learning. Year 7 girls have mastered their mapping skills, explored global development, and studied the importance of Earth’s natural resources. Just one highlight of Year 7 has been creating treasure maps complete with map symbols and compasses.

In the Department of Arabic Language, the International Curriculum IGCSE is being taught to tenth and eleventh grade students during this year.

MODERN FOREIGN LANGUAGES As we come to the end of the academic year, it is time to reflect on an exciting and successful introduction to the Spanish language for our pupils at Sherborne Qatar School for Girls. This year marked the introduction of Spanish as a brand new subject for pupils across the Juniors and Seniors and throughout the year, our pupils have made remarkable progress in all four language skills: listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Let’s take a moment to celebrate their achievements and highlight what they have learned throughout the year.

Juniors: Years 4, 5 and 6

Seniors: Years 7-9

The girls began their Spanish journey by learning numbers and phonics.

They mastered counting from 1 to 20, recognising the pronunciation and written form of each number. Additionally, they focused on phonetic rules to correctly pronounce Spanish words. Through interactive games and activities, the girls developed their numerical and phonetic skills, building a strong foundation for future language learning.

At the beginning of the year, the girls started their Spanish language journey by learning greetings and basic conversational phrases.

They grasped the foundations of Spanish pronunciation, focusing on mastering the sounds and intonation patterns unique to the language.

Through engaging activities and interactive exercises, pupils quickly gained confidence in introducing themselves and engaging in simple conversations.

As the pupils progressed, they delved into learning the days of the week and the months of the year as well as colours, greetings and basic grammar.

Term 3 was exciting as the girls were introduced to the works of the famous Spanish artist, Pablo Picasso. They explored his unique style, famous artworks, as well as enhancing their vocabulary and linguistic knowledge through physical description.

Throughout the year, the girls made outstanding progress in all four language skills. In listening activities, they honed their ability to understand spoken Spanish, identifying key words and phrases. Through speaking exercises, they gained confidence in expressing themselves in Spanish, engaging in conversations and presentations. In reading, they tackled ageappropriate texts, developing their comprehension skills and expanding their vocabulary. Finally, in writing tasks, they practiced constructing sentences, showcasing their growing proficiency in Spanish.

PERFORMING ARTS It has been a very exciting time in music this year mainly due to the fact that we were finally able to make use of all the fantastic resources that we have on offer, including our keyboard room and wide range of musical instruments.

Many of the classes have been learning to read music and apply this to playing an instrument such as the glockenspiel or recorder. As I write this, Year 3 and 4 girls are working particularly hard to perfect their ensemble pieces for Commem, which they are hoping will be a high point of the ceremony.

In Term 1, individual instrument lessons began and I was delighted to enroll over 30 pupils to our peripatetic programme which saw them learning the piano, flute, violin or developing their vocal performance. As we draw to the end of this academic year, I am extremely proud to say that we have just under 50 pupils from Pre-School to Year 11 now learning an instrument and have been able to start offering drum lessons. Additionally, even some staff members have begun learning too! Next year, I hope to see many more pupils taking up the fun challenge of learning an instrument.

PHYSICAL EDUCATION & ENRICHMENT The PE department began the year with baseline testing of all pupils in the school. Through this process we were able to identify potential athletic talent, evaluate health-related fitness levels, set goals and plan according to the pupils’ needs. This information was also used by the girls themselves to understand their own performance and make decisions about how they would like to improve their own health and fitness.

As part of the curriculum, pupils at Sherborne Qatar School for Girls experienced a range of physical activities to both explore their talents and preferences, whilst also finding ways to develop personal fitness in a manner that they enjoy. Over the year, girls have participated in football, basketball, athletics, swimming, unihoc, rounders, badminton, volleyball, ‘just dance’, dodgeball and playground games. They even explored the benefits of ‘walk and talk’ activities and the contribution this can make to physical and mental wellness.

The start of the year was a bit of challenge for many of the pupils… following the pandemic, many young people across the world now have reduced fitness levels and also lower motivation to be active. Our girls showed great determination and a real willingness to trust and try. The results have been excellent; we now have a busy PE department with pupils working hard in lessons and engaging well in sports clubs.

Through the different sport and fitness activities available, young leaders are emerging. This is demonstrated through the girls’ willingness to take on leadership roles, for example, in lessons, many girls are able to help select and set up activities, lead a warmup, organise and referee games, and in some cases, have even taken the lead to set up and run a sports club for their peers.

This year, SQSFG signed a memorandum of cooperation with Qatar Basketball Federation (QBF). This agreement will see national team training for girls taking place regularly at our school and the development of a private schools’ league for girls’ basketball. Already, over 30 Sherborne Qatar pupils have been selected to train with QBF and will have a real shot at making the national team. The PE department also has a provisional agreement with Qatar Shooting and Archery Association (QSAA), which in the future, will hopefully see a similar cooperation for shooting as we now have for basketball. Again, a large number of our girls have been selected for training with QSAA and we look forward to seeing them progress through our sporting and community links.

This year, the PE department took the lead on a number of whole-school events. These included ‘The Real World Cup’, Sports Day and ‘Dance Lab’ for the Interhouse Day in May. The Real World Cup During ‘The Real World Cup’, pupils took part in a two-week long football tournament where they participated in football games with their housemates.

It was a wonderful opportunity to share in the vibrant atmosphere that prevailed throughout the whole country in the weeks leading up to FIFA 2022. The official World Cup anthems rang out from the playing field, the girls cheered and supported their peers, and both pupils and teachers celebrated successes on the field, alongside the accomplishments of the country in what will prove to be a monumental achievement in sporting history.

Sports Day For Sports Day, the girls at Sherborne Qatar School for Girls competed in a range of traditional athletics events, as well as several physical challenges and fun activities. In the outdoor athletics events, we had the 60m sprint, hurdles challenge, shot put, javelin, sack race, bat and ball balance and target throw, followed by team events such as the obstacle relay, baton relay and tug-of-war. Indoors, there was a bike and trike challenge, balance beam, chest push, speed bounce, standing broad jump and the ‘Cross the River’ team game. The four days of physical activities culminated with the senior year groups participating in a whole-school ‘just dance’ session in the sports hall.

House Day In May, we had our final House event for the year organised by the House Captains. The PE department arranged a day of physical challenges to music using the MS Kinect system. This allowed all pupils to work together to generate a participation/energy expenditure score, thereby enabling them to integrate physical activity, creativity and the use of technology in a fun event. It was also an opportunity for different year groups and teachers from different areas of the school to work together… a great way to promote connectedness within the whole school community.

Extracurricular activities are highly valued at Sherborne Qatar School for Girls. They contribute to the overall development and happiness of the girls and are important to achieve greater connectedness within the whole school community. The clubs on offer this year have emphasised different elements of our pupils’ growth and learning and have been centered around one or more of seven themes. Each term, there are over sixty clubs available to the girls at SQSFG, meaning that there is something for everyone; all of our pupils from Pre-School to Year 11, have the chance to join clubs. Clubs have been themed around curriculum subjects, STEM, sport, art, environment, internationalism, communication and Qatari values. The activities on offer have helped contribute to the academic, physical, creative, social, spiritual and cultural development of our learners.

Another benefit of the enrichment provision has been the opportunity for vertical programmes that allow pupils from different year groups to work together. It has also allowed pupils to work with teachers from different sections of the school and indeed, for our teachers to work with colleagues that usually work in different areas. This has been particularly successful in the crochet club, gymnastics and ballet classes; gardening, basketball, netball, swimming, cooking, Model United Nations (MUN) and the Sherborne Qatar School for Girls’ Core Values Award clubs.

Such has been the enthusiasm for clubs that we have developed a scheme for pupils to create and manage their own. Under the supervision of a teacher, pupils have been able to develop leadership skills by planning and organising activities that they specifically desire . This year, girls from Year 7, Year 9 and Year 10 have been responsible for running clubs in padel, basketball and football. Both these and the teacher-led clubs have operated after school and during some break times. The varied selection of clubs, together with the full range of pupils from all year groups taking part, has helped to promote a positive atmosphere around the school and many smiling faces at the end of each day.

SCHOOL COUNCIL There are numerous exciting initiatives taking place in School Council to support pupil wellbeing, charitable causes, and global sustainability efforts. For instance, a poster competition was launched to promote drive-through safety awareness, highlighting the importance of road safety for both pedestrians and drivers. Additionally, a survey was conducted to gather pupil input on the types of food and drinks they would like to see in the school canteen. In order to support mental health and wellbeing, a “worry box” has been implemented in every classroom, providing a safe space for pupils to share their concerns and anxieties. Other noteworthy events include a Women in STEM event and an International Women’s Day fundraiser where recycled bracelets were sold to raise money for the United World Schools and Education Above All. In the spirit of Ramadan, pupils participated in a charity box event where food items were collected to support the less fortunate, resulting in the creation of 135 boxes. The latest fundraiser aims to promote environmental sustainability by creating ecosystem jars, with proceeds going towards the same charitable organisations. The School Council is committed to making a positive impact both locally and globally, fostering a culture of compassion, creativity, and social responsibility.

ADA LOVELACE DAY Every year we celebrate women in STEM in honour of this very special lady. This year included wonderful projects about inspirational women and fantastic inventions made by our inspirational women of the future.

WORLD CUP 2022 A key event in the history of Qatar and a fantastic opportunity for us to be active. The girls were amazing in our very own, SQSFG World Cup tournament.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY An important date in our calendar at SQSFG, a day to celebrate all women. This year the focus was on representation and presence online. We had our traditional dress up day and researched many amazing women.

LITERACY WEEK A celebration of reading and writing in school. We had fantastic experiences throughout the week, including PJ day, catch you reading and reading challenges.

OUTDOOR CLASSROOM DAY We have the opportunity, once a year, to focus our minds on learning outside the classroom doors. Maths in the courtyard, art in the play areas and much more. Teachers and pupils enjoy the freedom to explore.

RAMADAN The holy month is a time for us all to reflect and activities in school support this aim. Jalabiya Day and Garangao.

RAMADAN COLLECTION During the month of Ramadan, the pupils were asked to decorate a box and donate one food item to our Ramadan collection. We received some amazing, decorated boxes and some pupils even placed kind notes and letters in the boxes which I am sure were appreciated by the local workers who received the boxes. Using all the donations, we managed to make up over 150 boxes to distribute in the community and it was wonderful to see the whole school involved in this worthwhile event.

STEM SHOWCASE This week is an opportunity to show all things STEM. Every year group demonstrates something they have been focusing on and we come together as a school.

EXPERIENCE AL JAZEERA TRIP - NON-NATIVE ARABIC Our non-native cohort were accompanied by Miss Basma and Miss Mariam in their visit to the “Experience Al Jazeera” exhibition at the Fire Station Museum, where they were introduced to a wide range of cross-curricular experiences ranging from the deconstruction of the original logo and the importance of calligraphy in Arabic to the evolving impact of media, tracing the growth of Al Jazeera from a single language channel to a global multi-platform network.

Linking to the Ministry of Education curriculum, the extent to which the network was targeted during the 2017 blockade.

Pupils explored the proactive roles played by leading women in Al Jazeera as well as the changes they spearheaded that stretch far beyond Qatar. They were fascinated by the differences between equipment that was used when the channel was first established and the ones used today. We looked carefully at Al Jazeera’s code of ethics and the importance of having a values-based vision and mission. Using the strap-lines for various programmes, pupils spoke about the importance of impartiality in the media and how this affects society at large by shaping popular opinion and avoiding bias and prejudices.

Another element that pupils found surprising was the level of danger involved in journalism and the threats faced by international correspondents in particular – they were very moved to read the stories of women and men who had been killed in the line of duty from Tariq Hassan to Shireen Abu Aqleh. They were fortunate enough to visit multiple galleries hosting diverse exhibitions curated by various resident artists and enjoyed exploring their respective styles and subject matter. This spoke directly to the work covered by the GCSE art pupils, exploring natural forms and developing ideas on structure texture.

The most popular activity by far was the time spent in a real-life studio setting where the girls were introduced to the work carried out by various people – director, camera person, presenter, editor etc. They then performed these roles themselves and were filmed doing so then were given a USB with their own footage to keep. They were astonished to discover that quite often a short clip of 1 or 2 minutes often requires over 5 hours of filming and editing to bring it to life!

PINK AND GOLD DAY On Thursday 2nd February, we participated in our yearly Pink and Gold Day to raise awareness of cancer in women and children. On the day, the girls came to school wearing pink and gold and made a donation to the Qatar Cancer Society.

We were delighted with the QAR 6,716 raised on the day and presented to the charity by members of our School Council.

During lessons, the teachers discussed the importance of raising awareness of cancer and the girls created a different piece of artwork to display around the school to promote and support such a commendable charity.

The House System is a fundamental part of school life at all Sherborne schools, giving the children opportunities to develop skills, talents and relationships in an engaging way, as well as building a sense of community throughout the year groups.

This year, the girls at SQSFG have taken part in several fantastic House events. We started the year with our “Anti-Bullying Week” House Day which gave the girls their first opportunity to mix with peers from their House, something which had been sadly unfeasible during the COVID19 pandemic. The girls showed their acting skills by completing role play in small groups as well as designing odd socks to raise awareness.

February was an exciting month as we were able to receive applications from and choose our House Leaders and Deputy Leaders. Many girls submitted great applications enabling us to create a fantastic leadership team. Following this, we celebrated Children’s Mental Health Week 2023 with this year’s theme of ‘let’s connect’. Each morning that week we had different outside activities before school for children, teachers and parents including “beat the keeper”, walk and talk and Zumba. Our House Day began with an engaging assembly full of movement challenges, then the girls took part in numerous activities to build rapport with peers and the morning culminated in the girls singing their brand-new House chants in assembly. We were amazed at how unique and creative each chant was!

Towards the end of the year, we celebrated our Creativity, Innovation and Maths Day. The girls took part in so many great activities including collaborative art, STEM challenges including designing floating boats and parachutes, movement activities, programming robots and creating Rube Goldberg Machines (which House can keep a ball in motion for the longest). Our House leadership team did an outstanding job of looking after their House and ensuring that the busy day ran smoothly.

We have had such fun this year. We cannot wait for next year and being able to develop the Houses system further to ensure many more engaging activities, team building and memorable opportunities for the girls.

This year was dedicated to nation-building, the FIFA World Cup, the first ever in the Middle East region, and the year where the World defeated the catastrophic virus. It was the year we opened Sherborne Qatar Junior School at Bani Hajer and received enormous support from our parent community.

Thank you for being part of this year.

This year’s academic calendar was unique. Accordingly, there were several challenges for us to hire and retain staff and manage building improvement expectations, yet the success of the FIFA World Cup and our pupils being part of a group escorting international teams to the grounds for the official matches was a must to watch. Our school premises continue to grow, and we worked the entire summer to ensure the Bani Hajer site was prepared to welcome over 100 pupils to start their educational journey with Sherborne Qatar. The response from the community was exceptional, and we cherished some unforgettable moments with all our pupils and parents during this beautiful year.

We had to say goodbye to our beloved Headmasters of both the Prep School and Senior School, and the Girls’ School Headmistress moved to another central role; however, all their batons were passed to the safe hands of other well-experienced and robust Headteachers. We are confident their perseverance will take our schools to enormous heights.

It was nice to see how the Senior School expanded this year and became popular by introducing new subjects like Design Technology. The success story of results continued, and our pupils achieved higher success. We maintained a safer environment for all our pupils and staff members, ensuring the educational provisions remained unaffected by the millions of visitors expected to visit the country this year for the big event.

The Prep School was redecorated with some buildings and classroom developments. The younger ones welcomed the new addition to the courtyard area and added a more protective and safer environment during break times. We went through our building fitness, and the team did an exemplary job protecting the teaching and continuation of work simultaneously. We wish to thank our parental community for their long-standing trust and faith in our team.

The Girls’ School continued their organic expansion, leading to one of the most successful all-girls British schools in the country. Despite a few challenges, we went to great lengths to ensure the success story of Girls’ School was not hindered and the pupils and parents felt energetic to attend the school every

day. We started our swimming pool operation, again proving a big success amongst our pupils. We will continue to fight the challenges we face in terms of parking and will ensure the safety and security of younger ones and other pupils are not compromised.

We welcome the new Junior School at Bani Hajer to our family of schools. We welcomed some genius minds to this school and are confident that their journey with us will be full of motivation and pride. We furnished the entire school with lovely furniture and resources and nice play areas, which we believe would keep our younger ones engaged and something to look forward to every day they wake up.

Next year, we are preparing ourselves to further expand all four schools with new pupils and teachers and introduce a very exciting new Special Educational Needs provision in the name of Qetaf at our Bani Hajer site, which will make Sherborne Qatar the only group of schools in the region with such holistic and inclusive approach to education, serving pupils with special needs under the prestigious Sherborne Qatar name.

This provision has already generated phenomenal interest, and we are confident that this will establish another milestone in our journey.
