GLANTELWE

‘A name from the Late Middle Ages, an Eighteenth Century Mill, and a Garden for Future Generations.’

The name Glantelwe comes from the Late Middle Ages and is an Anglicized form of Gleann Tulaigh (the glen of the hillocks). It first appears in the Red Book of Ossory where, in the 1460s, Bishop Clifford of Ossory is recorded as marking the bounds of his Durrow manor with named witnesses that were locally resident. Glantelwe extends along the north side of the river Erkina from the obelisk field - visible opposite Castle Durrow - through a series of hillocks that encompass the local GAA grounds and terminates at the confluence of the rivers Erkina and Nore located a few hundred metres east of the gardens. In the early eighteenth century it was Lord Castle Durrow’s racecourse from which usage the current townland name ‘Course’ is derived.

Decades of detrimental decline were halted with the restoration of the miller’s house and the grain store. Renowned landscape designer Arthur Shakleton was commissioned to create a new garden centred on the ruinous mill along the banks of the river Erkina. Arthur Shakleton’s impressive portfolio includes Fruitfield, Grange, and Capard House in County Laois, Butler House and Lacken Mill in Kilkenny City and internationally renowned gardens at Ashford Castle and Dromoland Castle. Some of his high profile clients include Andrew Lloyd Webber and Ryanair founder, the late Tony Ryan.

800 – 900 MONASTERY

Monastery or Nunnery: ruins located 300 metres north in Course Wood.

1460 – 1478 DAVID HACKETT

David Hackett, bishop of Ossory, fixes boundary of his manor at Durrow including Glantelwe.

1537 – 1547 DUKE OF ORMONDE

Ownership of Glantelwe alienated from the See of Ossory to Duke of Ormonde, Kilkenny Castle.

1660 – 1668 COUNTY KILKENNY

Manor of Durrow annexed from the Queen’s County to County Kilkenny.

1708 FLOWER FAMILY

(later Viscounts Ashbrook) William Flower of Castle Durrow purchases Glantelwe from the Duke of Ormonde.

1750s WILLIAM LAWERSON

William Lawerson of Castletown House, Durrow, leases mill at Glantelwe from Viscount Ashbrook.

1768 GEORGE BARTON

10 bay, 6 story, 2 water wheels, 5 sets of mill stones, Fourth largest mill in county (later Laois).

1798 WILLIAM DELANEY

Mill at Glantelwe acquired by William Delaney of Erkin Lodge, Durrow.

1855 MERCEIR FAMILY

Durrow merchants, Merceirs purchase and operate the mill.

1934 MILL CLOSES

Following purchase by Durrow Co-operative Society in 1927.

1994 MICHAEL SHEPPARD

Purchases the now ruinous mill. The miller’s house and the grain store are subsequently restored.

3. THE AUCTION:

(A) THE AUCTIONEER HAS ABSOLUTE DISCRETION TO DIVIDE ANY LOT, TO COMBINE ANY TWO OR MORE LOTS OR TO WITHDRAW ANY LOT OR LOTS FROM THE SALE, TO REFUSE BIDS, REGULAR BIDDING OR CANCEL THE SALE WITHOUT IN ANY CASE GIVING ANY REASON OR WITHOUT PREVIOUS NOTICE. IF WITHIN FOURTEEN DAYS AFTER THE SALE SHEPPARD’S HAVE RECEIVED FROM THE BUYER OF ANY LOT NOTICE IN WRITING THAT IN HIS VIEW THE LOT IS A DELIBERATE FORGERY AND WITHIN TWENTY-ONE DAYS AFTER SUCH NOTIFICATION THE BUYER RETURNS THE SAME TO SHEPPARD’S IN THE SAME CONDITION AS AT THE TIME OF SALE AND BY PRODUCING EVIDENCE, THE BURDEN OF PROOF TO BE UPON THE BUYER, SATISFIES SHEPPARD’S THAT CONSIDERED IN THE LIGHT OF THE ENTRY IN THE CATALOGUE THE LOT IS A DELIBERATE FORGERY THEN THE SALE OF THE LOT WILL BE RESCINDED AND THE PURCHASE PRICE OF THE SAME REFUNDED.

5. DEFAULT: SHEPPARD’S DISCLAIM RESPONSIBILITY FOR DEFAULT BY EITHER THE BUYER OR THE VENDOR BECAUSE THEY ACT AS AGENTS FOR THE VENDOR ONLY AND THEREFORE DO NOT PAY OUT TO THE VENDOR UNTIL PAYMENT IS RECEIVED FROM THE BUYER. INSTRUCTIONS GIVEN BY TELEPHONE ARE ACCEPTED AT THE SENDER’S RISK AND MUST BE CONFIRMED IN WRITING FORTHWITH.

6. IN THE EVENT OF A SALE BY PRIVATE TREATY BOTH THE VENDOR AND THE BUYER AGREE TO BE BOUND BY THE GENERAL AND ANY SPECIAL CONDITIONS OF SALE.

7. 10. REMOVAL OF GOODS.

(A) NO PURCHASE SHALL BE CLAIMED UNTIL IT HAS BEEN PAID FOR AND THE SALE HAS BEEN CONCLUDED. ALL PURCHASES SHALL BE PAID FOR AND REMOVED AT THE BUYER’S RISK AND EXPENSE, FAILING WHICH THE AUCTIONEER SHALL NOT BE RESPONSIBLE IF THE SAME ARE LOST, STOLEN, DAMAGED, OR DESTROYED AND ALL LOTS NOT SO REMOVED SHALL REMAIN AT THE RISK OF THE BUYER AND SUBJECT TO A MINIMUM WAREHOUSING CHARGE OF €5 PER ITEM PER DAY. IF THEY ARE NOT PAID FOR AND REMOVED WITHIN SEVEN DAYS OF THE SALE THE AUCTIONEER MAY RE-SELL THEM BY AUCTION OR PRIVATELY WITHOUT NOTICE TO THE BUYER.
