Oswego man in standoff gives up gun SHAW MEDIA A male subject surrendered his handgun to Oswego police early Monday afternoon, ending a three-hour standoff at a residence in the 5000 block of Fox Sedge Court in the village. Oswego police said they were
summoned to the home at 10:12 a.m. to check on the well-being of an individual. Upon arrival at the home, police encountered a male subject in the garage of his residence armed with a handgun. As a precaution, police said they set up a perimeter around
the residence and area residents were advised to go to their basements and stay away from doors and windows. Area traffic on nearby Half Round Road was also shut down, police said. Shortly after 1:30 p.m. the situation was safely resolved when the person cooperated with police
and relinquished his gun. Oswego police said no one was injured and there were no other occupants in the home at the time of the incident. The male subject was transported to a local hospital for examination. His name and age were not released.
Police said they are still investigating the incident, but no charges have been filed. Police said they wish to extend thanks to the Kendall County Sheriff’s Office and the Montgomery Police Department for their assistance in handling the incident.
Campaign to highlight downtown ‘Montgomery in Motion’ aims to bring in visitors, businesses By JOHN ETHEREDGE jetheredge@shawmedia.com
For more than a decade, a succession of village of Montgomery officials have grappled with how to attract more people and businesses to the village’s small, yet historic downtown area. The village took a major step towards transforming the downtown when it constructed a new village hall on River Street in the downtown area. The opening of the new village hall in 2008 was followed by the Fox Valley Park District’s renovation of Montgomery Park at River and Mill Streets in the downtown. The village has also scheduled a number of public events in the downtown, including summer concerts held in conjunction with the Fox Valley Park District and popular annual events such as Montgomery Fest in August, the River Run 5/10K in October and Christmas tree lighting in December. Now, to build on the success of those events, village board members recently voiced support for the establishment of a “Montgomery in Motion” marketing campaign for the downtown area. Richard Young, the village’s community development director, told the board that village staff came up with the idea of the marketing program as part of an ongoing effort to “help jump start redevelopment activities in the downtown area.” In preparing the program plans, Young said village staff reviewed recommendations for the downtown in two previously approved plans: a 2005 plan for the downtown and a 2009 Metra Parkn-Ride service study.
Hiking in the new year Photos by ERIC MILLER emiller@shawmedia.com Area residents of all ages turned out Friday morning to participate in the annual Kendall County New Year’s Day Hike at Lyon Farm near Yorkville. Among those leading the tour was Mark Harrington, a former Oswego resident, retired teacher and outdoor enthusiast. Those attending the free event were asked to bring a donation of three cans of soup, two to be donated to the Kendall County Food Pantry and the remaining can for a communal soup pot which was heated up and enjoyed by the participants following the hike.
