What makes a family cattle farm work? For George and Heather Dutrey of Woodburn and their children, it takes a lot of teamwork. “I would definitely say, with the cattle side of things, you got to really enjoy doing it because it is a lot of work,” said George. “It’s year round. There never seems like a lull time. You’re feeding something or checking something, and it’s great for the kids, they learn a lot of things, especially (about) life and death. That’s one of the first lessons you learn about, especially with raising mama cows with having babies and bad weather.” Dutrey Family Farm
George said the family has a “40 head of cow-calf” operation — Dutrey Family Farm. They raise calves to wean and feed them until they are between 700 and 800 pounds. Then, the Dutreys sell them to buyers. “We get them from baby calf to the time they’re ready to go on heavy feed,” George said. George said he grew up around sheep and cattle. Heather was also raised on a farm. George also does artificial insemination on many of their heifers to help bring stronger genetics into their operation. “He takes a lot of pride in the genetic aspect of our cattle,” Heather said. Many opportunities Heather said what she likes most about a cattle
farm is there are so many opportunities for their children to learn different things through the farming operation. “The hard work that we have to put into it,” Heather said. “Just the determination to finish something, but also, one of the downsides is sometimes we’re out late at night.” The Dutreys have three children — Will, 7, Josi, 6, and James, 4. Heather said their children are starting to help — such as opening gates and filling buckets. Their children have even helped bring a baby calf into the family’s garage — or even on their kitchen floor — to dry him off with a hair OST photo by AMY HANSEN
