Take 2: ‘Moonlight’ wins best READER POLL picture at Academy Awards

The Associated Press LOS ANGELES – “Moonlight” won the best picture trophy at the Academy Awards in a historic Oscar upset that followed Warren Beatty at first reading the wrong winner.

Shock and chaos spread through the Dolby Theatre when producers of “La La Land” were stopped in the middle of their acceptance speeches to be informed that Beatty had incorrectly read “La La Land” as the winner. “I wasn’t trying to be funny,” Beatty explained, saying he had seen the name Emma Stone from “La La Land” when he opened his envelope.

Host Jimmy Kimmel came forward to inform the cast that “Moonlight” had indeed won, showing the inside of the envelope as proof. “I knew I would screw this up,” said Kimmel, a first-time host. “I promise to never come back.”

Producer Jordan Horwitz then graciously passed his statue to the “Moonlight” producers.

Up until the chaotic end, the telecast had seesawed between jabs at Donald Trump and passionate arguments for inclusivity, with awards going to “La La Land,” “Moonlight” and “Manchester by the Sea.” Damien Chazelle’s celebrated musical “La La Land,” up for a record-tying 14 nominations, took a while to start cleaning up. But as the night went on, its haul began piling up, winning for cinematography, production, score, song “City of Stars” and best actress for Emma Stone. Chazelle, the 32-year-old filmmaker, also became the youngest to win best director.

“This was a movie about love and I was luckily enough to fall in love while making it,” said Chazelle, speaking about his girlfriend and Oscars date, Olivia Hamilton.

Barry Jenkins, the writer-director of “Moonlight” and Tarell Alvin McCraney, whose play it was based on, won for adapted screenplay.

“All you people out there who feel like there isn’t a mirror out there for you, the academy has your back, the ACLU has your back and for the next four years we will not leave you alone, we will not forget you,” said Jenkins.

Kenneth Lonergan, the New York playwright whose last film (“Margaret”) was beset by lawsuits and conflict, won best original screenplay. “I love the movies. I love being part of the movies,” said Lonergan, who then thanked his star. “Thank you Casey Affleck, Casey Affleck, Casey Affleck.”

Shortly later, Affleck – in one of the night’s most closely watched categories, Affleck won best actor – his first Oscar – for his soulful, grief-filled performance in “Manchester by the Sea.” Affleck and Denzel Washington (“Fences”) were seen as neck-and-neck in the category. An admittedly “dumbfounded” Affleck looked shocked when his name was read.

“Man I wish I had something bigger and more meaningful to say,” said Affleck, who hugged his more famous brother, Ben, before taking the stage.

The show kicked off with Justin Timberlake dancing down the Dolby Theatre aisles, singing his ebullient song, “Can’t Stop the Feeling,” from the animated film “Trolls.” It was an early cue that the Oscars would steer, at least in part, toward festiveness rather than heavy-handedness. Protests, boycotts and rallies have swirled ahead of Sunday night’s Oscars. But host Kimmel, in his opening monologue, quickly acknowledged that he “was not that guy” to heal a divided America.

But he still, pointedly, led a standing ovation for the “overrated” Meryl Streep. He later tweaked the president by tweeting to him on air, including telling him that Streep “says hi.”

The wins for Davis, who co-starred in Denzel Washington’s August Wilson adaptation “Fences,” and Mahershala Ali, the “Moonlight” co-star, were both widely expected.

Their awards marked the first time in more than a decade that multiple Oscar acting honors went to black actors.

“I became an artist, and thank god I did, because we are the only profession to celebrate what it means to live a life,” said Davis, the best supporting actress winner. “So here’s to August Wilson, who exhumed and exalted the ordinary people.”

Ali won best supporting actor for “Moonlight.” He glowed on the stage as he informed the crowd that he and his wife, Amatus Sami-Karim, welcomed a daughter four days earlier. The actor thanked his wife for “being such a soldier through the process.”

Both stuck to more private reflections over politics. But a more blunt protest came from a winner not in attendance. Best foreign film for the second time went to Asghar Farhadi, director of Iran’s “A Salesman.” Farhadi, who also won for his “A Separation,” had said he wouldn’t attend because of Trump’s travel band to seven predominantly Muslim nations.

NIU students gain experience in restaurant management at Ellington’s

DeKALB – Before Ellington’s Restaurant opens its doors for lunch, students in Chef Bryan Flower’s class are behind the scenes prepping food, setting tables and practicing the ins and outs of restaurant management.

“From zero to full-throttle, they are learning how to put a restaurant together,” Flower said.

On the main floor of the Holmes Student Center at Northern Illinois University, Ellington’s Restaurant showcases the work of students preparing for careers in dietetics and hospitality.

The restaurant takes its name from legendary jazz musician Duke Ellington, who gave one of his final performances at NIU in 1974.

Seating is available between 11 a.m. and 12:30 p.m., with service until 1 p.m., on Tuesdays and Thursdays until April 27. Reservations can be made online at www.niu.edu/ellingtons/ reservations.

The restaurant reopened this week and already has served dishes such as seafood sausage and marinated tofu.

For $10, diners get a choice of starters, meat or vegetarian entrée and a dessert. Soft drinks are included, but a glass of pinot, chardonnay or other wine costs an additional $5.

The menus alternate and are based on two seasonal ingredients that each student group is assigned. Flower said he also assigns students a protein source to work with: pork, poultry, beef or seafood.

Sarah Wais, an NIU hospitality and tourism management major, said her group was assigned to prepare meals with rutabaga and mandarin oranges.

“Each team comes up with a menu based on a seasonal fruit and vegetable,” she said. “[The food] has to be nutritional, because we also have nutrition majors learning about that aspect.”

On Thursday, Wais was busing tables while other students were serving food, working in the kitchen or managing. The students rotate responsibilities so they can experience all aspects of running a restaurant.

Her group’s menu will be offered March 30, with the theme “The Orange Root at Ellington’s.”

Heather Swenson, an NIU hospitality and tourism management major, also took her turn busing tables Thursday, although she said she does not envision herself working in a

restaurant setting in the future.

“I actually want to go into hotels, but you need food and beverages in hotels, too,” she said. “Now I’ll know how everything works.”

Emily Morzak, an NIU dietetics major, worked on prepping food in the kitchen Thursday and said she has been able to learn about allergy safety and cross contamination while working with food.

Flower said some students have never tasted or seen the kinds of food they are serving, but after six weeks of classroom preparation, they are ready for eight weeks of hands-on training.

“For nutrition students, they focus on the heart-healthy guidelines,” he said. “There’s also the customer-service aspect, which is key for hospitality students to learn to run a restaurant.”

Gardener’s Pathway show draws crowd

Shaw Media correspondent MALTA – Although Mother Nature reminded northern Illinois that it still is winter this weekend, attendees at the University of Illinois Extension Services garden show seemed eager to put some new ideas into practice this spring.

Visitors to the 17th annual Gardener’s Pathway show chose from 17 workshops on topics such as beekeeping, moss growing, organic food gardening, Japanese garden design and vermicomposting – using worms to compost kitchen scraps and other organic matter.

Jayeeta Chowdhury-Woodstrup, an extension program coordinator for the U of I, said about 200 people attend the conference each year.

“We try to get the word out as much as possible. Most of the people who come to the conference know about the program, so this is their annual [event],” Chowdhury-Woodstrup said.

“For gardeners, this is to show them what the trends are, the new plants that might be available to them, and to give them ideas about changing their garden or putting new things in their garden. We have a committee that works throughout the year to get speakers.

Once this conference is over, we’ll start pretty much right away for next year.”

Chowdhury-Woodstrup said the committee brainstorms to see what topics it would like to find out more about and polls the attendees on what they would like to see at future events.

“It’s a varied number of topics, from beekeeping to ferns, to moss, to natives. It’s like this every year, we try and get something of interest to all gardeners,” Chowdhury-Woodstrup said.

“We try to make it as painless as possible for our vendors to come and enjoy this day,” Chowdhury-Woodstrup said.

Marc Amante, lead grower with the DeKalb County Community Gardens, manned an outreach table at the conference. Amante sold herbs and garlic and informed people about DCCG programs and events.

“We’re really excited because we’ve

got a grant to do something called a Growmobile,” he said. “It’s going to be a mobile food pantry. We’re going to go to food deserts in DeKalb and Sycamore and to small outlying towns that don’t have ready access to grocery stores to bring fresh produce to people who would have a hard time getting it.”

Janet Gallagher has been teaching floral design for 20 years, the past 11 years at Kishwaukee College. She’s

demonstrated arranging in the past at the workshop, but, “This year we thought it would be nice for people to make something they could take home,” she said.

DeKalb City Council to rule on downtown project

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – The City Council will rule during its Monday meeting on a rezoning request that would allow for the construction of an upscale apartment building in downtown DeKalb in place of the vacant Otto’s building.

DeKalb’s Planning and Zoning Committee recommended the rezoning request from John Pappas, the

principal developer of the project, to change the properties at 122 S. First St. and 112-118, 122 and 124 E. Lincoln Highway from a central business district to a planned development commercial district.

The Lincoln Highway properties would be demolished to construct the four-story apartment building that would feature 51 fully furnished single-bedroom units with washers and dryers and optional maid service.

The first floor of the building would be for commercial use and would be the new site of Barb City Bagels, which will continue to operate at 122 S. First St. until the building is complete.

Once Barb City Bagels moves to the finished building, the First Street property will be demolished to create 40 surface parking spaces.

Pappas also will be asking for $3 million in tax increment financing

assistance for the $7.5 million project. He estimates the project will take eight to 10 months to finish.

The project also is depending on Pappas buying all of the buildings.

If he were unable to do that, the city likely would pay for the Otto’s property, located at 112-118 E. Lincoln, to be demolished and some or all of the neighboring Mediterraneo Grill building, causing considerable losses in property and sales tax dollars.

Geraldine “Geri” McClanahan Boyd, age 88, passed away Wednesday, February 22, 2017, at the Oak Crest Health Care Center surrounded by her family.

She was born Feb. 13, 1929, in Nashville, Tennessee, the daughter of John Bradley McClanahan and Grace Lee (nee Winfrey) McClanahan A memorial service for Geraldine “Geri” McClanahan Boyd will be held on Tuesday, February 28 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at the Oak Crest Retirement Center in DeKalb, IL. Funeral services will be held on Saturday, March 4, 2017 at 9:30 am in the Chapel at Spring Hill Funeral Home, Nashville, TN. Burial will follow in Historic Spring Hill Cemetery. Caleb Westbrook, her grandson, and minister in the Church of Christ, will officiate. A visitation will be held on Friday, March 3, 2017 from 7:00 to 9:00 pm at Spring Hill.

Geri graduated with distinction from High School in Nashville, and worked as a stenographer. She met and courted her husband, James William “Billy” Boyd, and was married on August 6, 1950. She was a loving mother who enjoyed cooking, baking, embroidering, quilting, and playing the piano. She is survived by her children, Kenneth (Vicky) Boyd of Tucson, AZ, Linda (Don) Neff of Sycamore, IL and Barb (Rick) Westbrook of Richmond, MO.; nine grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren; and her sister, Frankie Patterson of Nashville, TN. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, James William “Billy” Boyd in 2004; and her daughter, Sandy Boyd, in 1988.

With the dollars being restricted to a limited amount of money within a limited amount of time and restricted to a specific part of the community for certain projects, Embrey and Smith both were critical of TIF. John Smith, who wants to Rey have a plan for the historic Egyptian Theatre within his first 100 days in office, asked the candidates what their plans were for the theater.

A $55,000 feasibility study recently was reJerry leased on the future of Smith the Egyptian, with one recommendation being that it should be converted to a performing arts center under city ownership.

Haji-Sheikh does not agree that the city should take ownership of the Egyptian, as it would have to allocate $250,000 a year.

Embrey said he wishes to preserve the site as a local community theater, and there are visual and marketing issues that stop it from bringing in the right acts.

Rey said that any decision on the theater’s future must be a community decision, and would be interested in a public-private partnership to sustain the attraction.

Rey asked all of the candidates how they have related to the diverse populations of DeKalb. All three candidates replied with their various experiences and background with different diversities.

DARA also will be hosting two forums for the 10 DeKalb School District 428 Board candidates March 5 and April 2 at the old Finest Furniture building.

“There are certainly a lot of issues that can be addressed by the school board that can get us in the right direction,” Rubeck said.

He added that he wasn’t sure whether the candidates will have an opportunity to ask their own questions.

DeKALB – The city’s four mayoral candidates were given an opportunity to ask their opponents a question of their choosing Sunday during a public forum put on by the DeKalb Area Rental Association.

Incumbent John Rey and challengers Jerry Smith, Michael Embrey and Misty Haji-Sheikh met at the former Finest Furniture building at 1500 Sycamore Road in DeKalb and were given an hourlong public question-and-answer segment, after which they offered up their own question to each candidate.

Former DARA President Brad Rubeck said he wanted to use this approach to differentiate the forum from similar events hosted by the DeKalb Kiwanis and the League of Women Voters.

“The board had discussed a different format, which would be good for the candidates,” Rubeck said.

Embrey, who raised concerns of transparency within city staff during the public Q-and-A, asked the candidates how they would assess the quan-

tity and quality of city staff members.

Haji-Sheikh called for city staff members to live in DeKalb and the number of workers to be dependent on what the budget can afford. Smith said residency in DeKalb should be encouraged to all new candidates during the hiring process.

WINNETKA – When a largely white public school nestled in Chicago’s wealthiest suburbs planned a daylong civil rights seminar, it drafted two National Book Award winners as keynote speakers and crafted a syllabus that would be the envy of most liberal arts colleges.

But New Trier, a high-achieving, 4,000-student high school regularly ranked among the nation’s best, found itself stepping into the minefield of the national dialogue on race and civil rights. Some parents and conservative groups have deemed the event during Black History Month “radical” and “divisive.” Dueling petitions circulated, heated emails were exchanged and hundreds of people packed a school board meeting beyond capacity.

While New Trier’s demographics and resources aren’t reflective of many public schools, the debate highlights the complications of teaching civil rights when much of the country struggles to discuss race. Some educators worry their work will become more difficult after a polarizing election that’s fueled divisions, even in homogenous and largely Democratic areas such as the upscale Lake Michigan suburbs making up New Trier.

For educators the goal is simple.

High levels of manganese found on Chicago’s South Side

CHICAGO – Dusty mounds of petroleum coke are no longer in Chicago, but federal and city officials have discovered a potentially more dangerous kind of pollution while investigating the black piles that once towered above the city’s far South Side.

Air monitors posted around two storage terminals on the Calumet River in 2014 and 2015 detected alarming levels of manganese, the Chicago Tribune reported. The heavy metal is used in steelmaking and can permanently damage the nervous system and trigger anxiety, learning difficulties and memory loss.

Jackson Jr.’s lawyer seeks shorter supervision period

WASHINGTON – An attorney for Jesse Jackson Jr. is asking that the former Illinois congressman be allowed to end supervised release early.

Hart, a senior writer at the conservative Heritage Foundation who says her school activism is separate from her day job, expects the parent group to continue pushing for more conservative voices at New Trier High.

Among its numerous and nuanced requests, the group wants to add research supporting voter identification laws to a session on voter suppression and ensure a panel on affirmative action includes contrasting views such as the suggestion that it’s detrimental for minorities.

Man who killed son pleads guilty to 2nd-degree murder

URBANA – A central Illinois man has pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in the fatal shooting of his son.

Sixty-seven-year-old David Farrell of Urbana entered the guilty plea Friday in the death of 29-year-old Matthew Farrell. Authorities said the June 12 shooting occurred at the family home during a second angry encounter between the two men that day.

Champaign County Assistant State’s Attorney Scott Larson said he agreed to the guilty plea because two witnesses were prepared to testify that Matthew Farrell struck his father during an argument about three hours before the shooting. He said both men had been drinking.

WASHINGTON – Congress returns to Washington this week to confront dramatic decisions on health care and the Supreme Court that may help determine the course of Donald Trump’s presidency.

First, the president will have his say, in his maiden speech to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday night. Majority Republicans in the House and Senate will be closely watching the prime-time address for guidance, marching orders or any specifics Trump might embrace on health care or taxes, areas where some of his preferences remain a mystery.

Congressional Republicans insist they are working closely with the new administration as they prepare to start taking votes on health legislation, with the moment finally upon them to make good on seven years of promises to repeal and replace former President Barack Obama’s Affordable Care Act. House Republicans hope to pass their legislation by early April and send it to the Senate, with action there also possible before Easter.

Republicans will be “keeping our promise to the American people,” House Speaker Paul Ryan, R-Wis., said as he sent lawmakers home for the Presidents Day recess armed with informational packets to defend planned GOP changes to the health law.

But land mines await. The recess was dominated by raucous town halls where Republicans faced tough questions about their plans to replace the far-reaching law with a new system built around tax credits, health savings accounts and high risk pools. Important questions are unanswered, such as the overall cost and how many people will be covered. There’s also uncertainty about how to resolve divisions among states over Medicaid money.

The lack of clarity created anxiety among voters who peppered lawmakers from coast to coast with questions about what would become of their own health coverage and that of their friends and family. It’s forced Republicans to offer assurances that they don’t intend to take away the law and leave nothing in its place, even though some House conservatives favor doing just that.

“What I have said is repeal and replace and more recently I have defined that as repairing the ACA moving forward,” Rep. Leonard Lance, R-N.J., insisted to an overflow crowd in his politically divided district this past week. “I think we have a responsibility in Washington to try to make the system better.”

It remains to be seen whether the release of detailed legislation in the coming days will calm, or heighten, voters’ concerns. Details on the size of tax credits to help people buy insur-

With lawmakers set to return to the Capitol on Monday, it will become clearer whether the earful many got back home will affect their plans. GOP leaders are determined to move forward, reckoning that when confronted with the reality of voting on the party’s repeal and replace plan, Republicans will have no choice but to vote “yes.”

Many Republicans say that how they will handle health legislation will set the stage for the next big battle, over taxes. And that fight, many believe, will be even trickier than health care. Already, it has opened major rifts between House and Senate Republicans.

Senators also will be weighing the nomination of federal appeals Judge Neil Gorsuch, Trump’s pick for the Supreme Court. Hearings soon will get underway in the Senate Judiciary Committee; floor action is expected before Easter. Despite Gorsuch’s sterling credentials, Democrats are under pressure from their liberal supporters to oppose him, given voters’ disdain for Trump and the GOP’s refusal last year to allow even a hearing for Obama’s nominee for the high court vacancy, federal appeals Judge Merrick Garland.

Yet some Democrats are already predicting that one way or another, Gorsuch will be confirmed. Even if he doesn’t pick up the 60 votes he needs, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, R-Ky., could use a procedural gambit to eliminate Democrats’ ability to filibuster Gorsuch, an outcome that Trump has endorsed.

Chowdhury-Woodstrup said she enjoys seeing attendees leave with ideas for the new season.

“It’s fun to see the excitement that spring brings because [the conference] is always on the last Saturday of February when it’s cold and miserable outside,” she said. “And then, you have a program like this with the greenery, the plants and the new life; it’s this sense of anticipation that spring is just around the corner.”

How Europe can defend itself in a changing world Say this for Donald Trump: He is forcing Europeans to think more seriously about how to protect and defend their continent.

The U.S. president’s disparagement of NATO goes too far, and his focus on getting Europeans to spend more on defense is misplaced.

That said, European nations for too long have treated their defense budgets as an extension of social policy. Expenditure on personnel is more than 50 percent of military spending in nearly all EU countries, compared with about a quarter in the U.S. Meanwhile, spending on equipment and R&D is barely 20 percent in Europe, compared with around 30 percent in the U.S., and only about 22 percent of equipment procurement is collaborative.

The European Commission has a proposal to make European defense spending more rational. But such top-down efforts generally haven’t amounted to much. There actually are hundreds of cooperative military projects in Europe, such as the European Air Transport Command in the Netherlands. Many of these efforts are bilateral and ad hoc. Without a more coherent framework, they won’t close the large gap in military spending and capabilities between Europe and the U.S., or make European militaries more effective.

NATO works, despite strains, for two main reasons: a clear mission – the collective security guarantee enshrined in its charter – and American leadership.

Any EU plan for collective defense would require similar purpose and direction. Yet France, which will be the largest military force in Europe after the U.K. leaves the EU, always has seen an EU defense policy as a counterweight to American-dominated NATO rather than a goal in itself.

Things may now be changing. Between Brexit and Trumpism, European nations might be finally getting realistic about the urgency of preparing for threats from both within and outside the continent. NATO’s intervention in Libya showed that European nations are willing and capable of leading such missions.

None of this is to say that the EU needs its own army. It is only to point out that Europe needs to do more to ensure its collective security, and that part of the answer lies in a more flexible (and less America-dominated) NATO. As Europeans consider any changes, their focus should be less on whether NATO members meet the alliance’s requirement for overall defense spending and more on how and where they spend their money. The better Europe is able to defend itself, the better off it – and the U.S. – will be.

Some institutions can’t deny climate change MOBILE, Ala. – There has been no need to unpack the winter clothes this year because we haven’t had winter.

My second-grader goes to school every morning wearing a cardigan, but she greets me in the afternoon in short sleeves.

Here on Alabama’s Gulf Coast, we’ve had an endless spring of balmy, sunny weeks that were punctuated by a couple of days of January frost. On Christmas Day, Mobile recorded a historic high temperature of 80 degrees, which broke the record of 79 degrees that was set the year before, according to the National Weather Service.

So it goes across planet Earth. Last year was the hottest year on record, beating the record set in 2015. And 2015 topped the record set in 2014, according to NASA. Scientists said that this is the first time that temperature records have been broken three years in a row.

Down here, the sunny days are pleasant enough, but they portend calamity. There is no greater threat facing humankind than global warming. For all the time spent worrying about jihadist terrorists and Mexican criminals, they don’t constitute an existential threat to humanity. Climate change does.

The scientific consensus is clear:

Soaring temperatures, caused by human activity, have dire consequences. Among those are more frequent extreme weather events, including droughts, flooding, wildfires and severe storms. The U.S. has already experienced flooding and droughts, from the Gulf Coast to California, that foretell things to come.

But poorer countries, as seems to be their fate, will fare even worse, even though the wealthier countries – with their automobiles, air conditioning and jet planes – have done the most to warm the planet. Droughts likely will be more severe in countries such as Ethiopia; the Maldives and the Marshall Islands may be swamped by rising sea levels and cease to exist, scientists say.

Of course, President Donald Trump has famously said that global warming is a hoax perpetrated by the Chinese.

But the real danger that Trump represents comes not from his unhinged declarations, but from the policies that will characterize his administra-

tion. He has announced his intention to overturn several Obama-era environmental regulations, including one that bans new coal mining leases on federal lands.

Worse still is his stewardship of the Environmental Protection Agency.

Trump has named Scott Pruitt, a climate-change skeptic who wants to destroy the EPA, as its director.

As Oklahoma’s attorney general, Pruitt was in league with fossil-fuel giants whose goal was to defy every conceivable government regulation so they could pillage the planet as they pleased, recently released emails show. That includes the billionaire Koch brothers, who have done much to bend politics to their laissez-faire liking.

Pruitt and his allies would have you believe that the science on climate change still is in doubt, that the clamor over climate change is just noise from a group of leftist malcontents.

Really? Consider the consensus from two groups that are hardly known for their liberal leanings.

The first is the property and casualty insurance industry, which conducts research to try to limit its losses from property damage. Last year, the Center for Insurance Policy and Research cited a study that found

A talent to remember is a good thing. But it does not necessarily denote intelligence.

My dictionary defines knowledge as “The state or fact of knowing.” And wisdom is “An understanding of what is true, right, or lasting.”

Knowledge is fleeting. Wisdom lingers.

You may know it would not be smart to jump from a plane at high altitude without a parachute. But wisdom keeps you from doing it.

An instructor once told us, “We can’t know everything, but knowing where to seek answers is the first step to wisdom.”

We have much data in books, the internet, on TV, etc. But do we have more wisdom than our forefathers?

Old age does not necessarily endow

us with wisdom and good judgment, much as we’d like to think it does. We seniors sometimes feel we know better in all things.

A byword of the elderly is, “We never used to do it that way.”

This indicates a reluctance to change anything. I give you the saying, “The definition of insanity is trying the same thing over and over again and expecting a different result.”

War is a good example of insanity.

It is good to take away only what is important from any experience.

Mark Twain observed we should get out of an experience only the wisdom that’s in it. A cat may sit on a hot stove lid once and know not to do it again.

But it also will not sit on a lot of cold ones in the future either.

A final thought: My late husband said, “It’s what we

that “extreme weather events (such as prolonged droughts, hurricanes, floods and severe storms) led to $560 billion in insured losses from 1980 to 2015. Experts predict climate change will continue to intensify the frequency and severity of these types of weather-related events.”

The second group that defies characterization as a bunch of tree-hugging leftists is the Department of Defense, which has described climate change as a “threat multiplier.”

According to the 2014 Quadrennial Defense Review, “The pressures caused by climate change will influence resource competition while placing additional burdens on economies, societies and governance institutions around the world.”

When poorer countries are devastated by climate change – when droughts are frequent and severe and water and food are scarce – people will leave, seeking refuge in wealthier countries. The tides of refugees will not be held back, no matter how many walls we build.

That’s no hoax.

To the Editor: As a preschool-age girl, I used to accompany my father on his errands around our small town. Whenever we met people, they’d ask how old I was and when I’d start school.

My doting father would say, “Oh, she’s already so smart. She won’t have to go.”

In my naiveté I believed him, until that first fateful day when he walked me to school. I cried all the way, reminding him of what he always said.

He explained how wonderful it would be to learn to read and get an education.

Learning to read was thrilling for me, even though I didn’t comprehend everything I read. I may have sounded intelligent as I repeated what I’d read,

learn after we think we know it all that counts.”

Reject bill allowing federal funds to private schools

To the Editor: An important bill in Congress is HB 610, which would no longer require accountability by schools and enable federal funds to be used by private, for-profit charter schools.

If passed, it would drop Head Start and Title I reading and math programs. It would greatly reduce the nutrition requirements for school lunches. This bill can pass by a simple majority. If you believe schools need standards, call your congressman and say vote no to HB 610.

Funds raised allow Big Brothers Big Sisters to make more mentoring matches and provide ongoing support for mentors, mentees and families to help sustain long successful relationships.

Bowlers collect pledges from their friends and family. They then bowl with their team on one of the five nights of the event. Money raised from this event will go directly to supporting the one-to-one mentoring matches in the local community.

The event features a “Rock & Bowl” theme and will take place Thursday through Sunday at Mardi Gras Lanes in DeKalb and on March 12 at Idle Hour Lanes in Sandwich. Each night of the event will be filled with team competitions,

At the next STEM Café, “The Rhetoric of Climate Change,” Northern Illinois University Professor Emeritus of English Philip Eubanks will explore why people disagree so strongly about climate change and what can be done to make the conversation more useful for everyone.

The free event will be from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

In his academic career, Eubanks has focused on the study of how people make arguments. In 2015, he published “The Troubled Rhetoric and Communication of Climate Change: The Argumentative Situation.”

A year-and-a-half ago, epilepsy forced longtime football coach Jerry Kill tearfully into premature retirement.

Now, after plenty of rest and a quick administrative pit stop, Kill is physically ready to get back to doing what he does best – helping turn around a football program.

“It took time to get some of the stuff I’ve been dealing with under control, and I called it rehab, sort-to-speak,” said Kill, the former Northern Illinois coach who in December was named the new offensive coordinator at Rutgers.

“I decided to take this one because it was a rebuilding job, and that’s what I’m kind of used to.”

Kill said he was offered a head coaching position by at least one institution, but was adamant he wanted no part of being the top dog of a program because of the strain it brings.

It was unclear whether Kill would ever coach again after his tearful announcement that he was retiring Oct. 28, 2015 as the head coach for the University of Minnesota. He cited the seizure episodes that had become too common with the stress of being a Division I football coach.

In the months after his retirement, Kill said that he got his physical issues under control with the help of a new diet along with plenty of rest away from the game. He would walk between 8 and 10 miles on the beaches in Florida, did plenty of fishing and golfing and even wrote a book – “Chasing Dreams: Living My Life One Yard at a Time.”

In the book, he said that doctors told him that his sleep – or lack thereof – was compounding his epilepsy problems. Kill said that for nearly a decade – including the three years he spent with the Huskies from 2008-10 – he would get maybe three hours of sleep a night.

“Just laying in bed, and brain won’t shut down,” said Kill, who said the Rutgers’ position is the most physically prepared he’s felt for a job in more than a decade.

Now an offensive coordinator under Rutgers head coach Chris Ash, Kill said he’s getting closer to seven hours of sleep a night, which has helped him get his condition under control. Kill, 55, said he did plenty of public speaking during his semi-retirement and

He’s joined with Epilepsy Advocate, a community of others with the disorder, for a social media campaign, “#TackleEpilepsy,” to bring awareness to the condition.

“I don’t think enough people know about it, and people don’t understand that 1 out of 26 people in our country have it,” Kill said. “I don’t think people understand that people are dying from it. I don’t think they understand that there’s many, many different kinds of seizures. It’s something that doctors can’t get their arms around.

“A lot of people won’t hire you because of it. That’s why I’ve been blessed, people won’t hesitate – maybe some, but people have given me opportunities. There’s a lot of people who don’t get that.”

If there’s anybody who knows how to turn around a bad situation, it’s Kill.

In a foreword of Kill’s book, former Southern Illinois athletic director Paul

Kowalczyk called Kill a “turnaround artist.” After Kill went 55-32 in his seven years at Southern Illinois, he came to Northern Illinois in 2008 after the Huskies finished 2-10 the previous season. He went 6-7 his first year and 7-6 his second year before leading the Huskies to a 10-3 record in his final season in 2010. The Huskies picked up their 11th win of the season in a Humantarian Bowl victory against Fresno State, but Kill did not coach in the game.

“The whole culture,” Kill said about what’s important to change coming into programs that have struggled.

“There’s a reason those jobs are open.

I enjoy it, that’s why I’ve come here (to Rutgers). ... I’ve always excelled in these situations, and sometimes you are who you are and I’m a guy who’s used to rebuilding things.”

Kill said that he still keeps up with how his former teams do, and he stays in touch with current Huskies coach Rod Carey.

Kill went 29-29 in his five seasons at Minnesota – including being named the Big Ten Coach of the Year in 2014 – before epilepsy forced him out of the game.

When he began to feel better after six to eight months of retirement, Kill took an administrative job as an associate athletics director for administration at Kansas State, with a focus on football. He called it a test run to ease his way back into the game.

Now at Rutgers, his ability to turn things around certainly will be tested again. The Scarlet Knights finished the season 2-10 overall and 0-9 in conference, and were last in the Big Ten in scoring offense (15.7 points a game) and total offense (283.2 yards a game).

For Kill, he’s back to doing what he does best.

“I never got over missing it,” Kill said about his brief retirement. “It was just if I was healthy enough to do it, and that was the biggest thing.”

Courtney Woods hit a career-best six 3-pointers and finished with 22 points, while Kelly Smith had her first double-double with 17 points and 11 rebounds for the Huskies (19-8 overall, 12-4 MAC) against the Eagles (6-22, 1-15).

“I thought there were spurts where we played good basketball. Obviously, Courtney shot the ball well, and that was big for us,” coach Lisa Carlsen said. “We did just enough, and I think that this was one of those games that we’ll go back and watch and continue to clean things up.”

The Huskies scored eight straight to start the game as part of a 15-4 run and led by as much as 18 in the first half in the wire-to-wire victory.

The Huskies are in third place in the West Division, but also have the third-best record in the conference, one game behind both Central Michigan and Ball State, each 13-3. The top four seeds will get a bye into the MAC Tournament quarterfinals. The tourney’s first round is March 6.

NIU is back home on Wednesday for the final regular-season home game of the year, facing Toledo at 8 p.m.

Men fall at Eastern Michigan: The Eagles rolled off a 20-2 run early in the game as EMU knocked off the Huskies, 84-68, on Saturday.

Eugene German scored 23 and Marin Maric had 20 and 12 rebounds in the loss for the Huskies (15-14, 7-9) against the last-place Eagles (14-15, 6-10).

Willie Mangum led Eastern Michigan with 22 points, Ray Lee added 21 and James Thompson IV had 17 points and 12 rebounds.

“We let Ray Lee and (Willie) Mangum catch-and-shoot early, we couldn’t keep anyone in front of us,” NIU coach Mark Montgomery said. “Dribble penetration was going around our guards, you can’t let those guys get their confidence, we did, and you see what kind of game they had. I thought we got off to a good start, but the turnovers and not defending was a recipe for getting beat.”

Softball notches two shutouts: The Huskies beat South Dakota State, 4-0, then toppled Tulsa, 2-0, on Saturday.

Against the Jackrabbits (3-11), Tara Thacker allowed three hits in the win. She struck out six in the complete game for the Huskies. Alex Frenz moved to 3-0 on the year with her shutout, allowing seven hits against Tulsa (6-7).

“Tara and Alex were lights out today, both throwing complete game shutouts,” NIU coach Christina Sutcliffe said. “We can’t expect anything more out of them. They were workhorses today and were able to get out of some big jams when it mattered as well.”

The Huskies (6-3) fell to host Lamar on Sunday, 4-2. Sam Schmidt was 3 for 3 and drove in both NIU runs.

Baseball drops one to Oklahoma, bounces back Sunday: The Huskies

earned their second win of the season as they defeated Villanova, 6-4, Sunday morning.

“Great bounce back win for HuskieBall,” coach Mike Kunigonis said.

“We kept working and kept grinding all game. We’re starting to play out game and it showed.”

The Huskies’ had 11 hits, led by senior Jason Gasser and junior Jesus Tovar with three apiece. Gasser also had the big hit of the game, giving NIU (2-5) the lead in the fifth inning with a two-RBI single through the left side. Tovar extended the lead with an RBI single in the sixth to extend the lead to 6-4.

The pitchers struggled against the Sooners in a 10-3 loss Saturday.

The Huskie offense put up three runs on six hits, led by shortstop Samuel Vega and designated hitter Tovar who had two hits each. One of Vega’s hits was a two-RBI single to center with the bases load in the top of the fifth to make the score 4-2.

NIU starting pitcher Joe Hawks struggled as he went three innings giving up four runs on seven hits and two walks with five strikeouts.

George Faue was first out of the bullpen and put up similar numbers to Hawks, giving up five runs, four earned, on six hits with two strikeouts.

“Not the outcome we wanted, but we saw some good things today,” coach Mike Kunigonis said. “We battled and saw some young guys do some good things.”

But a Trevor van Riemsdyk turnover in his own zone led directly to a Magnus Paajarvi goal at 16:54 of the first, and Alex Pietrangelo beat Darling from the slot on a second-period power play to tie it at 2-all.

But Panarin found Anisimov with a beautiful pass to the doorstep at 14:40,

and Kero added the empty-netter after Darling – and Hartman – made acrobatic stops in the frantic final minutes.

Newcomer Tomas Jurco played a respectable 12:44 in his Hawks debut.

And if he winds up being the only addition before the March 1 trade deadline, the Hawks feel they have the group that can make another run.

Johansson flies in from West coast to back up Darling

mlazerus@suntimes.com CHICAGO – Lars Johansson played Saturday night in San Diego with the Rockford IceHogs. On Sunday, he made a mad scramble back to Chicago in order to back up Scott Darling after Corey Crawford fell ill.

Johansson served as Darling’s backup for nine games after Crawford’s appendectomy on Dec. 3.

Jordin Tootoo also was sick, missing Saturday’s practice and Sunday’s morning skate, as well as the game. Despite the Vancouver Canucks’ handful of mumps cases conjuring up bad mem-

ories of the 2014-15 leaguewide outbreak, Joel Quenneville said it wasn’t a concern in the Hawks’ dressing room.

At least, not yet.

“I don’t think it is [the mumps], no,” Quenneville said. “I haven’t heard the word ‘mumps’ around here.”

High praise: Jonathan Toews equated Nick Schmaltz’s playmaking ability – particularly the way he never has to look down at the puck while dangling through traffic – to that of Patrick Kane. Schmaltz has three goals and six assists in his last seven games.

“I think he thinks it’s college hockey out there again or something,” Toews said. “He’s really confident.

He’s just creating that time and space for himself and [using] deception. …

In some ways, he’s like Kaner, and he just has that look where he can keep his feet moving with his head up and guys don’t know what he’s doing. So he’s a threat to shoot. When you create options for yourself, defenders need to make a decision, and eventually you’re going to be dangerous. He’s feeling that right now – he’s not thinking a whole lot, he’s just going out there and playing.”

Yeo took over. The Blues won seven of their first eight games under Yeo before dropping their last two entering Sunday.

While it might be strange to look over at the other bench and not see Hitchcock, the Hawks are more concerned with the opposing players than the opposing coach.

“Hitch did a great job there, and they’ve done extremely well here recently,” Quenneville said. “It’s always a good test. Whenever you’re coaching, you’re more worried about your team and how the matchups go on the ice.

You’re not too worried about the other coach during the course of a game.”

CHICAGO – Shortly before the puck dropped between the Blackhawks and Blues on Sunday night, reports spread that the first-place Minnesota Wild had acquired Martin Hanzal, one of the top centers on the trade market, to load up for the playoffs.

The Hawks hadn’t heard. But when they found out afterward, they didn’t sound terribly concerned. After all, Hawks general manager Stan Bowman always says he doesn’t make trades in response to other teams’ moves. And the way the Hawks have been playing lately, he might not need to.

Artem Anisimov scored off an Artemi Panarin feed with 5:20 left in the game to give the Hawks a gritty 4-2 victory over St. Louis. The win – the Hawks’ fourth straight and ninth in their past 10 games – moved them to within one point of the Wild, who are on their bye week and have three games in hand. The Hawks are playing their best hockey of the season, if not since the 2015 Stanley Cup run.

“A lot of teams are going to make pushes for the playoffs, and acquiring some last-minute additions or players they think will bolster their lineups is always a part of that,” Jonathan Toews said. “I love our group right now. Everyone’s getting better individually, everybody’s contributing more, and it’s a lot of fun to see the way we’re playing right now. We know the ceiling is way higher, and we can keep getting better, too.”

Even without Corey Crawford (sick) and Niklas Hjalmarsson (upper-body injury), the Hawks kept rolling. Toews and Patrick Kane each had a goal and an assist, and Scott Darling made 30 saves – including three absolute robberies of Paul Stastny – in the spot start.

He got a little help from his friends at the end, too, as Ryan Hartman made a diving block in the dying seconds to preserve a one-goal lead before Tanner Kero’s empty-netter sealed the victory.

“I flinch sometimes and I’ve got all the pads on,” Darling said. “These guys are warriors, laying out in front of pucks like that. Especially at a crucial point in the game like that. It was a huge play, and as a goalie, you love that.”

Before the game, Toews compared Nick Schmaltz to Kane and Richard Panik to Marian Hossa. Hyperbole?

Perhaps. But they’ve been playing like it lately, and they stayed red hot on Sunday, combining on the first goal of the game. Schmaltz fired a pass between Blues defenseman Joel Edmundson’s skates to find Toews, who made a nice move to beat Jake Allen for the 1-0 lead.

Toews, who added an assist later, has nine goals and 14 assists in his past 14 games. Panik has six goals and nine assists in those 14 games, and Schmaltz has three goals and seven assists in his past eight games.

“That line’s been playing amazing,” Kane said.

Kane has been lighting it up lately, too, and he scored his ninth goal in 10 games, snapping a shot past Allen after

Renteria aims for relaxed mood in clubhouse

GLENDALE, Ariz. – What goes on in the clubhouse stays in the clubhouse, but the walls of the White Sox’ locker room at Camelback Ranch can’t hold the laughter inside.

Team meetings have featured a variety of “presentations” from mostly younger players, arranged by firstyear manager Rick Renteria to keep things Rick Renteria loose, get prospects to bond with veterans and, in general, to promote a tight bond.

“It’s entertaining,” closer David Robertson said without offering much detail. “And it’s a good chance to get these guys out of their comfort zone by forcing them to do something they don’t want to do. It helps them open up and feel like they’re part of the team.”

There was a WWE wrestling show and alma mater themes. Nebraska Cornhuskers Dan Jennings, Cody Asche and Aaron Bummer had their own special moment.

Miami Hurricane Zack Collins,

the Sox’ first-round draft choice last June, is up Monday.

“I’ll probably be more nervous [doing that] than I will playing,’’ Collins said.

Last year, the Sox had Drake LaRoche drama.

This kind is much better.

“I understand what he’s trying to do,’’ veteran Todd Frazier said. “We have good stuff going on in the morning to break up the grind. The meetings have been fun.”

All of this is not unique to spring training.

Rockies manager Bud Black, whom Renteria served under as a bench coach with the Padres, is taking it to a high level in camp this year. Mike Scioscia and Joe Maddon have their own tricks and methods.

“They are getting to know each other,” Renteria said. “They are getting to connect in different ways. But that’s what anybody does. You just try to help your club bond, get to know each other as quickly as possible and then they go out there and play.”

The days of when veterans bigtimed the rookies and prospects are fading away. The young guys still know their place, but they feel more comfortable asking a favor from a

“Everybody is pulling from the same rope. [Renteria] has everyone jelling.”

Whether it translates into wins on the field is open to debate. Players and managers, for the most part, insist bonding has value.

“The more comfortable you feel within the environment you’re working in, when you go out into the field it makes it a little easier,” Renteria said.

The preparation for the players on stage is the toughest part, however.

“They have a lot of homework to do, and then they have to come in and present it,’’ Frazier said. “You feel like you’re back in school. But it’s fun stuff.”

Courtney Hawkins, a first-round draft pick in 2012, hasn’t played in the majors but is an observer of spring training clubhouse culture, especially from the young guys’ side.

“The team is a lot different now,” Hawkins said. You can tell there is a lot of chemistry in here. I love what Renteria is doing, trying to make this a close-knit group. A lot of people are hopping on board.”

“It’s a family-type thing. He means business, he wants stuff done right, but he wants to have fun at the same time. We’re going to roll together, not as individuals.”

Series rematch ends in tie, triggers memories for victors

bmiles@dailyherald.com MESA, Ariz. – The running joke around Cubs camp this past weekend was that Game 8 of the World Series happened Sunday.

The Cleveland Indians traveled across the Valley of the Sun to meet the Cubs at Sloan Park. These two teams previously met Nov. 2 under more serious circumstances – serious as in Game 7 of the World Series.

You might remember the Cubs rallied from a three-games-to-one deficit and recovered from a late-inning disaster at Progressive Field in Cleveland to win their first World Series since 1908.

In mock seriousness, Cubs manager Joe Maddon would not discuss “Game 8” on Saturday, saying the Cubs had a pair of split-squad games to play.

The embargo was lifted Sunday.

“It’s here; it’s upon us,” Maddon said. “The lineups are a little bit different than at the end of the season.

Really, it’s just another spring training game.”

That it was.

The game ended in a 1-1 tie.

With the World Series having gone until Nov. 2, the Cubs and Indians found themselves back at work in the blink of an eye.

“It’s such a fast winter, man,” Maddon said. “It’s fast and furious. Sitting in the dugout (Saturday), kind of awkward because you played late, but still you go through that spring training moment where you’ve got to get your mind working a method that you normally utilize. I was talking to Jonesy (third-base coach Gary Jones) about it because when I used to coach third base, you’d get to spring training and it was like you never coached third base before.

“It’s just weird how we react.

That’s why spring training, all the little things that we do that sometimes are redundant sometimes also players frown upon because they’re major-league players. I’ve always kind of

gotten a kick out of that because as a coach and a manager, we analyze this much more than a player ever does.

We need it. We need it every camp.”

Many Cubs have no doubt watched replays of the World Series games, as well as the documentary, over and over again. Not Maddon.

“I really haven’t,” he said. “You get busy. I don’t know. I didn’t do that with the Angels. I didn’t do that with the Rays. I probably will a couple years from now. But for right now, I’m pretty good. I prefer reruns – of TV shows.”

“First memory, groundball to third,” he said of the final play of Game 7, the grounder to Kris Bryant.

“That’s about it. It really boils down to that. Down 3-1 (in games) was pretty significant. I think KB’s home run to left-center (in Game 5) was large. The home run to left-center, groundball to third probably are the two things.”

The Cubs are out to defend their title this season.

They won last year with a roster

full of young players.

For Maddon, that experience only can be beneficial to those players.

“Yes, all the guys that participated, what it could do to a C.J. (Carl Edwards Jr.), what it could do (Mike) Montgomery, all these guys, (Willson) Contreras. They all played.

“Like I’ve always talked about, a mind once stretched has a difficult time going back to its original form.

I think it’s a classic example of that.

Having been through that moment, the next time you get even close to that, it’s just different. You’ve been there, done that. I don’t mean in complacent method. It’s just a matter that mentally you can handle that situation.

“More than anything, I like the idea that all these guys, the whole group is pretty young. What we were able to accomplish last year is pretty special.

It should carry over.”

Kurt Busch steals monster win on last lap

The Associated Press DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – Decked in Monster gear and chugging a tall boy of the energy drink as he was flanked by scantily clad models and one of pro sports’ top partiers, Kurt Busch celebrated the biggest win of his racing career.

It was Monster Madness!

Busch used a last-lap pass to win the crash-filled Daytona 500 on Sunday in the opening race of Monster Energy’s new role as title sponsor of NASCAR’s top series. Busch, it just so happens, also is sponsored by Monster, and the company has strongly stood by him through his rocky career.

So this was a victory of redemption for Busch, who was suspended by NASCAR two days before the 2015 Daytona 500 for his off-track behavior, and for Monster, which has promised to pump new life into NASCAR’s sagging sport.

“I’ve had a lot of people that have believed in me through the years, a lot of people that have supported me,” Busch said.

Add NFL star Rob Gronkowski to Busch’s bandwagon, too.

Gronkowski celebrated with Busch and the Monster girls in victory lane.

He raved about the win and seemed to really enjoy his first Daytona 500.

“Monster’s the best!” Gronk shouted to The Associated Press. “We picked Kurt to win and he won ‘cause he’s a Monster guy. It was awesome. ... I love being part of Monster, love being here with Monster. Kurt did an awesome job today. Monster killed that race.”

Busch’s banged-up No. 41 Ford will head to the museum for its yearlong display at Daytona International Speedway.

“The more that becomes unpredictable about Daytona, the more it becomes predictable to predict unpredictability,” Busch said. “This car’s completely thrashed. There’s not a straight panel on it. The strategy today, who knew what to pit when, what segments were what. Everybody’s wrecking as soon as we’re done with the second segment.

“The more that I’ve run this race, the more that I just throw caution to the wind, let it rip and just elbows out.

That’s what we did.”

It wasn’t NASCAR’s finest moment, however, as multiple accidents pared the field and had a mismatched group of drivers racing for the win at the end.

As they all slipped off the pace, Busch sailed through for his first career Daytona 500 victory in 16 tries.

It also was the first Daytona 500 win for Stewart-Haas Racing, which is co-owned by Tony Stewart. The threetime champion retired at the end of last season and watched his four cars race from the pits.

“I ran this [darn] race [17] years and couldn’t win it, so finally won it as an owner,” Stewart said. “It’s probably the most patient race I’ve ever watched Kurt Busch run. He definitely deserved that one for sure.”

It was a crushing defeat for Elliott, who is developing a reputation as a driver unable to immediately digest defeat. He left the track without comment in a car driven by his father, Hall of Famer Bill Elliott.

Ryan Blaney finished second in a Ford. AJ Allmendinger was third in a Chevrolet, and Aric Almirola was fourth for Richard Petty Motorsports.

“I can understand his disappointment, for sure,” Blaney said of Elliott, his friend and rival. “You’re leading the race. Looks like you’re going to win the Daytona 500. You know how he is, he’s very hard on himself. But it wasn’t his fault. You can’t help you run out of gas.”

The win was a huge boost for Ford, which lured Stewart-Haas Racing away from Chevrolet this season and

celebrated the coup with its second Daytona 500 victory in three years.

“What a great win to start off a partnership,” said Raj Nair, Ford’s chief technical officer. “We were so fast. We knew we had a good chance and Kurt hung in there after getting caught up in that crash. He didn’t give up.”

The first points race of the Monster era was run under a new format that split the 500 miles into three stages.

Kyle Busch won the first stage, Kevin Harvick won the second stage and neither was a contender for the win.

NASCAR also this year passed a rule that gave teams only five minutes to repair any damage on their cars or they were forced to retire.

But the race was slowed by wreck after wreck after wreck, including a 17-car accident at the start of the final stage that ended the race for seven-time and reigning series champion Jimmie Johnson and Danica Patrick.

It was a particularly rough incident for Patrick and her Stewart-Haas Racing team, which had all four of its cars collected in the accident.

“Just seems like that could have been avoided and was uncalled for,” Johnson said about the aggressive racing behind him that triggered the accident.

Kurt Busch was able to continue, but most of the top contenders found themselves on the outside looking in.

“Some years I think we have it where we run here and nobody wrecks and it’s great racing,” said Brad Keselowski, “and then you have other years like this where everybody wrecks all the time.”

Roughly two hours before the race, NASCAR chairman Brian France issued drivers a stern warning about blocking.

France rarely wades into competition matters, especially in public, but stepped to the microphone to admonish the drivers. The Truck Series and Xfinity Series races were sloppy wreck-fests, and France hardly wanted the same spectacle for his Super Bowl.

“This is our biggest event,” France told the packed drivers meeting. “What I don’t normally do, and I’m going to do this today, is bring up a competition issue. This is for the drivers. And what I want you to think about. We realize blocking is part of racing. We understand that. We accept that.

“Do not look for NASCAR ... when you block somebody out there. It causes almost all the big incidents. Do not look for NASCAR ... you better hope there’s a Good Samaritan behind you who is going to accept that block, because they have that lane and the right to it. And I don’t often make those statements.”

Blocking or not, the race was a mess of tangled sheet metal and wrecked cars.

Fibrates may be better than statins Dear Doctor: My friends and I are all getting older, and I’ve noticed that some of them are on statins to lower their cholesterol. My doctor chose a fibrate for me, Lopid (gemfibrozil). What’s the difference between statins and fibrates, and what’s special about Lopid?

Dear Reader: Statins and fibrates act in fundamentally different ways. Statins, more officially known as HMG-CoA reductase inhibitors, target cholesterol in the bloodstream, most of which comes from the liver, not from foods that we eat. They work by binding to the enzyme HMG-CoA reductase, which the liver needs to form cholesterol.

Statins act in another way as well. Because they make cholesterol levels fall within the liver, the liver then increases production of a substance, or receptor, that takes LDL, the so-called “bad” cholesterol, from the bloodstream and shepherds it back into the liver. There, it is eventually removed via the bile. Because we make more cholesterol at night, statins are given before bedtime.

Fibrates, which include gemfibrozil (Lopid) and fenofibrate, target triglycerides in the bloodstream. They work by decreasing the liver’s release of triglycerides and by increasing the production of lipoprotein lipase, which breaks down triglycerides. In addition, fibrates increase the formation of HDL, the so-called “good” cholesterol; they have only minor effects in reducing LDL. Unlike statins, fibrates should be taken before eating.

Statins have undeniably shown benefits in decreasing the risk of both heart attacks and strokes; fibrates seem to have a more narrow benefit. In 2010, a Lancet review analysis of 18 studies involving more than 45,000 patients showed a 13 percent decrease in heart attacks and angina among people who were taking fibrates, but no reduction in stroke risk, no decrease in overall death rates and no decrease in death rates from

A 1987 study published in the New England Journal of Medicine also showed mixed results. It followed more than 4,000 middle-aged men with elevated triglyceride levels for five years. At the start of the study, one group began using gemfibrozil, and the other group began taking a placebo. At the end of the study, the group that took gemfibrozil had a 34 percent decrease in the risk of coronary heart disease, but there was no difference in the death rate.

Overall, statins appear to have greater benefit than fibrates in decreasing the risk of both heart attacks and strokes. That’s not to say fibrates aren’t the right choice for some people, however. Significant elevation of triglycerides, greater than 400, can cause inflammation of the pancreas, so people with very elevated triglyceride levels would benefit from a fibrate medication. So too might those with elevated triglycerides and normal LDL cholesterols.

Before you suggest combining a statin and a fibrate for added benefit, be aware that the combination can increase the risk of muscle aches and possible muscle breakdown. On occasion, I will prescribe this combination to my patients with very elevated triglycerides, but I monitor them carefully for any signs of muscular problems or breakdown. Also in such cases, I try to lower the statin dose to decrease the chance of muscular symptoms.

In this deal, there are two possible defenses against four spades, but neither will work if declarer plays correctly. What are those defenses, and how can South survive?

East might have opened one notrump, adding a point for his good five-card suit. (The Kaplan-Rubens method evaluates the hand at 16.2 points because it likes strong fivecard suits, aces and kings.) Then, maybe South would have overcalled three spades, but the lack of a singleton would have been a tad worrying. If South had passed, North would presumably have doubled in the fourth position, and South would have bid two or three (or four!) spades.

After East preferred to open one heart, South overcalled three spades to show a good seven-card suit and some 5-9 high-card points. North bid game, hoping for the best.

West leads the heart queen. East might overtake this, cash the heart ace and continue with the heart 10, hoping West can gain a trump promotion. But South ruffs high and plays a spade to the jack. Declarer ruffs the next heart high, draws trumps and claims, discarding his diamond loser on dummy’s third club.

Alternatively, East lets his partner take the first two tricks, then West shifts to the diamond jack. South, realizing that the finesse is doomed, wins with dummy’s ace and immediately takes the club winners to sluff his second diamond. Then he concedes one trump trick.

The Director of Nursing is responsible for overseeing the nursing department and assuring high quality nursing care for the residents in accordance with State & Federal regulations.

Applicants must have an active Illinois Registered Nurse license with strong customer service and leadership abilities. Previous long-term care experience required.

D.O.N. or A.D.O.N. experience is preferred.
