CARBON CARBON SEQUESTRATION This is a time when nations worldwide prioritize climate action, such as the example of the Paris Accord. Governments and corporations consistently seek novel ways to reduce atmospheric carbon emissions while encouraging economic growth.

However, amid the quest for novel solutions, we often discover that some of the most effective remedies lie within capabilities that have existed all along. Two fundamental natural systems, the oceans, and forests, have consistently played crucial roles in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions by reabsorbing carbon dioxide (CO2) and sequestering it from the atmosphere.

The largest carbon sequestration system is the Earth’s oceans, which are lled with tiny plant-like microorganisms known as phytoplankton. During their relatively brief lifetimes at the water's surface, they capture sunlight through photosynthesis, converting it into chemical energy, ef ciently absorbing carbon dioxide and releasing oxygen. Phytoplankton serve as the planet’s rapid responders to carbon uctuations and account for nearly half of the photosynthetic carbon capture worldwide.

The second largest carbon uptake comes from our forests, which also use photosynthesis to pull carbon dioxide out of the air, bind it up in sugar, and release oxygen. Forests account for an estimated 30% of biological carbon uptake worldwide.

Healthy forests also enhance biodiversity, minimize soil erosion, and afford economic opportunities for local and surrounding communities.

Our forests and the wood generated from them are arguably one of the most effective carbon sinks in the world, due to the long-term sequestration of carbon that can span for decades. Throughout a tree's life, it consistently pulls carbon from the air and stores it away. Eventually, carbon begins to be released back into the atmosphere after it matures.

Forest res, diseases, and human deforestation, contribute to early carbon release, but responsible forest management can avoid or minimize these risks.

A sustainable approach to forest management maximizes carbon sequestration time by increasing the forest’s overall value as a carbon sink. By instituting rotational harvesting, as the trees reach their apex of maturity, we are able to maximize the carbon storage while continuing the cycle inside products like plywood used in cabinets and other furniture.

With a focus on creating high-quality building materials, we can ensure that the carbon contained in these products is kept out of land lls and the atmosphere for decades.

Our journey toward a sustainable future requires a nuanced understanding of vital cycles. By recognizing and nurturing the distinctive strengths of our oceans and forests, while addressing their respective limitations, we can forge a cooperative and harmonious relationship between land and sea.

MANGOLE PROJECT The Mangole Project, situated on Pulau Mangole in East Maluku, Indonesia,

and initiated in 2020, represents a signi cant leap in the decorative hardwood plywood industry. With an investment of $120M USD, the project aims to establish a

state-of-the-art, 400,000-square-foot plywood factory, making it one of the worlds largest production facilities with a capacity of over 12,500 cubic meters or 250 containers per month. This collaborative effort between Shelter Forest International and Samko Trading PTE LTD is a pioneering step in Indonesia as the rst fully integrated plywood factory, combining plantation and production facilities.

Socio-Economic and Environmental Impact The Mangole Project is expected to bring considerable socio-economic bene ts to East Indonesia, including creating approximately 3,450 job opportunities. It will have a Mangole Island Plantations multiplier effect, propelled by 150,000 Acres of the harvest ready, 15+ Year Old Plantation of Jabon (Anthocephalus Cadamba) the development of local Pre-Certifed by PEFC infrastructure such as telecommunications, transportation, electricity, and clean water supply. Additionally, the project plans to enhance the living standards of the Pulau Mangole community by establishing educational and healthcare facilities.

AFRICA We invite you on a pioneering journey to Africa, as we set up the rst plywood group in Gabon, featuring the production of TigerPLY™ Marine Grade Plywood. This product originates from the well-managed African Okoume forests, which are celebrated for their world-class environmental policies and stewardship.

Our journey has led us through the introduction of this African-made TigerPLY™ Marine Grade Plywood to some of the world most recognized master craftsmen and artisans who demand an unprecedented level of quality.

Despite long, arduous treks through the Gabonese jungles, the daunting road systems, and lack of infrastructure in the interior, the mill we helped retro t in Makokou province got o to a swift start. As the mill’s location is adjacent to several concessions, SFI was certain that this close proximity would lend itself to utilizing the Okoume veneer prized throughout the world. Managing the jigsaw puzzle of logistics and raw materials to the mill was worth the e ort.

After several years of hard work, much of which was prolonged due to the pandemic, we are proud to o er our Lloyd’s Register Certi ed BS-1088 TigerPLY™ Marine Grade Plywood.

Our setup allows us the opportunity to manufacture high-end plywood at maximum efficiency, but we also prioritized making a positive impact on the local community. In cooperation with village elders, we built a plan that would assist the village’s population. Our development helps provide water and electricity to the village and employment for its residents and ongoing communication maintains the health of our relationship and the community.

Expanding Partnerships The StarPly Gabon partnership, formed in 2019, has obtained CARB/EPA documentation and is CE2+ and KOMO certified. We also have FSC and PEFC CoC certification available. StarPly now has exclusive distribution deals with some of the biggest names in Europe, the UK, South Africa and Israel. Our joint efforts of product development for the North American market affords an array of products, from industrial, lamination and jumbo panels to underlayment and specialized niche offerings. Without exception, this is the most state-of-the-art plywood manufacturing facility on the continent.

We are in the late stages of expanding production to focus on thin-panel production. The size and diameter of Okoume logs is ideal for thinner panels and we can confidently say they meet the most exacting industry standards. And with their singular composition characteristics—whole piece cores, uniform species—they will be unparalleled in the marketplace.

Environmental Stewardship, Sustainability & Forest Management Over the past several years, we have witnessed numerous infrastructure projects, continuous job creation, and further industrial developments in the forestry sector. These positive economic developments on the forestry front are occurring alongside parallel efforts of environmental and ecological conservation to ensure Gabon’s precious natural resource will be protected for generations to come.

Shelter Forest International (SFI) has worked diligently in conjunction with government authorities, NGOs, and responsible stakeholders to not only improve sustainability measures within Gabon, but also to boost the country’s global reputation.

Harvesting within the country’s concessions is a very comprehensive process. Concession holders must submit detailed 25-year forest management plans accompanied by five-year harvest plans. Each study must take into account the ecological impact of harvesting and entails a rigorous study of the villages, hunting areas, bodies of water, heritage and tribal sites and the buffer zones necessary to support them.

Most importantly, the required 25-year plan guarantees that there will always be more growth in Gabon’s forest than will ever be harvested.

This is one of the most productive and best managed forests we have seen in our travels.

SFI strives to operate under the ideal that sustainable forest management is both ethically responsible and a twenty-first century business imperative, and we are pleased that a growing percentage of our client base is engaging in these matters and pushing back against importers who may have questionable practices.

Gabon’s vibrant forests are being managed sustainably for future generations. Secondary wood-product manufacturing has positive socioeconomic impacts on it’s population.

Thermal Fused Melamine on Veneer Core Plywood (TFM)

Manufacturing Process

TFM involves fusing a melamine resin-impregnated paper onto a veneer core plywood substrate.

The process uses heat and pressure to melt the resin, bonding the paper to the plywood

HPL is produced by pressing layers of kraft paper, decorative paper, and a protective overlay under high pressure and temperature. This results in a very dense and durable laminate

PET laminates involve applying a thin lm of Polyethylene Terephthalate over the veneer core plywood. This can be done through various methods, including adhesion and thermoforming

Properties

TFM offers a uniform nish with good resistance to stains, scratches, and moisture.

However, it's not as durable as HPL in high-impact scenarios

HPL is known for its excellent durability, HPL is resistant to wear, impacts, heat, and chemicals. It's one of the most robust surfacing materials available

PET surfaces are known for their excellent clarity, gloss, and matte nish. They are scratch-resistant and easy to clean, but not as heat or impact-resistant as HPL

TigerFORM Shelter Forest International (SFI) specializes in the production of high-quality construction materials, including TigerForm Phenolic Film Plywood. These products are designed to provide durability, strength, and versatility for use in a variety of construction applications.

A major project in which SFI's TigerForm Phenolic Film Plywood was used in the one billon dollar Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA) project. The plywood was custom fabricated and pre-cut into 7' by 7' triangles, and it played a critical role in the construction of the new building.

The LACMA project involves the construction of a new building designed by Swiss architect Peter Zumthor. The building's design includes large, curving concrete walls that span Wilshire Boulevard, the major thoroughfare that runs past the museum. To create these walls, the construction team needed a high-quality plywood material that could be used as formwork to shape the concrete.

One of the challenges faced by the construction team was nding a plywood material that could withstand the pressures and stresses of the concrete casting process. The plywood needed to be strong enough to hold the weight of the wet concrete, while also being smooth and non-stick to ensure that the concrete would release easily once it had set. In addition, the plywood needed to be durable and reusable, as the construction team needed to create multiple identical panels.

SFI’s TigerForm Phenolic Film Plywood was the perfect solution for this project. The plywood is specially designed for use in concrete formwork and is coated with a lm of phenolic resin that provides additional strength, durability, and resistance to moisture and wear. The smooth, non-stick surface of the plywood ensured that the concrete would release easily, while the strong and
