Ogle County sheriff announces reelection bid
SHAW LOCAL
NEWS NETWORK contact@shawmedia.com
Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle has officially announced his intention to seek reelection in the upcoming election cycle.
VanVickle, a Republican, privately shared his decision with close supporters at a June fundraiser, then followed up with a formal public declaration on Monday.
“Over the past three terms, we have accomplished a tremendous amount, but there is still important work ahead,” VanVickle said in a news release.
VanVickle said major milestones reached during his tenure include:
• The implementation of a countywide law enforcement records system that brings all agencies onto a unified platform, sharing information and saving
tax dollars.
• Demonstrated proven leadership during numerous large-scale natural disasters and significant high-profile criminal cases.
• As the former president of the Illinois Sheriffs’ Association and current member of the Executive Board, he continues to represent law enforcement and the citizens of Ogle County on a state level.
• The acquisition of significant state and federal grant funding, securing nearly half a million dollars in equipment and staffing, without burdening local taxpayers.
“Fiscal responsibility has been a core principle of my administration,” VanVickle said. “These grant opportunities have allowed us to make critical investments in public safety at no cost to the residents of Ogle County.”
As the sheriff’s office continues to
evolve, VanVickle said personnel development remains a top priority.
With a wave of retirements and a notably young office, VanVickle plans to expand education and training initiatives. He also announced that grant funding has secured an additional investigator, ensuring the office continues to meet community needs.
“I’m excited about the future of this office,” VanVickle said. “We have an incredible group of committed and professional deputies, and we look forward to helping shape the next generation of law enforcement professionals in this county by remaining on the cutting edge of training, technology, and innovation. As I have said since my inaugural campaign –together, we will make the difference.”
The primary election will be March 17, 2026, with the general election set for Nov. 3, 2026.

Interesting donations arrive amid cooler temps
I have had my daughter, Susan, with me for a few days, and we have been enjoying fresh garden produce and peaches from the peach trees in the south.
I made more peach pies, and we have savored the corn on the cob. Right now I am cooking fresh green beans with potatoes, onion and bacon.
I also got orange rolls from the farmer’s market in Polo, and Susan loved those. I enjoy cooking for guests.
Also, sitting out on the patio and visiting have been pleasant with the cooler weather. I have large butterflies at the Starfire phlox and zinnias. I keep telling them that I have left milkweed in the flower bed next to the store. I do not recall seeing it there last year, but maybe the milkweed knew more butterflies would be around this year.
I love all the black-eyed Susan that is blooming profusely that I brought
POLO HISTORY
from my grandparents’ farm in Olney, Illinois. I remember those hot, sultry days in southern Illinois when you could hardly stand the heat and there was no air conditioning. Now we sit in air-conditioned houses and complain.
Susan and I headed to the museum Saturday morning to see what was going on and we were surprised to see what had been brought in.
Allen Millhouse came in with pottery made by Iowa Kuehl, who was the art teacher in Polo for many years. Iowa saved everything and used it in some art class for Polo. I even had her for a teacher at Sauk Valley.
Susan was little when I was going to Sauk Valley to school, and she would stay in the preschool program while I was in class. One day, I came to pick her up, and they had finger-painted with chocolate pudding. They ate as much as went on the paper and loved it. I saved that piece of art until it had mildew on it and we had to throw it out. I still remember walking in and seeing her hands full of chocolate pudding. How those kids loved that art lesson!
Now I have to decide where to put those art pieces made by Iowa. I will have Kaci help me figure it out.
We really are running out of room at the museum. We also got a very old violin, but not the Stradivarius from the Dr. Burns family in Polo, however. I need to find out more about this violin of Robert Andrews.
Then came Ted with old pictures
and postcards to look at, and we spent another hour poring over Ted’s collection and making copies of what we did not have.
Someone also brought in an old German World War II hat that is very unique. I know it is not Polo, but it is something to have in our museum.
Well, I have just had my second dish of fresh green beans, bacon, potato and onion. Yum! I also look out and see some weeds that need to be taken care of near the milkweed, but maybe I do not want to disturb the milkweed.
There goes a big black butterfly. My, they do like the plants I have this year. Maybe it is better to just stay inside and watch from the window as I count the different kinds of butterflies I am seeing. They are beautiful.

Chester Nash made many contributions to Ogle County
We have at the Ruby Nash Museum a wonderful painting of Chester Nash. Chester was the father of Ruby Nash. He taught in Ogle County public schools for 50 years. He built the Nash Home, now the Ogle County Historical Society.
Chester was born May 1, 1841, in Westernville, New York, and came to Ogle County in the spring of 1849 with his parents and siblings, settling on a farm near Davis Junction.
He enlisted in the Army on Aug. 31, 1863. The following year, he was captured carrying dispatches for Gen. Buford.
After a few days in the infamous Libby Prison in Richmond, he was sent to Belle Isle, paroled and exchanged on March 9, 1864.
After the war, Chester became a husband, father, inventor, manufacturer, foundry owner and an upstanding citizen. We have many of his things in the Ogle County museum, including his patents and other items. Chester played a very important part in the history of Oregon.
The Nash cultivator was invented by
Nash in 1882. The model of the cultivator was made by hand and submitted to the Government Patent Office.
The cultivator consisted of 18 pieces of wood, 14 of wrought iron, 32 of cast iron and weighed 300 pounds. One hundred were made by hand in Davis Junction.
Water power was turned on in his
new factory at Oregon on Jan. 12, 1883. Nash owned one-fifth of the water power produced by the dam.
Power to run the machinery in the factory was supplied by a cable from the dam raceway. There were several cables supplying power to various factories in the vicinity of the dam, including the piano factory.
Nash manufactured cultivators at the Oregon location for approximately 10 years. He then operated a machine shop until 1898.
Chester Nash and friends got a pair of matched cannons through the congressman around 1900. They were on a flat car at the siding down by the Rock River.
A bunch of fellows decided to apply dynamite and shoot them. Chet Nash heard this and stuffed the cannons with bricks, etc. They stuffed a keg of powder in one cannon and put a fuse in from the front end. It blew to pieces.
A 200-pound piece flew two blocks and landed east of the library. This 200pound piece is now located at Riverside Cemetery in Oregon.
So today, remember when you drive by the cannon at Riverside Cemetery, the Memorial Cannons at the courthouse and the Nash Historical Society Building, remember Chester Nash (1841-1921).
The Ogle County Historical Society is interested in upgrading this historic Chester Nash painting. The cost is $3,200 and donations to the Ogle County Historical Society for this project are appreciated.
Just remember his contribution to Oregon.

Rock River Riders ascend 100-foot hill, compete at season’s final event
By EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@shawmedia.com
Motorcycles were on display and in action at the Rock River Riders Motorcycle Club’s hillclimb on Sunday.
The club is celebrating its 90th anniversary this year and also held a motorcycle show at its final event of the season.
The club grounds – home to hillclimbs since 1935 – are located on Pines Road between Oregon and Polo.
Riders from across the region took their best shots at climbing the 100-foot “hill” on their motorcycles, competing in a variety of class divi-
sions. Footage and the time spent to make it all the way to the top determined the winners of each division.
Sunday’s event was the second this year, following the very popular Father’s Day Hillclimb that was held June 15.
The club grounds are located across from the main entrance to White Pines State Park, 6719 W. Pines Road, between Oregon and Polo.
For more information on the Rock River Riders Motorcycle Club, visit the group’s Facebook page.

Rock Falls sisters square off at Ogle County demolition derby in tribute to late uncles
By EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@shawmedia.com
Two Rock Falls sisters squared off in the Young Gun heat at the Ogle County Fair’s demolition derby on Saturday night.
But for Abby and Aubree Boss, the competition meant much more than just a chance to win a trophy.
“I do it for my uncle who passed away,” said Abby, 17. “He was my dad’s brother.”
Abby, who is entering her senior year at Rock Falls High School, had “#82” on the side of her demo car as a tribute to Brock Boss, her late uncle, and brother to Brick Boss, Abby’s dad.
“That was [Brock’s] number,” Abby said after climbing out of her 1993 Lincoln demo car.
Abby drove her battered Lincoln to a fourth-place finish, one place behind her 12-year-old sister, Aubree, who said she was competing for her late uncle, Steven M. “Bubba” Cochran, the brother of Abby and Aubree’s mom, Tonya. He died July 24.
“I wasn’t going to drive, and then I decided to do it for Bubba,” said Aubree, who will be a seventh grader in the Montmorency School District.
Aubree’s co-pilot was her dad, Brick, while Abby’s friend Travis was along for the ride.
Aubree finished third after battling two other cars in the final minutes of the opening heat of the night.
With the bleachers filled to capacity, track officials for Robbo’s Extreme Derby Promotions LLC waved the green flag for the first heat of several planned for the evening.
The four cars crashed and crumped their way around the track until one was left running.
“You could tell the other two were working together, so we had to stick it out,” Brick said after the race.
Saturday night’s race was not the first for either girl, with both sitting behind the driver’s seat a couple of other times.
“Last time I was second,” said Abby. “I like the adrenaline rush.”
For Aubree, the competition is cathartic. “I can let my anger out on other people,” Aubree said, smiling.
Both drove 1993 Lincolns in Saturday’s race. Their numbers – 690 and 790 – mirrored their dad’s 590 when he races.
“We help build the cars,” said Abby. “We have a Dixon address, but we build the cars in Rock Falls.”
Abby said she enjoys the competition the derby brings. “People just need to quit making demo derbies about ‘bad blood,’” she said. “It should not be about
that. It should be about having fun.”
So, what does Abby drive when she’s not on the demo track? “Uh, what is it that I drive?” she asked her mom. “Oh yeah, a Chevy Impala.”

Ogle County sheriff’s squad totaled in I-39 crash
By EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@shawmedia.com
First responders in Ogle County are urging motorists to slow down when they see vehicles stopped along a highway or when emergency vehicles are responding to an incident.
The plea follows a two-vehicle crash on Interstate 39 that left one person injured and an Ogle County sheriff squad car totaled.
First responders from the Monroe Township Fire and Ambulance District issued the plea after a Saturday evening multi-vehicle crash on Interstate 39 that resulted in the closure of the northbound lanes of the busy highway.
While en route to the scene, first responders learned that a vehicle traveling at highway speed had collided with a pickup truck that had been parked on the shoulder of the road.
“Initial reports indicated at least one patient that was in serious condition with multiple unknowns,“ the fire district posted on social media. ”As
such, MercyHealth MD-1 responded directly to the scene along with REACT helicopter. And multiple mutual-aid agencies were requested with ambulances. Multiple other patients were evaluated by the various [emergency medical services] crews.”
At 9:30 p.m., first responders from the Monroe Township Fire and Ambulance District were dispatched to a two-vehicle crash in the northbound lanes of I-39 with reports of multiple injuries.
Illinois State Police Lt. Michael Kuehl said one person was injured and flown to Javon Bea Hospital in Rockford after the disabled pickup truck, parked along the interstate, was struck by another vehicle, pushing the truck into its passengers, who were standing outside the vehicle in the ditch.
“There were six occupants in the truck. They had exited the vehicle when another vehicle hit the truck into one of the occupants,” Kuehl said.
The driver of that vehicle, Daniel Ramos-Orozco, 27, of Rochelle, was cited for aggravated driving while
under the influence of alcohol (resulting in bodily harm), driving while under the influence of alcohol, operating a motor vehicle without insurance, driving too fast for conditions and improper lane usage.
With the help of the Ogle County Sheriff’s Office and the Illinois State Police, the highway’s northbound lanes were closed. While assisting with traffic control, an Ogle County squad car also was hit.
Ogle County Sheriff Brian VanVickle said a deputy had exited the vehicle before the crash.
“Our deputy was out of the vehicle, directing traffic, when their squad was struck,” VanVickle said. “There was significant damage. It is a total loss.”
Kuehl said the driver of the vehicle that struck the squad, Michael Stone, 72, of Loves Park, was cited under Scott’s Law for improper passing of an emergency vehicle, not having insurance and driving too fast for conditions.
Monroe Township first responders urged motorists to be more cautious.
“While we do not know the causes of either incident, we hope everybody learns from these incidents to please slow down and move over when you see flashing lights or even a car parked on the shoulder,” district officials said.
“If you see law enforcement, [the Illinois Department of Transportation or] fire/EMS directing traffic, please pay attention to them. Do not attempt to drive around them to go on your way. They are likely stopping or rerouting traffic due to incidents like this.”
District officials thanked the following agencies for responding with mutual aid for the incident: Kirkland Fire Department, Blackhawk & New Milford Fire Protection District, LynnScott-Rock FPD, Northwest Rescue, Mercyhealth Prehospital Services and REACT w/ MD-1, Illinois State Police, Ogle County Sheriff’s Office and Maggio Truck Center.
Ramos-Orozco appeared in Ogle County Circuit Court on Monday, July 28, and was released with pretrial conditions. His next court hearing is at 10 a.m. Aug. 6.
Oregon man ruled unfit to stand trial for arson
By EARLEEN HINTON ehinton@shawmedia.com
A 23-year-old man accused of setting an Oregon home on fire in May has been determined to be unfit to stand trial after being evaluated by a court-appointed psychologist.
Matthew L. Thoreson was charged May 2 with aggravated arson, a Class X felony, after a May 1 house fire in the 800 block of South Eighth Street in Oregon.
According to court documents, Thoreson “knowingly damaged” the home when he set a fire while one or more people were inside.
He also is charged with residential arson, a Class 1 felony, in which he is accused of using fire to commit the arson in the home where an Oregon woman lived.
Thoreson has been held in the Ogle County Jail since his arrest. He appeared in court July 28 with his attorney, Assis-
evaluation June 23.
tant Public Defender Eric Morrow.
Morrow told Ogle County Judge John “Ben” Roe that Jayne Braden, a forensic and clinical psychologist in Sycamore, had completed her
“[Thoreson] is unfit, and she has suggested a course of treatment,” Morrow told Roe.
Assistant State’s Attorney Matthew Leisten agreed with Braden’s report.
Roe agreed to issue an order declaring Thoreson unfit to stand trial with the “probability” of being declared fit within one year after receiving treatment.
Thoreson will be under the supervision of the Illinois Department of Human
Services and placed in a suitable, secure facility for inpatient treatment, Roe said.
Thoreson will continue to be held in the Ogle County Jail until being transferred to that facility, Roe said.
“The sheriff’s department will transport him, and a 30-day report will be filed with the court ... with timely, written reports as necessary for the first 90 days,” Roe said.
He set Thoreson’s next hearing for 1:30 p.m. Sept. 22.
At a May hearing, Morrow said Thoreson did not have the ability to help with his defense and asked for the court-appointed evaluation. Morrow said he had a “bona fide doubt” as to Thoreson’s “fitness to stand trial or to plead” due to his “mental condition.”
Morrow said the evaluation – paid for by Ogle County – would help the court decide Thoreson’s fitness to face the charges before any further proceedings
are held.
Class X felonies are punishable by six to 30 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections, followed by 18 months of mandatory supervised release. Those convicted must serve 85% of their sentence and register as an arsonist.
The Class 1 felony charge is punishable by four to 15 years in prison, 12 months of mandatory supervised release and registration as an arsonist.
Fire crews reported to the house fire at 12:24 p.m., with the first Oregon fire unit arriving at 12:28 p.m. The fire was extinguished at 12:36 p.m., Oregon Fire Chief Michael Knoup said.
The two occupants of the house were able to escape and exit the home before firefighters’ arrival. One dog and two cats were also rescued from the residence.
Knoup emphasized the importance of having working smoke detectors, adding that the Oregon fire district offers free smoke detector testing.
