Catching up after Christmas A 2025 television post-mortem

ife moves fast. One day you’re packing for a relaxing summer vacation and the next you’re sitting down to Christmas dinner with your extended family discussing the effectiveness of New Year’s resolutions. Knowing this, it only makes sense for a few things to have fallen through the cracks along the way. Luckily, if one of this year’s missed items is an overlooked television series, streaming makes it a breeze to catch up, from “Adolescence” to “Zero Day.” In fact, streaming services hit a major milestone this year when, in May, streaming outpaced combined broadcast and cable viewing for the first time since its inception in the early 1990s. According to esteemed ratings site Nielson.com, streaming viewership has increased by 71% since 2021, with a record-setting 44.8% of all TV viewers relying on streamers for content as of May 2025, compared to broadcast and cable methods, which represent a combined total of 44.2%. The remaining 10.9% of viewers are accounted for in the “Other” category.

One of the biggest reasons for this jump in streaming viewership is, of course, the cornucopia of options available across the method’s various platforms. Another boon for platform popularity is the on-demand nature of the viewing experience, which includes the ability to start and stop watching a series at will — a feature that also often leads to binge-watching.

But which 2025 TV series is the most bingeable? Several titles jump out as contenders, so here are a few you may have missed.

In addition to hit returning shows such as HBO’s “Hacks,” Showtime’s Dexter franchise, FX’s “The Bear” and the Netflix phenomenon “Stranger Things,” one of the most-discussed series of 2025 is R. Scott Gemmill’s (“ER”) HBO medical drama “The Pitt.”

Lauded for its true-to-life depictions of hospital emergency room work, “The Pitt” took home five Primetime Emmys after having been nominated in 13 categories at this year’s ceremony.

Led by Noah Wyle, who also starred in “ER” as Dr. John Carter throughout the show’s 15-year run, “The Pitt” follows frontline workers in a Pittsburgh hospital as they are forced to leave their personal struggles at the door and instead battle a myriad of difficult medical cases and emotional situations amid shifting workplace politics.

Since its Jan. 9 premiere, “The Pitt” has even garnered attention from several real-life doctors, including Dr. Brady Pregerson, an emergency medicine physician, who applauds the series for its precision, humanity and greater societal significance.

Season 1 of “The Pitt” is available to stream in its entirety on HBO Max before Season 2 premieres Thursday, Jan. 8.

Over on Netflix, meanwhile, viewers of all ages have been captivated by “Adolescence.”

Starring relative newcomer Owen Cooper (“Film Club”) as 13-year-old murder suspect Jamie Miller, “Adolescence” is a four-part legal drama miniseries exploring the effects of toxic masculinity, insular online communities and bullying — among other social factors — on boys and young men. Hailed for its single-shot style, social relevance and commendable performances, “Adolescence” won eight of the 13 Primetime Emmys it was nominated for, including Outstanding Limited or Anthology Series.

The British miniseries co-stars Stephen Graham (“Snatch,” 2000), Christine Tremarco (“Wolfe”), Ashley Walters (“Top Boy”), Faye Marsay (“Game of Thrones”) and new talent Amelie Pease.

While the Netflix app is open, check out critically acclaimed Canadian comedy “North of North,” which premiered on its home network of CBC, as well as CBC Gem and APTN, Jan. 4, 2025.

Already greenlit for a second season, the series follows Siaja (Anna Lambe, “True Detective”), a 26-year-old Inuk woman and mother who has grown weary of small-town life in Ice Cove, Nunavut. Desperate to create an exciting life full of opportunity for her and her daughter Bun (new talent Keira Belle Cooper), Siaja soon learns how difficult it is to start over in a town where everyone knows her most intimate business.

Likened to “Reservation Dogs” and “Parks & Recreation,” RogerEbert.com reviewer Nandini Balial writes that “the series is a mostly winning exploration of Inuit culture, the stressful limitations of life in a small town and the heartbreaking intersection between who you are and who you want to be.”

“North of North” Season 1 is available to stream now on Netflix, while Season 2 awaits its official release date.

Other series of note this year include the Prime Video dramedy “Overcompensating,” about a football player who comes to accept his sexuality in college; the Hulu/Disney+ original “Paradise,” which stars Sterling K. Brown (“This Is Us”) as a secret service agent investigating a presidential murder; the Robert De Niro-led (“Taxi Driver,” 1976) Netflix miniseries “Zero Day,” chronicling a former president’s investigation into a massive case of cyber terrorism; and NBC/Peacock’s “The Hunting Party,” which sees a team of specialized agents track down killers who have escaped from a top-secret prison that is “not supposed to exist” (per IMDb).

New Year’s Rockin’ Eve and the Big Bash welcome 2026

imes Square may be the home of the ball drop, but the events organizers at ABC have far from dropped the ball when it comes to this year’s performance lineup.

“Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” is preparing the stage for its longest eve of celebration to date, with the special’s producers reporting an additional 90 minutes of New Year’s content “and its most expansive slate of musical artists yet” (per Deadline).

So, grab a drink (hot chocolate is fine), invite your loved ones over and prepare to welcome 2026 with gusto when “Dick Clark’s New Year’s Rockin’ Eve with Ryan Seacrest” airs Wednesday, Dec. 31, on ABC. Although viewers have spent the past 14 years without the cheery on-screen talents of late radio and television icon Dick Clark (“American Bandstand”), the legend’s spirit still lives on in both name and energy. This is in large part to Clark’s protege, Ryan Seacrest, who gained fame for hosting “American Idol” while building somewhat of a broadcasting empire of his own, including 1,577 episodes of “Live with Kelly and Ryan,” 96 episodes of “Entertainment Tonight” and more than 250 episodes of the beloved game show “Wheel of Fortune” following longtime host Pat Sajak’s (“The Pat Sajak Show”) retirement in June 2024.

Brought into the “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve 2006” celebration by Clark himself, Seacrest is now well established as the annual special’s permanent host. Serving as Seacrest’s co-host this year is another familiar face: singer-songwriter and actress Rita Ora (“Fifty Shades of Grey,” 2015), who continues her Times Square co-hosting duties as they were officially announced in 2023.

Per the usual model, “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” is an American celebration, not just a New York one. This means the special will once again feature shows in other parts of the country, such as Chicago, hosted by Chance the Rapper (“The Proud Family: Louder and Prouder”); Las Vegas, hosted by four-time Super Bowl champ Rob “Gronk” Gronkowski and actress/dancer Julianne Hough (“Grease Live!” 2016); and the show’s most recent addition: the unincorporated U.S. territory of Puerto Rico, for which hosting details have yet to be determined as of writing.

The best part of the simulcast, however, is that TV audiences have the privilege of viewing all the celebrations at once from the comfort of their own home, wherever that may be. And with 32 artists performing more than 80 songs over the course of the night, the 2025-26 edition of “New Year’s Rockin’ Eve” is not one to be missed.

Meanwhile, if country music is more your speed, switch over to CBS or Paramount+, where Jack Daniel’s sponsors the 2026 edition of “New Year’s Eve Live: Nashville’s Big Bash.”

Airing live from Bicentennial Capitol Mall State Park in Nashville, Tenn., this year’s “Big Bash” features the musical stylings of Lainey Wilson (“Hang Tight Honey”), Jason Aldean (“Highway Desperado”), Bailey Zimmerman (“Rock and a Hard Place”) and the Fisk Jubilee Singers (“Wade in the Water”), whose legacy holds a firm place in Nashville and American culture at large.

“The original Fisk Jubilee Singers introduced ‘slave songs’ to the world in 1871 and were instrumental in preserving this unique American musical tradition known today as Negro spirituals,” reads the information page at FiskJubileeSingers.org. “They broke racial barriers in the U.S. and abroad in the late 19th century and entertained Kings and Queens in Europe. At the same time, they raised money in support of their beloved school.”

Joined on Dec. 31 by 17-time Grammy-winning gospel singer CeCe Winans (“Come Jesus Come”), the “most awarded female gospel singer of all time” (per CeceWinans.com), the Fisk Jubilee Singers are just one wonderful part of the five-and-a-half-hour music celebration based in downtown Nashville. Those in the Nashville area may also attend the celebration in person for free should tickets remain, although last year’s “Big Bash” reached a record 220,000 attendees, so remaining space is likely to be limited.

Q: What has Zooey Deschanel been doing since “New Girl”?

A: As both the star and a producer, “New Girl” took up most of Zooey Deschanel’s (“500 Days of Summer,” 2009) time from 2011 to 2018. So, she can be forgiven for taking a few years to just sort of dabble.

But for a star of her calibre, “dabbling” includes getting her own passion-project documentary series on HBO Max, “What Am I Eating? with Zooey Deschanel,” and continuing her lead role in one of the most lucrative film franchises of the past decade (she voices Bridget in the animated-musical “Trolls” films, including 2020’s “Trolls World Tour” and 2023’s “Trolls Band Together”).

She also just tried her hand at a holiday romcom with “Merv,” about an estranged couple who go on a Christmas trip with their shared-cus-

Q: I know they’re making another season of “The Gentlemen” — will the guy who plays Freddie be coming back? What else is he doing?

A: I assume you mean “What else is he doing” as in where else can one see him, and not as in “Surely he has nothing better to do.” Because, in fact, a second season of the hit 2024 Netflix series “The Gentlemen” is not even the biggest thing on Daniel Ings’ schedule right now.

Ings, previously best known for playing Mike Parker on the first two seasons of “The Crown,” will indeed be returning as ne’er-do-well aristocrat Freddy Horniman, brother of lead character Eddie (Theo James, “Divergent,” 2014), n the second season of “The Gentlemen.”

But before then, he’ll be appearing on the even more hotly anticipated HBO series “A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms,” the latest show in the “Game of Thrones” universe.

He plays Ser Lyonel Baratheon in that one, which premieres in just a couple of weeks on Jan. 18.

Season 2 of “The Gentlemen,” meanwhile, has no firm release date yet. However, Netflix has promised a 2026 release, and it wrapped filming in October.

Ings has been doing plenty more besides that.

Having just appeared in the buzzy Netflix film “The Woman in Cabin 10” in October, he also recently wrapped filming on another crime series, “Kill Jackie,” being made for Prime Video, though Daniel Ings in “The Gentleman” there’s no word on a release for that one, either.

Deschanel now has two more feature-length projects on the go. The one we’re most likely to see next is the indie comedy “Trash Mountain,” which she’s currently shooting. It’s about a young gay man (Caleb Hearon, “Jurassic World: Dominion,” 2022) who returns home to Missouri to deal with the death of his hoarder father, along with his half-sister, played by Deschanel.

Next up, she’s doing another indie comedy, “Heather of the Valley.” Billed as “an ensemble comedy set between present-day Los Angeles and 18th-century Scotland,” it went into pre-production in May, with shooting expected to begin in the spring.

Back, Kotter” characters — specifically Epstein (Robert Hegyes, “Cagney & Lacey”), Washington (Lawrence Hilton-Jacobs, “The Jacksons: An American Dream”) and Horshack (Ron Palillo, “Friday the 13th Part VI: Jason Lives,” 1986) — were far too old to still be in high school.

It happens when the titular teacher, Tom Rhodes (played by a rising stand-up comedian of the time named — get this — Tom Rhodes, in by far his biggest role) is having a professional crisis.

His failure as a novelist led him to teaching, but now, he’s afraid that his lack of dedication to this new craft means he’s failing his students. The “Welcome Back, Kotter” characters visit him in his dream to guide him.

Note that most of the guidance came from Mr. Kotter himself, but for reasons that are lost to history, the actor who played him (Gabe Kaplan, “Lewis & Clark”) didn’t appear. Instead he was replaced by actor John Kassir (“Tales from the Crypt”), doing what was reportedly a dead-on Kaplan impression.

Though it wasn’t a spinoff, “Mr. Rhodes” was at least a spiritual successor to “Welcome Back, Kotter.” “Kotter” was similarly about a teacher, played by a popular stand-up comedian, who somewhat reluctantly returns to his old school to guide a new generation.

Q: I remember seeing a sitcom in the ‘80s about an author who has to go back to teaching at his old school, and I think I remember seeing some of the “Welcome Back, Kotter” characters on it. Was it a spinoff? What was it called?

A: What you saw was a dream sequence in a single episode of “Mr. Rhodes,” which meant it was an homage to “Welcome Back, Kotter” rather than a spinoff.
