Message from the Mayor

reetings,

The summer of 2025 has brought a remarkable wave of progress to Batavia. As the season winds down, we can reflect on months filled with visible improvements to our city’s infrastructure—and look ahead to continued momentum this fall.

One of the most significant efforts underway is the city’s lead water service line replacement project. By mid-summer, crews had already begun work at more than 700 homes, replacing outdated lead lines with modern, safe materials. Many residents have likely noticed fresh black street patches across town — signs of the vital work happening beneath our feet to protect public health.

Another major initiative moving forward into the fall is the complete overhaul of our wastewater treatment plant on Island Avenue. This multi-year project will deliver a state-of-the-art facility, among the most advanced in the region. Thanks to substantial federal grants, a large portion of the cost is being covered—a benefit not all communities enjoy. In fact, several neighboring mayors have already visited the site to see firsthand what Batavia is accomplishing.

As infrastructure improvements continue, downtown Batavia remains a vibrant destination. This summer, we welcomed visitors from across northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, drawn to what we’ve built together — from the Saturday Farmers’ Market and Boardwalk Shops to performances at the Peg Bond Center and riverside programs offered by the Batavia Park District and Public Library.

These successes wouldn’t be possible without strong collaboration among our civic partners — Batavia MainStreet, the Chamber of Commerce, the Park District, the Library, and our School District. Together, we’re shaping a Batavia that thrives today and plans smartly for tomorrow.

I also want to recognize a Batavian whose dedication embodies that spirit: Jimmy Roberts (pictured at left with Marge Brown). For 25 years, Jimmy has organized the Batavia High School Alumni Basketball Golf Outing. More than a reunion, it’s a celebration of community, tradition, and support for the basketball program he has long championed.

This year, Bulldog Nation Alumni & Friends honored Jimmy with a unique gift: a framed section of the original gym floor from the 1906 Methodist Episcopal Gym, once located behind the Batavia United Methodist Church. With help from Mark Lucas of the Batavia Rotary Club, this historic piece was preserved and presented as a tribute to Jimmy’s lasting impact.

It’s a powerful reminder that Batavia’s greatest strength lies in its people—those who honor our past and inspire our future.

Deadline to add sidewalk to the 2026 Sidewalk Removal and Replacement Program is approaching

Each year the City of Batavia performs maintenance to repair its sidewalks. These repairs ensure pedestrian safety as well as reduce liability for property owners and the City.

The timeline for those repairs begins in the fall. Residents and businesses are asked to report sidewalk issues by October 31. City staff then reviews these requests to determine if they qualify for repair and if so, repairs are typically scheduled for the following construction season.

Sidewalk repairs and replacement are completed by the city at no additional cost to residents and/or businesses.

To be considered for repair, sidewalks must have one or more

of the following conditions:

• Walks must be sunken or risen to a height difference of one inch or more between two sidewalk panels.

• The sidewalk panel is broken or separated into three or more pieces.

• 50 percent or more of the surface has deteriorated.

To report a sidewalk you believe needs repair and meets one of the

above criteria, call the Engineering Department at 630-454-2750. A city staff member will evaluate that sidewalk to determine if it qualifies for repair and leave a doorhanger letting you know if your concern qualifies for this program.

For more information and photos, please visit www.bataviail.gov/ sidewalk.

Concerts in the Park with the Batavia Community Band

The Batavia Community Band invites you to enjoy two “Concerts in the Park” this fall at the Peg Bond Center on the Batavia Riverwalk. Performances will be held on Sunday, Sept. 7 and Sunday, Oct. 5 from 3–4 p.m. In case of inclement weather, concerts will move indoors to the City Council Chambers at Batavia City Hall. Each concert will feature a lively mix of musical styles—patriotic favorites, Broadway show tunes, traditional marches, and more. It's the perfect setting for all ages to enjoy a relaxing afternoon of music by the river. Bring a blanket, lawn chair, or just find a spot on the grass.

Formed in 2013, the Batavia Community Band performs at city events and celebrations throughout the year. Now in its 12th season and more than 60 members strong, the group includes local musicians from Batavia and surrounding

communities. Membership is open to all interested musicians—there are no fees to join, and no tickets required to attend performances. The band is led by John Heath, retired director of the Batavia High School band.

Donations are welcome and help support the purchase of new music.

For more information or to inquire about joining, email bataviacommunityband@gmail.com.

BATAVIA DEPOT MUSEUM FALL PROGRAMS

Get a dose of spooky stories with two of our popular programs.

Chills and Thrills

at the Batavia Depot Museum

The Batavia Depot Museum is in the business of collecting and sharing Batavia stories. The museum preserves stories of all kinds, but among the most popular are the ones that are a little hard to explain, a little spooky, maybe even a little supernatural.

One of the oldest ghost stories in Batavia dates back to the 1840s when a few homes, dams and mills stood clustered near the Fox River and more sparsely through the timber to the east and prairie to the west. Route 25 on the east side was a well-trafficked crooked dirt trail. Along this road, a small parcel of land was set aside for a burial ground in 1845, and quickly became the subject of ghost stories.

DAY OF PLAY

Near the burial ground stood the farm and home of James Latham. On Sunday evenings Latham hosted church services at his home. One late Sunday evening after services, a young woman who lived near Geneva required an escort home and James’ son Adolphus volunteered to walk her home. Around 3 a.m. he started to walk back home.

As he passed by the burial ground, he said he saw “an object on the ridge before him, rising from the earth higher and higher. He stopped and saw distinctly the form of a man a half a length above the earth.” This was too much for poor Adolphus. He ran home as quickly as he could where

Praised as “the greatest contribution to the American circus since Cirque du Soleil,” this show is rooted in American ingenuity and features inventive staging, clowning and live performance.

Batavia High School proudly presents its fall musical production of "Disney’s The Little Mermaid," a timeless tale of dreams, transformation and the courage to find your own voice. Featuring iconic songs like “Part of Your World,” “Under the Sea” and “Poor Unfortunate Souls,” this production promises to delight audiences of all ages.

This year’s interpretation invites audiences to look beyond the familiar fairytale. At its core, The Little Mermaid is about more than a longing for another world — it’s a story of growth, identity and the strength it takes to step into the unknown. Through bold visuals, vibrant storytelling and powerful student performances, the show explores what it means to rise above fear and embrace change — even when it means leaving comfort behind.

Batavia Public Library

DISCOVER UNLIMITED POSSIBILITIES

ASeptember is Library Card Sign-up Month!

ll it takes to open the door to endless possibilities is a tiny item that fits in your wallet or can be stored in your phone.

A Batavia Public Library card allows you to do so much more than check out books. From attending free programs and concerts to accessing job resources and homework help, your library card brings cultural, educational and entertaining experiences to everyone.

September is Library Card Sign-up Month, a special time at the Library. It’s like our favorite holiday, but we give you the gifts.

This year’s theme, “One Card, Endless Possibilities,” is a reminder that libraries are for everyone — no matter

The Library will be closed: • Sunday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 1, for Labor Day.

Library Hours

Monday-Thursday: 9 a.m.-9 p.m.

Friday & Saturday: 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Sunday: 12-5 p.m.

TTY: 630-879-8335

your age, background or goals. Whether you're diving into a new hobby, searching for your next great read, brushing up on tech skills, or helping your child succeed in school, it all starts with a library card.

Each September since 1987, Library Card Sign-up Month has marked the beginning of the school year. Having a Batavia Public Library card is an important school supply, and it’s free.

So spark your creativity by playing in the MakerZone. Test out the sublimation printer or heat press. Create a custom mug in the Cricut mug press. Sew anything from clothing to quilts, or tablet cases to tabletop décor with our sewing machine.

Stroll through the stacks looking for new stories and adventures. Or capitalize on your critical thinking skills by signing up for informative programs or diving into online resources.

It’s easy to obtain a card.

Residents may sign up for a library card online at https://bataviapubliclibrary.org/library-card-information or in person at the Library, 10 S. Batavia Ave.

Or stop by our tent on Saturday, Sept. 13, at the Batavia Farmers’ Market. Library district residents may sign up for or renew their card, plus we’ll have giveaways and information about our services, programs and collections.

The wise and learned (and totally adorable) owl is the Library’s mascot. Everyone who signs up for a card in September will head home with a super-cute, drawstring owl backpack. It’s a convenient and fun way in which to carry home your library haul.

Libraries provide information, inspiration, and connection. Check us out today.

Under the Cupola

At Batavia Public Library, we are making strong progress on our 2025–2027 Strategic Plan, with staff actively working toward goals in customer experience, access, marketing, and staff development. Thank you to everyone who has contributed ideas and feedback to help shape our vision for the future.

In alignment with this plan, we are preparing for a major building renovation to enhance our spaces, services and accessibility. On our August staff development day, staff members visited other libraries to gather inspiration. More updates will follow as we move into the design phase later this year.

This fall, we’ll also begin a full roof replacement project to ensure the long-term protection of our building and resources. We are also excited to launch a new library website in November, designed to be easier to use, mobile-friendly

and more accessible for all.

Please mark your calendar for the Library Leader award ceremony on Tuesday, Sept. 2, as we honor Terri and Ken Mate for their outstanding contributions to the Library and the Batavia community through the creation of Inclusion Game Night.

We’re excited about what’s ahead and are committed to keeping you informed throughout every stage of these important projects. Thank you for your continued support!

Batavia artist Lisa Youngdahl shares viewpoints, history and culture through illustrations

Graphic designer and illustrator Lisa Youngdahl lives in Batavia and has been a resident artist at Water Street Studios since 2010. Youngdahl has taught colored pencil classes at the studio since 2019, including her most recent offerings, Colored Pencil on Black and Techniques in Colored Pencil.

As a child, Youngdahl recalls creating original illustrations for her favorite books, sparking an interest in applying her own imagination and creativity to various content.

“I majored in graphic design in college and worked as a graphic designer,” she says. “But I never lost my interest in drawing and began working with colored pencils. I spent some time taking lessons at Beech Tree Studios in Geneva to improve my technique.”

Youngdahl was immediately drawn to Water Street Studios when it opened.

“I have lived in Batavia since 1986, so when I discovered Water Street Studios, and the variety of artists working in different media, I thought

it would be a good fit for me and my graphic design background,” she says. “I use my studio as my office for doing graphic design as well as working in traditional art. I love that Batavia is an ‘arts’ community, supporting music and performance in addition to the visual arts.”

As a longtime Batavian and lifelong artist, Youngdahl appreciates the accessibility of creativity throughout Kane County. “There are many art leagues scattered throughout the western suburbs and Fox Valley area,” she says. “I have recently become familiar with the Wayne Art League, where I led a class and workshop, and judged a show at the Elmhurst Artists Guild. The St. Charles Art Council recently moved into a brick-and-mortar location which allows them to host gallery shows. The Batavia Art League formed just within the past year, meeting at the Congregational Church of Batavia.”

Throughout her career, Youngdahl has created several impressive works and projects. She credits a public art initiative as one of her

About the artist

Lisa Youngdahl always wanted to be an artist, but she knew she would have to earn a living, and majoring in graphic design seemed to be a sensible career decision. Youngdahl’s degree is from Southern Illinois University. After working for Fortune 500 companies as an in-house designer and at an advertising agency, Youngdahl founded Resolution Creative, a visual communications studio. She created print marketing, web design and illustration. Concurrently, Youngdahl also taught graphic design at a college level, most recently at Elmhurst University. She has recently scaled back her business, retaining a few clients so she can focus on her art. She has been a Batavia resident since 1986, married to Greg Youngdahl, and raising their son, Ben.

most challenging endeavors to date.

“I submitted my work to be considered for a mural project sponsored by Water Street Studios, called ‘Activate the Alley,’” she says. “[It] aimed to transform the alley outside the gallery into a colorful and creative space showcasing local artwork.”

The project invited 10 local nonprofits to select artists to create outdoor murals illustrating each organization’s primary programs and services. After submitting her work, Youngdahl was selected by the Fox Valley Special Recreation Association.

“I realized my usual medium, colored pencil, might not translate to a large-scale mural, which was to be created on canvas,” she says. “I became very nervous about my process but was able to combine acrylic painting for the large areas of

color and use colored pencils for details. I was happy with the results. The client’s reaction was ‘I LOVE this! It turned out perfect.’”

A metal reproduction of her artwork still hangs on the exterior wall between Water Street Studios and Kiss the Sky. The original piece belongs to the nonprofit.

For Youngdahl, art is a vital part of community and culture. “Art is a means of expression, and it is important in visually communicating thoughts, memories, feelings,” she says. “Learning to appreciate art is a way to understand others’ viewpoints, history, and other cultures. Learning to create art is an outlet to create your own ideas and sometimes create beauty.”
