Featuring the people, places and businesses that make up our communities!
Like any year, 2023 brought some ups and downs for us, but we’ve kept one thing consistent — creating products that reflect our commitment to the community. In the spirit of that commitment, we felt it was even more important this year to focus on what makes our community GREAT — our local businesses and their employees.
This magazine is our annual look at the local business community. We give these businesses the opportunity to have an article so they can give you an in-depth look at their business — at what they can do for you.
Please take the time to browse this publication and let these businesses and their employees know you saw their ad or article. They are the lifeblood of our community and deserve our continued support. Every dollar spent with a local business comes back into our community.
We encourage your feedback. If you have ideas on how we can improve this magazine or any of our other publications, please feel free to reach out to me at jmsmith@shawmedia.com.
I hope you enjoy reading our magazine as much as we enjoy bringing it to you and as always, I encourage everyone to SHOP LOCAL!!!
Thank you,

Through a multi-year grant, the City of Mendota will increase its programming to steer the youth in the community away from the dangers of substance abuse.
The City of Mendota was selected for the grant of $1.875 million from the Substance Abuse Mental Health Services Administration. The grant, which will be paid out at $375,000 for the next five years, will be used to establish positive activities, classroom curriculum and community connections to help prevent youth substance use and increase mental wellness, explained Annie Short, a Mendota resident and volunteer grant writer with the city.
“We want to create positive engagements and positive environments for our young people,” Short said.
The City of Mendota will establish a community coalition to help steer the project. The coalition will include
representatives from the local school districts, police department, community organizations and residents. The city will hire staff to oversee the grant and its programming.
In addition to the grant to increase opportunities to support the youth, the City
of Mendota will focus on revitalizing downtown after two major fires burned down blocks of buildings on Main Street and Illinois Avenue in late 2022.
“We have been working with insurance, applying for grants and establishing design
plans,” said Emily McConville, City of Mendota City Clerk and Economic Developer. “With the grant to support our youth and the ability to start rebuilding where the fires happened, we are excited for what is to come to Mendota in 2024.”

Communication is an essential part of our lives, but when there are problems with one’s hearing, it can cause a breakdown in communication and lead to feeling isolated and hold one back in life.
Born and raised in the Illinois Valley, Dr. Kendra Theodosopoulos became an audiologist to help people maintain communication and stay active and healthy in their lives. She and the team at Theos Audiology Solutions are committed to finding hearing solutions that fit patient needs.
Theos Audiology Solutions has locations in Peru, Galesburg and now Streator. The staff includes two audiologists: Dr. Theodosopoulos
and Dr. Kristin Williford, patient care coordinators and Maricia Cocanour who is training to become a hearing instrument specialist. The doctors and patient care coordinators are there to walk with patients through their journey to regain their hearing.
Using the latest hearing testing, the team at Theos Audiology Solutions provides kind and gentle care to help patients, from schoolage children through adults, resolve their hearing problems.
Hearing problems usually start with something simple, Dr. Theodosopoulos said. It often starts with noticing a loved one is listening to the television loudly, having
trouble with conversations and it can snowball into someone pulling back from their active lifestyle. Grandparents declining a chance to see their grandchildren’s musical concert or attend a sporting event because of their hearing limitations.
“We want to help our patients bring back those activities they love and regain the joys in their life, like attending a music concert, spending time with loved ones,” Dr. Theodosopoulos said.
Technology improvements have made hearing aids sleeker, smaller and more versatile too. Many include the feature of Bluetooth capabilities, allowing a user to take phone calls, answer text messages and even
listen to music from their phone with their hearing devices.
“Just like your phone and computer have gotten smaller, so too have hearing devices,” Dr. Theodosopoulos said.
At Theos Audiology Solutions patients can count on continued care through their journey, from initial exams and a device fitting to continued follow-up and maintenance to ensure a hearing device is fitting and working to one’s hearing needs.
“We treat you like family and we want to make sure you are happy,” Dr. Theodosopoulos said.
Book your visit today and regain your hearing and your lifestyle.

Closing the digital divide in rural communities in Illinois is a top priority for Surf Internet. Steve Carenda, Director of Special Funding for Surf Internet is leading his team as they pursue federal grants to help offset costs for broadband development in rural locations in the Illinois Valley.
Reliable, fast broadband service enhances communities, enabling students to complete work outside of the classroom, farmers to utilize remote diagnostic tools to monitor crops and residents to work from home, as well as enabling businesses to grow and so much more. Fast, reliable Internet service can provide an improved quality of life. From video conferences to telehealth, it takes a reliable Internet service that should be available to all residents, whether they reside in urban or rural communities.

With 43 years of experience in flooring installation, he’s known for his detailed work.
“He’s very good at custom fitting and adding those details that make the flooring look amazing,” said Annette Fischer.
When Carpet Weaver founder Mark Weaver approached his top-rated installer with the business opportunity to open a store location in the Peru-LaSalle area it seemed a bit daunting at first, Annette Fischer recalled. She was from the tiny town of Roanoke, IL and was offering interior design

With her eye for design and his top-notch installation skills, the pair took a leap of faith and opened the store

ers with a large selection and standing behind their work to keep customers.
“Flooring is a big ticket purchase and we want to help our customers make the most of their dollars and find the right look, product and fit for their home and lifestyle,” Annette Fischer said.

For more than 40 years George G. Leynaud of the Law Office of George G. Leynaud, P.C. and Leynaud Law Group LLC has been fighting for his clients’ rights in the Illinois Valley and beyond. It’s what makes him a top personal injury lawyer in the Illinois Valley, standing up for individuals and their families.
“I believe that having quality and experienced legal representation does not only exist in big cities, like Chicago,” Leynaud said. “I am proud to be a lawyer who has advocated for the rights of the injured. I am proud to be a lawyer who has helped a number of families cope with the effects of personal injury issues. Most importantly, I am proud that I have helped my clients recover fair compensation for the physical and emotional damage they have incurred.”
The firm practice includes personal injury, wrongful death, nursing home negligence and abuse, mediation, uninsured and underinsured motorists, workers’ compensation, criminal felony, misdemeanor, driving under the influence and other traffic offenses, medical malpractice as well as real estate, insurance and business litigation.
From simple issues to complex cases, the firm can provide invaluable legal counsel and support to its clients.
“As top personal injury lawyers, pursuing justice when it matters most is what motivates us to fight for our clients,” Leynaud said.
Leynaud is recognized among his peers for his toprated professionalism and outstanding client services. He has been recognized by Chicago Lawyer Magazine as a Top Lawyer in Illinois for Personal Injury Plaintiff and Workers’ Compensation. Further, consistently he has been named as a “Leading Lawyer” by Leading Lawyers Network, a division of Law Bulletin Publishing Company, an honor that is limited to the top 5 percent of lawyers in Illinois. George was also highlighted and featured in the yearly publication of Leading Lawyers
Magazine. He has been selected by his peers as a “Super Lawyer” for the past five years. Also, he has been named as one of the Top 100 by the National Trial Lawyers and has “10.0” Top Attorney rating with Avvo.

Leynaud was born and raised in the Illinois Valley area, attended local schools, and has raised his family in the area since beginning his law practice in 1983.
Leynaud has spent his career
fighting for his clients. Hiring a top personal injury lawyer is essential to make sure victims receive the full compensation they deserve, not settling for less.
In a case of note, Leynaud helped his clients, victims in a severe highly contested liability automobile accident that took the life of one of the passengers, to receive one of the largest settlements in Bureau County. His clients were awarded more than $2.1 million in damages.
“Negligent parties must be held accountable,” Leynaud said. “Whether a large or small company or individual is responsible, we will fight to ensure you and your family get justice.”
Leynaud since the beginning of his practice has and continues to be heavily involved in criminal defense and has successfully represented thousands of individuals faced with misdemeanor charges to felony offenses, including very serious drug trafficking cases, attempted murder, drug possession, theft, battery, and non-violent offenses to DUI and petty traffic offenses.
Since November of 2023, the firm has expanded with the addition of an associate attorney, Michael J. Zywica. He is the son of Attorney Rebecca Leynaud and Michael Zywica. Zywica is a 2013 graduate of St. Bede Academy High School, and his undergraduate degree is from Eastern Kentucky University in 2017, where he received a degree in marketing with a focus in professional golf management, having achieved a PGA mem-
bership. He has also instructed golf at several top golf courses in Illinois and Colorado.

Do you have a favorite coffee shop or restaurant that you go to where you feel like you’re at home? A place where the employees know your name and treat you like their own family? That is what the employees at NuMark Credit Union strive to do every day for their members.
Credit Unions historically were created to follow the mantra of “people helping people.” Instead of being owned by investors, each member that opens an account in turn becomes a partial owner of the organization.
This means that their focus is on the members, and how they can help to make members’ lives easier and help them reach their goals. The products and services offered are specifically designed and priced to represent that focus to benefit the membership.
When you join NuMark, they want you to feel like you’re joining another family and are a part of something important. They are a financial cooperative that values its members’ needs, as well as the communities it serves. Their goal is to show you
how you can do even more with your money to help get your next car, put a downpayment on a new home, or save for your children’s futures –whatever your dreams may be, NuMark wants to help you reach them.
NuMark Credit Union is a fairly newer addition to the area, following the acquisition of Pioneer State Bank last year, but has over 60 years of experience serving the community under its belt. They offer a variety of services from checking and savings accounts, to helping you finance
your auto, home and more.
Our experts at NuMark are always happy to sit down with you to discuss your financial goals, whether personal or commercial, and help you dream big to achieve your goals. We have locations in Earlville, Paw Paw and Sublette, and our Woodhaven Branch will be opening soon for Summer. On the playing field and in the classroom there are exciting improvements at LaSalle-Peru High School. This spring the new sports complex opened for use.
“The soccer field, tennis court improvements, and construction of new softball and baseball fields at the Sports Complex offer state-of-the-art facilities for our students,” said Superintendent Steven Wrobleski. “Having 12 tennis courts opens L-P to be a regular host site for large tournaments and post-season state events. The turf on the soccer field gives our players a consistent playing surface and reduces the time our maintenance staff must spend on upkeep. Our kids and coaches are thrilled to have our own baseball and softball facilities.”
At the next sports event find students supporting L-P athletes. Science teacher Carol Navarro brings more than 30 years of experience in athletic training and sports medicine, including work with patients and teaching in college. Now she is helping students explore career options in her Sports Medicine I and II courses, developed in collaboration with the school’s Head Athletic Trainer Gina Martin.
“It’s great to watch students, many of whom have received care, learn how to tape an ankle, why we tape, which direction to hold the tape and so much more,” Navarro said. “It’s important to give students as many opportunities to see various jobs and careers.”

Maze Co started the year the Illinois and Michigan Canal opened in 1848, dealing in lumber and nails. This company is one of America’s last remaining nail makers. Peru is also home to the offices of Carus Chemical Company,
started in 1915. Today it is one of the largest manufacturers of potassium permanganate in the world.
