What’s an apprenticeship?

Apprenticeships are real jobs, typically structured with a four-day working week. You will spend one day a week studying at college to obtain the theory and skills needed for your career. An apprenticeship can take up to four years to complete depending on the subject area.

Why choose an apprenticeship?

You will earn a salary, gain valuable work experience and receive a technical qualification at the end of the programme. Further benefits include key transferable skills and functional skills in maths, English and ICT.

Who can apply?

Apprenticeship vacancies are open to anyone aged 16 and above. They’re available at different levels to match your experience and career goals.

How to apply

Once you have identified your desired apprenticeship programme, you will need to find and apply for suitable vacancies. The process of applying for an apprenticeship is similar to applying for a job and a standard expectation is a strong CV and cover letter.

I really wanted to start working in construction but it’s hard to get a job without the experience, and I knew that this apprenticeship would give me the training as well. I’ve been lucky to work under lots of people with great experience and have been on day-release for learning skills at college. It’s really good to have that extra team of people who have been doing the trade for a long time and they know what it’s like to start new themselves.

College Life

Life at South Hampshire College Group offers a comprehensive experience beyond traditional course-led education.

We recognise that your personal growth, enrichment, and holistic support are essential to a well-rounded educational journey. This approach ensures you leave us with academic knowledge plus the skills and resilience needed for future success.

From the moment you join us, our dedicated teams are committed to supporting you throughout your college journey. Our specialist staff are always on hand to guide and advise on various issues. Whether navigating coursework challenges, exploring career options, or seeking advice on personal wellbeing, our teams are here to help you every step of the way.

What to Expect

Our full-time courses are all about getting you ready for what comes next, whether that’s progressing straight into a job after college or opting for higher education and university.

With us, you’ll focus on one main subject to gain the skills you need for a career in that field, and you’ll be taught by industry expert lecturers who are experienced in the latest sector developments. Your study programme will also equip you with a wide range of transferable skills that will give you options if you ever want to change career direction in the future. You’ll further benefit from our superb facilities where you’ll learn in a real-life working environment, with a range of advanced state-of-the-art equipment, and you’ll have access to extensive support services throughout your time with us.

Course Structure

Classes

Classes will be divided over three to four days (in addition to any time needed for resitting English/maths), with an expectation that every student sets aside further time for home study, tutorials and assignments.

Main Subject Qualification

This is the main part of your course. You’ll focus on your chosen subject, learning the skills and knowledge that employers need from you. Your lecturers will be on hand to share their expertise with you, with plenty of opportunities for one-to-one support.

Work Placements

Most courses include a work placement that will help you experience your chosen industry. Depending on your course, you might do a one-week placement (37 hours) or a longer placement that amounts to 45 days + throughout the year.

English and Maths

If your GCSE grades are 4 or higher, you’ll continue to develop your English and maths skills alongside your main subject. If they’re below 4, you’ll need to retake GCSEs or do functional skills qualifications. These requirements will be automatically added to your timetable alongside your main subject.

Tutorial and Enrichment Programme

You’ll have regular tutorials to help you establish your next steps and realise your full potential. We’ll also be able to provide you with a broader perspective on life, society and culture as you prepare to take your first steps into the world of work.

What Our Students Say

It has been great to be able to focus on one subject and really put all my effort into something I was passionate about. I enjoyed the live assignments as they helped to put what I had learnt into practice and the work experience was really valuable as well. I feel very prepared for university and my future career.

Rin | Creative Media Production

I wouldn’t have got to where I am today without the support of my amazing lecturers at Eastleigh College. One day I hope to be able to open my own restaurant and I would like to welcome them all for a meal to thank them.

Great results mark the end of a happy two years at college. I have learned so much and feel prepared for my next steps. During the course, I completed a variety of work placements, my favourite being working alongside the Executive Team at Fareham College. I was trusted in this role to work on complex and challenging projects supporting the wider college.

Work Experience

All full‑time students are required to complete work experience alongside their studies. This is an important step to growth, industry experience and self‑discovery.

Work experience boosts your confidence, skills, and employability. It helps you learn, sample different career options and establish an industry network. With strong support from our dedicated team, you can find work placements that match your aspirations, and take the first step towards your future career.

The introduction of T Levels highlights the importance of work experience today. These courses incorporate 45 to 60 days of industry placement within a two-year course. This experience equips you with the skills employers need and gives you the chance to secure future job opportunities with your chosen employer through part-time or full-time roles and apprenticeships.

Our Work Experience team will guide you through your options, from deciding your path to securing your desired placement. This blend of practical experience, support, and professional networking prepares you for the world of work, marking the start of your career journey.

My work placement was really valuable. I got to work at Rhinefield House which was fantastic and a very different environment for me. The experience really helped my confidence and I was able to use and improve the skills I had learnt during my course.
