“Alien” terrorized the crew of the USCSS Nostromo mid-journey back to Earth, the blue planet was also invaded by threatening life-forms. “Alien: Earth,” the new prequel series premiering Tuesday, Aug. 12, on FX and Hulu, explores the response to a mysterious ship’s crash landing into Prodigy City.

In the year 2120, the world is reigned over by a handful of corporations that crave constant technological advancement. One of them, Prodigy Corporation, is responsible for the latest leap in human-tech fusion. Cyborgs and synthetics already populate Earth and live among humans, but Prodigy is ready to unleash their prototype hybrids — immortal humanoid robots uploaded with a real human’s consciousness — into the world when the crash requires a special team to execute a recovery mission.

Wendy, portrayed by Sydney Chandler (“Sugar”), is the first hybrid child of Prodigy CEO Boy Kavalier (Samuel Blenkin, “Mary & George”). The first class of hybrids, nicknamed “The Lost Boys” by Kavalier, was made possible with the contributions of terminally ill children who agreed to donate their consciousness to the cause, a bleak picture of life in Earth’s corporate era. Kavalier’s right-hand man, Atom Eins (Adrian Edmondson, “3 Body Problem”), serves to deliver his boss’s desires, no matter the human cost.

“Alien: Earth” also stars Timothy Olyphant (“Justified: City Primeval”) as Wendy’s synthetic trainer Kirsh and Alex Lawther (“Andor”) and Diem Camille (“The Wheel of Time”) as human soldiers CJ and Siberian. Essie Davis (“The Narrow Road to the Deep North”) stars as Dame Silvia, Wendy’s human mother figure. David Rysdahl (“Fargo”) is Dame’s husband, Arthur Silvia, who develops conflicted feelings about his participation in the creation of the hybrids.

Portraying the synthetics and cyborgs are Adarsh Gourav (“Guns & Gulaabs”) as Slightly, Kit Young (“Shadow and Bone”) as Tootles, Babou Ceesay (“We Hunt Together”) as Morrow, Jonathan Ajayi (“Vigil”) as Smee, Erana James (“The Wilds”) as Curly and Lily Newmark (“A Gentleman in Moscow”) as Nibs. You might have caught more than a few references to “Peter Pan,” there. The series invokes the characters from the children’s story, but whether “Alien: Earth” holds happy endings for Kavalier’s lost boys remains to be seen. Under the guise of a recovery mission to pull any living crew members from the ship’s

wreckage, the humanoid soldiers are sent into the vessel to do Kavalier’s dirty work. As a voice-over states in the series’ official trailer, five life-forms were collected by the crashed ship on its extraterrestrial ventures, and it is unknown how dangerous those creatures are. What is clear is that Kavalier wants them. Wendy steps up to lead the mission on behalf of herself and Kavalier’s synthetics, saying, “We can do it. We’re fast. We’re strong. We don’t break.”

The four other corporations that make up the world’s governing powers — WeylandYutani, Lynch, Dynamic and Threshold — are equally ruthless as Prodigy in their quest for the technology of the future. It was a Weyland-Yutani ship that crashed in Prodigy City, leaving a mystery surrounding the conditions that led to the disaster. It could have been planned, the result of an emergency or just the wrong corners being cut.

As “Alien: Earth” showrunner Noah Hawley, who also helmed the TV adaptation and

continuation of the 1996 Coen brothers film “Fargo,” told Entertainment Weekly: “If we just extrapolate where we are now, it’s driven much more by corporations than democracies. It’s very much wrapped up in a competition for technological superiority. The nature of power is, ‘In the end, there can be only one.’ So we’re in the middle of a battle on that level for who has the power in the human race.”

Hawley also spoke to Vanity Fair about working on the series in the midst of a global debate over the ethics of artificial intelligence, saying, “In the last 18 months, it’s become the issue of the moment. I think we’re all trying to figure it out: Can you trust it? Can you talk to it? Why is it lying to me?”

Though the world of “Alien: Earth” has obviously exceeded the length of this debate as humans walk side-by-side with androids, the question of trust remains. However, now the motives of humans are up for interrogation in the complex world of the series, ruled by corporations.

The lead hybrid in “Alien: Earth,” Wendy, has the donated consciousness of a child. That innocence is at odds with the militarized capitalist objective of creating and training the hybrids to be soldiers. In a world with so much darkness — corporate overlords, vicious extraterrestrial creatures, a volatile climate — where does the light get in? Does humanity’s torch deserve to stay lit at all if this is what’s become of Earth?

Torn between the evils of humans, aliens and technology, Wendy and her child-like intuition may be the closest thing to the way forward that this world has.

Don’t miss the premiere of “Alien: Earth” when it lands Tuesday, Aug. 12, on FX and Hulu.

Hard to kill Father, daughter get second chance in ‘Butterfly’

When it comes to storytelling, some tales quite simply lend themselves better to the screen. Often the best films and TV shows are based in preexisting visual media, as series such as AMC’s “The Walking Dead,” Prime Video’s “The Boys” and Netflix’s “Jessica Jones” can attest. But it takes more than a simple storyboard to guarantee television success — especially in a world saturated with top-tier content across cable, streaming services and more theatrical cinema outlets.

Yes, in order to acquire and maintain a loyal fan base, a story must have heart — something Prime Video is counting on to drive its newest action thriller “Butterfly” into homes across North America when it lands on the streamer this summer.

Premiering Wednesday, Aug. 13, on the Amazon-owned platform, “Butterfly” is a six-episode series based on the Boom! Studios graphic novel series of the same name written by Arash Amel and Marguerite Bennett and illustrated by Antonio Fuso and Stefano Simeone. Delving deep into the complex nature of parent-child relationships and the intricacies tied to personal identity, “Butterfly” stars Daniel Dae Kim (“Hawaii Five-0”) — in his first leading television role — and Reina Hardesty (“It’s What’s Inside,” 2024) as two intelligence agents whose paths cross when they uncover their shared past.

“‘Butterfly’ is a character-driven spy thriller that explores complex family dynamics within the treacherous world of global espionage,” reads the official description as provided by Amazon Studios. “It’s centered on David Jung (Kim), an enigmatic, highly unpredictable former U.S. intelligence operative living in South Korea, whose life is blown to pieces when the consequences of an impossible decision from his past come back to haunt him, and he finds himself pursued by Rebecca (Hardesty), a deadly, sociopathic young agent assigned to kill him, and Caddis, the sinister spy organization she works for.”

When, per the trailer, David acknowledges that he faked his own death and led Rebecca to believe him dead for the past 20 years, the fatherdaughter duo must face the impact of David’s past decisions and try to heal their strained relationship while also outrunning Juno (Piper Perabo, “Coyote Ugly,” 2000), a “brilliant, formidable, Machiavellian woman” (per Variety) who was once a successful lawyer before she came “to the conclusion that she needs power and money to get anything done in this world.” Now a fierce, protective mother and the high-powered CEO of an intelligence agency, Juno “will often tamp down [her vulnerabilities] when they conflict with her goals.”

Also, not unlike David, Juno is in the process of trying to repair a fractured relationship with her own child, Oliver, played by “Serpent Queen” and “Rivals” actor Louis Landau.

The series adaptation comes from showrunner Ken Woodruff, who previously worked on “Gotham,” “La Brea” and “The Mentalist” among other projects, and Korean American author Steph Cha, who wrote the tense 2019 sociopolitical drama “Your House Will Pay: A Novel,” set during the 1992 human rights riots in Los Angeles. And although “Butterfly” is based primarily in South Korea rather than stateside, like her novel, Cha’s respected commentary on race politics and deep interpersonal relations remains at the heart of the series and its production.

“‘Butterfly’ is the realization of a longtime dream to bring together American and Korean storytellers and create a show that bridges two cultures that I love deeply,” Kim said in a press statement for Amazon. “I couldn’t be happier with the creative team we’ve assembled, both in front of and behind the camera, and I’m grateful to Ken Woodruff, BOOM! Studios, 3AD, Amazon and everyone else who helped bring it to life.”

Additional writing for the series is provided by “NCIS: Los Angeles” writer and producer Dave Kalstein, “13 Reasons Why” writer and producer Diana Son, “Person of Interest” writer and producer Denise Thé and playwright Sung Rno, whose credits currently list three short films, including 2021’s “Sophocles in Staten Island” about a Filipino American family who are quarantined and homeschooled by their strict and overbearing father during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Releasing all six episodes on the show’s premiere, “Butterfly” also stars Kim Ji-hoon (“Jang Bo Ri Is Here”), Kim Tae-hee (“Jang Ok-jung, Living By Love”), Lee Il-hwa (“Good Manager”), Sung Dong-il (“It’s Okay, That’s Love”), Sean Dulake (“Athena: Goddess of War”), Seoyeon Jang (“Good Partner”) and SAG Award-nominated actor Charles Parnell (“Barry”) as Sen. George Dawson.

Series direction is led by Kitao Sakurai (“The Eric Andre Show”), who directed the first two episodes of the series.

Don’t miss the opportunity to pit nature against nurture when worlds collide in “Butterfly,” coming to Prime Video Wednesday, Aug. 13, with all six episodes.

Start your engine and buckle up for bold bites ahead of an all-new episode of “The Great Food Truck Race,” airing Sunday, Aug. 10, on Food Network.

Led by host Tyler Florence (“Worst Cooks in America”), Season 18 of “The Great Food Truck Race” — which began last week on Aug. 3 — follows nine competing trucks as they “road trip up the Atlantic coast in pursuit of food truck glory and a $50,000 grand prize,” (per Food Network).

Each week, these food truck pros and talented rookies tackle challenges and obstacles at each and every stop, all while trying to outsell their competition. The team with the lowest profit is sent home,

while those remaining will go head-to-head for the grand prize.

Season 18 began down in Savannah, Ga., where host Florence welcomed the trucks — Burger Walla, Cooking with Que, Eat My Biscuits, Fat Kid Food Co., G’s Cheesesteaks, Good Fortune Company, Nishaan, Rising Tiger and Stop Drop N Roll — to the starting line of an intense eight-city race. These chefson-wheels faced their first challenge from none other than the viral baseball sensation, the Savannah Bananas — and yes, their challenge was banana-themed. After testing their creativity, skill and ability to handle the heat, the teams launched into a high-stakes sales day, ending with the first elimination of the season and a shocking surprise.

This week, the trucks roll into Charleston, S.C., as Chef Kardea Brown (“Dinner Takes All”) dishes out a Gullah Geechee challenge, while Chef Rodney Scott (“BBQ Brawl”) cranks up the heat with a barbecue battle worthy of a true pitmaster.

The network praised the show’s continued success and the excitement surrounding this season.

WHAT’S NEW ON ACORN TV “Irish Blood” – Season 1

Alicia Silverstone (“Batman & Robin,” 1997) returns to the screen in “Irish Blood,” a tense six-episode mystery-thriller premiering Monday, Aug. 11, on Acorn TV with its first two episodes. Fiona (Silverstone), a high-powered divorce lawyer, has spent her life shaped by the pain of her father Declan’s (Jason O’Mara, “The Man in the High Castle”) sudden disappearance on her birthday. For years, she channeled that unresolved anger into her work by fighting other people’s battles while ignoring her own. But everything changes when Fiona receives a mysterious package from Declan, prompting her trip to Ireland in search of answers. There, Fiona meets a family that never knew she existed and learns the truth behind her father’s disappearance. The story of abandonment she grew up with was a lie told by her mother to protect her from Declan’s dangerous entanglements. As Fiona digs deep into her father’s secretive past, she gets a sense that someone doesn’t want her asking questions. From director Molly McGlynn (“The Wonder Years”), “Irish Blood” is written by Mike O’Leary (“Misfits”), with Paul Donovan (“Buried on Sunday,” 1992) and Scott Garvie (“Murdoch Mysteries”) serving as executive producers.

WHAT’S NEW ON PRIME VIDEO

“Sausage Party: Foodtopia” – Season 2 It’s a bun-believable new chapter in food history! Season 2 of “Sausage Party: Foodtopia” makes its way to Prime Video Wednesday, Aug. 13, with episodes from Season 1 available on the streamer to “ketchup” on. In Season 2, Frank (Seth Rogen, “This Is the End,” 2013), Barry (Michael Cera, “Juno,” 2007) and Sammy (Edward Norton, “Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery,” 2022) find themselves exiled from the home they once knew. The trio stumbles upon New Foodland — a dazzling, high-tech paradise where food and humans appear to live together in harmony. At first glance, New Foodland is everything Frank ever dreamed of, but it doesn’t take long before cracks begin to show in the city’s perfect exterior. Behind the automated smiles and pristine packaging lies a dangerous secret — one that could destroy everything sentient food has fought for. With the future of food-kind hanging in the balance, it’s going to take more than buns and bravado to bring the truth to light. Starring Will Forte (“The Lego Movie,” 2014), Kristen Wiig (“Bridesmaids,” 2011) and Sam Richardson (“We’re the Millers,” 2013), the show is written for television by Evan Goldberg (“This Is the End,” 2013), with Rogen, Conrad Vernon (“Shrek,” 2001) and Andrew Millstein (“Nimona,” 2023) serving as executive producers.

Q: I love the old Sinatra movie “Tony Rome,” in which he played a private detective. It says that it was based on a book — were there any sequels?

A: There was in fact one sequel filmed, and depending on how good your imagination is, you can picture a third film for yourself.

“Tony Rome” (1967) was based on the novel “Miami Mayhem” by author Marvin Albert, who, confusingly, used the pseudonym Anthony Rome for publication. Albert wrote two more books featuring the Miami-based private eye — “The Lady in Cement” and “My Kind of Game” — but only “Cement” got the film treatment, in 1968.

Both films featured song-and-screen legend Frank Sinatra (“The Manchurian Candidate,” 1962), who at that point was near the end of his film career.

He and director Gordon Douglas (“Them!,” 1954) reportedly squabbled on set, and “The Lady in Cement” also lost money at the box office. All together then, it’s not surprising that they didn’t film the third book.

The third one, “My Kind of Game,” is very much in line with the first two — a violent, steamy pulp thriller — already written and paced like a film. So if you’re really hankering, you can track down the book and picture Sinatra delivering all the quippy lines and gunshots.

And if you enjoy that, you can look up some of Albert’s other novels. He’s actually better known for his series featuring another detective, the French-American private eye Pete Sawyer.

Q: Is Michael Crichton writing all of the new Jurassic Park movies, or is his name just attached because he wrote the original?

A: Sadly, best-selling novelist and visionary screenwriter Michael Crichton, the mind behind several smash-hit films and TV shows, died of cancer in 2008. So, he wasn’t around to see the huge revival of his best-known franchise.

You’re right that he was credited as a writer for “Jurassic World” (2015) and its smash-hit sequels, including this year’s “Jurassic World: Rebirth,” but that’s only because he created the characters and the universe.

He got a similar, posthumous credit in 2024’s “Twisters,” the long-awaited sequel to his 1996 hit “Twister.” Unlike the Jurassic films, “Twister” wasn’t based on a book; Crichton wrote it as a

screenplay, along with producing the original film.

He’s poised to keep getting credits at least a few years into the future as a couple of his other books are at some stage of being turned into films at the moment. It’s possible not all of them will make it to the finish line, though. A couple are just scripts that have been floating around Hollywood for years.

The most promising one is “Eruption.” It would be based on the novel of the same name that fellow airport-book legend James Patterson (“Alex Cross,” 2012) wrote, based on an unfinished Crichton manuscript. A film version is currently at the pre-production stage.

Another potential one is “Pirate Latitudes,” an adaptation of the swords-and-sails adventure story that Crichton wrote, but which wasn’t published until after his death. This one’s been in development for a while, though, so it still may not come to anything.

But considering the fact that films based on his works have earned nearly $4 billion at the box office just in the years since his death, Hollywood has a strong reason to keep putting Crichton’s name in lights for years to come.
