UPDATE | BODY FOUND ON INTERSTATE 88

Alcohol statement ‘premature’ State police hint at ‘criminal investigation’

Interstate 88 on Nov. 13, was alcohol-related. During an interview with the Associated Press, state police spokeswoman Monique Bond had said, “It does appear alcohol was a contributing factor [in Catlin’s death].” On Tuesday, she said that statement might have been “premature,” because toxicology reports have yet to be

DIXON – A state police official said Tuesday that it had been “premature” for her to say last week that the death of Lee Catlin, whose body was found on

released by the Lee County coroner. But she stood by her statement that alcohol might have played a role in Catlin’s death, citing preliminary reports. Many questions about Catlin’s death are still unanswered. But in denying Sauk Valley Media’s request for public records in the case, state police this week indicated they

were involved in “an ongoing criminal investigation” into the death. They released no further details. Catlin, 65, of Bettendorf, Iowa, was found Nov. 13 along the side of the highway, just west of Dixon, almost 12 hours after two 911 calls had been made to alert state police to his presence. Four days before Catlin’s

body was found, he was arrested by Davenport police and charged with operating a vehicle while under the influence, a first offense, according to Iowa court records. Catlin’s car was found along the highway, less than a mile west of where his body was discovered. PREMATURE CONTINUED ON A4

DIXON – The fate of Lincoln Elementary School could be decided tonight. The Dixon school board is set to vote on a proposal to close Lincoln, effective for the 201415 academic year, and move the second- and third-grade students to another building. The decision will be made in an effort to address the district’s $1.5 milMichael lion deficit in the Juenger education fund for the 2013-14 school year, which leaves a fund balance of $1.4 million. The education fund is the largest in the school district, paying for teachers’ salaries and educational programs, among other expenses. The possibility of closing Lincoln was first presented to the board during its October meeting, but it had been privately discussed within the district for about a year leading up to that. During the November school board meeting, Superintendent Michael Juenger presented the board with five options – all of which included closing Lincoln – to get the district to a balanced budget by 2017. The options contained different levels of layoffs and cuts to various school funds. DECISION CONTINUED ON A4

To attend The Dixon Board of Education meets at 6:30 p.m. today at Dixon High School, 300 Lincoln Statue Drive, in the auditorium. Go to www.DixonSchools. org or call the school district’s central office at 815-2847722 for an agenda or more information.
