Glessner House – Chicago During the last few decades of the 19th century, many of Chicago’s elite families lived along a six-block section of Prairie Avenue, a north-south thoroughfare located on the South Side of Chicago.

Originally extending from 16th to 22nd streets, Prairie Avenue evolved into an upscale neighborhood after the Great Chicago Fire of 1871.

By the late 1870s, Prairie Avenue housed the finest mansions in Chicago, all equipped with their own carriage house – the grand homes of George Pullman, Marshall Field, Phillip D. Armour, John B. Sherman, Ebenezer Buckingham and William W. Kimball, among others.

By the 1890s, Prairie Avenue was one of the most exclusive addresses in the city. According to a guidebook published around the time of the 1893 World’s Columbian Exposition, the street was described as “the most expensive street west of Fifth Avenue.” Others simply referred to the mansion-filled neighborhood as “Millionaire’s Row.” Perhaps the most celebrated and striking residence on Prairie Avenue was the Glessner House.

Designed by noted architect Henry Hobson Richardson, the fortress-like mansion, located on the southwest corner of 18th Street, was constructed for John J. Glessner, one of the founders of the International Harvester Co. Commissioned in 1885, designed in 1886, and completed a year later, the house for the Glessner family gave Richardson the opportunity to blend elements of French and English buildings he admired into a new type of American architecture.

The fortified looking home was constructed upon an Illinois dolomite foundation, with walls of Braggville pink granite. While the walls of the house were made using Chicago common brick, the structural bricks were hidden behind 8- to 10-inch-thick granite façade stones.

Designed in what became known as the Richardsonian Romanesque style, the stone fortress, with its granite walls and large Romanesque arches surrounding both front and side entrances, had very little ornamentation compared with the

Built during the turbulent Gilded Age, when many of America’s elite industrialists were living in extravagant homes, the Glessner House is a remarkably simple, comfortable home that is both medieval in character yet modern in its relationship to the urban environment. Unlike many other Prairie Avenue houses, the Glessner House was built close to the lot line and was attached to the house next door.

certain purpose. The home contains five bedrooms for family and guests and eight for servants. There are 11 fireplaces and seven different staircases throughout the home. Although it was initially lighted with gas, the home was eventually electrified by the early 1890s.

After John Glessner’s death in 1936, the house was deeded to the Armour Institute (now the Illinois Institute of Technology), and the home was converted for business use.

In 1966, preservationists joined together and formed the Chicago School of Architecture Foundation to save the Glessner House and turn it into a museum. In 1970, Glessner House was listed on the National Register of Historic Places.

A big problem for a small town – heroin in Braidwood Note to readers: This is the second installment of a four-day series examining the cause of Will County’s record number of heroin-related deaths in 2016 and the county’s efforts to quell the epidemic.

bstanley@shawmedia.com BRAIDWOOD – Although heroin is a problem throughout Will County, number of arrests and overdose deaths. Why? “That’s the million-dollar question,” Braidwood Police Chief Nick Ficarello said. “If we could identify, ‘Why here?’ I’ve been told by the Drug Enforcement Administration that Braidwood, Reed Township and Wilmington Township has the highest heroin deaths per capita south of Chicago.”

A veteran of the Will County Sheriff’s Office and Cooperative Police Assistance Team, Ficarello has been police chief for nearly two years and has made heroin enforcement the Braidwood Police Department’s top priority.

“With [a higher] amount of felony drug arrests has come a significant reduction in burglaries and property crime,” Ficarello said.

Police have been forced to rethink enforcement and prevention efforts.

Late in 2016, the department began urging heroin addicts who wanted to quit to use the agency as a resource for treatment. Users who come in during daylight hours are matched with volunteers who have them placed immediately in a treatment facility. Ficarello said that 10 people have sought treatment in the past four months.

“Our volunteers are from the community. We have some retired social workers, and I think having someone who’s not a cop makes it a little more relaxed. They can talk to them, they can ride with them to the treatment center,” Ficarello said.

Braidwood officers also are using Narcan to revive people from heroin overdoses. Braidwood police report that they saved nine lives with Narcan, although some of those were the same victims in more than one instance.

“I have had people ask me, ‘Why are you saving them? Let them die,’ ”

Ficarello said. “But that’s somebody’s son or daughter. We have to try.”

Ficarello said he lost a great-niece to heroin.

“It’s really struck home,” he said.

Heroin deaths in Braidwood have varied in ages, from a 53-year-old man to a 15-year-old girl.

Ficarello said police believe that most of the heroin comes to Braidwood from Chicago, as well as that most deals in Braidwood are being made by addicts to fund their own purchases in the city.

“Though there are some ‘professional’ dealers who will deliver from Chicago, but we’ve been advised by the DEA some of the dealers they’ve had contact with prefer to stay out of Braidwood. I’m very proud to hear that,” Ficarello said.

Stockwell worked hard, helped everyone ‘He was a man’s man all the way’

JOLIET – You don’t have to buy that. I’ll make it for you.

That was the tagline of Adam Stockwell of Joliet, who worked in construction since he was 18 and belonged to Glaziers Local No. 27.

“He was an all-American-baseball hat-gym shoes-construction guy who could make anything and fix anything,” said Susan Stockwell, Adam’s wife.

When Susan wanted a new front door, Adam transformed their old door into a planter box and hung it on the fence. When Susan bought a new mailbox, Adam turned the old one into a bird feeder and placed it in a tree.

“He never wasted anything,” Susan said. “He recycled things. He made things beautiful.”

Susan said she’d grown up with Adam, who was friends with her older brother. By the time she was age 13, Susan had a crush on Adam. They began dating when Susan was 17 and were married in 1990. They had two sons, Joshua and Blake.

“He was the love of my life,” Susan said. “He was my best friend, my husband. He was my life.”

Susan said Adam worked hard at his job and then worked hard around the house when he came home. His friendly handyman methods endeared him to the neighborhood residents, especially the senior citizens.

“Everyone came to Adam when they needed a project done,” Susan said. “He’d lend a hand and never took a dollar for it. That’s just who he was.”

In 2010, Adam was diagnosed with colon cancer. Susan said Adam’s response was, “OK, doc, what do I have to do to fight it?’ ” Whatever doctors told Adam to do, Adam did it, Susan said.

Adam was a fighter, Susan said.

After a year of treatments, Adam went into remission and back to work – in construction – until the cancer metastasized to his lungs in 2013, necessitating stronger chemotherapy followed by radiation.

And then Adam went into remission and back to work.

“He was an all-American baseball hat-gym shoes-construction guy who could make anything and fix anything,” said Susan Stockwell, Adam’s wife. Adam Stockwell died at age 55 after a long battle with cancer and its treatments.

“He crawled up and down scaffolding,” Susan said. “He worked on the 54th floor of tall buildings and hung out windows, until March 2016 when he couldn’t do it anymore. He said if he couldn’t do it to his fullest, he wasn’t going to do it anymore.”

So Adam spent his days outside,

tending to the pond and landscaping. He remodeled the bathroom. He golfed. Susan said Adam loved golfing – the only interest Adam loved more than the Chicago Cubs.

“He always said, ‘There’s no crying in baseball,’ ” Susan said. “Every time I would cry, he would say, ‘Stop it. You

have to be strong.’ ” Last summer, Adam taught Susan how to clean the pond and the pool.

He sat her down to watch world news, science programs and debates because she said that Adam loved “anything that exercised his mind.”

“He was like a sponge. He could not get enough information,” Susan said.

“And he tried to teach it all back to us.”

Adam never gave up and he never complained, Susan said. Whenever anyone asked Adam, “How are you?”

Adam replied, “I’m fine.”

“He was a man’s man all the way,” Susan said.

But Adam couldn’t fix the cancer that suddenly claimed his life on Feb. 11. Adam was 55. Adam’s legacy, Susan said, are in Joshua and Blake.

Since their father’s death, they’ve raked the leaves and cleaned the garage – tasks their father once did.

“They were watching,” Susan said.

But Susan had one last “Adam” story to share.

“I’ll tell you something about my husband I admired,” Susan said.

“During the year he was off, he picked up building model airplanes. He built fighter jets to remind him to fight this battle with cancer. He hung them outside my garage. They’re still flying around – a symbol of Adam.”

Other scams Wold wants residents to look out for is any organization that claims to assist the local police department. The Channahon Police Department has never received any money from a telemarketing company nor do they make phone calls for cash donations.

Before making a donation, check with your own police department first.

I get all kinds of calls for all kinds of donations, legitimate and illegal ones. The first rule of thumb is to never give out any kind of personal information, including your social security number, credit card number, even address, even if the caller seems to know a lot about you. It’s easy to get information on just about anyone these days.

I won’t give my credit card number to legitimate organizations over the phone, even if it’s something I want to donate to. They might give me a hard time about the cost of postage and manpower to send me paperwork instead, but if they want my hard earned money, that’s the way it is.

A new one is the “Yes” scam, Wold said. The caller asks a simple question, such as “Can you hear me?” and when you answer yes your response is recorded and used to make unauthorized purchases.

How this actually works still is unknown, so maybe we all just say “huh?” to that question if we don’t know who we are talking to.

Too rude for you? Then ask who is calling, and if you don’t know the person, hang up. It’s not rude to hang up on people because we are inundated with so much stuff over the phone.

Wold said he suggests never making a donation or doing business with any organization that solicits over the phone without checking to make sure they are legitimate. The same holds true for door-to-door solicitations.

I found a way to stop my landline from ringing all night with solicitations. I answer the call, if there’s hesitation, it’s likely a robocall (it automatically calls numbers until someone answers, then a person gets on the line). I immediately hit the block call button on my phone and hang up.

It’s becoming a challenge to see how many I can stop from soliciting me – I may be winning.

Shaw Media correspondent Christina Bergbower and friends Lynn Doyle and Kimberly Bell dressed in their formal black dresses, beaded and lace wraps and pearls and headed for “A Night at the Movies” at the Billie Limacher Bicentennial Park and Theatre on Sunday evening.

The box office opened at 5 p.m. when theater doors opened and patrons came to watch the Oscars with fellow movie and theater enthusiasts.

“I love dressing up, and I do know the ‘Breakfast at Tiffany’s’ movie,” Bergbower said while dressed as actress Audrey Hepburn. “I belong to the Lockport Women’s Club, and we like to get together and do fun things besides charitable work.”

For the first time in theater history, “A Night at the Movies” took place because “the theater is an extension of the movies, it all goes together. Some people who do theater end up doing film as well,” park manager Lori Carmine said.

“Plus we like the Oscars and we always need a reason for a party.”

Tickets were available at the box office for $15, which allowed the Oscars viewing from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., hors d’ oeuvres, games of blockbuster bingo, guess the dress, and a red carpet with paparazzi and interviews by WJOL 1340 radio personality Lynne Lichtendur.

Also available was a cash bar with beer, wine and a specialty drink called the

Red Carpet Sparkler.

Little Saigon restaurant in Shorewood partnered with the theater on the Red Carpet Sparkler and offered this drink to its patrons with $2 of each drink going back to the theater.

Carmine said she had not seen an event like this in the Joliet area, so she and the development director of the Will-Joliet Bicentennial Park Foundation, Debbie Greene, collaborated to bring it to life.

“We called the Academy Awards office and legal department to receive permission to live stream the show. We had permission if we did not use the name Oscars or Academy Awards in the event title,” Greene said.

Hosts of the evening said the event had two purposes: the first was to “get people in the building and see a resource they may not know about,” and the other was to raise money for programs through the Will-Joliet Bicentennial Park Foundation.

Greene said she would like to see her fundraising goal surpass the previous year, so she and other hosts discussed a 2017 goal of $50,000.

“The people here do such a beautiful job with community events. They highlight how nice this little theater is, it’s really a sweet and lovely place,” Cyndi Schwartz of Joliet said.

“I hope everyone had a good time.

It’s a nice community feeling and I hope they come back and try other events here at the theater,” Carmine said.

“We’re out in the country. Maybe they think the police department won’t spend time pursuing this,” Vehrs said, adding that if the budget allowed for more officers to fight drug use, that’s what the city would use them for.

One Braidwood officer currently is assigned to a federal Drug Enforcement Administration task force and another is on the Metropolitan Area Narcotics Squad.

“For a small department to have two officers assigned to task forces is kind of unique, but that’s how big this problem is,” Ficarello said.

The DEA and task forces operate in Braidwood when police request additional manpower.

“We’ve had to change our attitude on heroin [treatment], but investigation is still just having some go-getters who will cultivate informants and information, and a number of concerned citizens who come forward with tips,” Ficarello said.

Vehrs said the police keep tabs on a number of “major players” in Braidwood’s heroin activity, and enforcement efforts will continue.

“It’s pretty bad down here. Young children don’t know what they’re getting into,” Vehrs said. “I wish we didn’t have [this problem]. I’d like to see it gone. So we’re going to keep going after it.”

Most expected the night to be dominated by Damien Chazelle’s celebrated musical “La La Land,” up for a record-tying 14 nominations. But its night started off with an upset, with the film losing out on costume design to the Harry Potter spinoff “Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them.”

Nearly two hours into the broadcast, it finally got on the board with an award for production design.

Instead, it was Mel Gibson’s World War II drama “Hacksaw Ridge” that was the evening’s first double winner, taking awards for editing and sound mixing. The bearded Gibson, for a decade a pariah in Hollywood, was seated front and center for the show, and was a frequent presence throughout.

Ezra Edelman’s “O.J.: Made in America” took best documentary, making it – at 467 minutes – the longest Oscar winner ever, beating out the 1969

Best Foreign Language Film winner “War and Peace” (431 minutes). Edelman’s documentary, while it received an Oscar-qualifying theatrical release, was seen by most on ESPN as a serial, prompting some to claim its place was at the Emmys, not the Oscars.

Edelman dedicated the award to the victims of the famous crime, Nicole Brown Simpson and Ronald Goldman.

“This is also for other victims, victims of police violence, police brutality,” Edelman said. “This is their story as it is Ron and Nicole’s.”

LOS ANGELES – The Jimmy Kimmel-hosted 89th Academy Awards seesawed between jabs at Donald Trump and passionate arguments for inclusivity, with early awards going to Mahershala Ali, Viola Davis and “O.J.: Made in America.”

The show kicked off with Justin Timberlake dancing down the Dolby Theatre aisles, singing his ebullient song, “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” from the animated film “Trolls.” It was an early cue that the Oscars would steer, at least in part, toward festiveness rather than heavy-handedness. Protests, boycotts and rallies have swirled ahead of Sunday night’s Oscars. But host Kimmel, in his opening monologue, quickly acknowledged that he “was not that guy” to heal a divided America.

Kimmel instead struck an irreverent but sarcastic tone, singling out Meryl Streep, whom President Donald Trump derided as “overrated” after her fiery Golden Globes speech last month.

Listing some of her credits, Kimmel said Streep has “phoned it in for over 50 films.” He led a standing ovation for the “overrated” actress before adding a pointed punchline: “Nice dress, by the way,” he said. “Is that an Ivanka?”

The host then predicted Trump was sure to tweet about the night’s awards at 5 a.m. “during his bowel movements.”

The wins for Davis, who co-starred in Denzel Washington’s August Wilson adaptation “Fences,” and Ali, the “Moonlight” co-star, were both widely expected. Their awards marked the first time in more than a decade that multiple Oscar acting honors went to black actors.

“I became an artist, and thank god I did, because we are the only profession to celebrate what it means to live a life,” said Davis, the best supporting actress winner. “So here’s to August Wilson, who exhumed and exalted the ordinary people.”

Ali won best supporting actor for “Moonlight.” He glowed on the stage as he informed the crowd that he and his wife, Amatus Sami-Karim, welcomed a daughter four days earlier. The actor thanked his wife for “being such a soldier through the process.”

Both stuck to more private reflections over politics. But a more blunt protest came from a winner not in attendance. Best foreign film for the second time went to Asghar Farhadi, director of Iran’s “A Salesman.” Farhadi, who also won for his “A Separation,” had said he wouldn’t attend because of Trump’s travel ban to seven predominantly Muslim nations. WINNETKA – When a largely white public school nestled in Chicago’s wealthiest suburbs planned a daylong civil rights seminar, it drafted two National Book Award winners as keynote speakers and crafted a syllabus that would be the envy of most liberal arts colleges.

But New Trier, a high-achieving, 4,000-student high school regularly ranked among the nation’s best, found itself stepping into the minefield of the national dialogue on race and civil rights. Some parents and conservative groups have deemed the event during Black History Month “radical” and “divisive.” Dueling petitions circulated, heated emails were exchanged and hundreds of people packed a school board meeting beyond capacity.

While New Trier’s demographics and resources aren’t reflective of many public schools, the debate highlights the complications of teaching civil rights when much of the country struggles to discuss race. Some educators worry their work will become more difficult after a polarizing election that’s fueled divisions, even in homogenous and largely Democratic areas such as the upscale Lake Michigan suburbs making up New Trier.

For educators the goal is simple.

High levels of manganese found on Chicago’s South Side

CHICAGO – Dusty mounds of petroleum coke are no longer in Chicago, but federal and city officials have discovered a potentially more dangerous kind of pollution while investigating the black piles that once towered above the city’s far South Side.

Air monitors posted around two storage terminals on the Calumet River in 2014 and 2015 detected alarming levels of manganese, the Chicago Tribune reported. The heavy metal is used in steelmaking and can permanently damage the nervous system and trigger anxiety, learning difficulties and memory loss.

Jackson Jr.’s lawyer seeks shorter supervision period

WASHINGTON – An attorney for Jesse Jackson Jr. is asking that the former Illinois congressman be allowed to end supervised release early.

Jackson, son the civil rights leader Rev. Jesse Jackson, was given a 2½-year prison sentence for spending $750,000 in campaign money on personal items. Attorney John Colette wrote in a court filing Friday that Jackson has now successfully completed about 18 months of supervised release, about half of what he was ordered to complete.

CHICAGO – A Chicago Fire Department official said a fire on the city’s South Side that killed a 7-month-old girl and a 2-year-old girl likely was caused by someone in the house using the stove to heat the building.

Commander Frank Velez said that foul play is not suspected in the fast-spreading fire that also left a 6-year-old boy in critical condition.

Parents, some linked to conservative organizations, formed a small but vocal opposition group.

“The school went about this in a way that ensures it will be narrow and divisive,” said Betsy Hart, who has two children enrolled. Hart, a senior writer at the conservative Heritage Foundation who says her school activism is separate from her day job, expects the parent group to continue pushing for more conservative voices at New Trier High.

Among its numerous and nuanced requests, the group wants to add research supporting voter identification laws to a session on voter suppression and ensure a panel on affirmative action includes contrasting views such as the suggestion that it’s detrimental for minorities.

Man who killed son pleads guilty to 2nd-degree murder

URBANA – A central Illinois man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his son.

Sixty-seven-year-old David Farrell of Urbana entered the guilty plea Friday in the death of 29-year-old Matthew Farrell. Authorities said the June 12 shooting occurred at the family home during a second angry encounter between the two men that day.

Champaign County Assistant State’s Attorney Scott Larson said he agreed to the guilty plea because two witnesses were prepared to testify that Matthew Farrell struck his father during an argument about three hours before the shooting. He said both men had been drinking.

Health care, Gorsuch on Congress’ agenda

WASHINGTON – Congress returns to Washington this week to confront dramatic decisions on health care and the Supreme Court that may help determine the course of Donald Trump’s presidency.

First, the president will have his say, in his maiden speech to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night. Majority Republicans in the House and Senate will be closely watching the prime-time address for guidance, marching orders or any specifics Trump might embrace on health care or taxes, areas where some of his preferences remain a mystery.

Congressional Republicans insist they are working closely with the new administration as they prepare to start taking votes on health legislation, with the moment finally upon them to make good on seven years of promises to repeal and replace former President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act. House Republicans hope to pass their legislation by early April and send it to the Senate, with action there also possible before Easter.

Republicans will be “keeping our promise to the American people,” House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said as he sent lawmakers home for the Presidents Day recess armed with informational packets to defend planned GOP changes to the health law.

But land mines await. The recess was dominated by raucous town halls where Republicans faced tough questions about their plans to replace the far-reaching law with a new system built around tax credits, health savings accounts and high risk pools. Important questions are unanswered, such as the overall cost and how many people will be covered. There’s also uncertainty about how to resolve divisions among states over Medicaid money.

The lack of clarity created anxiety among voters who peppered lawmakers from coast to coast with questions about what would become of their own health coverage and that of their friends and family. It’s forced Republicans to offer assurances that they don’t intend to take away the law and leave nothing in its place, even though some House conservatives favor doing just that.

“What I have said is repeal and replace and more recently I have defined that as repairing the ACA moving forward,” Rep. Leonard Lance, R-N.J., insisted to an overflow crowd in his politically divided district this past week. “I think we have a responsibility in Washington to try to make the system better.”

It remains to be seen whether the release of detailed legislation in the coming days will calm, or heighten, voters’ concerns. Details on the size of tax credits to help people buy insur-

With lawmakers set to return to the Capitol on Monday, it will become clearer whether the earful many got back home will affect their plans. GOP leaders are determined to move forward, reckoning that when confronted with the reality of voting on the party’s repeal and replace plan, Republicans will have no choice but to vote “yes.”

Many Republicans say that how they will handle health legislation will set the stage for the next big battle, over taxes. And that fight, many believe, will be even trickier than health care. Already, it has opened major rifts between House and Senate Republicans.

Senators also will be weighing the nomination of federal appeals Judge Neil Gorsuch, Trump’s pick for the Supreme Court. Hearings soon will get underway in the Senate Judiciary Committee; floor action is expected before Easter. Despite Gorsuch’s sterling credentials, Democrats are under pressure from their liberal supporters to oppose him, given voters’ disdain for Trump and the GOP’s refusal last year to allow even a hearing for Obama’s nominee for the high court vacancy, federal appeals Judge Merrick Garland.

Yet some Democrats are already predicting that one way or another, Gorsuch will be confirmed. Even if he doesn’t pick up the 60 votes he needs, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., could use a procedural gambit to eliminate Democrats’ ability to filibuster Gorsuch, an outcome that Trump has endorsed.

HARD WORK PAYS OFF

Lockport’s long trek to a championship tough but certainly satisfying

cherron@shawmedia.com LOCKPORT – George Brecheisen knows all too well about the hard work and effort that has gone into Lockport wrestlers claiming the school’s first championship in the sport Saturday at the IHSA Class 3A dual team finals in Bloomington.

After serving as an assistant coach for 26 years, working for most of that time with retired coach Joe Williams, the program goals for many years included just getting someone to place at state, having a state finalist and champion and capturing a team regional title.

While coach Josh Oster’s Porters capped a 29-0 season and assured themselves of a top-25 ranking in the nation after a 33-20 victory over perennial power Montini, the path for a program that didn’t win its first regional title until 2010 has been difficult, yet satisfying.

“When Joe and I started here, we didn’t have the numbers, but once you get a kid to qualify for state others in the room see how hard that kid’s working to get to that point,” Brecheisen said. “When you’re starting to build a winning tradition and teamwork, building a good practice room ends up resulting in multiple qualifiers and placers and now we have multiple state trophies. It’s just one thing after another and building and building.

“But it takes a lot of time and commitment by the wrestlers, their families and the coaching staff to do that. I was surprised at the beginning of this

We knew that we had the studs, but to fill it in with kids who were upper-level wrestlers, we knew that we had something and you could see it last year. The three-year progress has been unbelievable and neat to see.”

After assisting his coach for several seasons starting in 2004, Josh Oster took over the program in 2011-12, and the Porters made their first visit to dual team state, where they threw

a scare into eventual champion Sandburg in the quarterfinals.

Lockport has returned to state the past three seasons the competition, taking fourth in 2015, third last season and winning it all this year. The Porters won their dual meets by an average of nearly 40 points, which was impressive considering the tough schedule they wrestled.

Lockport won each of its duals by at least 10 points, which is a feat that has only been done one other time by a program in any class since 2000. That

was accomplished in 2015 by powerhouse Oak Park-River Forest, who beat the Porters in the semifinals before capturing their second of three straight state titles.

Matt Bartley, who has coached with the program since 2005, has been on several staffs in a variety of sports with other excellent coaches, so he understands all to well about just how difficult it is to pull it all together to capture a state championship.

Becky Pearl gained her 300th career win Friday at the Lewis Dome Invitational in Rosemont. The Flyers, who finished 3-2 in the tournament, topped Walsh, 6-4. Carolyn Nojiri tripled and singled and Emily Guske had two hits.

Earlier Friday, Lewis beat Ashland,

10-6. Nojiri and Carly Jaworski (Lemont) combined for four hits and seven RBIs. Dara Sanders pitched 4 1/3 innings of scoreless relief for the win. On Saturday, Findlay tied the game in the seventh, and scored two in the ninth for a 6-5 win over Lewis. Jaworski had two hits and two RBIs. Kaylee Prieto and Sanders added two hits each. Lainie Schweickert took the loss.

Also Saturday, Lewis fell to Wayne State, 8-0. Emily Guske and Nojiri had the Flyers’ only hits. In Sunday’s finale, Kendyl Strack and Jaworski combined for five hits and five RBIs in a 10-6 win over Lindenwood. Strack was 3 for 4 with three RBIs, Jaworski was 2 for 5 with two RBIs. Prieto, Carley Maupin (Peotone) and Sarah DeMasi (Lockport) had two hits. Pitchers Schweickert and Fossey combined for the win.

“We have had good coaches who have worked with the kids to get them ready for the state tournament, and Coach Williams led the staff and had the know-how to get kids to the next level,” Bartley said. “Coach Williams really did a phenomenal job of taking some risks and putting younger coaches in situations in the corners of mats that they may not have been ready for, but you either get the experience, or you’re never ready, so we’re thankful for him. Joe was really the heart of building this program.

“A lot of it has also had to do with Coach Oster having the involvement with Team Illinois and the Freestyle and Greco circuit for USA Wrestling in the offseason. When the kids get the opportunity to wrestle the best kids in the country and then you put a group of those kids back in the same room, only good things are going to happen from that. They’ll be better and more prepared to win state titles. And a deeper meaning to all of this is that it truly is a family.”

The Porters concluded their special season in impressive fashion against a Montini program that has won 13 state titles since 2000. Lockport’s win over the Broncos marked just the third time since their string of championships has begun that they lost in the dual team finals.

Lockport lost the first two matches to fall behind 7-0 but then won threestraight decisions to grab a 9-7 advantage. That stretch of success continued as the Porters recorded three consecutive falls to extend their advantage to 27-7 after six wins in a row.

The 33 points allowed was the most yielded by Montini at state since before its initial title in 2000. In the years since then, no one had won more than four straight matches against the Broncos and no squad had pinned them in three consecutive matches until Saturday.

Drake Rossi has assisted the Porters program for the past five years. He’s joined on the staff by several volunteers, including a number of Lockport alumni.

The program’s other coaches include Kevin Bialka (class of 2009), Doug Chesna (2000), Tony Garcia, David Mackey (2004), Jared McCarthy (2008),

Jameson Oster (2011), Trevor Proszek, Jim Ranney, Nate Roth (2002), Mike Tetlow (2009) and Josh Zimmerman.

Kevin Sealy, who also assists the program, provided the photos that accompany this story from the state finals.

“Yesterday was special and it was a long time coming for all of these coaches, and especially Josh,” Rossi said.

“We had third- and fourth-place finishes and those were great and we’ve had a few great teams before that, but this team was truly special and it was a true team effort. We opened up right away with good competition, and that kind of set our bar high. Tournaments like the

Cheesehead and Powerade humbled us a little, but we also were wrestling against the best kids in the country, and that paid off.

“Our kids work as hard as any team in the state, so they were ready to go.

We wrestled the top level of competition throughout the tournament and didn’t have an easy way through it. Marmion and Lincoln-Way West were great, and Montini obviously proved its way. We wrestled a lot of kids throughout the year, with probably 25 or 30 kids in a varsity match. It was hard to wrestle against the group of kids that we had.

They were something special.”

ROMEOVILLE – The Lewis men’s basketball team led only 35-33 at halftime Sunday afternoon at Neil Carey Arena but outscored Saint Joseph (Indiana), 43-26, in the second half en route to a 78-59 victory in the opening round of the Deaconess GLVC Championship Tournament.

The Flyers (17-12), the No. 7 seed in the tournament, advance to the quarterfinals. Saint Joseph’s, the 10th seed, closes its season 12-17.

Lewis’ Cristen Wilson scored 21 points on 10 of 14 shooting and grabbed nine rebounds.

Will boys basketball postseason seeds hold?

VIEWS Dick Goss The past three months have been quite a ride for boys basketball fans in the Joliet area.

Bolingbrook (24-1), Joliet West (233) and Joliet Central (21-5) are a combined 68-9. Remove Bolingbrook’s victories over West and Central and the Tigers’ victory over the Steelmen from the equation, and the three area heavyweights are 65-6.

No wonder all three have shown up in state rankings. Bolingbrook, in fact, was No. 1 until recently, when the Raiders suffered their only loss – to Lincoln-Way East.

When trying to assess how the Class 4A Lincoln-Way East Sectional might play out, the natural tendency is to assume No. 1 seed Bolingbrook will be in the first semifinal, probably against No. 4 Minooka, while No. 2 West and No. 3 Central will square off in the second semifinal.

Imagine, a Bolingbrook versus Joliet West rematch in the sectional final.

The postseason, however, is not about penciling in winners and forgetting about it. How many foresaw Lincoln-Way West’s run to second place in the state in Class 3A a year ago? The Warriors knocked off Hillcrest, Morgan Park and Peoria Manual in succession. At the end of February, Lincoln-Way West was not a likely conqueror of any of those three. Yet it beat them all.

Regionals will be played this week, with sectionals next week. Will the seeds hold? Will a Lincoln-Way West of 2016 show up this season?

Don’t know, but what I do know is we have some teams – Romeoville and Lincoln-Way East in 4A, Providence and Joliet Catholic in 3A, for example – that are capable of getting on that type of run.

CLASS 4A

Let’s take a look at each of the four regionals in the Lincoln-Way East Sectional.

At Plainfield North: Minooka (21-8), as the No. 4 seed, goes in as the favorite, with No. 5 West Aurora (19-8) the potential opponent in the regional final. However, Neuqua Valley (13-15) can be a dangerous opponent for Minooka in the regional semifinals, and if host Plainfield North (5-19) gets to the semifinal against West Aurora, that would not be a gimme for the Blackhawks.

Bolingbrook and West are the No. 1 and No. 2 seeds in the Class 4A Lincoln-Way East Sectional. tween Lincoln-Way Central (9-17) and Plainfield Central (7-19). Both have showed signs of improvement of late, and one of them will earn the right to challenge Joliet West in Tuesday’s semifinal.

Romeoville (15-11), the seventh seed, looms as the regional final opponent for West. The Spartans took the Tigers to the wire before dropping a 69-66 decision in late January, and they knocked off Joliet Central last week. The thing is, they first will have to beat Southwest Prairie adversary and 10th-seeded Oswego East (15-11) in Wednesday’s regional semifinal, and that’s no sure thing, either.

At Joliet Central: The Steelmen could see No. 6 Lincoln-Way East (19-10) in the regional final, and that’s a scary thought. The Griffins, who have good size to go against the smaller Steelmen, not only have knocked off Bolingbrook recently, they have been playing good basketball consistently.

Of course, East is not being handed a berth in the regional final, because if No. 11 Lockport (11-15)

gets past Plainfield South on Monday night, the Porters will be the Griffins’ regional semifinal foe. Granted, East beat Lockport rather handily last week for the second time this season, but the Porters are a team you do not want to have to beat three times.

At Sandburg: Lincoln-Way West (817) steps up to 4A this season and will try to recapture the postseason magic beginning with Monday night’s game against Yorkville. The Warriors, who still have defending Herald-News Player of the Year Marco Pettinato leading the way, would earn a shot at Bolingbrook in the first regional semifinal Tuesday with a victory.

The other bracket is interesting, as a battle between No. 8 Sandburg (13-13) and No. 9 Lemont (15-11) will be the second semifinal Tuesday night, with the winner the challenge, for Bolingbrook in the regional final.

The home floor may be worth something to Sandburg, but PJ Pipes and Lemont can get it done. Or, maybe I’m rooting for a Lemont-Bolingbrook regional final, so we can see Pipes go against all that Raiders talent.

CLASS 3A At Rich South: Providence (12-14),

the No. 3 seed in the sub-sectional, must get past an athletic team in No. 6 Rich East (10-13) to get a shot at playing in the regional final Friday, presumably against Rich South (1311).

The Stars are decent, but not better than a lot of the competition the Celtics have played tough against during the season.

Rich East and Rich South both finished 4-5 in the Southland Conference, where Bloom was 9-0 and Crete-Monee 7-2.

At Joliet Catholic: The Hilltoppers (12-14), the No. 4 seed in the same sub-sectional, would like to get a shot at No. 1 seed Hillcrest (17-7) in the regional final on their home floor.

First, however, JCA has the matter of taking care of business in Wednesday’s semifinal against No. 5 Oak Forest (13-12). That one, on paper, appears it could be tight.

NASCAR: DAYTONA 500

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Decked in Monster gear, chugging a tall boy of the energy drink as he was flanked by scantily clad models, Kurt Busch celebrated the biggest win of his racing career.

It was Monster Madness!

Busch used a last-lap pass to win the crash-filled Daytona 500 on Sunday in the opening race of Monster Energy’s new role as title sponsor of NASCAR’s top series. Busch, it just so happens, also is sponsored by Monster, and the company has strongly stood by him through his rocky career.

So this was a victory of redemption for Busch, who was suspended by NASCAR two days before the 2015 Daytona 500 for his off-track behavior, and for Monster, which has promised to pump new life into NASCAR’s sagging sport.

“I’ve had a lot of people that have believed in me through the years, a lot of people that have supported me,” Busch said.

Add NFL star Rob Gronkowski to Busch’s bandwagon, too.

Gronkowski celebrated with Busch and the Monster girls in victory lane and raved about the win.

“Monster’s the best!” Gronk shouted to The Associated Press. “We picked Kurt to win and he won ‘cause he’s a Monster guy. It was awesome. ... I love being part of Monster, love being here with Monster. Kurt did an awesome job today. Monster killed that race.”

Gronk and Busch likely will celebrate late into the night, well after the banged-up No. 41 Ford begins its trek back to North Carolina.

“The more that becomes unpredictable about Daytona, the more it becomes predictable to predict unpredictability,” Busch said. “This car’s completely thrashed. There’s not a straight panel on it. The strategy today, who knew what to pit when, what segments were what. Everybody’s wrecking as soon as we’re done with the second segment.

“The more that I’ve run this race, the more that I just throw caution to the wind, let it rip and just elbows out.

That’s what we did.”

It wasn’t NASCAR’s finest moment, however, as multiple accidents pared the field and had a mismatched group of drivers racing for the win at the end.

It appeared to be pole-sitter Chase Elliott’s race to lose, then he ran out of gas. So did Kyle Larson, Martin Truex Jr., Paul Menard and Kasey Kahne.

As they all slipped off the pace, Busch sailed through for his first career Daytona 500 victory in 16 tries.

“I ran this [darn] race [17] years and couldn’t win it, so finally won it as an owner,” Stewart said. “It’s probably the most patient race I’ve ever watched Kurt Busch run. He definitely deserved that one for sure.”

It was a crushing defeat for Elliott, who is developing a reputation as a driver unable to immedicably digest defeat. He left the track without comment in a car driven by his father, Hall of Famer Bill Elliott.

Ryan Blaney finished second in a Ford. AJ Allmendinger was third in a Chevrolet, and Aric Almirola was fourth for Richard Petty Motorsports.

The win was a huge boost for Ford, which lured Stewart-Haas Racing away from Chevrolet this season and celebrated the coup with its second Daytona 500 victory in three years. Joey Logano won in a Ford in 2015.

“What a great win to start off a partnership,” said Raj Nair, Ford’s chief technical officer. “We were so fast. We knew we had a good chance and Kurt

hung in there after getting caught up in that crash. He didn’t give up.”

The first points race of the Monster era was run under a new format that split the 500 miles into three stages.

Kyle Busch won the first stage, Kevin Harvick won the second stage and neither was a contender for the win.

NASCAR also this year passed a rule that gave teams only five minutes to repair any damage on their cars or they were forced to retire.

But the race was slowed by wreck after wreck after wreck, including a 17-car accident at the start of the final stage that ended the race for seven-time and reigning series champion Jimmie Johnson and Danica Patrick. It was a particularly rough incident for Patrick and her Stewart-Haas Racing team, which had all four of its cars collected in the accident.

“Just seems like that could have been avoided and was uncalled for,” Johnson said of the aggressive racing behind him that triggered the accident.

Kurt Busch was able to continue, but most of the top contenders found themselves on the outside looking in.

“Some years I think we have it where we run here and nobody wrecks and it’s great racing,” said Brad Keselowski,

“and then you have other years like this where everybody wrecks all the time.”

Roughly two hours before the race, NASCAR chairman Brian France issued drivers a stern warning about blocking.

France rarely wades into competition matters, especially in public, but stepped to the microphone to admonish the drivers. The Truck Series and Xfinity Series races were sloppy wreck-fests, and France hardly wanted the same spectacle for his Super Bowl.

“This is our biggest event,” France told the packed drivers meeting. “What I don’t normally do, and I’m going to do this today, is bring up a competition issue. This is for the drivers. And what I want you to think about. We realize blocking is part of racing. We understand that. We accept that.

“Do not look for NASCAR ... when you block somebody out there. It causes almost all the big incidents. Do not look for NASCAR ... you better hope there’s a Good Samaritan behind you who is going to accept that block, because they have that lane and the right to it. And I don’t often make those statements.”

Blocking or not, the race was a mess of tangled sheet metal and wrecked cars.

World Series ‘Game 8’ not quite the same

Cubs, Indians play to tie in first meeting since Game 7 of Series

bmiles@dailyherald.com MESA, Ariz. – The running joke around Cubs camp this past weekend was that Game 8 of the World Series happened Sunday.

The Cleveland Indians traveled across the Valley of the Sun to meet the Cubs at Sloan Park. These two teams previously met Nov. 2 under more serious circumstances – serious as in Game 7 of the World Series.

You might remember the Cubs rallied from a three-games-to-one deficit and recovered from a late-inning disaster at Progressive Field in Cleveland to win their first World Series since 1908.

In mock seriousness, Cubs manager Joe Maddon would not discuss “Game 8” on Saturday, saying the Cubs had a pair of split-squad games to play.

The embargo was lifted Sunday.

“It’s here; it’s upon us,” Maddon said. “The lineups are a little bit different than at the end of the season. Really, it’s just another spring training game.”

That it was.

The game ended in a 1-1 tie.

With the World Series having gone until Nov. 2, the Cubs and Indians found themselves back at work in the blink of an eye.

“It’s such a fast winter, man,” Maddon said. “It’s fast and furious. Sitting in the dugout (Saturday), kind of awkward because you played late, but still you go through that spring training moment where you’ve got to get your mind working a method that you normally utilize. I was talking to Jonesy (thirdbase coach Gary Jones) about it because when I used to coach third base, you’d get to spring training and it was like you never coached third base before.

“It’s just weird how we react. That’s why spring training, all the little things

with the Angels. I didn’t do that with the Rays. I probably will a couple years from now. But for right now, I’m pretty good. I prefer reruns – of TV shows.”

“First memory, groundball to third,” he said of the final play of Game 7, the grounder to Kris Bryant. “That’s about it. It really boils down to that. Down 3-1 (in games) was pretty significant. I think KB’s home run to left-center (in Game 5) was large. The home run to left-center, groundball to third probably are the two things.”

The Cubs are out to defend their title this season. They won last year with a roster full of young players.

Anisimov scores late to lift surging Blackhawks past Blues

CHICAGO – Artem Anisimov scored with 5:20 left in the third period to lift the Blackhawks over the St. Louis Blues, 4-2, on Sunday night for their fourth straight win and ninth in their past 10.

Anisimov beat Jake Allen on the glove side from the right edge of the crease for his 22nd goal after taking a pinpoint cross-ice pass from linemate Artemi Panarin. Tanner Kero added an empty-netter with 2.6 seconds left.

Fowler finally makes it look easy at Honda Classic: At Palm Beach Gardens, Fla.,

Rickie Fowler made it interesting Sunday for as long as it took him to make two big putts to pull away in the Honda Classic.

Staked to a four-shot lead, Fowler hit one putt into a sprinkler hole, hit a tee shot into the water and watched a big lead shrink to one over Gary Woodland early on the back nine. Fowler answered with consecutive birdie putts of 40 and 25 feet and closed with a 1-over 71 for a four-shot victory.

Fowler effectively ended it with a shot over the water to the 3 feet that stretched his lead to five shots with two holes to play. Woodland appeared to have second place wrapped up until he three-putted the 17th, and then tried to lay up on the par-5 18th and came up short into the water. He closed with another bogey for a 69. He had to share second place – the difference of $128,000 – with Morgan Hoffmann, who missed a 4-foot birdie putt on the 18th.

Fowler even got into the act when it no longer mattered. He hit his tee shot into the water on the 17th hole and made bogey, then hit a wedge into the bunker on the 18th and closed with another bogey to finish at 12-under 268.

All that mattered was the trophy, the fourth of his PGA Tour career.

Fowler jokingly referred to it as a “small collection” on Saturday evening, though it was important. He had gone 13 months and 25 starts worldwide without a victory as everyone around him was winning multiple times.

It was his first PGA Tour victory since the Deutsche Bank Championship in September 2015.

LINCOLN, Neb. – Malcolm Hill scored 19 points, and Illinois went on a 3-point shooting spree in the second half in a 73-57 victory over Nebraska on Sunday.

Tracy Abrams added 13 points, and Maverick Morgan had 12 for the Illini (17-12, 7-9), who won their third straight road game and for the fourth time in five games overall.

Tai Webster had 17 points, eight rebounds and five assists to lead the Cornhuskers (12-16, 6-10).

The Illini, who came into the game 12th in the Big Ten in 3-point shooting in conference games (32.9 percent) made seven of their first eight 3s of the second half to go up 61-44 with 9:15 to play. They finished 13 of 26 from beyond the arc.

The Huskers are last in the Big Ten in 3-point defense in conference games (41.3 percent).

Hill scored 14 of his 19 points after half. He and Abrams each made four 3-pointers.

Illinois led, 30-28, at half, and Abrams and Hill hit a couple 3s during a 10-3 spurt that gave the Illini a seven-point lead. Jalen Coleman-Lands’ 3 pushed the lead to 47-37 with 13:41 to play, and the Huskers never got closer.

The Illini continued to play strong defense, holding the Huskers to 37.5-percent shooting from the field, 26.7 percent on 3s and their second-lowest point total. In the previous six games, Illinois opponents were shooting 39.7 percent overall, 32.5 percent on 3s and averaging 64.2 points.

The Illini won a third straight Big Ten game for the first time since the 2014-15 season and are in sole possession of ninth place. The Illini need to finish 10th or higher to avoid a play-in game in the conference tournament.

CHANNAHON – The Channahon police department’s K-9, Hutch, will receive a bullet- and stabprotective vest thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s Inc. K-9 Hutch’s vest is sponsored by an anonymous donor and will be embroidered with the sentiment, “This gift of protection provided by Vested Interest in K9s Inc.” Delivery is expected within eight to 10 weeks.

Vested Interest in K9s Inc. is a 501c (3) charity located in East Taunton, Massachusetts, whose mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States.

The nonprofit was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially lifesaving body armor for their fourlegged K9 officers. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s Inc. has provided more than 2,300 vests in 50 states, through private and corporate donations, at a cost of more than 1.9 million dollars.

All vests are custom made in the USA by Armor Express in Central Lake, Michigan.

The program is open to dogs actively employed in the U.S. with law enforcement or related agencies who are certified and at least 20 months of age. New K-9 graduates, as well as K-9s with

Fibrates may be better than statins Dear Doctor: My friends and I are all getting older, and I’ve noticed that some of them are on statins to lower their cholesterol. My doctor chose a fibrate for me, Lopid (gemfibrozil). What’s the difference between statins and fibrates, and what’s special about Lopid?

Dear Reader: Statins and fibrates act in fundamentally different ways. Statins, more officially known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, target cholesterol in the bloodstream, most of which comes from the liver, not from foods that we eat. They work by binding to the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which the liver needs to form cholesterol.

Statins act in another way as well. Because they make cholesterol levels fall within the liver, the liver then increases production of a substance, or receptor, that takes LDL, the so-called “bad” cholesterol, from the bloodstream and shepherds it back into the liver. There, it is eventually removed via the bile. Because we make more cholesterol at night, statins are given before bedtime.

Fibrates, which include gemfibrozil (Lopid) and fenofibrate, target triglycerides in the bloodstream. They work by decreasing the liver’s release of triglycerides and by increasing the production of lipoprotein lipase, which breaks down triglycerides. In addition, fibrates increase the formation of HDL, the so-called “good” cholesterol; they have only minor effects in reducing LDL. Unlike statins, fibrates should be taken before eating.

Statins have undeniably shown benefits in decreasing the risk of both heart attacks and strokes; fibrates seem to have a more narrow benefit. In 2010, a Lancet review analysis of 18 studies involving more than 45,000 patients showed a 13 percent decrease in heart attacks and angina among people who were taking fibrates, but no reduction in stroke risk, no decrease in overall death rates and no decrease in death rates from

A 1987 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine also showed mixed results. It followed more than 4,000 middle-aged men with elevated triglyceride levels for five years. At the start of the study, one group began using gemfibrozil, and the other group began taking a placebo. At the end of the study, the group that took gemfibrozil had a 34 percent decrease in the risk of coronary heart disease, but there was no difference in the death rate.

Overall, statins appear to have greater benefit than fibrates in decreasing the risk of both heart attacks and strokes. That’s not to say fibrates aren’t the right choice for some people, however. Significant elevation of triglycerides, greater than 400, can cause inflammation of the pancreas, so people with very elevated triglyceride levels would benefit from a fibrate medication. So too might those with elevated triglycerides and normal LDL cholesterols.

Before you suggest combining a statin and a fibrate for added benefit, be aware that the combination can increase the risk of muscle aches and possible muscle breakdown. On occasion, I will prescribe this combination to my patients with very elevated triglycerides, but I monitor them carefully for any signs of muscular problems or breakdown. Also in such cases, I try to lower the statin dose to decrease the chance of muscular symptoms.
