LOCAL NEWS BRIEFS Putnam County Library to screen ‘The First Silent Night’ on Dec. 23

The Putnam County Public Library District will host a free screening of “The First Silent Night” at 1 p.m. Tuesday, Dec. 23, at the Granville Branch.

The 54-minute film celebrates the legacy of the Christmas carol “Silent Night,” which has been translated into more than 300 languages and sung across the globe for nearly two centuries.

The film is rated G and is made possible through Kanopy. The screening is free and open to the public.

The Granville Branch is located at 214 S. McCoy St. For information, call 815-3392038.

Putnam County library offers health screenings

The Granville branch of Putnam County Public Library will offer free health screenings on the first Wednesday of each month from December through February.

Illinois Home Care & Hospice will provide blood pressure, blood sugar and oxygen level checks at 3 p.m.

The screenings are open to the public at no charge.

Granville church plans celebration of life service

Granville United Church of Christ will hold a celebration of life Sunday for the Rev. Faye Gallegos, who died Nov. 1.

The service is scheduled for 1 p.m. on Dec. 28 at the church. Gallegos served the congregation for 17 years.

The Rev. Jan Ringenber will conduct the service, which will include special music.

The service is open to the public.

Funds support new Kewanee domestic violence facility opening in 2026

By MARIBETH M. WILSON mwilson@shawmedia.com State Bank of Toulon has contributed $50,000 to Freedom House’s capital campaign for a new domestic violence shelter in Kewanee, Freedom House announced in a news release.

Freedom House is renovating the former medical arts building at 716 Elliott St., which was donated by OSF HealthCare in December 2024. The new shelter is expected to open in spring 2026 The facility will include 40 beds and feature ensuite bedrooms for families, counseling and advocacy offices, a communal kitchen and dining space and a secure outdoor playground. The

1983 by Princeton resident Nedda Simon and serves Henry, Stark, Bureau, Marshall and Putnam counties. In addition to its 28-bed emergency shelter in Princeton, the agency provides a 24-hour crisis hotline, medical advocacy, legal advocacy and counseling services for survivors of domestic and sexual violence.

The organization maintains outreach offices in Geneseo, Cambridge, Kewanee and Lacon.

“One in four women and one in seven men will experience severe intimate partner violence in their lifetime,” Chloe Lund, the agency’s chief operating officer, said in a news release.

“The need for our services continues to grow.”

Freedom House has served tens of thousands of survivors since its founding.

Be the change we wish to see in the world SPIRIT MATTERS Jerrilyn Zavada Novak At some point in each of our lives, we have likely heard the words popularly attributed to Mahatma Gandhi, “Be the change you wish to see in the world.”

Whether Gandhi ever spoke those actual words or not, he is clearly onto something. After all, the golden rule, in many ways, speaks of the same concept: “Do unto others, as you would have done unto you.”

Jesus’ teachings are challenging across the board. He said: “It is easier for a camel to pass through the eye of a needle than for one who is rich to enter the kingdom of God” (Matthew 19:24).

That’s why there are so many people who are Christian in name only. It is a lot easier to let Jesus’ death and resurrection erase all of our responsibility for the sins we have committed than it is for us to actually live Christ-like lives rooted in his teachings in the gospel.

But this blanket pardon for our sins is not what Jesus taught. He expects us to change our lives to be aligned with his. In Matthew 25:31-46, we are reminded that at the final judgment, Jesus will separate his followers, the “sheep” from the “goats,” according to

how well they lived the gospel.

“Then he will say to those on his left, ‘Depart from me, you accursed, into the eternal fire prepared for the devil and his angels. For I was hungry and you gave me no food, I was thirsty and you gave me no drink, a stranger and you gave me no welcome, naked and you gave me no clothing, ill and in prison and you did not care for me.’

“Then they will answer and say, ‘Lord, when did we see you hungry or thirsty or a stranger or naked or ill or in prison and not minister to your needs?’

“He will answer them, ‘Amen, I say to you, what you did not do for one of these least ones, you did not do for me.’

“And these will go off to eternal punishment, but the righteous to eternal life.”

Some media outlets and their viewers dehumanize immigrants by calling them “illegals.” I have seen this term used in my Facebook feed by others, and it breaks my heart.

Referring to people who live among us as “illegals” strips them of the dignity that is their birthright as sons and daughters of God. If someone has a criminal record and continues to engage in such behavior, then they should be dealt with through proper legal channels.

But the majority of the people Immigration and Customs Enforcement has targeted are not “illegal” at all and have

no criminal record whatsoever. They are people who work hard, contribute to the economy and have applied for citizenship through the proper channels.

If you need a biblical passage to see what Jesus thinks about all of this, look no further than the parable of the good Samaritan in Luke 10: 29-37: “But because he wished to justify himself, he said to Jesus, ‘And who is my neighbor?’

“Jesus replied, ‘A man fell victim to robbers as he went down from Jerusalem to Jericho. They stripped and beat him and went off, leaving him half-dead.

“A priest happened to be going down that road, but when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. Likewise, a Levite came to the place, and when he saw him, he passed by on the opposite side. But a Samaritan traveler who came upon him was moved with compassion at the sight.

“He approached the victim, poured oil and wine over his wounds, and bandaged them. Then he lifted him up on his own animal, took him to an inn and cared for him.

“The next day he took out two silver coins and gave them to the innkeeper with the instruction, ‘Take care of him.

If you spend more than what I have given you, I shall repay you on my way back.’ “‘Which of these three, in your opinion, was neighbor to the robbers’ victim?’

“He answered, ‘The one who treated him with mercy.’ Jesus said to him, ‘Go and do likewise.’”

The way the Samaritan treated the man on the side of the road is the way Jesus expects us to treat each other in thought, word and deed. The highly questionable and cruel tactics ICE is using would not fall under the category of “treating them with mercy.”

If we are to call ourselves Christian – followers of Christ – then we must be transformed from the inside out. There is no room in God’s kingdom for selfishness, greed, lust or any kind of corruption whatsoever.

And if we aren’t able to recognize corruption when it is staring us in the face, then maybe we need to go back to the gospels and immerse ourselves in them until we are able to recognize it and thoroughly reject it.

Or maybe we just need to honestly ask ourselves what the golden rule means to us personally. What would you have done unto you? If you aren’t OK with being treated with violence and contempt, and not given due process, then it is a safe bet that it is not what Jesus would do or have you do either.

Teachers, students transform school with decorations

By ELLA PYSZKA Shaw Local News Network correspondent Putnam County Primary School has been transformed into a festive winter wonderland this holiday season, bringing excitement to students, staff and visitors.

Bright decorations, creatively designed classroom doors and cheerful hallway displays fill the building with holiday spirit.

The decorating project began with the first-grade team looking for a new way to celebrate the season. Last year, students helped decorate trees as part of a friendly competition.

This year, teachers decided to expand the concept.

“First grade is in charge of Christmas this year,” said Morgan Carboni,

a first-grade teacher. “We decided to do a door-decorating contest, and our Primary teachers really ran with the idea and went all out.”

The project was organized by firstgrade teachers Mrs. Carboni, Mrs. Sobkowiak and Mrs. Kirbach, with support from the entire Primary School staff.

Students were amazed when they first saw the decorations, teachers said. One student commented, “I love that the school doesn’t look boring anymore.”

Carboni said the staff’s enthusiasm was the most rewarding part of the project.

“All of the staff got really into decorating to make it fun for our kiddos,” she said. “The school really does look amazing and helps spread Christmas cheer throughout the building.”

Staff members said the decorations lift their spirits each time they walk into the building.

Members of the Chief Senachwine Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution shared stories of their Revolutionary War ancestors during a Christmas party and potluck Dec. 5 at the Lake Thunderbird Clubhouse.

Members recounted their patriots’ activities during the war, including Samuel Dean, who served with the militia at Lexington and later fought at the Battle of Bunker Hill and the Siege of Boston. Dean served four years in the Continental Army.

Other ancestors included Elihu Onion and his father, who “left their horses harnessed in the field where they were working and hurried to the scene of the conflict” upon hearing of the Battle of Concord.

The 56-minute documentary explores the life and work of the American artist known for “Portrait of the Artist’s Mother.” The film examines Whistler’s role as an innovator whose commitment to artistic freedom helped usher in modern painting and abstraction.

Through dramatizations and expert commentary, the documentary delves into Whistler’s personality and artistic contributions. His work is considered alongside masters like Velázquez and Rembrandt.

The library will display a reproduction of Whistler’s “Harmony in Blue and Gold: The Peacock Room, 1876-1877” from the Picturing America collection during the program.

The film is rated G and presented through Kanopy. The screening is free and open to the public.

News from Putnam County CUSD #535 PC Community: Each year, the Illinois State Board of Education (ISBE) releases report cards for schools, including a “summative designation” that reflects overall academic performance and student success. Putnam County High School (PCHS) has consistently earned a “Commendable” rating, indicating strong student achievement and no underperforming student groups.

The most recent ISBE report shows that PCHS not only maintained this “Commendable” rating but also demonstrated significant growth compared to previous years. This places the school just shy of the highest rating and within the top 25% of schools in Illinois on this measure.

We are incredibly proud of this accomplishment and grateful for the important role our families and community play in supporting student learning. As we look ahead, our school improvement plan will continue to focus on the success of every student, aiming for even greater growth in the years to come. We also want to highlight some of the exciting programs at PCHS: Electives PCHS is proud of its robust selection of elective courses designed to provide students with authentic and engaging learning experiences. Areas of focus include Agriculture, Music and Art, Business, and Family and Consumer Sciences.

Area Career Center (ACC) PCHS maintains a strong partnership with the ACC to offer structured pathways that help students transition into careers following graduation. Programs include automotive technology, aviation, building trades, cosmetology, culinary arts, early childhood education, fire science and emergency medical response, machining, residential wiring, and welding.

Work-Based Learning Students who meet established requirements may participate in work-based learning experiences, such as internships, in collaboration with local businesses and industries. These opportunities allow students to earn school credit while spending part of their day in the field developing real-world competencies and building connections for future success.

Dual Credit In partnership with Illinois Valley Community College (IVCC), PCHS offers qualified seniors the opportunity to earn college credit while completing their high school diploma. These courses give students a head start on their postsecondary education and exposure to higher-level learning. PCHS also continues to offer, and seeks to expand, dual credit courses taught on campus by PCHS instructors.

Advanced Placement (AP) Courses In addition to dual credit options, PCHS offers Advanced Placement (AP) courses in select subjects. AP courses provide rigorous academic experiences and may allow students to earn college credit at many Illinois colleges and universities.

Update: Facilities Planning Larson and Darby Group visited the District earlier this month to meet with teams of teachers and staff to collect their feedback on PCES and PCJH facilities. Specifically, they shared their experiences with the current facilities and classrooms and needed enhancements to further improve teaching and learning opportunities.

By MARIBETH M. WILSON mwilson@shawmedia.com Patricia Glade turns leftover bread into donations for Illinois Valley Community College’s food pantry through her program “Crumbs for a Cause,” according to an IVCC news release.

Glade, an administrative assistant in IVCC’s Workforce Development Division, started donating unsold sourdough bread from her market sales to homeless shelters and the campus food pantry, Eagles Peak.

“You might not sell out at the market, and I did not want the bread to go to waste,” she said in a news release. Her family “gets breaded out unless I am trying a new recipe.”

This fall, Glade used fresh loaves as incentives to encourage donations to the campus food pantry.

“It was good to know it had an impact!” Glade said.

Glade learned to bake growing up on a farm, starting with her mother when she was 8 or 9 years old.

“I started baking with my mom when I was 8 or 9 years old, and by 10 or 11, I was doing it myself,” she said. “Eventually, it became my job to bake on the weekends.”

She said the bread-making process is

Glade creates unique flavors using seasonings, fruits, vegetables and cheeses, the news release said. Her Italian herb-and-cheese and chocolate-covered strawberry sourdoughs are popular, while skeptics are often surprised by her taco-flavored variety.

Sourdough is a three-day process, and a lot of things can go wrong in that time, but a lot can go right and you end up with a fantastic product, Glade said.

“When you smell bread, the brain recognizes it is something good,” she said.

During the holidays, Glade expands beyond bread to make decorated sugar cookies and traditional German lebkuchen using a generations-old family recipe.

“I am known for my lebkuchen!” she said.

Each generation adds to the baking tradition. One year, a granddaughter used Halloween ghost cookie cutters to make Christmas “Spirits” and invented stories to accompany them.

The Illinois Valley Community College student newspaper earned top honors at the Illinois Community College Journalism Association annual conference in November.

The IV Leader was named Best Student Media and received firstplace recognition for general excellence during the conference.

Individual staff members also won awards, including Sonja Penney and Abigail Beckcom for news story; Ashton Watkins and Makade Rios for news and sports photography; Sam Bima for sports coverage and columns; and Emma Coss for page design and editorial writing. The staff received numerous second- and thirdplace awards and honorable mentions.

Princeton blaze brought under control by Bureau County Fire crews

The 2026 Hall of Fame Class includes the 1981-1982 PC Elite Eight boys basketball and the 2013 & 2014 PC Elite Eight softball teams.

This year’s induction ceremony will be held on Friday, January 9, 2026, at PCHS, between the boys’ sophomore and varsity boys basketball games against Lowpoint-Washburn, which start at 5:30 p.m.

The Panthers’ 1981-82 basketball team won a sectional championship, finished at 29-1, and lost only to Kaneland in the supersectional.

Team members are Mike Moriarty, Jeff Bonham, John Slingsby, Jeff Aimone, Rick Bean, Kurt Zellmer, Rob Bean, Jeff Palm, Bob Draper, Tim Cockerill, Greg Massino, Jeff Edgcomb, Harold Fay, Ken Migliorini, Martin Lundmark, head coach Dave Mead and assistant coaches Chuck Gault and Ken Jenkins.

The 2013 and 2014 softball teams both went to the Elite Eight. With a lot of overlap on the two teams, they are going into the Hall of Fame as one entry.

The 2013 team defeated Midland 10-0 for the sectional title, bowing out with a 4-1 loss to Milledgeville at the DeKalb Supersectional. Team members were Jackie Ossola, Stephanie Wilson, Lauren Colby, Annie Miller, Ciera Keller, Monica Monroe, Nikki Mertel, Carly Gonet, Taylor Pettit, Venessa Voss, Allison Voss, Shelby Yepsen, Sara Duffield and Destinee Gonzalez.

In 2014, PC won its own sectional, defeating Serena 2-0 before falling to Amboy 1-0 in the supersectional.
