Local news Plano residents have options for celebrating Independence Day remains our focus PLANO RECORD
Last Friday, we were thrilled to welcome the Kendall County Record, Plano Record, Sandwich Record, and LedgerSentinel into the Shaw Media family. Kathy and Jeff Farren purchased the Kendall County Record in 1973 and have published award-winning newspapers for the last 42 years. It was a pleasure getting to know Kathy and Jeff over these past few months. We are honored that they selected our company to continue their legacy in Kendall County. Shaw Media owns many other Northern Illinois publications, including the Daily Chronicle in DeKalb County, The HeraldNews in Will County, the Morris Herald-News in Grundy County, the Kane County Chronicle in St. Charles, the Lake County Journal in Grayslake, the Northwest Herald in McHenry County, The Daily Gazette in Sterling, The Telegraph in Dixon, and the two dozen weekly papers in Suburban Life Media that encompass communities in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake and Will counties. All of our publications focus on local news – the information residents cannot find anywhere else. Like the Farrens, the Shaw family knows a little something about having deep roots in a community: Shaw Media’s first publication – The Dixon Telegraph and Herald – began publishing in 1851. Benjamin Flower Shaw, then 20, became the owner and editor. B.F. Shaw would later work with Abraham Lincoln to solidify the Republican Party in Illinois.

Plano residents wanting to make the most of the Fourth of July holiday weekend will have plenty of options. The neighboring communities of Yorkville and Sandwich each have parades, fireworks and other activities planned. In Yorkville, the Fourth of July parade steps off at 9 a.m. Saturday at the high school baseball field at the north end of Church Street near Tower Lane and will finish in the same location. Parking will be available but residents are encouraged to use Game Farm Road off of Route 34 to access it because of the construction on Game Farm Road and Somonauk Street. Parade attendees can park in the parking lot behind the Yorkville Public Library and City Hall, as well as the parking lot at Yorkville High School. Following the parade will be activities in Town Square Park sponsored by New Life Church. Also, the Knights of Columbus of Yorkville will be taking donations for next year’s fireworks throughout the day. Town Square activities will begin immediately following the parade and will include children’s foot races, rides, water fights and a performance by the Yorkville Community Band. Food and drink also will be available for purchase. Fireworks will begin at dusk Saturday and will be shot off near the corner of Route 47 and Countryside Parkway. The Yorkville Big Band also will be performing at 8 p.m. at the Larson-Nelson Funeral Home. The city of Sandwich will host its annual Freedom Days festival and events. The festivities will begin with a parade at 10 a.m. July 4 at the Sandwich Fairgrounds, 1401 Suydam Road. The Freedom Run will be July 5 with a 1-mile race starting at 8 a.m. and a 5K race beginning at 8:30 a.m. Registration will remain open on the day of the race, ending at 7 a.m. and 7:45 a.m., respectively. A Tot Trot race for children 5 years and younger will begin at 7:45 a.m. No registration is required. All races will take place at James Knight Park at 1001 N. Latham Road. The Sandwich fireworks display also will be held at the Sandwich Fairgrounds at dusk on Sunday. Patrons can enter the fairgrounds for the fireworks at the main gate off of Suydam Road and exit through Lisbon Road. Food also will be available at the fireworks display. The city of Sandwich asks for a donation of $5 a family.
