Polar Bear Plunge

Big Eli B Blues

This Saturday, February 16, whether it’s twenty degrees below or four above, the bravest/craziest people in the valley will be stripping down and jumping into the icy water of Lake Windermere for the 3rd annual Polar Bear Plunge fundraiser. Head down to Kinsmen Beach from noon to 6 pm to get wet, watch the fun, soak in the hot tub, eat, drink, play games and be merry, all in support of the RAD Society and its mission to provide adaptive sports equipment to those who need it. This is a very good cause. Donations are very welcome.

Local legend Elijah Beingessner will no doubt play to a full house at the Horsethief Creek Pub on Monday, February 18, as part of the pub’s Live Music Monday line up. The Big Eli B Blues Band plays their own brand of blues/rock, and it’s always a great show. There’s no cover charge. The music starts at 7 pm. Accompanied minors are welcome until 10 pm, and there’s a shuttle to get you home. Go for the tunes, stay for the yummy food, drinks, great service and friendly atmosphere.

Tooting My Horn ‘Great Coverage’. That was the title of the email I received this week. A new client held an event and put an ad in The Valley Peak. He also went into newspapers in Golden, Cranbrook, Fernie and locally, plus Facebook. Every attendee was asked where they saw the information. Out of 38 people, 23, more than half, were from The Valley Peak. More than all the others put together. And that gives me a new, dedicated advertising client. Is that something you might be interested in?

Robservations There are a lot of things in this world that make no sense. A lot of hate and anger, judgement and competition. This brings a lot of sadness, stress and depression. I love the old song by ‘Ten Years After’. “I’d love to change the world, but I don’t know what to do. So I leave it up to you”. An incredibly insightful statement. What can we do to change the world? It is an interesting question and I have two short answers for you. It may not be easy for one person to change the whole world but you can certainly change one person’s world and believe me, that can be contagious. Just something as simple as holding a door open or smiling at someone can change their energy and attitude instantly and they will carry that on to their next few interactions. It can grow fast. The other thing to do is lead by example. Standing back and criticizing or judging is a waste of time and generates awful energy. Lead by example. Be kind and helpful. You may not be able to change the whole world instantly, but you can change the world around you by changing how you perceive things and just stepping up and doing what is right.

I really have it going on. Rob was talking about changing the world and what to do and it just seems like he is talking about being a dog. What do I mean by that? Well it is simple. Be nice, be friendly, be loving, be grateful. And you will be happy. I am a bit of a therapy dog. I get to visit Columbia House (palliative care at Invermere hospital) on occasion. It is so much fun getting rubbed and fed treats by all the residents. And I can feel them filling with good energy as their day changes. I am also becoming a regular at the Cranbrook hospital. Jen of Kootenay Kritters will take me in to visit Rob during dialysis. It takes a long time as we visit with every patient and staff member we meet on the way up. Even the security guard is a dog lover. A lot of ‘therapy’ dogs go through a lot of training to be suitable for their jobs. I am a natural. Just open my eyes wide, chin on the knee, a bit of a whine or moan and everyone is happy. But really, all dogs are therapy dogs. They are just freelancing out there in the world trying to bring a bit of joy to everyone.

What Year Was It? The first commercial jet-powered airliner debuted, the first non-stop flight around the world took place, the Soviet Union tested their first atomic bomb, NATO and the NBA were established, George Foreman was born and George Orwell published ‘1984’. What year was it? See Page 10.

Kidney Failure I am in a Facebook group with other chronic kidney failure people. It is pretty interesting learning different aspects of my disease. The best part is just having a group of people who actually understand what it is all about. We often discuss that very aspect: how no one really understands what it is like. Eating is tough as normally healthy foods are bad for kidney disease (avocados are loaded with potassium), Always being itchy everywhere is an awful thing. Total muscle fatigue as toxins build up. Healing from any injury is slow as you are full of toxins. Always cold with low blood hemoglobin. Planning a social life is tough scheduling around dialysis. And so much more. It is a very intense, chronic disease. It is just not going to go away unless you get a transplant. I cannot imagine having a new partner come into my life with the tubes sticking out of me. It will have to be a nurse or something like that. Anyways, speaking of transplants, please make sure you sign your donor cards. Your death can save a few lives, a pretty good way to go.

My Progress

WE MAKE YOU SHINE INSIDE AND OUT! DEAN HUBMAN

1346 Industrial Rd #3, Bay #3, Invermere, BC

At this point I do not have much to report. My progress of healing is minimal if at all. Couple more weeks and I will be in Trail training for home hemodialysis. If you are a spiritual person and are looking for something to pray for, then this would be a good one for me. I am praying this home hemodialysis is everything it is made out to be. With no hemo unit in our hospital, this is my last resort to being able to keep living here in the valley. It is so stressful and depressing that I can’t even describe it. I can tell you I am in tears right now writing about it. So far this has been a pretty awful journey, with hope and dream after hope and dream crushed. I have had a lot of support and blessings but I still feel defeated. More and more defeated after each failed step. But they say this should do it for me. I have met one gentleman who says it works great for him and that was encouraging. But I also know of a guy who gave up and let it all just end peacefully. Not quite so encouraging. So like I said, a few prayers so I can continue to love where I live would be great.

One of the strange side effects of chronic illness, be it cancer, kidney failure or any other thing, is the seclusion. My previous life involved me really getting out there, meeting lots of people and making lots of friends. It was nice. But now it is hard work to get out of the house and I have to balance it around dialysis, making it even tougher. Short escapes only as I have a medical procedure waiting at home. I spend a lot of time wandering around my home, searching for I don’t know what. Wondering what all my ‘close’ friends are up to. Life is very busy for everyone and I understand that it can be a bit scary to visit someone who is sick but I believe that I still have a bit of entertainment value in me. Stop in sometime. And this speaks to everyone in care homes or at home sick. If you have a friend or family member in that situation, get your butts in there for visits. You will change their lives.

Rockies Hockey Well the Rockies have been struggling in the area of scoring lately. With only one goal per game they will not win many in the KIJHL. We have been outscored 21 to 5 in their last 5 games. Golden has overtaken them for third spot in the division. We are still locked in for a playoff spot. The Rockies are on the road for a couple more games before returning home for the final game of the regular season. The Fernie Ghostriders will be here on Saturday, February 23. You have lots of notice to mark that on your schedule. The Rockies need your support. A good win to set up for the playoffs will be great.

Enjoying nature is very healthy folks. Are you feeling depressed? Or stressed? Get outside and go for a walk or hike. Your brain will begin to relax within a few moments. Endotoxins will be released that will increase happiness. Really. Go watch a few birds, or slide down a hill on a toboggan, or make a snowman, or just sit and admire the beauty around you. Fresh air and peacefulness are good for all of us. Get away from all your technology and enjoy the amazing world just outside your door.

The Year it Was (From page 4) In 1949, an average home cost $7,450, a car $1,420 and the average annual income was $2,950. Los Angeles recorded their first snowfall, Joe Louis retired as heavyweight champion, Newfoundland joined the Confederation and the first Polaroid camera was sold.

Auction Success The vintage auction in Canal Flats was a great success. That means there will be another one on Tuesday, March 5. Check the ad on page 5 and watch for more details in upcoming issues.

Synonymitis I swallowed a dictionary. It gave me thesaurus throat I’ve ever had.

Phoenix Tears Phoenix Tears is a form of cannabis oil that has cured thousands of people of various chronic illnesses including some forms of cancer. Rick Simpson, the Nova Scotia gentleman who discovered this claims that consuming a full gram per day for 60 days should take care of most cancers. I am on about day 55. It will be interesting to see. I had bloodwork on about day 30 but have not met with my oncologist to see the results yet. It has definitely helped with relaxation and appetite. I will keep you posted on the rest.

Power of Music ‘I love rock and roll’ and a few other songs. I definitely love it when one of those songs from my past comes on the radio. You know, the ones that you know every single beat and every single word. It just makes you feel so good to hear it. Studies show that music is very helpful for memory improvement and recovery as we age as well as for learning and happiness with young children. Enjoy.

Lunch and learn sessions at the Mountain Hub have been getting busier, as more local entrepreneurs and professionals discover this great, new resource. Megan shares her own expertise and brings in other experts to introduce us to tools like Facebook Pages, LinkedIn and Shopify. The topic for Tuesday, February 19 is “dropshipping,” which has something to do with selling stuff online. Lunch and learn sessions cost $20 for non-members, and run from noon until 1 pm.

I heat my place with wood. It is a bit labourintensive but it beats handing my money to B.C. Hydro. They get enough from me already. Heating with a wood stove in the basement makes it a bit tough to control temperature levels with much precision. It is awesome that things are generally always comfy but there is definitely some variance depending on outside temperatures, type of wood and more. My best way to tell my house temperature? That square of butter on the kitchen counter. A bit too hard and time to open up that damper on the stove and get the heat up a bit. I do love the wood heat but am always looking for firewood. Donations are graciously accepted.

Where I Was The photo on page 6 is actually pretty old but very relevant. It is from the Horsethief Creek Pub on a night that Big Eli B was playing. A full house. As it will be this coming Monday, February 18 from 7 to 9 pm.

Organizing In 2 weeks I am off to Trail hospital for 2 weeks of training on a home hemodialysis machine. A chance to change my life. But it is requiring an incredible amount of organization in my house. Peritoneal dialysis took up a whole room for supplies. I am sure hemodialysis will be the same at least and my supplies will be showing up while I am away so I have to somehow make room. Plus the machine shows up with an installation technician the same day I return and a nurse shows up the next day for my first hook-up. And sadly, life is about impressing people so I am having to do a lot of cleaning. My Mom may even come for a visit so I really have to clean.

Computer Crash It is tough when things are out of your control. My awesome productive Monday hit the tank when my computer locked up and wiped out at least 2 hours of writing. I am not even sure what I lost. I may actually miss a couple things because of it. My apologies. Anyways, obviously I will still get it done but quite a bit later today. I just have to write a few articles like this one as filler.

Family Chores A dad is washing the car with his son. After a few minutes, the boy asks his father: “Do you think we could use a sponge instead?”
