Hastert enters guilty plea Ex-county GOP chairman Toftoy: ‘I’m just shocked to hear about it’ with federal prosecutors that recommends he serve no more than six months in prison. The deal would allow Hastert to avert a trial in the case. A judge, however, could go beyond that recommendation and give Hastert up to five years behind bars, according to the AP. In exchange for the plea, pros-

The AP described Hastert’s brief written statement as narrow, s a y i n g t h a t h e Dennis structured bank Hastert withdrawals in a way that they would not be detected. The judge asked Hastert, “Did you know that what you were doing was wrong?”

He responded, “Yes, sir,” the AP reported. The change-of-plea hearing was the longtime GOP leader’s first court appearance since his arraignment in June, when he pleaded not guilty in the same courtroom. Hastert was accused in a May 28 indictment of handing as much as $100,000 in cash at a time to someone referred to only as “Individual A” to ensure past misconduct by Hastert against

Oswego forbids roadside solicitors By NATALIE STEVENS news@kendallcountynow.com Following a unanimous vote from the Oswego village trustees, roadside soliciting has been eliminated throughout the village effective immediately. The board voted last Tuesday evening to change the previous ordinance that did allow roadside soliciting on highways throughout Oswego. Earlier discussions the board had showed that they were originally considering restrictions to the ordinance, not a complete elimination. Oswego Police Chief Jeff Burgner brought the issue to the board’s attention after complaints regarding solicitors have risen in the last several years, with Oswego receiving about 150 complaints and the village of Montgomery receiving about 100 in three years. Most of the complaints in Oswego have been at the Route 30 and Orchard Road intersection and the area of Route 30 and Douglas Road. A recent rear-end accident at Routes 30 and 34 linked to a driver distracted by a solicitor had Burgner looking at the “safety issue” of soliciting. In earlier discussions, Burgner had suggested that the ordinance limit areas in the village where soliciting could occur and also the number of times an organization was allowed to solicit each year. Trustee Pam Parr expressed support for limiting soliciting to just local groups, referencing a group that came up from out of state to collect. Trustee Joe West wanted to do away with roadside soliciting all together. “I think it’s
