March 28-April 3, 2019 Kidney Awareness March is Kidney Health month in B.C. and this Saturday, March 30 there will be an information/donation table at AG Valley Foods. It will be manned by former dialysis patient, now transplant recipient, Kirt Sellers. As you may know, kidneys are dear to my heart, haha. My co-writer, Heather, also lost her husband, Brock, to kidney cancer. I hope that you have been learning a bit through the articles in The Valley Peak. Stop in at AG and learn more. Your kidneys are very important to you (well, one of them is anyways) so you should learn a bit about preventing kidney disease.

Volume 17 Issue 13 Friday Night is Flight Night. Get a flight of beer or a Taynton Bay cocktail flight for only $10! Pints and Jugs of Arrowhead's Blonde Bombshell will be on special.

Team B.C. Send Off One of our local curlers, Tyler Powell, has won the Provincial under-18 Men’s Curling Championship with Team Colwell, based out of the Okanagan. They are on their way to the Nationals. They travel to Sherwood Park, Alberta for April 2-7. The Invermere Curling Centre is hosting a fund-raiser\send-off this Friday, March 29 from 7 to 11 pm. There will be a silent auction, archery tag and many other fun activities during the evening.

Riddliculous

Some days there are a dozen things to do in town, while other days we struggle to fill The Valley Peak’s events calendar. If you’re planning an event, check out our online events listing at www.valleypeak.ca (click on ‘Upcoming Events’) and see if your ideal date is already busy. Residents and visitors can only make it to so many events in a single weekend. And if you rely on volunteers to make your event happen, you’ll have better luck getting helpers if they aren’t needed elsewhere.

SERVING THE COLUMBIA VALLEY

It is hard to cover everything that happens throughout a week in a single issue of The Valley Peak. Sometimes special days happen on day 5 or 6 of a current issue. That is part of what makes it so overwhelming. With my recent illnesses, it seems like everything is overwhelming. Even with all of the help I get from Heather and many others. Home hemodialysis is very time and energy consuming and it has been hard to keep up with everything. And I can’t really ask for any more support. That is why I am going to have to shut down The Valley Peak for a while, maybe forever. It may sound foolish, but that is just the time of the year. That is the only way I can get in my April Fool’s joke on you with the actual day being on day 5 of this issue. There will be many more. I hope you all have an amazing month of April and spend lots of time out fooling around and enjoying yourselves.

State of Society I saw a guy at Starbucks today who had no cell phone, no tablet and no laptop. He was just sitting there drinking coffee. Like a psychopath.

For What It’s Worth I get a lot of groups asking for free coverage in The Valley Peak. They assume it is a simple little paper that has no expenses and very little value. They would rather spend their money on a flyer or in a larger, more colourful production. Did you know my printing expenses are $3,000 a month? Not free. Did you know that a $25 ad that brings in a single new client is actually more effective than a $250 ad bringing in 8 clients (10 clients would be equal value). The Valley Peak serves more than 2,000 readers every week. They see the ads. How are you telling the public about your stuff?

Hospital

Watson’s Waddle I love this time of year. Dog walks are so much more exciting right now as the snow and ice melt away. I really don’t mind the cold but you really cannot compare winter walks to spring walks. My favourite thing. Fresh scents as things begin to thaw. I love to walk around and leave pee messages for my friends and this is the time of year that that works well. It is interesting getting a message from months ago as things warm up. I can’t believe all the messages I have missed though the winter. It is no wonder that I have felt a bit lonely. Days are tricky with Rob on his dialysis machine for hours. I really don’t like all the alarm sounds so I hang out on my bed in the other room. So I love the quick walks before and the long walks afterwards or the days with Jen at Kootenay Kritters.

Make sure you stop in at AG Valley Foods this Saturday, March 30 to visit the kidney information table. You will learn much more about kidney health than I can ever tell you. Please take care of yourself. You are worth it. My kidney world remains pretty exciting. My GFR (glomular filtration rate), which determines kidney function is at 5%. Below 20 is considered kidney failure. But my big new mechanical kidney, or dialysis machine) in my home makes up for that. It is pretty incredible to be able to clean my own blood whenever I feel like it. So far every second day has me feeling fantastic. It is just a matter of scheduling my life around it as the whole process takes about 6.5 hours. I usually run from 7 am to 1 pm or so on those days, like today. Really, I don’t wish kidney failure on anyone. I am glad I have learned as much about kidneys and their function as I have. There is a lot to those things. Please take care of yourself.

My Progress I am not sure how the cancer is going: my next bloodwork for that is in June. But I know how the kidney failure is going. This home hemodialysis is a relatively pretty good gig. It is an incredible amount of work for me. I cannot accurately describe it other than making sure you are using very sterile techniques is critical. With my lines going directly into my heart, an infection spreads through all my organs instantly. But no issues so far I think. I have to thank Kootenay Kritters for taking care of Watson during dialysis. He loves to get out with Jen and that takes away a lot of my stress. The more consistent hemo schedule has definitely improved my overall health and well-being. My energy levels are increasing by leaps and bounds. I do have to call that good progress.

The Regional District’s have decided that Lake Windermere and Columbia Lake need to be managed more thoroughly. They are hoping for more non-motorized use of the lakes. Boaters are asked to go to the website, www.APRILFOOLS.ca for more information.

Side Effects

KIDNEY AWARENESS AGVALLEY FOODS SATURDAY, MARCH 30 Doing It Right

North Star Hardware & Building Supplies Ltd.

One of the thing about bone marrow cancer is that it is in a lot of places in your body at the same time. It makes it tough to control. One of the main side effects lately is the psychological aspect. My loser back has been sore for a couple of days now. Very sore. Is it just normal tight muscles from overworking it? Or is it bone marrow cancer coming back into the lower spine and pelvis? Life is tough when you are always in pain, fear and doubt. Another aspect is the financial burden. It is hard to keep up with work and earnings. There is a lot of travel involved and with my kidney situation there is also a lot of time spent on medical procedures. I have managed to keep The Valley Peak going but am so far behind on some of the invoicing that it is a struggle. I think I have all that backwards. Invoice first, write the paper later, haha.

If you have a kid under six in your life and are wondering how to use technology with them in a safe and meaningful way, sign up for Healthy Tech Tots, a free, fourweek program by CBAL. Families will meet on Tuesdays at the Invermere Library starting April 9, from 10 am to noon. Register for the program by calling 342-6416. Times sure have changed since we were kids.

Relationships I asked my wife why she married me. “Because you’re funny.” “I thought it was because I am smart?” “See, you are hilarious!”

Big Band Dance We have plenty of live music events in the valley, but the Big Band Dance is something special. This will be the 36th year that our high school’s stage band students have hosted an evening of big band music. It’s your chance to dust off those special dance moves: swing, salsa and waltz. Or just two-step the night away and cheer for our talented local youth. The party takes place at the CV Centre on Saturday, April 13 and includes cocktails and a late-night buffet. Tickets are $25 and are available at Lambert Kipp Pharmacy and Home Hardware. Even if you don’t dance, it’s worth coming just for the music.

Where I Was The page 6 photo is similar to last week’s with home hemodialysis. This one is dialysis in the Trail Renal Ward. To you they look similar but to me it’s very different.
