Robservations The tongue is quite the part of our body. It is a relatively small thing but it can be incredibly strong. Some say it is the strongest muscle in the human body. The tongue can certainly do a lot of damage. When we speak poorly of others, we can cause a lot of pain. In a small community like this it does not take long for stories to spread through the population and that can have a huge impact on an individual and their life. The tongue can also be very powerful in building someone up. Every person out there is fighting personal battles all day long and a good, positive comment can change everything. I know that it makes a huge difference for me when I receive a compliment. And I like to believe that on occasion, some folks are actually speaking well of me. Similar to our hands, the tongue can be used for good, to help people. It actually feels great to support others. You can literally see the change in someone’s demeanor when you share a positive comment with them. So try to control your tongue. It can be difficult to not jump in when people are discussing others but you can decide whether your input will be positive or negative. Use it for good. People probably prefer positive people.

Watson’s Waddle February is just around the corner and with it comes Valentine’s Day. I can’t wait for all the hugs and kisses that I will get. February is also responsible pet owners’ month. It is designed to bring awareness on pet ownership. You know, feed and water us, walk us, bathe us and more. Rob seems to have had a bit of previous training in this field and with a few reminders from me, he does pretty well. You have to take care of our health which means paying attention to changes in our demeanor or behavior to indicate we are not feeling well. My ears are a great indicator as they sag to one side or the other if something is bothering them. Please get us spayed or neutered to keep the population down as there are already enough of us loving pets to go around. Give us some love and attention. On Valentine’s Day, during the month of February and every single other day. Lots of it! I am sure you have noticed that we hate when you leave us at home and we are excited to see you when you get home. As my human, you are my whole life so thank you for bringing me into your life. Thanks to all of you good humans out there who have taken in an animal as a companion.

What Year was It? It was the worst year of tornadoes in history as 148 storms hit 13 states and 1 province leaving 315 dead, ‘The Sting’ and ‘Blazing Saddles’ were released, Jimmy Fallon was born, Stephen King published ‘Carrie’ (first novel under his own name), the Flyers defeated the Bruins to be the first expansion team to win the Stanley Cup and the Expo World’s Fair was held in Spokane, Washington. I am in a Facebook group around kidney disease. It is quite the place for information. I am amazed at how many people suffer from kidney disease or kidney failure. It is a wealth of information as everyone is posting different questions about their situation. Often our medical teams are unable to give us all the information we need and first-hand experience becomes pretty valuable. One of the most common stories on the site is how very few of us had any idea we were having kidney issues. Most of the symptoms are fairly common and can mean many things. Really, bloodwork is the only surefire way to find out. And if you find out that your kidney function is declining and they recommend changes in your diet, do not mess around. Extend the life of your kidneys as long as possible. It is worth it. Believe me, I know. Total kidney failure with tri-weekly hemodialysis sessions in the hospital is a very intense life change. Try to avoid it.

My Progress I shall find out this week where I am at with my multiple myeloma. There are so many factors involved and it is such a vague situation. Honestly, I am quite nervous about it. I am not sure what I will do if they suggest the cancer is starting to grow and I need more chemotherapy. I will definitely demand more bloodwork as it is so easy for people to make errors every day, lab technicians included. I will be off to the West Kootenay for training for home hemodialysis in a little while. It is a pretty intense system that requires very careful procedures to operate it. It is to be able to stay here in Invermere and live a bit of the life I have loved. No kidneys and travelling to Cranbrook is preventing much of that. I appreciate the efforts of my renal team to try to set me up as best they can to fit my needs. Most folks in kidney failure end up moving to a larger community with a dialysis unit but I do not want to do that. I like it here.

In sticking with last week’s theme, there are a lot of side effects to chemotherapy and kidney failure but they mostly compile into one thing. Depression. And in your mind it is a very justified depression. Life seems to really suck in a lot of ways. Going through dialysis constantly is not really much to look forward to. It is frustrating dropping things and taking three attempts to pick them up. It is tough losing balance and falling into a wall every day. I hate missing curling and many of the events in the area. Or being so tired that I can’t climb a small hill on a walk. But you have to find a way around the depression. Yes it is okay and expected to be sad, but every day is very long if you are deeply depressed about it. I find that I actually do have many great things happen every day. I have to find joy in my reactions to those things. Life may not be the same or what I had hoped for/ expected anymore but it is still life, which in itself is amazing.

Residential and commercial driveway entrances and sidewalks are the responsibility of the owner to be cleared of windrowed snow and ice to the degree that the mobility of vehicular and pedestrian traffic shall not be compromised.

Here’s how you can help... Be a good neighbour. Do not park on the street during a snowstorm or while snow clearing operations are underway. Pile snow on the right side of your driveway (when facing the road) if possible when shoveling. Remove snow from around fire hydrants on or near your property to enable quick access by emergency personnel if the need arises. They will need our support in the stands on Friday, February 1 as they host the division-leading Kimberley Dynamiters. On Saturday, the Nelson Leafs are in town. Trust I would like to thank my legs for supporting me, my arms for being by my side and my fingers …I could always count on them.

Chocolate Dreams That is what I have after leaving Fairmont Pizza & Ice Cream Parlour, the home of Fairmont Chocolatiers. Margo has mastered the chocolate trade. She makes a great variety of treats, all of which just melt in your mouth. They always offer a bit of a free sample, knowing that “You’ll be back!” Ask about their Valentine’s special gift packages. Combinations of dark and milk chocolate treats that will melt your partner’s heart. Imagine a Nanaimo bar on a stick, dipped in milk chocolate. Very decadent. Special Valentine’s treats include chocolate-covered strawberries and truffle hearts.

“How to” Festival Do you know how to tie a tie, fold a fitted sheet, or have another quick, handy skill that can be taught in 10 minutes or less? The Invermere Library is looking for volunteer presenters at their upcoming “How to” Festival on Saturday, February 23. Community groups are also invited to set up and show off what your group is an expert at, to teach all of us what’s unique about you. The free festival runs from 1 to 3 pm and everyone is welcome.

Where I Was The photo on page 6 is a pretty happy moment for me this past weekend. I was able to try out a friend’s fat bike on Lake Windermere. It is always great to try something new.

Waddle so I am really enjoying it. Chet is the companion of a private investigator and he helps the guy solve crime. He causes a few issues as well. It is cute and funny and gives you a great perspective on a dog’s mind. It has been a pleasant surprise and I am only a couple chapters from solving the case.

Happy Birthday Most of us like to celebrate birthdays. The thing to keep in mind though is that too many birthdays will eventually kill you.

Good Read I rarely take the time to read a book as I spend a lot of time reading reference materials for The Valley Peak. But I did receive a book for Christmas titled “Thereby Hangs a Tail”, written by Spencer Quinn. It is written by a dog, similar to Watson’s

Valentine’s Day It is only 2 weeks away on Friday, February 14. Are you prepared? Have you been planning your day with your spouse? Have you figured out what sort of expectations you folks have around that day? Treat your partner (and everyone really) with love and respect every day and Valentine’s won’t be such a big deal. For the single folks, suck it up. Give your mom/sister/niece/daughter/sister-in-law/ grandmother/friend’s wife a call and wish them a Happy Valentine’s Day. They will surely appreciate it. I have always enjoyed carrying around Hershey’s Kisses and handing them out to everyone one I meet. It can add a bit of joy to the singles.
