Eco Focal - Fortlane 2020
The design installation Eco Focal transforms Fort Lane, an inner-city service lane in downtown Auckland, as a cinematic scene. Typically a cinematic scene is experienced visually but not haptically, this design intervention aims to achieve both, and in doing so creates an immersive embodied engagement for the viewer. The cinematic experience is refigured as a cinematic micro-climate environment drawing out the cinematic processes of lights, camera, and action. ‘Lights’ draws on the organic Voronoi pattern and casts light and shadow onto the laneway. ‘Camera’ is referenced as a series of apertures in the structure which enhance the cinematic techniques of focus and blur. ‘Action’ is a microclimatic sequence featuring a rain shower, wet ground, and surface reflection. The make-believe world of cinema achieved through visual effects is experienced in this work as a felt experience, while at the same time exposing the cinematic apparatus which is normally kept out of view
Eco Focal - Fortlane
My interest in viewing the capricious weather of Auckland from a different perspective led me to explore microclimates. Microclimates are local set atmospheres which differ from the reality of the surrounding atmosphere.
This proposed structure is a parametric shape known as Voronoi. It is a very organic pattern, also it can be seen in cells of leaves, dragonfly wings, and beehives, etc. The choice of this specific shape is because I required a structure that could remote water in various positions. The structure collects stormwater and then creates thin streams of showers which enhances the body of a raindrop. The multicolored feature that is installed in between the empty space of the
installation is a 3M Dichroic Blzae film on perspex. This feature has various sizes of void spaces in them. The dichroic help’s warp the surrounding with its distorted reflection and sets the focus on what’s in the center. This is where you can see the effect of focus and blur. This design aims to provide a new outlook on the constant change in the weather. Eco Focal displays a new way to experience rainy weather and gives a sense of intimacy between the people and the climate.

My responsibilities included designing and preparing the required building consent documentation for our clients, which was then submitted to the Auckland Council. These are a few drawings from the document, providing a glimpse into the design for this project.

Monocle ShiftSt James Theater 2019
This Project centers around the absence of dormancy in the hall space of the St James Theater..
The overarching goal of this plan is to create a progressively interactive space in relation to the theater. Drawing inspiration from two influential artists, Mark Rothko and Quentin Tarantino, this intervention incorporates suspended panels reminiscent of Rothko's artistic process. The varying levels of these panels enhance the sense of intimacy for individuals within the space. Following Rothko's color blending technique, the transition from red to yellow generates a spatial distinction between the two hues. Taking inspiration from Tarantino, the inclusion of lenses encourages individuals to express their own raw perspectives towards the stage. Additionally, as interactive lenses are utilized, the panels above facilitate the movement of light. Through the collaborative efforts of the panels and lenses, a highly interactive and immersive environment is achieved, fostering a deep connection between individuals and the St. James Theater.
