Registration: ZR 1073
Extensively restored to a very high standard.
A familiar sight on Irish roads in the 1940s and ’50s, this 1949 Ford Anglia E494A was a firm family favourite in the post-war years. With its upright “sit-up-and-beg” styling, it reflects a time when reliability, economy, and simplicity were prized above all else. The Anglia became a trusted choice for school runs, Sunday drives, and everyday journeys — a symbol of newfound mobility in a recovering Ireland. Introduced just before the war and updated in 1948, the Anglia was the most affordable new car of its time, beloved for being easy to maintain and light on fuel. Registered ZR 1073, this well-preserved example retains its original character and period charm, recalling the days when cars were straightforward, mechanical, and full of personality. Today, these early Anglias are treasured for their nostalgic value and honest design — and this example is a wonderful tribute to mid-century Irish motoring life.

Completely restored by Croford, Coachbuilders to HM Charles III. From an Irish country estate
A charming and well-preserved wicker-bodied pony phaeton, circa 1910, traditionally used by a lady of the house for daily drives around the estate. Designed for lightness, elegance, and ease of handling, this four-wheeled carriage reflects the Edwardian fashion for personal mobility among women of the gentry, and was likely commissioned by or for use on a country estate in Ireland.
The phaeton’s open, basket-work body is woven in cane over a wooden frame and mounted on a sprung chassis with cut-under front axle, facilitating sharp turning for parkland or lane use. The forward seat, upholstered in deep-buttoned leather, is flanked by curved armrests and paired with a small rumble seat behind for a groom—an arrangement typical of the period and suited for outings where a servant was present but the lady took the reins herself.
Such carriages are described in Belle Beach’s 1903 Riding and Driving for Women as “”ideal for casual morning driving and errands,”” while carriage historian Tom Ryder notes that their low step-in height and light weight made them particularly popular on large estates for informal use. This phaeton retains many of its original features: the varnished wicker panels, painted undercarriage with coachlines, rubber-rimmed wheels, and iron fittings throughout. Its proportions suggest it was built for a single cob or large pony, ideal for personal use rather than formal occasions.
Wicker phaetons were often handmade in small numbers, with construction sometimes involving collaboration between carriage builders and furniture makers skilled in cane-work. They were favoured for summer driving and considered stylish yet practical. A similar example by Brewster & Co. is held in the Frick Collection, while a pony-sized wicker phaeton by Hume of Amesbury is displayed at the Shelburne Museum.
The present example, long retained in the coach house of a Leinster estate, shows evidence of careful use and historic maintenance. It would have served its owner not for grand arrivals but for the daily rhythm of estate life: visiting tenants, calling at the garden, or taking the air on quiet roads.
A well-balanced and evocative example of Edwardian-era private transport, combining function with charm, and reflecting the changing social mobility of its time.

Registration: JOH 184
First introduced in the immediate post-war years, the Jowett Javelin was something of a departure for the Bradford firm. Designed by Gerald Palmer, it featured a 1.5-litre flat-four engine, torsion-bar suspension and a monocoque body—an ambitious combination for a British saloon of the late 1940s. Its clean, aerodynamic lines, with curved windscreen and integrated wings, gave it a distinctly modern look, particularly when set against the more conservative designs of its contemporaries.
Registered in November 1948, this example, JOH 184 has a column-mounted gear selector and centrally positioned instrumentation. The car is offered with its original buff logbook and retains its period registration.
A Jowett Javelin of this type will be familiar to many from its appearance in the early series of Ballykissangel, where it served as Father Clifford’s mode of transport. The choice of car was deliberate— lending the character a quiet individuality while subtly anchoring the story in a version of rural Ireland untouched by haste. As Martin McLoone notes in Irish Film: The Emergence of a Contemporary Cinema, the show presented “a postmodern rurality,” where tradition and change were held in careful balance.
While there is no documented connection between JOH 184 and the screen-used car, this example stands as a representative of the type. It offers a tangible link to a distinctive chapter in British motoring, with the added resonance of cultural memory for those familiar with its presence on Irish television screens.

Retaining its original blue-green paint; two panelled cupboard doors to front; fold-out bed interior
A rare and characterful example of Irish rural furniture, this early 19th-century pine settle press reflects the ingenuity and resilience of vernacular design. Built to serve both as a cupboard and a bed, it combines practical utility with honest, timeworn beauty. The tall back and enclosed front conceal a fold-out sleeping platform, once used nightly in one-room cottages where furniture needed to earn its keep.
Beneath its surface lies a story of domestic rhythm — opened each night to reveal stored bed linen, then closed each morning to present as a tidy press and bench. Its original blue-green painted finish, now gently worn through generations of use, adds a layer of authenticity seldom found. The two front doors, simply panelled, still swing on early iron hinges, and the bench seat folds forward on hand-forged pins in the traditional manner.
Found most commonly in the northern and western counties, settle presses like this were central to hearth and home — a place to sit by the fire, store essentials, and offer guests a night’s rest. Few survive today in such untouched condition, making this a rare and evocative piece of Ireland’s material heritage.

BY JOHN MARSTON’S CARRIAGE WORKS LTD., BIRMINGHAM
Provenance: The Norman Brown Collection. With original folding hood, coach lamps, and painted monogram panel.
This rare and exceptionally well-preserved landau carriage was built circa 1908 by John Marston’s Carriage Works Ltd., a distinguished Birmingham coachbuilder known for its award-winning craftsmanship and bespoke vehicles. Based at 21–27 Bradford Street, the Marston firm was active from the mid-19th century through the early 20th, and by the Edwardian period had developed a reputation for producing refined town carriages, patent hansoms, hearses, and private landaus for a select clientele.
The landau was one of the most prestigious carriage types of the era—a full-bodied four-wheeled vehicle with a two-part folding roof and inward-facing seating, traditionally associated with formal arrivals and private travel. This example retains all the hallmarks of Marston’s late-period coachwork: finely lined panel paintwork in dark blue with vermilion detailing, original iron-rimmed wheels with wooden hubs, folding leather canopy, and monogrammed door panels—indicating commission for a specific family or estate. The interior is upholstered in leather.
Marston advertised its landaus in trade journals as early as 1887, and was still producing such carriages well into the first decade of the 20th century. A c.1900 advertisement noted a “fashionable landau… trimmed in morocco and cloth” available at their Bradford Street premises, affirming continued bespoke production even as the motorcar began to eclipse the horse-drawn vehicle. According to archival trade sources, Marston received over thirty awards for their innovations—including medals at the Adelaide Jubilee and Sydney Exhibitions of the 1880s—and by 1902 had reorganised as John Marston’s Carriage Works Ltd., continuing limited coachbuilding into the interwar years.
Academic studies of the British coachbuilding industry note that Marston’s landaus were made in small numbers and to high standards. A surviving example, nearly identical to the present lot, was offered at a UK auction in 2010 and noted for its royal blue paint and buttoned leather interior. Another landau attributed to Marston, complete with stamped coach lamps, resides in a private museum collection. According to Birmingham Carriage Works and Coachbuilders: 1840–1930, “Marston’s later landaus were as much a symbol of quiet affluence as they were practical transport—commissioned, not bought.”
This example comes from the dispersal of a private Irish museum devoted to transport and vernacular life. It is offered here with fine provenance, retaining original detailing and coachbuilder’s fittings, and stands as a rare surviving example of Birmingham’s once-renowned carriage trade.

OF FOUR SEQUENTIAL NARRATIVE WORKS: AU BEAU MOLLET, ROMÉO ET JULIETTE (X2), PARTIE DE
Series of Four Sequential Narrative Works: Au Beau Mollet, Roméo et Juliette (x2), Partie de Pêche
Ink and wash with hand-colouring on paper
Each series comprising six vignette panels
Mounted under glass in period oak frames with brass title plaques
Each frame approx. 25 x 65 cm
A cohesive suite of four humorous and satirical narrative compositions, finely executed in ink and wash with hand-applied colour. These works, rendered in a sequential, almost proto-cinematic style, illustrate moments of romance, misadventure, and gentle social parody from the late 19th-century French popular imagination.
Au Beau Mollet: A flirtatious farce between a military gentleman and a woman with a wind-blown parasol, this sequence wittily undermines appearances and expectations, ending in classic visual humour.
& 3. Roméo et Juliette (two distinct interpretations): Loosely referencing the Shakespearean tragedy, these variations reinterpret romantic folly in period dress with ironic detachment and physical comedy.
Partie de Pêche: A coastal comedy of errors, where a fishing expedition devolves into chaos — likely a parody of masculine pride and seafaring bravado.
Executed with deft linework and subtle washes, each vignette captures theatrical expression, exaggerated gesture, and costume detail. The works reflect the visual language of 19th-century French illustrated satire and feuilleton art.
The series is presented in original oak frames, each with gilt-lined mounts and brass plaques identifying the titles. As a complete group, they offer a rare and highly decorative insight into the storytelling techniques and humour of Belle Époque visual culture.

Arnold Wilhelm Möller (German, 1860–1944)
Autumn Ploughing
Oil on canvas, signed lower right
Presented in a period gilt frame with foliate crest and scroll moulding
Depicting a pair of horses labouring across freshly turned earth, Autumn Ploughing captures a moment of agricultural intensity beneath a pale, overcast sky. Möller’s brushwork is vigorous and expressive, particularly in the richly textured soil and atmospheric light that falls across the furrows. The composition emphasises the relationship between man, animal, and land — a recurring theme in Möller’s oeuvre.
Möller trained in the late 19th century and became known for his rural genre scenes, where working life and seasonal rhythms are observed with both realism and painterly lyricism. In this work, his palette of earthy reds, soft greys, and ochres evokes the fading light of late autumn, while the physicality of the horses is rendered with skill and immediacy.
The original giltwood frame, with acanthus and scroll embellishments, enhances the painting’s historic character and presence.

Unmarked, likely British manufacture
A striking example of 19th-century cycling innovation, this high-wheel bicycle — commonly known as a pennyfarthing — dates to circa 1880 and reflects the bold spirit of Victorian engineering. With its towering 52-inch front wheel and diminutive rear wheel, this machine speaks to a time when speed, spectacle, and stamina were the hallmarks of personal transport.
Constructed with a forged iron frame and wire-spoked wheels clad in solid rubber, this bicycle features a sprung leather saddle, wooden handle grips, and a spoon brake — all hallmarks of its era. Though unmarked, the design closely follows the Coventry tradition, echoing the work of Rudge, Humber, or other leading British makers of the day. The stepped mounting peg, mustache handlebars, and elegant backbone are classic traits of the high-wheeled “ordinary” bicycle — so-called to distinguish it from the later, safer machines that replaced it. For a brief and daring moment in the 1880s, these machines ruled the roads. They were expensive, physically demanding, and occasionally unforgiving. Riders were often seen coasting down hills with their legs thrown over the handlebars — a practical technique to avoid a headlong tumble, known then as “taking a header.” Despite the risks, the penny-farthing became a powerful symbol of modernity and freedom, championed by athletic gentlemen and cycling clubs across Britain and Ireland.
