‘Good friendships and
fellowship’
Quilters Dozen has met for years at Oswego museum to make hand-stitched creations By ALLISON SELK news@kendallcountynow.com
F
or the past 15 years, Ellen Bass and Donna Schoeberlein have spent their Thursday mornings and afternoons at the Little White School Museum in Oswego surrounded by friends who share their same passion for quilting. When asked what kept her in this group for 15 years, Bass said “good friendships and fellowship.” This group, The Quilters Dozen, meets each Thursday to work on quilts, up to three at a time, owned by members of the group. Hours spent at the quilting club determine who will get their quilt up next, and upon arrival, quilters can pick and choose which quilt they would like to work on that day. Bass and Schoeberlein are currently the longest running members to this group which was started in 1985 by 13 women who lived in the Oswego-Montgomery area. Since there were 13, which in the baking world is called a baker’s dozen, they called themselves the Quilters Dozen. Currently, 18 ladies – no original members are living – are members of this group, and an average of 12 to 15 ladies attend weekly. Schoeberlein said she likes this group because they only hand stitch each quilt, opposed to machine stitching.

This was Bertz’s first quilt as a member of the group, so she asked each one to write their name on the quilt.
