Dist. 88 to lead special ed co-op Plano schools still studying cost of partnership; could serve 130-150 students By LYLE R. ROLFE news@kendallcountynow.com Four area school districts may soon be sharing the costs of educating students with special needs, according to Dr. Hector Garcia, Plano School superintendent. The Plano District 88 School Board has unanimously approved
an agreement to form a new cooperative. The agreement outlines the proposed participating school districts, as well as the structure, membership, financing, governance and other basis requirements for the cooperative. Garcia said the cooperative is being set up with Plano as the fiscal agent and host.
Illinois school districts have a choice of two ways for educating special-needs students in their districts. These are students who have IEPs (individual education plans) based on their specific needs. They range in age from elementary school through high school and some into their early 20s.
Garcia said every school district must provide education for special-needs students of all ages and for ones who may live in a neighboring district that does not have a program. This includes students with autism to those with emotional disorders to cover the full spectrum of special needs. Every school district must ei-
ther have an in-house special education program or belong to a cooperative according to state law. And the teachers must be trained to teach students with special needs. Plano had been a member of the Kendall County Special Education

Barrels and brats – on a roll PLANO RECORD German food, music heritage and beer abounded last weekend in downtown Plano with the 11th annual Wurst Kitchen Oktoberfest. The event has become a yearly staple here, with events under the big tent featuring a menu including schnitzel, roast pork, kassler rippchen, bratwurst, potato salad, sauerkraut, strudel and more. Ed Schleining, event sponsor and owner of the Wurst Kitchen Sausage Co. in Plano and Aurora, noted that all of the food was prepared in their own kitchens. The event also included German polka music, a Miss Oktoberfest contest and the ever popular “chicken dance.”
