No student is a stranger to the stress of back-to-school chaos. Luckily, there are plenty of hacks and helpful tools online or at IVCC to ease your college experience.
Campus Question
Jane Stevenor, a professional writing tutor, described the TWC as a low-stress place for students to get the academic support they need. “It’s a welcoming space,” she said.If tutoring isn’t for you, there are other ways to stay on top of your classes.
Think about how productive you are during certain times of day. Are you a night owl? Or do you write best in the morning? Are you dog tired after a day of work? If so, it’s probably best to finish your essay before starting your shift—even if the deadline is midnight and you get off at 10. Plan ahead know yourself and your own limits. Set attainable goals, but leave room for rest; assignments are important, but sleep is a priority, too.

Let’s say you zone out in chem class, and before you know it, the whiteboard is covered in Greek letters, complex formulas, and numbers that seemingly came from nowhere.Yeah—been there, done that. Now you’re left with a sheet of unbalanced equations and a sinking dread that you’ve picked the wrong major. Before you panic (like I did), follow the signs to the Tutoring and Writing Center (TWC) in A-201, and you’ll be right where you need to be.
The TWC offers free assistance with any subject, including essay writing.Students can schedule appointments with tutors via Accudemia on their Blackboard accounts. Walk-ins are welcome, and zoom sessions are also available.
The National Sleep Foundation has found that 70 to 96 percent of college students sleep less than eight hours on week nights—and that more than half sleep less than seven.Lack of sleep can lead to stress, a weakened immune system, weight gain, cloudy thinking, and even an increased risk of depression. Those symptoms can impair your college experience, especially around final exams. To avoid them, stick to a regular night time routine. Something as simple as brushing your teeth before bed can signal to your brain that it’s time to sleep. Strive for eight hours each night, and give yourself a few days to sleep in. Shifting from summer vacation to the fall semester can be a big change, but it doesn’t have to be a hardMyone.advice? Make friends, make a schedule and make time for yourself.College is the place to learn— not just how to answer those pesky chem questions, but how to balance work, stress, sleep, and life.

A good rule of thumb is to make friends with the classmates on your left or right. I get it it’s tough at first to break the ice. But knowing your peers will likely create a more comfortable environment for learning material, asking questions and offering help. Speaking with your professor is another way to solidify your understanding of a class. Show you care about school, and your professor is more apt to care about you as a student.Remember, you pay your instructor to teach you—which includes the time they set aside for o ce hours. So make the most of your money! Ask questions if you’re unsure. Get to know your teacher. Invest in a good connection—even if it’s just stopping by their door for a second at a time. Relationships with your professor can also be a smooth segway for a recommedation letter later on.
Setting up for a semester means creating a study schedule that works for you. The bookstore sells planners, but you can design them on websites like Canva or Padlet for free. Whether you budget or buy the real thing, what matters is how you manage your time.

As fall approaches, people will slowly migrate into their homes to prepare for winter. This is when most people settle down and turn on a show or movie in the comfort of their warm homes. One choice Dune. People who have seen Dune know that there is potential in the motion picture reincarnation of the book. ust like Star Wars casts Luke Skywalker as the main protagonist, Dune has Paul Atreides. The film, much like Star Wars, takes place in space and surround ing planets. Dune focuses heavily on breath-taking picture presentation much like Star Wars and has the potential to grasp any viewer tugging them into the realm of Dune. There is a reason Rot ten Tomatoes gave the movie an 88 percent and IMDd gave it an 8 10. This stunning film brings to life the beauty of 21st century cinematography and special effects. Combine this with an interesting plot and great character development, and you see why IMDd called it an amazing cinematic experience.Ratherthan rewatch ing Dumb and Dumber because your boyfriend is stuck in the mind of a 1 -year-old, take control of your night and request you both go on an adventure to ArrakisIfyou are one of those people who curls up in their favorite position with Ruffus and watches a flick, then turn on Dune and prepare for a new and improved SciFi universe we all love.

Kate Bush, an artpop musician whose heyday ended, like, over 25 years ago and who received relatively little airplay in the U.S. suddenly had her 1985 song Running Up That Hill go mondo huge. Then Metallica’s 1986 Master of Puppets started gaining in popularity as well. Unless you’ve been living under, like, a rock or something, I’m sure you’re aware that this is due to their prominent roles in the storyline of the latest season of Stranger Things For those like myself who grew up in the 80s, the show has been a veritable smorgasbord of nostalgia D D and the Satanic panic sur rounding it , roller rinks, skateboard ing, classic toys like Star Wars and Masters of the Universe, ugly but rugged bicycles, ugly but rugged cars in season 4 I even saw the light blue 19 5 Ford Maverick my mother owned when I was a child , wood paneling, pervasive chain smoking, video arcades, talking with friends by walk ie-talkie, Valspeak and other 80s slang, true-to-the-era hair styles and fashion as opposed to the typical exaggerated presentation the 80s gets and this season, characters whose appearances are clearly modeled on Allison Reynolds from The Breakfast Club Eden Bingham , Samantha Baker from Sixteen Candles Vickie , and guitar god Eddie Van Halen Eddie Munson . And I will eat my hat if Erica Sinclair isn’t based on Dee Thomas from What’s Happening . And of course, there’s the choice tunage. From the be ginning the show has used period music quite liberally, and often in ways that significantly enhanced the narrative— think of the uses of Peter Gabriel’s somber cover of David Bowie’s Heroes, Foreigner’s Cold as Ice, and the comical ly frequent use of Musical outh’s Pass the Dutchie when loveable stoner Argyle is on screen.

6 arts IV LEADERSEPTEMBER 1, 2022 “Top Gun: Maverick” is the biggest movie of the summer. According to Box O ce Mo o, it’s made over a billion dollars worldwide and is outperforming other massive blockbusters such as “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness, urassic World Dominion, and Minions The Rise of Gru.” The long-awaited sequel is a hit with critics and audiences alike. On Rotten Tomatoes, the movie is sitting at 96 percent from critics and 99 percent from fans. How did the filmmakers man age to make a sequel loved by all ages, despite the original Top Gun coming out 36 years ago Many recent movies rely heav ily on nostalgia. The newer Star Wars, urassic World, and Ghost busters movies are prime examples of this. In those movies, storylines are reused, characters return for little to no reason (and/or new characters are photocopies of original ones , settings are revisited, music is recycled, and entire sequences are sometimes repeated. Whenever I see a new movie in one of my favorite franchis es, I wonder Do these nostalgic elements blind me to the fact that this isn’t a good movie Would I en oy this movie if I hadn’t grown up watching the previous installments Going into “Top Gun: Maverick, I wondered if I would en oy it. I knew the filmmakers wouldn’t be able to squeeze any nostalgia out of me.Ididn’t grow up watching the original Top Gun. In fact, the first time I watched it was a week before I saw the sequel. After seeing the movie, I can say that Top Gun Maverick does utilize some of those nostalgic elements I mentioned earlier. The movie references and repeats some of the most iconic aspects of its predecessor.
Thankfully, they decided not to raise Goose from the dead in Top Gun Maverick. Instead, they focus on the relationship between Maverick and Goose’s son, nick namedRoosterRooster.had to grow up with out a father, and he blames Mav erick. You can see how this might spawn personal tension and some very powerful scenes.

You can still catch “Top Gun: Maverick in many theaters now, three months after its release. If you haven’t seen the movie yet, I would highly recommend doing so.
TOP GUN: MAVERICK
My favorite aspect of the first movie was the friendship between Maverick and Goose. If you’ve seen the original movie, you know that relationship couldn’t be continued in a sequel.
I truly hope the success of Top Gun Maverick makes Hollywood studios realize that audiences don’t ust want to see the things they remember or watered-down versions of those things—they also want to see a compelling story with developed characters and powerful themes.
Tom Cruise returns to the screen for “Top Gun: Maverick,” the long-awaited sequel to the original movie. The movie creators do not rely on nostalgia alone to attrack audiences and critics to the new movie.
If “Top Gun: Maverick” took a page out of the most recent Star Wars movie’s book, Goose would appear out of nowhere and a character would remark, Somehow, Goose returned, with no further explanation.
The filmmakers could’ve been lazy. Of course, I was kidding earlier about bringing back Goose, but they could’ve tried replicating the Maverick/Goose relationship with copycat characters, for instance. Instead, they built upon the former relationship, and they dealt with the ramifications of Goose’s death in a meaningful way.
OvercomingnostalgiaHollywood’sproblem
The opening credits sequence is almost an exact recreation of the one from the first movie, right down to Kenny Loggins’ Danger Zone playing in the background. In another scene, characters play football on the beach, mirroring the volleyball scene from the first movie. However, in my opinion, the movie would still be en oyable without those nostalgic elements (and I know this is true for me because those elements didn’t even spark any nostalgia in me . Instead of solely banking on nostalgia to entertain audiences, the filmmakers behind Top Gun Maverick crafted a genuinely great movie that anyone can en oy. Not only does it include aw-dropping aerial stunts, but there are also genuine emotional stakes woven throughout the movie.

IV Leader photo SET UP Freshman Erica Antle, a La Salle-Peru Township High School graduate, sets the ball to sophomore Sophie Harris during an Aug. 25 match vs. Joliet Junior College in the IVCC gymnasium. The Eagles dropped the match.
The Bulls should benefit from Illinois product Ayo Dosunmu entering his second year after being named to all rookie 2nd team along with a hopefully healthy Lonzo Ball. In addition, Patrick Williams worked out all off-season with the likes of teammate Demar Derozen and LA Clippers star Paul George. These improvement should make the 44.5 win total stated by ESPN.com an easy over.
The Chicago Bulls 202223 schedule was released recently, and there are some key dates for fans to note. Kicking the season off right away they face last year’s No. 1 seed and Eastern conference hopefuls the Miami Heat on Oct. 18 and it does not get easier. They go on to face the surprising Cleveland Cavaliers followed by the Eastern Conference champions BostonOtherCeltics.important dates include Nov. 23 for the first of four against division rival and playoff rematch Milwaukee Bucks and Dec. 2, when the Bulls face off against the defending champions Golden State Warriors.Animportant note, after a lackluster three nationally televised games and a few flexes here and there last season, the Bulls have at least 14 nationally televised basketball games in the upcoming season, according to NBA.com.
The Eagles volleyball team has started the season 1-5 as of press time. The team has only one sophomore — Putnam County’s Sophie Harris — on the roster as Coach Erin Polte rebuilds the team that graduated several players from last season. Thus far in the season, Harris and freshman Ella Sibert from Woodland High School lead the team in kills with 39 and 42, respectively.Freshman Erica Antle, the team’s setter, leads in assists. Antle and freshman Grace Landers lead the team in service aces. Other players on the roster include Payton Giordano, Zofia Uzella, Brea Konwinski, Taylor Wetzel, Holly Shriber, Lexie Marquez, Libby Boyles, and Cassidy Antle. The Eagles picked up a win in their opening contest on Aug. 19 vs. Mesabi Range in an opening weekend tournament in Rockford.
