ALOYSIUS O’KELLY RHA (1853 - 1936)

Title: A Brass Bazaar, Cairo

Medium: Watercolour

Signature: Signed and Titled Lower Right

Provenance: Private Collection

Framed

Aloysius O’Kelly was born in Dublin, and emigrated to London in 1861. Like his brothers, James, Charles and Stephen, they were all Fenians and artists. The brothers were trained by their uncle, John Lawlor, the well-known Irish sculptor in London.

Aloysius O’Kelly was a painter and activist in Ireland, Britain, France and America, as well as outposts of the empire, Sudan and Egypt. The world of Irish republican politics permeated his work. He was closest to James, who was instrumental in building up the Irish Republican Brotherhood in Britain and America, was active in the Land League, was elected Member of Parliament for North Roscommon in 1880, and was a key figure in securing Charles Stewart Parnell’s agreement for the New Departure.

Aloysius O’Kelly was prolific and eclectic: Realist in Ireland, Naturalist in France and Orientalist in North Africa, forging, all the time, new connections between art and anti-colonial politics. He studied at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris, and was one of the first Irish artists to go to Brittany. From France, he returned to Ireland in the early 1880s, as Special Artist to the Illustrated London News, giving visual expression to the harsh realities of Irish rural life. The Freeman’s Journal declared him ‘the most important of modern artists’; (2 June 1888). His Mass in a Connemara Cabin (1883, National Gallery of Ireland) had the distinction of being the first painting of an Irish subject ever exhibited in the Paris Salon.

In North Africa, O’Kelly painted many typical scenes, but tended to avoid the emblems of Orientalism, scenes that might justify colonial domination. In a dangerous adventure, he and his brother, James, followed their friend, Edmond O’Donovan, the Fenian and internationally renowned journalist, to Sudan in 1883/4, where they allied themselves with the forces of the Mahdi. Aloysius had extensive connections with the underground Egyptian nationalist movement which would have made him naturally hostile to the politics of Orientalism, although there are stylistic similarities. His Cairo paintings are sometimes meticulously detailed, sometimes loose and fluid, as we see here. O’Kelly was interested in modern, urban Cairo – as it was rather than as its colonial masters thought it should be.

Although today Humphreys is known as a resolutely abstract painter, some twenty years ago, as with this triptych, The Pagan, the Model and the Mask, his work was more figurative. Dating from 2001/02, the triptych, a combination of abstract background and three standing figures, contains elements both of autobiography and allegory. Each panel depicts a single figure, set against horizontal bands of pale umber, blue and brown. In the left panel, a figure holding brushes and palette can be read as representing the artist. In the centre, wearing a necklace of mackerel fish, stands a young woman wearing a crown of red leaves – perhaps a muse – while on the right is an enigmatic cloaked figure with a mask for a head. Although the woman is depicted in front of a low wall or ledge, the two other figures stand behind similar ledges. The allusion to altarpieces is inescapable, but

any attempt to read this work as a traditional religious image is negated by the title and the surreal imagery. Similarly, other works by Humphreys from this period, such as Trouble in Paradise, or Harlequin and Columbine, reference the history of art in Europe from Fragonard to Picasso, while also containing personal narratives that are at once enigmatic and allegorical.

Born in Hertfordshire in 1956, Ian Humphrey studied at Berkshire College of Art for two years, and then at Exeter College of Art, where he was awarded a BA (Hons) in Fine Art Painting in 1979. Since then he has been a full-time artist, exhibiting widely in Ireland and the UK, and further afield. Galleries that have shown his work include the Redfern, Hallward, Solomon, Eton Art Gallery and Beaux Arts in Bath. In 2014, Humphreys was invited to participate in the residency programme

at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation in Connecticut, and two years later he was artist in residence at Uilinn in Skibbereen. In 2017 he showed with the Doswell Gallery in Rosscarbery, and also at Liss Ard Estate near Skibbereen, while in 2022, a retrospective exhibition was held at the Kenmare Butter Market in Co. Kerry. The following year, Humphreys collaborated with sculptor Didier Leemans at the Galerie Stephanie Jaax in Brussels. His work can be found in major art collections, including AIB, Coopers & Lybrand (PwC), the Office of Public Works, Reading Museum, Société Générale, and Trinity College, Cambridge.

Louis le Brocquy (1916 - 2012) is widely regarded as one of the most important artists in Ireland to emerge during the twentieth century. His work is fundamental to any representative collection of Irish art, and features in significant institutional and national collections in Ireland as well as many private and public collections internationally. Examples of his work have featured in major travelling exhibitions of Irish art abroad. He was selected to represent Ireland at the Venice Biennale in 1956 where he was awarded the prestigious Premio Acquisito Internationale for his controversial painting A Family (1951); this iconic work is now in the collection of the National Gallery of Ireland.

Among the primary subjects addressed by Louis le Brocquy are his portrait heads of distinctive creative individuals, most of whom he had met or knew personally. The series followed on from the ‘Ancestral Head’ images that emerged from his visit to the anthropological museum, the Musée de l’Homme, in Paris in 1964. Inspired by the ritualistic heads he witnessed there, he was drawn to the idea of the generational links that reflect a connection from the past to the present. This series of works are not portraits as such, as they do not depict recognisable individuals. However, during the following years, the portrait heads of creative individuals developed and included groundbreaking exponents of cultural expression, like WB Yeats, James Joyce, and Samuel Beckett. Rather than producing a single, definitive representation of a subject, the artist preferred to create multiple images of each, on the basis that complex and multi-faceted individuals could not be conveyed adequately in a single portrayal. Le Brocquy’s portraits were generally painted in oils or in watercolour, and he is celebrated for his extensive productive explorations in these media.

Samuel Beckett (1906–89), the Nobel prize-winning writer, and artist Louis le Brocquy, knew each other. They collaborated on several projects, not least Beckett’s last published prose work, Stirrings Still.

A limited edition features illustrations by Louis le Brocquy, with a stylised image of the writer displayed on the cover. While Beckett, born in 1906, was ten years older than le Brocquy, there

were notable parallels in their respective lives and creative histories. Each of them had studied for a time at Trinity College Dublin, each had lived in France for many years, each was elected to Aosdána (founded in 1981 by the Arts Council of Ireland as a kind of academy of Irish artists), and each achieved the rare distinction of Saoí (‘wise one’) – an honour granted to only seven, at a time, of Aosdána members.

In 1989, an exhibition was held at the Picasso Museum in Antibes, south of France, of selected portrait paintings by Louis le Brocquy. The exhibition featured portraits in oils and watercolours, and included several images of Samuel Beckett who died in December of that year. While the current watercolour painting may not have been included in that show, it is nonetheless representative of the artist’s approach at that time. A broadcast interview, in French, with le Brocquy earlier that year shows the artist in his studio with a number of photographic images pinned to the walls, several of which were of Beckett. Commenting on his approach to painting portraits, the artist observed how, despite being famous, his subjects were also vulnerable and poignant. In the remarkable watercolour paintings, this sensitivity is conveyed through the delicacy of the medium, its translucence, and the way veils of thin colour are built to suggest the recognisable contours of the face. The frontality of the image suggests both confidence and sensitivity; it suggests consuming inner processes and the dynamics of creativity. The artist has described the head as “the mysterious box which contains the spirit: the outer reality of the invisible interior world of consciousness.” Most relevant to the current analysis, however, is the broadcast interview with Louis le Brocquy in 1989, where he commented on the particular relevance of the eyes as perhaps the main gateway to the spirit “ … that lurks behind the exterior view of the face.”

BARBARA WARREN RHA (1925 - 2017)

Title: The Artist’s Daughter (1982)

Medium: Oil on Board

Signature: Signed Lower Left

Provenance: Taylor Galleries, Dublin (Label Verso); Private Collection

Exhibited: Barbara Warren Solo Exhibition, Taylor Galleries, Dublin, 1982 Framed

Oil on board depicting the artist’s daughter Rachel, and probably set in Spain, this painting has a quiet meditative atmosphere. Rachel is depicted seated, her hands on her lap, on the ledge of a window or terrace. She is casually dressed in blue jeans and a jumper. Behind her a landscape is suggested by pale swirling forms of pale green and yellow. In the foreground, set an angle, is a white chair with a red cushion. A plant in a pot, and a rug are the only other objects depicted in this interior, the atmosphere of which is enhanced by the window forming a frame within a frame, with interior and exterior treated as one, and also by the minimalist depiction of Rachel’s features.

Born in 1925, Barbara Warren attended the National College of Art, before moving to London where she studied at the Regent Street Polytechnic. She continued her studies in Paris, at the atelier of Andre Lhôte. Since then, she has painted mainly in Dublin, the West of Ireland and in Spain. A teacher for many

years at NCAD, she is a regular exhibitor at the RHA, and has had many solo shows, including at the Taylor Galleries in Dublin. In 1999, Warren’s work was included in the Florence Biennale. A member of Aosdana, she has remained throughout her life a figurative artist, specialising in still-lifes, interior scenes and landscapes. However the apparent simplicity of her work belies the careful compositions, and avoidance of unnecessary detail. While Warren’s early paintings show the influence of studies in France, over the years she has evolved her own style, characterised by a sense of quiet and reflection. This is often enhanced by the inclusion of a figure – in this case her daughter Rachel.

Thorvald Hellesen (1888 - 1937) is known as a pioneer of cubism in Norway. Educated from the Norwegian Academy of Arts under Professor Christian Krohg, he left for Paris in 1912 and learned to know avantgarde artists like Albert Gleizes, František Kupka, Fernand Léger, Piet Mondrian and Theo van Doesburg. In 1921 Hellesen participated in (and partly curated) the exhibition “La Section d’or” – shown in Switzerland, Holland and Belgium.

In Paris Hellesen married French artist Hèlène Perdriat and they led a social life in their Passy villa, entertaining guests from the international art scene like members of the Ballet Suedois, Les Ballet Russes, renowned authors, actors and of course painters. New York art critic Henri Pierre Roche introduced Perdriats work to Marcel Duchamp and Katherine S. Dreier who bought work from her to her collection, now at Yale University.

Thorvald Hellesen and Hèlène Perdriat (1889-1969) were supported by Norwegian patrons of the arts

Medium: Gouache

Signature: Signed Lower Left and Inscribed Lower Left

Provenance: Galerie Carmine, 51 Rue de Seine, Paris (Label and Stamp Verso), Where Sold in 1927; Private Collection, Germany, Since the 1960s; Private Collection, Switzerland Framed

Alice Mary and Eivind Eckbo, who bought most of Hellesens production for their collection, as well as giving him large commissions – a complete internal decoration in cubist style of the maritime building in Oslo, completed in the years 1923 - 1925, and the exterior decorations of Eckbos property St. Annæ Passage in Copenhagen completed 1937, only months before Hellesens tragic death.

The watercolour/gouache presented here may have been executed around the time of the La Section d’Or exhibition as it has some features in common with “Composition” dated 1921, - currently on show at KMSKA in Antwerpen, Belgium – which may also explain the double signature.

Medium: Pen and Ink Wash

Provenance: Acquired from the artist’s wife, Juliette Roche, between 1956 and 1968 by a French Private Collector; Private Collection

Literature: Anne Varichon, Albert Gleizes catalog raisonne, Paris, 1998, Vol. II, reproduced on Pg 630 Framed

Albert Gleizes was one of the most influential figures in Cubism, who developed different theories and art styles on the movement, other than Pablo Picasso and Georges Braque in the early 20thCentury, and taught many international artists, who later became pioneers in the art world. Along with Jean Metzinger, another major artist in the movement, he wrote the first theoretical work on Cubism called ‘Du Cubisme’ in 1912. Born in Paris in 1881, he started painting at the age of 21, around 1901, while serving in the military. He was mainly interested in Cubism, but also was influenced by the Impressionist works of Camille Pissarro and Henri Matisse’s bold use of colour, which would be pivotal in his cubist works, which he started painting around 1909 for an exhibition at the Salon des Independants in 1910.

At the time this present work was completed, Gleizes was focusing more on his cubist compositions for numerous exhibitions, but from time to time, he would go back to his earlier style and complete a number of sketches, whether it be portrait or landscape and we can see the influence in the impression style from his earlier years and from Pissaro’s sketching style - the lines ink throughout the work portraying not just the

stooped hills in the background, but emphasising the movement of the wind and clouds. The sheep in the foreground catches the eye of the viewer and adds a sense of calmness to the work, but the main focus of this work is the Shepherd and his dog. The Shepherd looks directly at the viewer, as if to look through their soul to evoke a memory. Both standing proudly on a hilltop, Gleizes incorporates the dog into the Shepherd’s jacket to show that he is more than just a sheep dog, but a fellow companion and this adds emotion to the work.

Gleizes’ work as a teacher is often shadowed by Andre Lhote’s reputation as one as well. Lhote taught many artists, particularly Irish, such as Mainie Jellett, Evie Hone, Norah McGuinness and Mary Swanzy, but Jellett and Hone, who were lifelong friends and travelled together, were studying under him for ten months as they wished to explore different ways to portray cubism and so they went to Albert Gleizes in Paris and spent around ten years studying under him and working with him from 1923 to the early 30s, laying the foundations to their highly successful future careers.

KENNETH WEBB RWA FRSA RUA (B. 1927)

Title: River Run Poppies

Medium: Oil on Canvas

Signature: Signed Lower Left

Provenance: Private Collection Framed

A tremendous confidence and dramatic use of colour are key characteristics of Kenneth Webb’s paintings, which range from a Romanticism akin to that of Graham Sutherland to an almost Pop-Art sensibility. In this painting of white poppies, the flowers, bright dashes against a dark green background, appear almost to float away. Although a landscape, there is little sense of depth, and the sea and sky in the background are painted in flat, intense, tones of blue. From the outset, Webb has remained loyal to the art of landscape painting, and during a long career as an artist, has developed a technique that is distinguished by strong outlines and the use of pure, unmixed colour. There is an uncomplicated and joyful quality to his art; he relishes painting gardens, plants and the landscapes around Clifden, Connemara, where he has had a home and studio since the 1950’s. Poppies have been a constant theme in his work since the 1960’s.

Although born in London in 1927, Webb moved to Gloucestershire after his home was destroyed during an air raid in WWII. While attending Lydney Grammar School and the Lydney School of Art, he sketched landscapes in the Forest of Dean. Although awarded a scholarship to the Slade School of Art in 1945, he was called up for National Service in the Fleet Air Arm, and afterwards returned to Gloucestershire, where he obtained a

diploma at the College of Art. He exhibited at the Royal Academy for the first time in 1949, and four years later, after further studies at the University of Wales, was appointed Head of Painting at the Ulster College of Art. Not long afterwards, Webb moved to Ballywalter, where in 1957 he established an influential school of landscape painting; among his students were Cecil Maguire and Basil Blackshaw. In 1952 he and Joan Burch married, and two decades later, during the Troubles, they returned to Gloucestershire, but Webb also bought a cottage at Ballinaboy near Clifden, Co. Galway, where he painted landscapes and created a garden. Over the years he has received several major commissions, including, in 1959, for a large altarpiece for Bangor Abbey. Webb has had many successful solo shows, including at the Hendriks Gallery in Dublin in 1959. The first of many exhibitions at the Kenny Gallery in Galway was held in 1971, and he has also shown with the Gladwell and Patterson Gallery in London. A major exhibition of his paintings was held at the RDS in Dublin in 2018.

CECIL MAGUIRE RHA RUA

(1930 - 2020)

Title: At Claddagh Quay (1972)

Medium: Oil on Board

Signature: Signed and Dated

Lower Left; Titled Verso

Provenance: The Oriel Gallery, Dublin (Label Verso); Private Collection

Framed

An evocative oil on board by Cecil Maguire depicting moored fishing boats at Claddagh Quay, Galway. The artist’s confident brushwork and restrained palette capture the calm atmosphere of the harbour and the interplay of light on water. Signed lower left. Presented in a linen-lined frame.

Cecil Maguire was one of the most prominent Irish artists of the 20th and 21st century. He graduated from Queen’s University, Belfast, in 1951 and was taken under the wing of Maurice Canning Wilks, who took him on painting trips. He attended evening classes and joined the Lurgan Art Club afterwards, where he was from. He was also a teacher until 1990, when he decided to devote his life to painting.

Although Maguire was from Northern Ireland, his scenes of the West of Ireland, particularly Connemara, paved the way for his bright future. In the early 1960s, he focused mainly on mountain landscapes and Connemara itself, adapting the style of his teacher, Wilks. From the late 1960s onwards, he started painting the harbour in Roundstone, was exhibiting regularly with the RUA and RHA, and was awarded a number of medals, leading to his election as a member of the Royal Ulster Academy in 1974, where he was awarded the RUA Gold Medal and the Perpetual Medal in 1993. The 1970s and 1980s were particularly prominent

eras for him, becoming a full time member of the Royal Hibernian Academy in 1974 and exhibiting important works such as Corpus Christi, Roundstone in 1974 and creating some of his most well known paintings in 1982 - ‘Home to Inishmaan’ and 1983 - ‘Launching Currach, Inishmaan’, which was inspired by Paul Henry’s ‘Launching the Curragh’ from 1910 - 11.

In the current work, Maguire depicts a calm day at Claddagh Quay, Galway, with fishing boats at rest by the harbour. Across the water, we see mainly white houses, where he incorporates different colours for the doors to lighten the plainness and atmosphere of the background. He has an excellent understanding of light and shade, using the colours of the doors and houses on the right that creates light, which reflects off the water in an almost bouncing, lateral formation travelling towards the boats, creating drama. He also does this by portraying the shadow of the bold-green rope of the boat at the pier, against the bright Bluey - green water. His moody-toned palette of Bluey-greens in this particular work, emphasises both the coolness of the Bay and the clearness of the sky in a quiet setting in the west.
