Rockies Hockey The Columbia Valley Rockies managed to overtake the Golden Rockets for third place in the division this past weekend with a win over the Castlegar Rebels. We have two games left in the regular season, both against the Fernie Ghostriders. Fernie is likely to be their first round opponents in the playoffs as Golden is facing Kimberley in their solo remaining game. They will also face each other in the first round of the playoffs as Creston, with a bit of a weak year will be missing the post season. The Rockies travel to Fernie on Friday and both teams return here on Saturday, February 23. Make sure you get down to the Eddie Mountain Memorial Arena for a preview of the first round of the playoffs.

What is brown and sticky? A stick.

Broken Thoughts I am definitely a pretty good procrastinator. Every issue I am trying to jam a week’s worth of paper time into just a few long days. It leads to at least one very late evening trying to get the writing done. My desk chair leans back comfortably and it is amazing how many times I wake up in that chair with a half-written article in front of me. Often several times within the same article (I guess my writing is very boring). So you find the odd article where my thoughts do not flow very well. A bunch of thoughts just randomly put into print. Imagine me napping during those ones.

2. West Side Story

It is pretty overwhelming when I sit back and think about how many of you read this column, that I myself write, each week. It really allows (or forces) me to make a lot of my life an open book. I often ask myself, “Is that a good thing?” It is very interesting having total strangers tell me they are following my health and ‘rooting for me’. Honestly, I get a bit of a boost out of that. It allows me to push my perspective on a lot of people. We don’t all agree on everything but I have a huge soapbox to use if I am so inclined. I do try to just stay positive and supportive most of the time. I have a great opportunity to call for help whenever I need things. For example, I will be a bit bed-ridden for hours at a time with the new home hemodialysis. So if you are up for a game of crib or feel like visiting and walking a Bassett Hound, I may ‘require’ your services. Thanks to those that have dropped off some firewood. You have made an incredible difference in my journey. I burn lots and always need more. Overall, my openness about my life and thoughts seems to have opened up a lot of conversations in my life. It has helped open my own heart to other folks’ stories and issues. Don’t be afraid to share your issues with people. It is the best way to get support and you will often be surprised where the support comes from.

Dear Proofreader Thanks for explaining the word “many” to me. It means a lot.

Healing Practices I saw a great quote about health yesterday, “Taking medication and thinking you are healthy is like getting a loan and thinking you are rich.” As I see it, the reason someone is sick is not because they are missing a medication but more likely something related to a compromised immune system. So what should we be doing? Eating healthy, natural food is a great place to start. Taking a few walks isn’t going to hurt either. Prevention is the best cure. Medications often just mask the symptoms while the cause remains. Eating healthy, getting a bit of exercise and drinking lots of water are long term solutions to nearly any problem with our bodies.

Watson’s Waddle For the other hounds out there, here is some advice on how to manipulate (train) your human. Just standing around smiling and wagging will not get the job done. Hungry? You have to stand near your dish. Bladder full? Stand near the door. Walk? Go back and forth to the door. Bedtime? Walk in and out of the bedroom. You get the idea. Communication is key. But reminding your human that you are communicating is also important. Between my big, floppy ears and my tags on my collar, I can make a lot of noise with a good old head shake. A couple of those and I have Rob’s attention every time. It is loud enough to wake him up or break him away from the computer (same thing). Do I want some loving and cuddles? I give a certain whiney moan while unleashing my huge eyes and things happen quickly. I find following Rob around at his heels is an effective way to get some attention also. I can’t have him forget about me. Most importantly, be there for your human. They like to be loved and that is easy. Welcome them home with a wagging tail and be ready for some cuddles when they are sad. You can do it.

What Year Was It? The soap opera, ‘General Hospital’ debuted as did the Beatles, with their first album ‘Please Please Me’. Lester Pearson was elected as our 14th Prime Minister and John F. Kennedy was assassinated the same year as the first annual NHL draft and the invention of instant replay in sports. What year was it? See page 10.

This kidney gig has been going on for quite some time now. To me it seems like forever but it has really only been a year and a half or so. It has been interesting meeting a lot of people in kidney failure. They come in all shapes, sizes, ages and genders. No one is immune. And different patients have very different life spans. It is very related to how you take care of yourself through the process. If you pay attention to the dietician and your bloodwork then you can carry on for many years and feel pretty good while doing that. If you continue to eat processed foods, full of sodium and potassium, then you are straining your body as toxins really build up quickly between dialysis sessions. Eventually your body begins to see the effects. I am most likely to cheat on the day before I am going in for a cleaning. If I know the toxins will be dialyzed out of my blood the next day then I may find myself enjoying a meal that would normally be a ‘poor’ choice for me. I prefer to enjoy the life I am leading. I know that I do not wish kidney failure upon anyone. Or any chronic illness for that matter.

My Progress I have found that I am feeling much better going to Cranbrook twice weekly for hemodialysis than I was just doing peritoneal dialysis. I can’t imagine how I might be feeling after a month or two of doing home hemodialysis every two days. My blood should be squeaky clean. Clean enough that many of my dietary restrictions will fade away. Yummy. I really do meet with my oncologist this Friday by teleconference from Kelowna. I am interested to find out what he says about my bloodwork results. I like to believe that I am not all that nervous but I know that I am. I have tried to envision different scenarios and what my response and plan of action will be. I am not a big fan of the chemo scene so I shall be doing my best to avoid or delay any plans in that area. I have been 5 months off chemo and I am still not fully recovered and I do not want to relive that anytime soon. When I was on chemo I felt like I actually was dying. We shall see anyways.

So as I have mentioned a bit, with the couple weekly trips to Cranbrook for hemodialysis, I have been feeling quite a bit better. It is nice to have the strength to walk up a set of stairs again (still not running though haha). I am imagining how it will feel to be doing home hemo on an even more regular basis. In my mind I am a pretty quick learner but I am quite nervous about this adventure. Having my blood drawn out of me into the dialyzer with no one around to mop it up is a bit daunting. My closest neighbours will be on speed dial. Lowering my urea also seems to help a lot with the itching. That is pretty nice and they say the lower urea really helps with a lot of health issues. I am interested to see how much supplies and waste are part of this. There was a lot with peritoneal dialysis and this new machine is quite a bit more complicated.

Canadian Sports Trivia Answer Dr. James Naismith taught at the International Young Men's Christian Organization, in Springfield, Massachusetts. He invented basketball for his football team but he wanted a game that didn't involve physical contact. He wanted a game that involved more finesse for his football team.

Five Slippery Years Amazing how quickly time goes by. Last week was the five year anniversary of the Whiteway being declared the longest outdoor skating surface in the world by the Guinness Book of World Records. It has been a fantastic part of the valley and keeps many locals and visitors active and entertained through the winter. Thanks to all those involved with the start-up and maintenance.

Did You Know? More than 2,000 people in and around the valley will be reading this article this week. Most of you will read The Valley Peak from cover-to-cover almost every week. Who cares? The advertisers certainly do. They are happy with the response they see from their ads. And they are even happier about the affordability. Who are you trying to reach with your advertising? If it is everyone in the valley, then The Valley Peak is the only place to advertise. A very small investment (as low as $24/ad) that is incredible effective. Try it out.

about things. If I get enough propaganda in a certain direction then eventually I start to believe and think that way. I often find out that my friends don’t get the same feed and hence don’t think the same way. It is very interesting. Eye-opening at times.

Trivia Pursuit As you know, every week there are 6 trivia questions in the Skookum Inn ad on page 3.You also know that the Station Pub has Wednesday Night Trivia. In a shameless attempt to promote each other, you will now find at least one VP question at Trivia Night. You can now go to the pub knowing one answer in advance. That could pay off.

Birthdays and Anniversaries

‘Life’ is too short to be worth using for points in the game of Scrabble.

Thought Control I don’t watch a lot of television but I do spend way too much time cruising through Facebook. I find some of it engaging but also find myself wondering why I am wasting that time. One thing that has been happening is I find that it can really change the way I think

How Are the Roads?

The photo on page 6 is a pretty easy one. It is from an upcoming event, the Rod & Gun Club’s Wild Game Dinner.

It is winter folks. How are the roads? They are wintery and treacherous. They are not bare and dry. Do not expect to walk out to your vehicle, get in and drive away without any delays. Expect snow and frosty windows. Expect slow travel and slippery roads. Leave early and travel safely folks.

Where I Was

I get a few calls from folks who want a birthday listed on this page. Unfortunately, many of the calls come the same week as the birthday, which is too late to get it into print. Most people love to see their name in print and everyone likes to hear ‘Happy Birthday’ from their friends, so it is nice to be listed in there. So send them in early. List all the birthdays you want published and send them in shortly. They will be put into the database and will show up at the appropriate time. Email rob@valleypeak.ca.
