By EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@shawmedia.com Polo fire crews, with the help of several surrounding agencies, battled a barn fire in frigid temperatures Friday, Dec. 19, at 14765 W. Milledgeville Road.

“The call came in at 9:05 p.m.,” Polo Fire Chief Jim Ports said Saturday.

“There were lawn mowers ... all kinds of equipment. It was a big barn and another shed went up with it.”

The cause of the fire has yet to be determined and there were no injuries, Ports said. Firefighters were able to prevent the fire from spreading to a two-story home also located on the property, located just east of Freeport Road.

Mutual aid from eight departments helped Polo firefighters on scene for about four hours, Ports said.

The Polo fire department, with mutual aid from several surrounding departments, responded to a barn fire Dec. 19 at 14765 W. Milledgeville Road, 4 miles west of Polo.

“We had to haul water in and then were called back out at 3:30 a.m. when it rekindled,” Ports said.

Departments providing mutual aid included Sterling, Lanark, Forreston,

Oregon, Mt. Morris, Dixon City, Dixon Rural, and Advance Ambulance. Stillman Valley covered the Polo station.

“I want to thank all the area departments for all their help,” Ports said.

Rebecca Duke appointed to clerk and recorder seat

By JEFF HELFRICH jhelfrich@shawmedia.com The Ogle County Board unanimously approved a resolution Tuesday, Dec. 16, recognizing Ogle County Clerk and Recorder Laura Cook, who will retire this month after 271/2 years in the clerk’s office.

The board proclaimed Dec. 19 as “Laura Cook Day” in Ogle County and Board Chairman Bruce Larson presented Cook with a plaque for her service. Cook began as a deputy clerk in 1988 and was chief deputy clerk before being elected clerk and recorder in 2016.

“She has faithfully and diligently served the citizens of Ogle County,” Larson said. “She has demonstrated exceptional commitment. Her service has been marked by dedication to the efficient and transparent operation of county government in its various departments.”

Cook thanked the board and the county for their recognition and work over the years.

“When I first moved here, I knew three people: my husband and two children,” Cook said. “Coming from my humble beginnings of not knowing anyone here to being a representative of the county, I’ve enjoyed every bit of it.

Duke appointed county clerk and recorder

The Ogle County Fair Association had its annual meeting at the farm bureau building Nov. 15.

After a potluck dinner, a business meeting for all association members was held. The meeting included approval of last year’s minutes and treasurer’s reports, and a review of the year’s activities.

Polo celebrates Christmas in fine fashion LOCAL NEWS BRIEF POLO HISTORY Betty Obendorf It is below zero and my house, which I usually keep at 75 degrees, is hovering around 70. My legs do not work well in cold weather, but I try to keep moving in order to get ready for the family gathering, which is coming soon. Maybe I will try a little baking and get the oven going.

I am proud of myself for getting out the other night and going to the old opera house for a play, “The Best Christmas Pageant Ever.”

Patty was picking me up and my daughter, Susan, told me that I needed to go. I am glad I listened to her because I had a wonderful time. I loved the new blue chairs and found them most comfortable. I remember the old opera house seats and sat in them numerous times.

The sound system is great and I did not have trouble hearing. I loved every-

one performing and the play put me in a definite Christmas mood. One cannot get enough of the old Christmas story and watching the children as they played their parts beautifully was amazing. I will look forward to the next play.

Polo’s Christmas celebration came off in fine style and the Polo Historical Society had two full trolleys and two partial ones.

Many people then came into the museum and visited with Kevin and myself. Kevin actually had cleaned out the parking lot at 1:30 at night in order to have it all cleaned for people to park.

He also had the museum all back in order for the day. Many saw the old newspaper table for the first time. I wonder where Paul Graehling managed to find that years ago. It is a treasure.

I had driven around Polo the day before to see where I could easily navigate with my walker. Centennial School was fine, so early the day of Polo’s celebration I went to Centennial School mainly to get some of Beth Green’s baked goods. The cars were unbelievable and of course we were still having

Breakfast with Santa for the kids. I went back home and waited for a while.

Then I went back and parking was better for me. When I entered the gym, I was amazed at all the vendors. They said there were 30 some of them and they all had beautiful Christmas things they had made. I first went to the PEO booth to check that out and, of course, I had to buy a Christmas bucket of Christmas balls for the tree. Now I already had tons of assorted balls but these were green and sparkly and I love just seeing them in the container. I also got a puzzle for Archer, who loves little detailed things. Then I found Beth’s booth and got some baked things.

As I looked around the gym before I left, I thought this would be a super place to do your Christmas shopping. I just do not have that much shopping to do anymore. I shop mainly for the great-grandchildren now. It certainly was a busy day in Polo for the Polo Christmas Festival.

Rochelle man charged with sharing images of child sexual abuse

By EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@shawmedia.com An Ogle County judge denied a rural Rochelle man’s request Wednesday, Dec. 17, to be released from jail as he faces charges of possessing and sharing images of child sexual abuse.

Matthew S. Robinson, 29, was sent back to the Ogle County Jail after making his first court appearance on charges of dissemination of images of child sexual abuse and possession with the intent to disseminate images of child sexual abuse – both Class X felonies – and possession of child sex abuse images, a Class 2 felony.

Assistant Ogle County State’s Attorney Matthew Leisten said Robinson possessed and shared the images through SnapChat between July 25 and Dec. 16.

Leisten said the girls depicted were under the age of 13.

Leisten also told Associate Circuit

Judge Anthony Peska that Robinson’s criminal history included a previous adjudication for a similar offense when he was a juvenile in another county.

“Based on the Matthew S. Robinson type of images and his prior record, he should remain in custody,” Leisten told Peska.

Assistant Ogle County Public Defender Eric Morrow argued for Robinson’s release, telling Peska that Robinson was gainfully employed and had scored low on a pretrial risk assessment.

“He has no pending charges, no violent convictions. He has led a law-abiding life since the juvenile offense,” Morrow said, suggesting additional pretrial condi-

tions be levied by the court such as no contact with minor children, electronic monitoring, and forbidding the use of cellphones or computers.

“He could be released under very strict conditions,” Morrow argued.

Leisten argued that Robinson was listed as a sex offender after his juvenile charge was adjudicated.

Peska agreed, denying Robinson’s pretrial release.

Robinson was arrested Dec. 16 about 10:05 a.m. after Ogle County sheriff’s detectives executed a search warrant at a residence in the 10000 block of East South Woodlawn Road in rural Rochelle.

Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said in a news release that the arrests were made after a lengthy investigation.

He said Ogle County detectives were assisted by the Illinois Attorney General’s Office.

Peska allowed Robinson to be repre-

sented by Morrow at Wednesday’s hearing, but denied appointing that office for further hearings because Robinson earned too much at his current job.

Defendants can request to be represented by the public defender’s office, but they must fill out a financial affidavit that a judge then uses to determine whether they qualify for the free service.

Robinson’s next court appearance is a status hearing scheduled for 10 a.m. Dec. 24.

Class X felonies are punishable by six to 60 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, with three years to natural life of mandatory supervised release. If convicted, defendants must serve 85% of their sentence and register as a sex offender upon their release.

Class 2 felonies are punishable by three to seven years in prison with two years of mandatory supervised release to follow.

A 36-year-old Rochelle man was released from custody Tuesday, Dec. 16, after making his first court appearance on two counts of predatory criminal Randy L. sexual assault of a Belmonte-Lopez child and four counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse.

Randy Belmonte-Lopez was released from custody after a petition to detain hearing.

Ogle County Judge Clayton Lindsey set Belmonte-Lopez’s next court hearing for 10 a.m. Dec. 31 and ordered him not to have contact with the alleged victim in addition to the usual conditions set by the court when a defendant is granted pretrial release.

Belmonte-Lopez was charged Tuesday, Dec. 16, with sexually assaulting and abusing an 8-year-old girl on Dec. 3 and between July 4, 2024 and July 4, 2025.

He was arrested by Rochelle police, who were assisted by the Shining Star Advocacy Center during the investigation.

Belmonte-Lopez was represented in court by Assistant Public Defender Brandon Gecan, but private attorney Brian Erwin has filed his appearance for future court dates.

Trial set for animal rights activist accused of falsely reporting a shooting in Ogle County

An Ogle County judge set a Feb. 17 trial for an animal rights activist accused of falsely reporting a shooting at a rodeo near Rochelle.

Jodie Wiederkehr of Chicago is charged with two counts of falsely reporting an offense, a Class 4 felony, and one count of harassment by telephone, a misdemeanor.

She pleaded not guilty at a preliminary hearing Aug. 20.

Brett A. Barnes, 42, is charged with five counts of aggravated criminal sexual abuse, one count of attempted aggravated criminal sexual abuse and grooming. He was remanded to the Ogle County Jail after his first court appearance Wednesday, Dec. 17.

According to court documents, the incidents happened between May and July and involved a 16-year-old girl.

Assistant Ogle Brett A. Barnes County State’s Attorney Matthew Leisten told Associate Circuit Judge Anthony Peska that Barnes and the girl were coworkers when the alleged incidents occurred at Barnes’ residence.

Leisten said Barnes admitted to buy-

ing alcohol for the girl and allowed her to stay at his home on at least one occasion, arguing that he should remain in jail to ensure the safety of the victim and the surrounding community.

Assistant Ogle County Public Defender Eric Morrow argued that Barnes should be released to continue needed medical treatments in regard to his 2008 kidney transplant.

Morrow also argued that Barnes had no criminal record and would not be a flight risk since he had spent his entire life in Oregon or Mt. Morris.

“He has never been in any trouble before except for maybe a couple of speeding tickets,” Morrow said. “The

court has the ability to monitor his whereabouts.”

Peska denied Morrow’s request for release, noting that the girl was “obviously too young to consent” and that Barnes had a history of “collusion.”

He set Barnes’ next court appearance for 10 a.m. Dec. 24.

The Oregon Police Department took Barnes into custody Tuesday, Dec. 16.

All of the charges filed against Barnes are Class 2 felonies punishable by three to seven years in the Illinois Department of Corrections upon conviction, followed by two years of mandatory supervised release. Convictions also require registration as a sex offender.

The charges against Wiederkehr stem from May 25, when prosecutors allege that Wiederkehr repeatedly called 911 and told an Ogle County dispatcher that she saw

someone get shot at 16989 Ritchie Road, south of Rochelle, when she knew what she was telling them was not true, Ogle County State’s Attorney Mike Rock said in a previous interview with Shaw Local.

That property on Ritchie Road is the location of the rodeo, Rancho La Esperanza, that SHARK and several Ogle County residents have been urging officials to

shut down, according to county records.

Wiederkehr’s attorneys have argued that the context is important, and the intent of those calls was to report animal cruelty.

The rodeo has continued to operate under a permanent special-use permit issued by the county, records show. The most recent event was held Oct. 18.

Every year I am asked what I would like for Christmas. Each year my reply is “Peace on Earth.”

I understand peace to mean not merely the absence of conflict, but also a wholeness to creation. Each Christmas Eve, I believe that you can both sense the expectation that people have for such peace, and for a moment or two a sense of the peace that God spreads upon the Earth.

It is fleeting, but it’s real. I also believe that I cannot fully know such peace until all humanity knows this peace.

A prayer for this time of year suggests that we pray for the needs of the whole world, for peace and justice on Earth.

And because Jesus particularly loves them, the poor and helpless, the hungry, the oppressed, the sick and those who mourn, the lonely and unloved, the aged and little children,

as well as those who do not know and love the Lord Jesus Christ. Christmas is the story of God’s loving purpose that heals all these things by his holy Child Jesus.

Part of the Christmas story we skip over is the account of the Holy Family (La Sagrada Familia) fleeing to Egypt because Herod is about to search for the child, to destroy him.

I am more aware of this part of Christmas this year because I see it being played out yet again. They were migrants, seeking political asylum and running for their lives; but, more importantly, they were seeking how to dwell among us. God is on the move, joining us in our plight. Being the Word that becomes flesh will dwell among us.

God wanders wherever we wander.

And so, peace is possible. Both the receiving of peace, but just as importantly, the giving of peace.

Agnes Hull (Simmons) Aggie was in fifth grade when her father was relocated to Oregon as a Plant Manager for Bettner, 86, passed Quaker Oats. her home on Monroe Street. In 1984 Aggie opened her own woman’s store, Bettner’s, in Conover Square. For ten years, Aggie was an administrative assistant at the Byron Nuclear Plant and retired in1999. A strong advocate of education, Aggie followed in the footsteps of her mother, who was the first woman to serve on the Oregon School Board. She served many years, awarding her children their diplomas at high school graduation. In 1947, while living in LaGrange, Aggie’s dad and his friend, Bob Beasley, hatched plans to build the first cabins on Steuben Lake located in the UP of Michigan deep within the Hiawatha National Forest.

Very primitive—garbage dumps, black bears and potty houses! This was Aggie’s true happy place, where weeks of every summer were spent, both as a child and as an adult. In 2018 the entire family and her siblings gathered at “The Cabin” to reminisce and celebrate her 80th birthday. The cabin is still in the family— five generations and counting! No matter the age, family was always at the center of Aggie’s life. Immensely proud of the accomplishments of her children and grandchildren, Aggie cherished their visits, regaling in the stories of their shenanigans. She also coveted the times spent with cousins and dear friends and neighbors over the years. She was always up for a trip to

Angel’s Treasures. In her final years, Aggie became passionate about serving the homeless and needy in her community. She spent hours making soups and sack lunches, which she delivered a few times a week to the Mini Center at Conover. Aggie was preceded in death by her parents and husband. Survived by her five children: Catherine (John) DeVries, Madison, MS; Elizabeth (Betsy) (John) Hegel, Naples, FL; Mary Bettner, Charlottesville, VA; Edwin (Tina) Bettner, Oregon, IL; Jonathan (Maria Leo) Bettner, Oregon, IL. Ten Grandchildren: Bryan DeVries, Brett DeVries, Scott Hegel, Emily Hegel, Randi VanHorn, David Bettner, Adam Bettner, Bella Bettner, Jack Bettner, Claire Bettner. Great-Grandchildren: Caroline DeVries, Carson DeVries, Harper DeVries, Hudson DeVries, Tate Bettner, Dane VanHorn, Ripp VanHorn. Siblings: George Simmons, Grafton, WI; Susan (Bob) Weirath, Akron, OH. Per Aggie’s wishes, a Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, March 28, 2026, at the River’s Edge in Oregon, IL from 2:00-5:00 PM with a Sharing of Memories at 3:00 PM

By RANDY HOLLAND The Oregon varsity wrestlers finished third at the Stillman Valley Holiday Tournament on Saturday.

In the varsity gym, the Hawks put together a strong medal round to finish with 154 points, seven ahead of Marengo and 18 more than Stillman Valley.

Johnsburg ran away with the team title with 219 points and Wheaton Academy was second with 196 points.

Oregon’s Josiah Perez took the 120pound championship. He had a firstround bye and a 20-5 technical fall in the semifinal.

Perez rolled to a 15-2 major decision in the title match, with a half nelson netting four points in the second period.

Nelson Benesh, Jayden Berry and Jordan Lowe all reached the championship match and were defeated.

Benesh pinned with a cradle in the semifinal but fell 10-3 in the first-place match.

Berry had a takedown to the back at 1:33 in his opener and won his semifinal with a takedown 27 seconds into overtime. In the title match, he was stacked and pinned midway through the second period.

Finishing third was Newt Wright with a takedown in a half nelson.

Fourth-place medalists were Cole Suter, pinned in a spladle at 2:47, and Jacksyn Windham, who lost a late reverse in an 11-6 decision. Kendra Ege rolled to a 16-1 technical fall in the 106pound fifth-place match.

Carson Benesh pinned with a half nelson for fifth, and Tyler Hewndrickson escaped and countered into a takedown and a half nelson to take fifth at 175 pounds.

Suter and Windham both pinned in the consolation semifinal. Landon Batton-Harriet represented the Hawks at 144 pounds.

In the JV gym, Kayden Cover and Landon Ege both pinned their way to titles. Charles Collins had a fall and an 18-12 win before he lost a 17-1 technical fall in the title match to take second.

Oregon posts 4 victories, moves to 9-1 on the season

By RANDY HOLLAND The Oregon wrestlers added four more wins last week to move to 9-1 on the season, a two-point loss to LenaWinslow the only mark on a perfect season.

On Dec. 16 at Dakota, the Hawks scored 43 points against Rochelle before the Hubs won their first match.

Oregon went on to win 49-29.

Dakota gave the Hawks a scare with the meet coming down to the final match, but Oregon prevailed 47-36.

In the Blackhawk Center on Dec. 18, Oregon won big twice to make senior night a success, crushing Genoa-Kingston 62-18 and Stillman Valley 60-23.

Senior wrestlers Colton Flaharty, Jackson Messenger, Josiah Perez and

Newt Wright were honored along with senior statisticians Emma Eckerd and Lizzy Spears.

Against Rochelle, Kayden Cover and Jordan Lowe received forfeits and Oregon forfeited 215. At 120, Josiah Perez scored a takedown at the final buzzer to take a 21-8 major decision.

Isaiah Perez won 4-2. Jack Benesh, Landon Ege, Nelson Benesh and Messenger all pinned. Hunter Skoli, Cole Suter, Tyler Hendrickson and Charles Collins all lost by falls and Wright wrapped up the meet with takedown in a half nelson in 46 seconds.

The Dakota meet started with an Oregon forfeit at 113, and forfeits to both Josiah and Isaiah Perez, Jack Benesh, Ege and Jaxson Oltman. Nelson Benesh and Messenger both

bumped up two weight classes and came through with pins. Suter, Hendrickson and Collins were all pinned in half nelsons and Wright was thrown to his back in the 285-pound match after a forfeit at 215.

Leading 41-36, Oregon needed a win at 103. Cover came through with a first-period butcher to seal the win.

Against G-K, Lowe, Josiah Perez, Skoli and Jasper Messenger all received forfeits. Kendra Ege won 8-3.

Isaiah Perez pulled a chicken wing back, Carson Benesh pinned with a scrape, Jack Benesh caught a cradle, and Nelson Benesh took an 18-2 technical fall at 2:11.
