Message from the Mayor
reetings,
In recent months, Batavia has experienced several troubling criminal incidents that have understandably raised concern throughout our community. Local newspapers have reported acts of vandalism — including broken windows and spray-painted doors — as well as thefts from cars, not only in Batavia but across the Tri-Cities.
Our police department has shared that many of these crimes are being committed by individuals who do not reside in our community. It appears that the Tri-Cities have become a regional target for out-of-town offenders who know they might find unlocked homes, garages or vehicles containing items of value. These items — ranging from purses and wallets to cameras, portable electronics and even food — can be quickly stolen and resold.
On a more sophisticated front, our police also report that criminal use of technology is rising. It has become alarmingly easy for bad actors to obtain personal data such as credit card numbers, checking account details or tollway pass codes and use them online to steal money or goods. Here in Batavia, we’ve seen this firsthand. In response, our police department has launched outreach sessions at senior living communities and service clubs, offering tips and resources on how to avoid falling victim to these crimes.
A friendly reminder: Do not share your credit card, Social Security number, driver's license or account information — whether it's for eBay, Amazon or any other platform — with anyone unless you are absolutely certain of their identity.
On the public safety front, I’d like to acknowledge the Batavia Fire Department, which responded to a record 5,383 emergency calls in 2024. This year, through the end of April, our call volume is on track to match or slightly exceed that record. A major part of this success is due to our high-quality fire and ambulance service as a proud member of the Tri-City Ambulance Service, serving Batavia, Geneva and St. Charles.
Looking ahead, our 75th Annual Batavia Fireworks Show will light up the skies on the evening of July 4. This event, which draws the largest crowd of Batavia residents each year, will once again take place in the area around Batavia High School and West Main Street. The Batavia Community Band will present a stirring patriotic concert at 8:30 p.m., followed by a spectacular fireworks display launched from Mooseheart’s grounds just south of Main Street. We look forward to continuing this proud tradition and celebrating Independence Day as a united community.
As always, thank you for your continued support of our town and for being a vital part of what makes Batavia such a special place to live.
Jeffery Schielke
JEFFERY SCHIELKE, Mayor of Batavia
Department welcomed their first comfort dog, River, to their ranks. River, a fox red labrador retriever, received the oath of office before City Council in April. She and her handler, Batavia Community Officer Liz Webb, have been delivering comfort and smiles throughout the region ever since.
Lawn watering restrictions in effect
By ordinance, the City of Batavia limits the use of water for lawn sprinkling to:
• Even-numbered addresses on even-numbered calendar days.
• Odd-number address on oddnumbered calendar days.
• Watering must take place between the hours of 6-9 a.m. and 6-9 p.m. only.
Hand-held hose watering is permitted any time for flowers, gardens, lawns, trees and shrubs.
Watering of new sod or seeded lawns requires a permit that can be obtained at the Community Development Department, 100 N. Island Ave. Please note: permits for sod/seed will not be issued during July and August.
Reminder for residents with lawn irrigation systems: Backflow testing required
If you have an underground lawn sprinkling system, state plumbing code requires that a cross connection control device (backflow preventer) be installed and tested annually — even if the system is not in use.
New garbage, yard waste rates effective July 1
Beginning July 1, refuse disposal costs will increase for Batavia residents. This is the third year of a five-year contract with Groot Industries.
To report missed pickups or for cart issues, please contact Groot Industries at 630-892-9294 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. If Groot Industries does not resolve your issue to your satisfaction or if you have any questions, please contact the Public Properties and Services Division of Batavia Public Works at 630-4542400 Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.
The City of Batavia partners with Aqua Backflow of Elgin, to manage this program. Reminder notices will be sent by Aqua Backflow when testing is due.
The Batavia Cross Connection Control Program is in place to help protect public health by preventing contaminants from entering the public water supply. Your cooperation with the program, including responding to requests from Aqua Backflow or Batavia Water Division staff, is greatly appreciated.
Questions? Call Aqua Backflow, 847-742-2296, or Batavia Water Division, 630-454-2450.

Planning for Batavia's energy future
The City of Batavia has contracted The Brattle Group to conduct a comprehensive electric utility planning study to ensure our energy system remains reliable, affordable and aligned with the city’s longterm environmental policy goals. This project will focus on four interconnected studies:
• The Integrated Resource Plan (IRP) Study is a long-term strategy designed to determine the best mix of energy sources — such as solar, wind, natural gas, and others — to meet Batavia’s future electricity needs while fulfilling obligations to the Prairie State Energy Campus obligations. This study evaluates cost, reliability, and environmental impact to make sure customers continue to receive affordable,
dependable power while aligning with policy objectives.
• The Infrastructure Resiliency Study is a capital planning effort that identifies where and how to invest in the grid to make it stronger against threats like severe weather, aging equipment, security risks, and new technologies like rooftop solar, battery banks, and electric vehicles. It guides long-term spending on upgrades and new projects to ensure reliable power and faster recovery when problems occur.
• The Cost of Service Study is a detailed analysis that evaluates the cost of providing electricity
Apply for an energy audit and save on home upgrades
Thanks to the City’s single-use bag fee, which went into effect in 2023, Batavia is now offering subsidized home energy audits that can help residents lower their utility bills and reduce energy waste. Applications are open for Batavia’s GREEN Program, which will provide audits to 25 local households.
Here’s what you need to know:
Eligibility: Residents must be in good standing with the City — no overdue municipal bills or unresolved code violations. Applicants will also be asked to verify eligibility and sign a waiver of liability.
What you get: A home energy audit from Sustained Ability Construction, followed by a detailed report with recommended upgrades, estimated savings, and next steps
Grant funding:
• 15 standard grants of $1,000
• 10 low-income grants of $3,000
After receiving your audit, you’ll have 45 days to notify the program administrator if you want to apply for grant funding. That deadline is firm —funds will not be held after that window. Even if you don’t receive a grant, the audit provides a personalized plan to make your home more comfortable, efficient, and cost-effective.
How to apply: Applications for the first round have closed. Visit bataviail.gov/energyaudit to learn about applying for the next round of audits and grants.
For questions about this program, mail Batavia@bataviail.gov or call 630-454-2000.
to different customer groups including residential, commercial, and industrial users. The study ensures that rates are set fairly by identifying how each group uses resources and contributes to overall system costs.
• Rate Design is the process of translating the findings of a Cost of Service Study into electricity rates customers pay. It aims to balance fairness, simplicity, and incentives—like promoting energy efficiency—while ensuring the utility covers its costs. Those incentives can also influence future IRP, Infrastructure, and Cost of Service studies, making rate design an ongoing, iterative process.
For updates about this study, please visit bataviailgov/electricstudy.
Household hazardous waste is collected at your front door
The City of Batavia offers a household hazardous waste collection service to its residents. The city’s third-party provider, Clean Harbors Environmental Services, Inc. will provide front door collection of many items that should not be placed in the regular weekly refuse collection.
Residents can schedule a front door pickup by calling Clean Harbors at 866-466-5060 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. If there is no answer, please leave a voicemail and your call will be returned.
For details about the program, or to submit an online request, please visit www.bataviail.gov/hazardouswaste.
Brush collection continues
Curbside residential brush collection is available to residents who pay the monthly leaf/brush fee on their utility bill. Please note that your collection week doesn’t occur on the same week each month; there are seven collections per season. Brush/limbs are to be at the curb for collection no later than 7 a.m. the Monday of your scheduled week, but no sooner than the weekend before that. Crews will make only one pass by each residence. Brush placed out after crews have passed will not be collected until the next scheduled pickup date.
The amount of brush that has been placed out citywide in any given month dictates how quickly your area will be reached, but each side of town is typically completed by Friday of the scheduled week. The collections are for homeowner trimming and meant to handle most minor storm damage limbs that fall during the season; special collections are done rarely. Major storms may affect the schedule, and a notice of any special brush collection will be posted at www.bataviail.gov. Brush/trimmings generated by a private service must be removed by that service and may not be put out for brush collection. If your brush was out at 7 a.m. on Monday of your scheduled collection week and not collected by the end of the workday on Friday, please notify the Public Properties & Services Division at 630-454-2400 no later than the following Monday.
The following procedures must be followed to ensure the collection of your brush:
• Maximum diameter is 6 inches, logs cannot be split; maximum length of limbs is 12 feet.
• Brush should be stacked into one large pile in the front/side parkway with cut ends facing the curb, and placed away from parkway trees, mailboxes, utility poles/boxes, hydrants and parked vehicles. Brush will not be collected from alleys or vacant lots.
2025 BRUSH COLLECTION PICKUP DATES
July 28
Sept. 8
Oct. 13
Dec. 1
Aug. 4
Sept. 15
Oct. 20
Dec. 1
• Brush/limbs must not be tied, bundled, in containers, bagged or put on the street.
• Brush pile should contain only brush. Foreign objects will not be collected.
• Program is for residentially generated brush only, not contractor tree removals or trimming.
• Brush left out on the parkway between collection dates is subject to a code violation citation.
For materials that do not meet the above specifications:
• Groot Industries will collect yard waste bags/32-gallon cans, not to exceed 50 pounds per bag/32gallon can, consisting of twigs, evergreen clippings, roots, stumps and plants on your regular trash collection day through Nov. 30. A refuse sticker should be attached to the yard waste bag or 32-gallon can. If a can is used, it should be clearly marked “Yard Waste” on the side facing the street.
• Residents with limbs/brush exceeding the requirements for the program can contact a private service to have it removed at the resident’s expense.
• Residents in unincorporated areas should contact their township offices regarding brush collection services that may be available to them.
If you have any questions, please call the Public Properties & Services Division at 630-454-2400 weekdays from 7 a.m. – 4 p.m. or visit www.bataviail.gov/brushcollection.
Yard waste collection continues
Weekly yard waste collection is underway and will continue through Nov. 30.
Refuse stickers are available for purchase at several local outlets. A complete list is available at www.bataviail.gov/ stickervendors.
Residents should place a refuse sticker on each generic yard waste bag or 32-gallon can and put bag/can at the curb on their regular collection date. Yard waste is collected separately from regular refuse and recycling. Cans must be clearly labeled yard waste on the front, and a refuse sticker should be attached to the handle. Plastic bags cannot be used. Maximum capacity is 50 pounds per yard waste bag or container. Yard waste carts are also available to rent for a fee through Groot Industries. Refuse may not be mixed with yard waste.
Yard waste includes grass clippings; leaves; branches and brush; other yard and garden trimmings; vines, garden plants and flowers; weeds; tree droppings such as pinecones and crabapples; and other similar organic waste materials. Not included: Sod and greenery from wreaths or garlands is not yard waste and should be disposed of as refuse.
Please contact the Public Properties and Services Division at 630-454-2400 with any questions.

Wipes clog
pipes, so keep them out of the toilet
Help protect our sewer system by placing the following items in the trash—not the toilet:
• Disinfecting, baby and personal wipes
• Paper towels
• Feminine hygiene products
• Plastic or latex items
These materials don’t break down like toilet paper. They can clog pipes, damage lift station pumps, and lead to costly sewer backups and repairs. Please flush only toilet paper — everything else belongs in the trash.
All proceeds support the 2025 Batavia Fireworks Show — a cherished community tradition! Questions? Call or text Mike at 312-545-4308. Ready to register? Visit www.tinyurl.com/bataviatrunksale25.
Helpful tips for sewer back-ups
If your residence experiences a sewer back-up please call the city first at 630-454-2000, or during non-business hours or weekends call the non-emergency number for the Batavia Police Department, 630-454-2500. The problem might be in the city’s main line. By calling the city first, it could save you the price of hiring a private plumber. If the problem is in your own service line, the city can provide guidance in hiring a plumber. The city has emergency response personnel 24 hours per day.
Check your insurance policy to determine if you are covered for sanitary sewer back-up and/or sump pump failure. Many homeowners’ policies do not cover sewer back-
ups or water damage unless you have purchased a special provision for this purpose.
If you experience a sewer back-up follow these guidelines for repairs and clean-up.
• Always call your insurance company first to report any damage to your property or possessions.
• The City of Batavia's insurance company will make a determination if the City is responsible for damages caused by a sewer backup.
Call the City of Batavia Finance Department for insurance claim questions, 630-454-2000.

The new community center has a staffed front desk open from 8:30 to 4:30 p.m. where visitors can register for programs or get assistance. The facility also is home to meeting and program rooms with views of the Riverwalk, a Museum Annex for Batavia Depot Museum that will house collections and workrooms, plus offices for park district recreation staff and Batavia Access TV. The community center will also

offer New Adventures PlayLab, a new STEAM-based enrichment program for ages 3-5.
“Our vision for a new community center is inspired by the voices of our residents,” said Batavia Park District Executive Director Allison Niemela. Through the 2022 community needs assessment survey, it became clear that families are seeking more spaces for connection, learning and recreation, she noted.
“This community center will be a place where generations come together, from children discovering new interests to seniors staying active and engaged,” Niemela said.
“It’s more than a building; it’s a reflection of our shared values and commitment to a vibrant, inclusive community. We’re excited to bring this vision to life for everyone who calls Batavia home.”
The grand opening kicks off at 8 a.m. and runs through noon and includes tours, mini classes, meet-and-greets

The Callahan Community Center is named in honor of Patrick J. Callahan, a 27-year Batavia Park District Park Board commissioner and longestserving Park Board member who retired from the board in May.
This project is funded by a $2.8 million Park and Recreational Facility Construction Grant and Batavia Park District existing fund balances, as well as a $430,000 donation from the Batavia Historical Society. There was no need for a tax rate increase to fund this project.

National attention landed on Batavia 150 years ago this year, when Mary Lincoln got off the train and began a three-month stay at Bellevue, a private mental health sanitarium for women, situated at the western end of Union Avenue. Beginning Aug. 24, the Batavia Depot Museum will host a traveling exhibit from the National Library of Medicine exploring the treatment of people with mental health conditions in America over the last 200 years.
“The traveling banner exhibition and companion website brings to light the tension that has existed between care and custody,” says the National Library of Medicine. “Care and Custody examines this history to understand how the country has moved away from
custodial forms of treatment, toward more inclusive approaches, and worked to protect the rights of people with mental health conditions.”
The exhibit is curated by public historian and educator Anne E. Parsons, PhD (University of North Carolina at Greensboro) and produced by the National Library of Medicine.
Mary Lincoln’s story is famous, but not unique. Bellevue ran as a sanitarium until 1964, and served hundreds of residents and their families over nearly one hundred years of operation.
Care and Custody is on exhibit at the Batavia Depot Museum from Aug. 24 through Oct. 3. Admission to the Batavia Depot Museum is free.

BPS101 Named a Best Community for Music Education!
Batavia Public School District 101 (BPS101) has been honored with the NAMM Foundation's Best Communities for Music Education designation for its outstanding commitment to music education. BPS101 has received this award 11 times in the last 12 years and is one of only 29 districts in Illinois to receive the designation this year.
Now in its 26th year, the Best Communities for Music Education designation is awarded to districts that demonstrate outstanding achievement in providing music access and education to all students. To qualify for the designation, BPS101 answered detailed questions about funding, graduation requirements, music class participation, instruction time, facilities and support for the music programs. Responses were verified with school officials and reviewed by The Music Research Institute at the University of Kansas.
"This recognition continuously highlights the passion our students, staff and community share for the profound power and impact of music. The unwavering commitment to excellence we see is truly inspiring
and continues to enrich our students' lives,” says Tom Kim, superintendent at BPS101. “My sincere appreciation goes out to our dedicated music educators and everyone involved in making this happen."
“In Batavia, music isn’t just an elective, it’s the heartbeat of our schools and community!” says Lisa Hatfield, fifth grade band and orchestra teacher. “Music education gives students
a voice, a place to belong, and a powerful outlet for creativity and selfexpression. Behind it all is a wonderful team of dedicated music educators who bring passion, expertise and heart to their classrooms every single day. We are so fortunate to be part of a district that truly understands the vital role music plays in our students’ lives, and we’re thrilled to have that commitment recognized once again!”

Batavia Public Library LEVEL UP
It can be a challenge in the current financial climate to level up your summer plans, yet a host of opportunities exist at the Batavia Public Library…for free.
For all the Swifties out there, we have a program guaranteed to bring your love of literature into perfect harmony with your love of all things The Tortured Poets Department. In Taylor Swift’s Literary Lyrics, we’ll explore the many literary references contained in her hit songs. Think “The Great Gatsby,” Pablo Neruda and Sylvia Plath.
The history of wine pairs beautifully with these long summer days in Secrets of the Wine World. Serious tasters through novices will toast to a new appreciation of wine after discovering some history, along with some exciting new changes.
Your teen could emerge victorious — and with bragging rights — if they team up with their friends and trounce opponents in good-natured Ping-Pong matches. Teen PingPong Tournament is a testament to how cool the game has become, thanks in part to recent popularity it garnered after being recognized as an Olympic sport.
And LEGOS, well, they’re always
going to be sweet and we’ll never outgrow them. Teen LEGO Building Challenge will allow teens to hog all the LEGO bricks and pieces for a change and flex their own design skills with a massive build.
School will begin in a blink and working in some quality family time (that’s fun and doesn’t involve being trapped together on a long road trip) is key. Spend some screen-free gaming time together during Game
On @ The Library
If you didn’t make it to a beach house this summer, you can build your own during Gingerbread House Battle: Beach House Edition. This gingerbread house hits different than your icing-frosted holiday version and your only limit is your own creativity…and the laws of physics.
READING FOR THE REWARD…AND PRIZES
While we’re trying something new and fresh this summer, have you leveled up your reading to match? Summer Reading Challenge allows you to venture out of your reading comfort zone while also earning prizes before we head back to school.
your summer exploits at the library
Now through Monday, Aug. 4, you may read or listen to any book you desire, regardless of whether it's online, checked out from the Library, pulled from your own bookshelves, or borrowed from a friend.
Simply log your books as you complete them, either on paper logs available on our website or in the Library, or via the Beanstack app. Each completed reading log will earn adults and teens the chance for prizes. Children from babies through 8th grade will earn the chance for rewards by reading daily or completing extra adventures. For more information, visit the Library’s website at www. bataviapubliclibrary.org/summerreading-club-2025, or contact the Youth Services Department at 630879-1393, ext. 500, or the Reference Desk at ext. 200.

LIBRARY RENOVATION PROJECT
As outlined in our recently completed strategic plan, the Batavia Public Library is committed to providing excellent user experiences. Two key goals support this commitment: optimizing the function and comfort of our library spaces and improving accessibility to enhance ease of use for both patrons and staff.
Since the Library opened in 2002, no major updates or changes to our building have occurred. Now it is time for a significant refresh and reimagining of our interior spaces. We are excited to share that several important renovation projects are on the horizon, including a new roof and improvements to the interior layout and design of the Library while respecting its classical design.
The Library has been preparing financially for this renovation for years, allocating funds to our Capital Improvement Fund at the end of each fiscal year to ensure a responsible and sustainable approach. As of June 2025, Batavia Public Library has saved $6.5 million to fund both the roof replacement and interior renovation projects. These improvements will be
The Library will be closed:

• Friday, Aug. 15, all day for staff training.
• Sunday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 1, for Labor Day.
completed without increasing the Library's levy or seeking a referendum.
The roof replacement is scheduled for this summer and fall and is expected to have minimal impact on day-to-day operations.
We are in the early planning stages for the interior renovation, with a goal for work to begin in early 2026.
We will provide regular updates on these projects and notify the community in advance of any temporary impact on services. Updates will be posted on the Library’s website.
We are excited about what’s ahead and look forward to creating an even more welcoming, functional, and accessible library for the entire Batavia community.

Shop the Boardwalk!
By Grace Rosati • Photos by April Duda Photography
Batavia has always been a lively hub of stores and restaurants. Through the Batavia Boardwalk Shops, however, small businesses get a chance to try out the market and hopefully move into the thriving retail district.
The program is run by Batavia MainStreet, a nonprofit organization that works to build up the community.
“This year, we're going into our sixth season, and we are really happy about our offering,” said Beth Walker, executive director. “We have a wide selection of different things that we don't have in our downtown district.”
This season, the Boardwalk Shops dive into the rich culture of Batavia’s residents from Giron Guatemalan Apparel and Home to Kumba’s African Market. Other shops include Stitched By Stephanie, with handmade crochet creations; Tabletop Game Shop, which focuses on board, card and dice games; and Pet Wants, a premium pet food store.
The Batavia Boardwalk Shops feature 10 establishments. All vendors go through a rigorous application process. While in the program, each owner also completes a series of workshops,
designed to prepare them for the season and beyond. Over time, these businesses are able to grow and make a name for themselves in the community.
“My favorite thing about the Boardwalk is getting to know all the different shop owners and watching their entrepreneurial journey,” Walker said. “It’s a unique experience. We really encourage each of them to make their place what they envision as their brick and mortar. Hopefully, customers will grow to love them, and those businesses will open in our downtown retail district.”
The Batavia Boardwalk Shops are open Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays until the end of December.
