Saying ‘no’ for sanity’s sake

On good days I go to bed around 7:30 p.m. and then wake up around 4:30 a.m.

Getting at least eight to nine hours of sleep is a necessity for me, especially during the week.

It is a problem when I don’t get enough rest. I am grumpy. I have a voracious appetite and I look ragged.

Recently, I have not been able to get my rest. It has become very trying to get all that I need done and still get adequate sleep.

I started a class with National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) on Wednesday nights in hopes of teaching the class at some point.

The class starts at 7 p.m. and ends at 9 p.m., then I have to drive home from Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove, so that puts me home by 10:15 p.m.

At my school, out in Naperville, we hosted an open house. This lasted from 7 to 8:30 p.m., then I had to commute home, which took about 45 minutes.

I have shifted my therapy appointment to 5 to 6 p.m., so this only gives me an hour and a half to spend time with my family before going to bed.

My point is, I am a zombie.

Trying to do everything is impossible. I have to learn to say “no” to various commitments and events.

I want to have it all, but is it worth giving up my sleep or health?

I know most mamas and even daddies feel this way. We put on a brave and happy facade to please everyone but ourselves.

We need to start learning to say “no.”

Will we end up disappointing people? Will some folks think we are selfish? Probably.

Will some people get angry with us? Maybe.

I guess learning to accept these displeasing side effects is a part of gaining our sanity back.

Overextending myself will only lead to dissatisfaction in many areas of my life. Trying to do everything for everyone won’t allow me to give 100 percent.

Spreading myself too thin not only affects my physical health, but will affect my mental and social health, too.

I need to prioritize what really matters in my life. This includes an adequate amount of sleep, eating well, spending time with family and trying to grow professionally.

Other extracurricular activities need to be sidelined. Even if some people don’t understand, I still need to be a big girl and say “no.”

DeKalb High School marks month with events for students

DeKALB – Julian McElroy said he believes humans made up the concept of “race” to put others into boxes, as two people are not the same just because they have a similar skin color.

“The reality is, I’m just a person.

That’s it,” he said. “You can call me black if you want, but at the end of the day I’m just a man, no different than any other man, except I’m much more cool.”

McElroy, a teaching assistant in the DeKalb School District, spoke to students at DeKalb High School on Friday as part of its “Suitcases – Living Among Us” event.

Students tested their knowledge of black history, heard staff members “open their suitcases” about their experiences with race and appreciated a jazz concert in celebration of Black History Month.

Some participated in a black history-themed game of Jeopardy!, where classes competed to answer questions about historical black figures and facts. Others heard their classmates perform jazz ensembles and sing a cappella in honor of Black History Month, while the rest packed the cafeteria for a living-history presentation.

Maurice McDavid, dean of students at DeKalb High School, introduced staff members for the “Suitcases – Living Among Us” assembly.

“Today as we celebrate Black History Month, we want to attempt to let you know a little bit about some of what’s in the suitcase, the common things that are often found in the suitcase of African-Americans,” he said.

McElroy recalled growing up on the West Side of Chicago and taking public transportation for an hour and a half to get to his high school on the North Side.

“That was my first time outside of teachers dealing with people that didn’t look like me,” he said. “That transition was a little bit difficult.”

He said he realized while traveling through different Chicago neighborhoods that people are divided by race, but he eventually learned that he should not feel defensive or threatened because someone is from a different background.

self and other people,” McElroy said.

McDavid said the idea of the “suitcases” presentation came about as a way to create a healthy, open dialogue about race, gender and other aspects of people’s identities. That was the goal of last year’s assembly, too, he said – but the message didn’t come across the same way. Instead, hundreds of students stayed home the day after last year’s assembly as tempers flared on social media.

“What [students in last year’s assembly] were attempting to do was open up that suitcase and say, ‘Here are some things that I’ve experienced, and I’m going to share them with you,’ ” McDavid said. “And I think

that in doing so, some people felt like it was an attack.”

DeKalb High School freshman Jaylen Nelson was in the audience for the Jeopardy! game and said it made him realize that schools should teach black history more throughout the year.

“I’m not saying the school curriculum is bad or anything, but I just think they should incorporate more, so we know more about this,” he said.

“Some kids were in the crowd looking it up on Google trying to find the answer, like, we should already know this.”

He also said he was surprised that some white students answered more

questions than black students.

“I think it woke some of us up, because right now I’m about to go home and look up some of that stuff,” Nelson said.

Freshman Jaden VanHooreweghe said that although the school originally planned for a wax museum event, he thought the musical performances were “wonderful” and well attended.

“The [jazz] team was well coordinated, and they put a lot of effort into what they did,” he said. “Especially the a cappella; that was my favorite part. They seemed to have sung their hearts out.”

Senior Fredrick Whitaker said he enjoyed the jazz and singing performances as well.

“Black history has a lot to do with jazz, so I really think they brought that essence of it out,” Whitaker said.

The school will host the events again Monday, so students have the chance to attend two of the three presentations.

Activists seek parley with lawmakers Local groups plan events calling out Republican representatives

DeKALB – With Congress in recess this week, local activists have joined those around the country in pressing Republican congressmen to hold town hall meetings.

Across the U.S., Democrats and their allies spent this short congressional recess protesting elected Republican politicians, who are avoiding the events that often turn into shouting matches.

Like the tea party sympathizers who vented against Democrats and President Barack Obama, the new left and left-leaning protesters are taking out their ire on Republicans and their links to President Donald Trump.

Sarah Moses never thought of herself as an activist. But after Trump’s inauguration, Moses, of DeKalb, said she had to do something.

Moses, 42, is the organizer of Action Steps for America, a local organization that is scheduled to hold its fifth meeting at 10 a.m. today at the DeKalb Public Library, 309 Oak St. The crowd has grown each time, Moses said. ”We’ve got a large undocumented population in DeKalb, so immigration is important here,” she said. “There are a lot of Muslims here on visas because of [Northern Illinois University], I’m concerned about education and public schools, environmental protection and health care are huge issues that affect everyone. Every day I post action steps on Facebook, which are actions we can take. We’re a nonpartisan group. Everyone here is against dangerous policies for the U.S.” Citizen groups have formed in both the 14th and 16th congressional districts and held events calling out the representatives in each, who were easily re-elected in November.

In DeKalb, Action Steps for America worked with DeKalb Area Progressives to schedule a town hall meeting Tuesday at the DeKalb Area Women’s Center. A spokesperson for U.S. Rep. Adam Kinzinger said in an email that Kinzinger, who was re-elected in November, was looking at options for scheduling a town hall with constituents, but he would not be at Tuesday’s event.

A town hall is designed to hear from constituents, engage in respectful conversation, and have a productive meeting on the issues.”

In the 14th District, which covers parts of eastern DeKalb County including Sycamore, about 100 people protested Feb. 14 outside the Campton Hills district office of U.S. Rep. Randy Hultgren, R-Plano, brandishing signs and occasionally chanting, “We want a town hall.”

This group and others held similar demonstrations outside their GOP con-

gressmen’s offices as part of an Illinois Day of Action sponsored by Indivisible, a national movement countering Trump’s initiatives and policies, particularly regarding the Affordable Care Act. Their signs carried various messages, such as that Hultgren is missing in action or MIA, calling for a town hall, and asking how he can represent them if he won’t meet with them.

Charles Cappell, a retired sociology professor from Northern Illinois University and a former Campton Hills village trustee, said he dropped off a public memo to Hultgren concerning Medicaid expansion and the Affordable Care Act enrollment in the 14th Congressional District.

The memo seeks to have Hultgren sign a promise “to my constituents that I will not vote for any changes to or repeal of the Patient Protection and [Affordable] Care Act that will diminish in any way the quality, scope, benefits coverage or that will increase the personal health care costs to patients currently covered by the ACA.” Cappell’s memo also states that if Hultgren does not sign the promise, that he should provide “a justification and rationale for the harm your actions will do to the least well-off among us.”

LOCAL BRIEF DeKALB – Firefighters were called to a fire that began in the oven of a pizza restaurant Friday morning.

Just before 5 a.m., employees at a nearby business called to report a fire at Topper’s Pizza, 1015 W. Lincoln Highway. An off-duty firefighter also noticed the fire and attempted to put it out, according to a news release from the DeKalb Fire Department.

Firefighters arrived on the scene

to find smoke and flames inside the business, and used a hose to douse the flames. No one was injured by the fire, and nearby businesses were checked for fire and ventilated, the release said.

The fire caused about $10,000 in damage, fire officials said. Fire departments from Sycamore, Cortland, Malta, Genoa-Kingston, Shabbona and Maple Park assisted on the call, as did DeKalb police.

SYCAMORE – A DeKalb County judge set bond at $955,000 Friday for a 22-year-old DeKalb man charged with armed robbery, home invasion and carjacking.

Robert Harrison, 22, of the 1100 block of Varsity Boulevard was arrested Thursday in connection with the string of incidents, which occurred in August and September, according to court records. He would have to post $95,500 to be released.

Prosecutors allege that Harrison threatened the owner of a 2012 Ford Mustang and stole the vehicle on August.

Harrison also faces charges in connection with two armed robberies that occurred in September in DeKalb, records show.

On Sept. 7, Harrison is accused

of robbing a woman of several cellphones while armed with a gun at the 700 block of Regent Drive.

On Sept. 20, he is accused of forcing his way into an apartment in the 900 block of Fotis Drive. Once inside, Harrison and an associate, Tavish Johnson, allegedly hit the victim with a gun, threatened them, tied them up and put them in a closet, according to court records.

Another resident was also tied up and put in the closet upon returning home.

Harrison and Johnson stole the victim’s money, cellphones, television, laptop computer and car, according to court records.

Johnson later was arrested in Chicago.

If convicted, Harrison could face six to 30 years in prison.

Harrison is next due in court at 9 a.m. March 17.

news@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – A DeKalb County jail inmate who was determined not to be sent to another county’s jail stripped off all his clothes and slashed at sheriff’s deputies with a pen before he was finally subdued, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

Levon Ozier, 22, of the 200 block of Partridge Place, DeKalb, was charged with aggravated battery and criminal damage to government-supported property after the incident, which occurred at 2:50 p.m. Tuesday at the jail as deputies were preparing inmates to be taken to another county’s jail, police said.

If convicted of the most serious charge, aggravated battery, Ozier could face three to seven years in prison.

Ozier had been on probation in connection Levon Ozier with a 2015 aggravated domestic battery offense in which he was accused of threatening to kill a pregnant woman. He has been jailed since he was arrested Jan. 2

by DeKalb police. He was charged with aggravated battery, domestic battery, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of more than 10 grams of marijuana and resisting a peace officer.

The county regularly sends inmates

to jails in other counties because the inmate population is almost always more than the jail’s capacity. However, Ozier did not want to go, the release said.

“To impede deputies from transporting him, Ozier removed all of his clothes and covered himself with soapy water,” the release said. “He stated he would stab the first person to enter his cell.”

Ozier swung at deputies with a pen when they entered, and made contact with the abdomen of one deputy, according to the news release. The officer was wearing body armor and was not injured, police said.

Police used a stun gun to subdue Ozier, the release shows.

Park district selects contractor for building

dzimmerman@shawmedia.com DeKALB – Park officials are eager to get started on a project to build a new maintenance facility now that a deal has been approved within the district’s budget.

DeKalb Park District board members selected Loves Park-based Larson and Larson Builders Inc. for the project. However, their bid was more than $200,000 over the district’s authorized budget for the project, so the board unanimously approved a series of cost-saving features to keep the project in line with the district’s financials.

Executive Director Amy Doll said the next step will be to get the contract with Larson and Larson finalized and signed. It is being reviewed by the district’s attorneys, she said.

“Hopefully, we can have a pre-construction meeting next week to set up a timeline and break ground within a couple of weeks,” Doll said.

Larson and Larson’s bid subtotal for the project was almost $1.7 million.

To bring it within the district’s budget,

22 changes totaling $220,554 were approved.

Some of the changes to the roughly 11,000-square-foot building will include replacing a concrete ceiling with a wood ceiling in the safe room, which will save $18,000; reducing reinforcement in the toilet room masonry walls, which will save $7,800; deleting three roof canopies, saving $8,600; installing a 50-gallon water heater instead of a 100-gallon model; and reducing the contingency allowance from $100,000 to $56,924.

All four park commissioners approved these changes. Former commissioner Bryant Irving retired at the end of January because of health concerns.

Design plans for the building were presented to the board in December by Oak Park-based FGM Architects, who designed the building. The building will be around the same size and will be built on the same site as the old maintenance building, which was condemned in 2014 after it was deemed structurally unsound.

DeKALB – Jeff Wielert, a Hinckley-area vegetable farmer, said at the end of some days, farmers have a lot of leftover produce they use to make salsas, chutneys, sauces and other processed goods.

Wielert uses a canning company to jar his leftover produce, but said he could stand to benefit from processing some of his vegetables in a shared-use community commercial kitchen.

The DeKalb County Community Gardens proposed the idea of a kitchen, coupled with a brick and mortar food hub. While results from a feasibility study conducted last year showed unfavorable conditions to establish a food hub within DeKalb, they did show a need for a community kitchen.

Director Dan Kenney said there needs to be a significant increase in area farmer production in order to make a food hub feasible.

At minimum, a food hub would need to generate around 500,000 pounds of products annually to make it financially feasible, but there is only an estimat-

ed 250,000 to 300,000 pounds grown each year in the area.

Kenney said that he has not given up on the idea of a food hub, and he hopes the creation of a community commercial kitchen will draw more products and farmers into the area and help local farmers step up their production.

“Local growers could be 100 to 250 miles away and bring their product to one commercial area to be sorted, graded and sent out to different locations,” he said. “We’re at the edge of Chicago and the collar counties, where there is $25 million of untapped market for people who want to buy local food but can’t find enough of it.”

A certified commercial-grade kitchen would allow farmers to make jams or other processed goods using their produce and allow caterers or nonprofit organizations to do cooking. Kenney said he identified two potential sites within the county for a kitchen.

However, the feasibility study shows that respondents in favor of the kitchen would use it between 252 and

Some governors avoid mention of Trump

The Associated Press WASHINGTON – These should be heady times for the GOP as the nation’s governors prepare to gather for their winter meeting in Washington, D.C. Republicans hold 33 governorships, compared with just 16 for Democrats, and the GOP has full control of the legislatures in two-thirds of the states.

But there is a sense of unease for Republican governors in Democratic-leaning states. They criticize President Donald Trump gently, picking their spots to appease the Democratic and independent voters they need to remain in office. At the same time, they don’t want to alienate Trump supporters.

For some, the best strategy is to avoid mentioning Trump at all.

Democrats sense an opening ahead of the 2018 elections and are taking any opportunity to link Republican governors to the president. Republicans will be defending 27 of the 38 governorships up for election this year and next. Nine of the GOP governors are in states Hillary Clinton carried last year.

“I think what the Trump administration has done, it has really made every Republican governor out there – especially a moderate Republican governor in a Democratic state – it has made

News from across the state Former Lake County coroner pleads not guilty to perjury

WAUKEGAN – Former Lake County Coroner Thomas Rudd has pleaded not guilty to five counts of perjury.

Rudd entered the pleas Friday in Lake County Circuit Court. The 70-year-old is accused of having nominating petitions with signatures of people who were dead or who later claimed they didn’t sign when he was seeking re-election in 2016. Rudd dropped out of the Democratic primary after it was determined he didn’t have enough valid signatures on his nominating petitions.

Rudd faces two to five years in prison if he is found guilty of the felony charges.

His trial is scheduled for July 10. He was released from the Lake County jail after posting bail.

Baby born premature dies after mother shot dead

CHICAGO – A baby girl has died about five months after she was born prematurely when her mother was killed in a drive-by shooting in Chicago.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office said Friday that 5-month-old A’Miracle Jones died Thursday evening at a downtown Chicago hospital. The baby’s mother, 19-year-old Parasha M. Beard, was killed Sept. 18 when she was shot in the head.

Police said Beard was in a parked car when another vehicle drove past and someone inside fired shots. The medical examiner ruled Beard’s death a homicide. No arrests have been made.

The Chicago Tribune reported that Beard’s mother, Crystal Jones, has been caring for the baby since her daughter’s death. Jones told the newspaper “it hurts so bad.”

Man convicted in slaying of mother outside church

WHEATON – A Downers Grove man has been found guilty of first-degree murder in the shooting death of his mother.

A DuPage County jury deliberated two hours Thursday before finding Michael Zaky Bassaly guilty of murdering 61-year-old Yvonne Bassaly. The woman was shot in the head in August 2013 as she sat in the backseat of her car parked in the parking lot of a Coptic Christian church in Burr Ridge.

Michael Bassaly testified Thursday his mother was fatally wounded after she pointed his gun to her head. The 31-yearold Bassaly said he tried to get his finger inside the trigger guard when the gun discharged.

It is a story prosecutors derided as a “desperate pack of lies.”

Defense attorney Marc Wolfe said the woman’s death was “a horrible accident.”

Sandoval, vice chairman of the governors association, said he is comfortable being the face of moderate GOP governors across the country. He has urged caution on Trump’s pledges to repeal President Barack Obama’s health care law and build a wall along the U.S.-Mexico border. Sandoval said he believes he and other moderates can work productively with Trump and his Cabinet.

“We’re five weeks into the administration, so I think it’s really premature to start drawing conclusions now, with regard to what the implication could be in future elections,” he said.

Heading into the upcoming governors’ races, the Republican Governors’ Association is better-funded, having raised $60.7 million in 2016, compared with $39 million by the Democratic Governors’ Association. The RGA has tried to paint Democratic challengers as too liberal and out of touch with mainstream America.

This weekend’s bipartisan governors’ gathering includes an audience with Trump and leading Republicans in Congress. Governors of both parties are concerned with a full range of proposals that could affect state budgets, including possible repeal of the Affordable Care Act, reforms to Medicaid, immigration enforcement and spending for infrastructure.

Officer won’t face charges in fatal shooting during fight

SPRINGFIELD – A Springfield police officer won’t face criminal charges in connection with the fatal shooting of a 27-year-old man during an altercation.

Daniel D. Rogers of Springfield was shot several times Jan. 23 and later died at Memorial Medical Center.

Springfield Deputy Police Chief Dennis Arnold said Officer John Shea suffered facial injuries during the altercation.

Sangamon County State’s Attorney John Milhiser announced Thursday a review of an Illinois State Police investigation resulted in a decision not to prosecute Shea.

State police said the incident occurred after Springfield police received calls of a man acting erratically. When police arrived, Rogers threw objects at the squad car and later attacked Shea, who attempted to arrest Rogers.

Milhiser said he met with Rogers’ family and showed them a video of the incident.

California roads, dams could cost $1B to fix

FRESNO, Calif. – The bill to repair California’s crumbling roads, dams and other critical infrastructure hammered by an onslaught of storms this winter could top $1 billion, including nearly $600 million alone for damaged roadways that more than doubles what the state budgeted for road repair emergencies, officials said Friday.

Adding to the problems, many communities have drained their emergency budgets and are looking to the state and federal government for help. But on top of the latest damage, the nation’s most populated state is struggling with a $6 billion annual backlog of repairs for roads, highways and bridges that leaders can’t agree on a way to fund.

Trump blasts media, anonymous sources The ASSOCIATED PRESS WASHINGTON – President Donald Trump unloaded on the news media Friday for using anonymous sources – just hours after members of his own staff insisted on briefing reporters only on condition their names be concealed.

Unleashing a line of attack that energized an enthusiastic crowd at the nation’s largest gathering of conservative activists, Trump said unethical reporters “make up stories and make up sources.”

“They shouldn’t be allowed to use sources unless they use somebody’s name,” he declared. “Let their name be put out there.”

Trump told the Conservative Political Action Conference that while not all reporters are bad, the “fake news” crowd “doesn’t represent the people. It will never represent the people and we’re going to do something about it.”

Trump didn’t expand on what he had in mind or which news organizations he was talking about. But his broadsides represented an escalation of his running battle against the press, which he has taken to calling “the opposition party.”

The president has chafed at a number of anonymously sourced stories, including numerous reports describing contacts between his campaign advisers and Russian intelligence agents, which the White House has sharply disputed.

However, members of his White House team regularly demand anonymity when talking to reporters. That was the case Friday morning when Trump officials briefed reporters on chief of staff Reince Priebus’ contact with top FBI officials concerning the Russia reports.

Trump’s appearance at CPAC represented a triumph for both speaker and audience – each ascendant after years when they were far from the center of the political universe.

Elizabeth Connors of New York recalled past gatherings as collections of the “downtrodden.”

Today, she said, “it’s energized” after years in which “we’ve been just pushed down, pushed down, pushed down.”

Nicholas Henderson of Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, was there in his “Make America Great Again” hat and pronounced Trump’s speech rousing.

“He touched on a lot of things we’d already heard before, which is reassuring, tells us he’s still committed

to those promises he made during the campaign,” Henderson said.

Trump, who first appeared at CPAC as a reality TV star six years ago, recalled his past visits with nostalgia, saying the crowd helped put him on the path to the presidency.

“I loved the commotion,” he said. “And then they did these polls where I went through the roof and I wasn’t even running, right? But it gave me an idea.”

From there, Trump’s latest speech played out like a greatest hits reel from his 2016 campaign.

He reminisced about his victory in the Republican primaries. He vowed to “build the wall” along the Mexican border. He denounced Hillary Clinton’s characterization of some of his supporters as belonging in a “basket of deplorables.”

The crowd responded to his Clinton criticism with chants of “Lock her up!” just as they did at Trump rallies last year.

Further blurring the line between candidate and president, Trump departed the stage to the Rolling Stones’ “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” the same exit music he used during his campaign.

Bill Cosby will not face a barrage of accusers at trial

PHILADELPHIA – In a major break for Bill Cosby, a judge ruled Friday that just one of the comedian’s multitude of other accusers can testify at his trial to bolster charges he drugged and violated a woman more than a decade ago.

The 79-year-old TV star is set to go on trial in June, accused of sexually assaulting former Temple University employee Andrea Con- Bill Cosby stand at his suburban Philadelphia home in 2004. Prosecutors wanted to put 13 more women on the stand to show that his alleged conduct was part of a distinct pattern of behavior.

Montgomery County Judge Steven O’Neill disallowed all but one of those women, saying in a one-page ruling that he carefully weighed the possible value of their testimony against the potential prejudice to Cosby.

The one witness who can testify says the comic drugged and assaulted

her in 1996 at a Los Angeles hotel.

Cosby’s lawyer had no immediate comment, but the actor himself re-tweeted news stories on the ruling, adding the hashtags “#KeepWatching” and “#PayAttention.”

The judge’s decision is a setback for prosecutors and means the case will now rest more heavily on Constand’s credibility.

“There is an obvious value to the prosecution when you have numerous accusers. That alone adds tremendous weight to the case,” said lawyer Joseph McGettigan, a prosecutor in the Penn State sex abuse scandal.

The ruling could also shave weeks off the trial.

Cosby, who is free on $1 million bail, could get 10 years in prison if convicted. He is expected in court again Monday to ask that the jurors be selected from another county because of the heavy publicity.

Prosecutors compiled the list of 13 potential witnesses from the nearly 50 women who have come forward in recent years to say they were drugged and molested – a barrage that destroyed Cosby’s good-guy reputation as the star of TV’s “Cosby Show” in the 1980s.

“There’s a possibility some TIF [tax increment financing] money could be used for this since it will be used for economic development, but we hope the community gardens can play a role in neighborhood development,” Kenney said. “Our hope is that it would also generate job opportunities, training, NIU culinary experience, chances

for entrepreneurship and food truck revenue.”

The commercial kitchen was not explored in the feasibility study as thoroughly as a food hub, and a more structured and detailed study on the kitchen was recommended.

Kenney said he is looking into private grants to fund the project but didn’t have an estimated time on when a kitchen could begin operation.

“City staff has been very supportive of the project, and the way you build the strength of a local economy is by using your dollars to buy locally produced product like food,” he said.

WASHINGTON – The White House on Friday defended chief of staff Reince Priebus against accusations he breached a government firewall when he asked FBI Director James Comey to publicly dispute media reports that Trump campaign advisers had been frequently in touch with Russian intelligence agents.

President Donald Trump’s spokesman, Sean Spicer, argued Priebus had little choice but to seek Comey’s assistance in rebutting what Spicer said were inaccurate reports about contacts during last year’s presidential campaign. The FBI did not issue the statement requested by Priebus and has given no sign one is forthcoming.

“I don’t know what else we were supposed to do,” Spicer said.

The Justice Department has policies in place to limit communications between the White House and the FBI about pending investigations. Trump officials on Friday not only confirmed contacts between Priebus and the FBI, but engaged in an extraordinary public airing of those private conversations.

The FBI would not comment on the matter or verify the White House account. Friday’s revelations were the latest wrinkle in Trump’s already complicated relationship with the FBI and other intelligence agencies. He’s accused intelligence officials of releasing classified information about him to the media, declaring in a tweet Friday morning that the FBI was “totally unable to stop the national security ‘leakers’ that have permeated our government for a long time.”

House Democratic Leader Nancy Pelosi accused Priebus of “an outrageous breach of the FBI’s independence” and called on the Justice Department’s inspector general to look into all conversations Priebus and other White House officials have held with the FBI on ongoing investigations.

“The rule of law depends on the FBI’s complete independence, free from political pressure from the targets of its investigations,” Pelosi said.

A 2009 memo from then-Attorney General Eric Holder said the Justice Department is to advise the White House on pending criminal or civil investigations “only when it is important for the performance of the president’s duties and appropriate from a law enforcement perspective.”

Thumbs-up to return of frozen custard season

Thumbs-up: To one of the first signs of spring in DeKalb County. Ollie’s Frozen Custard in Sycamore opened for the season Wednesday. And what a day for it. Unseasonably mild temperatures led to lines around the building for much of the day. We welcome their return.

Thumbs-up: To Aleah Leman and the DeKalb-Sycamore co-op gymnastics team. Leman won two state titles – one in vault and the other on the bars – last weekend at the IHSA state gymnastics meet. The team finished second behind Prairie Ridge for the second year in a row. It wasn’t the state title that coach Andy Morreale and his team thought they had a good chance of winning, but it was another second-place showing for a team that is losing only two seniors. “I’m very proud of them,” Leman said of the team. “We get to take home a second big trophy and go home and celebrate, and I get to enjoy the last few hours with them as a team.” We’re proud of them too.

Thumbs-down: To AFSCME workers’ decision to authorize a strike. The union that represents 38,000 state workers wants pay increases and other benefits that would cost Illinois taxpayers another $3 billion over the life of the four-year contract.

State pensions are underfunded by almost $130 billion and there’s a backlog of unpaid bills totaling more than $11 billion. Taxpayers simply cannot afford it.

Thumbs-up: To employers coming to DeKalb County. On Thursday, more than 200 employers came to the Northern Illinois University Convocation Center looking to connect with recent and soon-to-be grads looking to join the workforce.

Not far away, 15 more employers set up at DeKalb County’s Community Outreach Building at a community job fair. The success of Northern Illinois University and of our community depends on job success. We hope many good connections were made that will lead to gainful employment.

Thumbs-up: To the end of a lawsuit. The city of Genoa announced this week it would pay $25,000 to the Regional Transit Authority – with its insurer paying another $250,000 – to settle a lawsuit filed by the Regional Transit Authority claiming that the city and oil and fuel distributor PetroLiance had conspired to deprive it of sales tax revenue using a sham sales office in the city. Genoa officials did not admit any wrongdoing, but it clearly was worth the money to make the legal problem go away, and for Genoa to hold on to its top sales-tax source. The settlement of the lawsuit removes some of the uncertainty that had led the city to keep revenue from its sales tax agreement with PetroLiance in an escrow account, and now everyone can move on.

Technology: Problem and solution for distracted driving With all our technological advancements in the vehicle arena, more people are dying in crashes than at almost anytime in history, according to the National Safety Council. The NSC estimates that 40,200 people died in automobile accidents in 2016, up 6 percent over 2015.

One of the reasons cited is distracted driving.

Many drivers hold their smartphones in higher regard than Gollum held his “precious” ring, constantly staring at its shimmering screen or picking it up whenever it beckons – even while steering a vehicle weighing several thousand pounds. The other reasons for a higher death toll have nothing to do with technology, but human behavior.

Speed and intoxication, with speed being the most contributing factor in highway fatalities even as actual crashes decrease in some states.

But can technology also act as savior? The answer is a qualified, “maybe.”

Technology exists and is on the market right now that can disable cellphone use, internet access, even game playing while in a moving vehicle but still allow the ability to make 911 calls.

Other features include reports of excessive

braking, cornering and speed. These type of apps are usually employed by parents. Nothing is foolproof, and it still needs some degree of human cooperation.

While Georgia law bans all cellphone use for drivers younger than age 18 and texting for everyone, all we have to do is look around to see how well that’s working. According to the National Occupant Protection Use Survey, at any given daylight moment across America, about 660,000 drivers are using cellphones or manipulating electronic devices while driving.

Car manufacturers are developing different technologies, from heads up displays to text messages read aloud over the vehicle’s speaker system and voice-activated replies.

Navigation units are becoming less expensive and more common in lower-priced vehicles with larger, clearer displays. And there has been an effort to have the government require phone makers or auto manufacturers build into their products systems that would automatically disable a cellphone’s ability to text or connect to the internet.

These weren’t lies. A few personal injury lawyers did have clients injured by coffee pots. One man’s skin peeled off after he played golf on a freshly sprayed course. The injuries were horrible.

But in terms of consumer protection, this “news” was irrelevant and misleading. It’s a big country. Rare and horrible things happen. I wised up eventually, realizing that those threats distract people from real threats, such as driving in the rain, drinking too much, smoking, etc.

But my peers continue to terrify people about trivial or nonexistent threats from power lines, hair dye, saccharin, NutraSweet, Teflon pans, electric blankets, computer terminals, cellphones, “killer” bees and more.

They win awards for it.

In 1999, the media said planes would crash because computers couldn’t handle the switch to the year 2000. Now they claim global warming will drown

us if we don’t honor meaningless climate treaties. They imply that polar bears are vanishing, although scientists studying 13 polar bear populations found “12 stable/increasing and one declining.”

On Feb. 17, Trump varied his attack, calling The New York Times, NBC, ABC, CBS and CNN “the enemy of the American people.”

Enemy?

Maybe Trump said that because he’s a narcissist who thinks he is “the American people” and the media run antagonistic headlines like: “Doomsday Clock Ticks 30 Seconds Closer to Global Annihilation Thanks to Trump, Scientists Say” – NBCNews. com “...Trump will Destroy the Environment...” – The Intercept “Trump Will Destroy Public Education If We Let Him” – Huffington Post op-ed “Is Donald Trump a Threat to Democracy?” – New York Times “How Trump’s Speech to the CIA Endangered America” – The Atlantic These claims are a mix of opinion and click-bait. All are possible. Trump could be the infantile, petulant authoritarian some of us fear. Terrible things may happen. But they haven’t yet, and much of what’s written deserves the label “fake news.”

The press is depressingly shallow.

They blow up little things, speculate about conspiracies and constantly obsess about “who’s winning?” Offensive remarks are taken out of context and amplified. Days later, it’s forgotten and the media move on to the next sensational accusation. They rarely explain the policies at stake, what those policies cost, past success or failure or the laws of economics.

As a result, we miss the real news: the big, important changes that happen slowly. Remember the coverage of the beginning of the women’s movement, the invention of the computer chip, Google, Facebook, etc.? No? That’s because there wasn’t any. But the growth of Facebook alone changed lives more than the election of any politician.

Wages rise – inflation-adjusted household income rose $7,000 over the past 30 years. But the media claim that the middle class and the poor get poorer.

We live longer than ever. Crime is down. But Americans are fearful and pessimistic because what they read and see on TV makes them believe life’s getting worse. When the media do that, they are indeed enemies of the people.

They must be directly involved in the choice of any administrators who will work under the new superintendent.

This is a key issue for the voters in this election. The selection and hiring of a new superintendent must wait until after the new board is in place.

City Council so that together they can provide the guidelines for professional staff to implement the agreed-upon policies.

Jerry understands that he must be the voice of the city’s residents. He will listen to the community, see where problems exist, and bring together the right people to work on solutions to those problems. Jerry is a proven leader who has shown the capacity in both his professional career and his wide volunteer experience to identify a broad segment of the community, set them a task and get them moving toward solutions.

This is what is needed in our city today.

While campaigning for mayor, Jerry has set himself the goal of meeting with people from every walk of life, from every segment of our community, from business, labor, university, governmental bodies and faith groups, to gather their views on how DeKalb can move forward. He will continue to reach out as our mayor.

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR Voters must have voice in new D-428 leaders

To the Editor: There are many ways in which the school board in a community serves its constituents. Various stakeholders in the community always seem to have different priorities.

But one priority that is above all others, and from which all the other priorities derive, is the job of finding, hiring and managing administrators who run the district and its schools.

It is the most important decision I could make as a school board member.

The voters of DeKalb-based District 428 will be given a choice in April: Do we stay on our present course, selecting board members who hire the usual brand of administrators, selected by the same disinvested search firms, who offer the same tired solutions to what have become profound problems in our schools?

Or do we, the voters, elect board members who will change the game plan?

Will we select board members who know the problems in the district and will seek administrators with proven experience in

solving those problems? Will we select board members who will work with those administrators in coming up with a timetable for solving those problems, and hold those administrators to that timetable?

That is the only way to effect real change in DeKalb.

I am running for school board because I know more of the same will not and should not be acceptable. We cannot stay on the same path.

I attended the District 428 school board meeting this week, where board members voted not to renew the DeKalb High School principal’s contract.

The new board must decide who will replace her. The voters need to be a part of that very important decision.

Also importantly, voters should be party to the decision as to who the new superintendent of schools should be. Clearly, the strong voices of the community should be listened to in shaping the future of our district. It is through this election that those voices will be heard.

“Fake News!” shouts our president, calling out CNN, The New York Times and others.

I love it.

Although it’s not really true – not the way President Donald Trump means it. The media rarely “fake” anything. Over time, they generally get the facts correct.

But the president makes a good point: The smug lamestream media spin left but won’t admit it.

At ABC News, my colleagues acted as if I was the only guy in the building with an opinion. Everyone else was “in the middle.” This was nonsense. Almost all were leftists. They constantly pushed big government. Their bias was revealed in questions they asked, the “experts” they chose to interview and their endless calls for political correctness and new regulation.

Unfortunately, Trump is now just as ridiculous, claiming that “crime is reaching record levels” when it’s half what it was 25 years ago. He claimed, “We had a very smooth rollout of the travel ban,” and that he had “the biggest Electoral College win since Reagan,” and so on.

This is absurd. Facts are facts.

Trump shouldn’t make things up.

But I still love his “Fake!” tweets because much of what media spew is misleading.

The No. 3 Timberwolves, leading by eight early, went cold in the second and third quarters, allowing No. 2 DePue to pull ahead for good in a 46-38 Giants’ win Friday in the championship game of the Class 1A Indian Creek Regional.

The Giants (26-3) started the game playing man defense, but coach Charlie Kleinfelter said he switched his team out of it once it fell behind 10-2 in the first 4:03 of the game.

“We wanted to play a man (defense) to see if we could keep with them, and we found out we couldn’t,” Kleinfelter said. “They were taking it to the basket, and we stopped one of their great shooters (leading scorer Trevor Guerra).

He’s tough, man. We held him in check, and that was what we needed to do.”

The Timberwolves lost, 46-38. who scored eight points and grabbed 10 rebounds for the Timberwolves. “We never gave up. That was something else we did today. We definitely left it all on the court. That’s all you can ask for.”

Indian Creek coach Joe Piekarz said although the Timberwolves did get some open looks at the basket – they shot 37.5 percent for the game – the DePue defense had a hand in forcing those misses.

“There’s a reason why they’re 26-3.

There’s a reason why they’re one of the best teams in the state,” Piekarz said.

“Give them credit. We just came up a little bit short.”

For the Giants, Kleinfelter said it was their first regional title in almost 30 years.

“When we went to that zone, my guys played tough defense,” Kleinfelter said. “My guys haven’t been playing the greatest lately. We don’t

have the greatest record, but I’ll tell you what, the kids came with a lot of heart tonight, came to the basket when we needed it, hit their shots. I wish we would have made our free throws down the stretch, but we’ve been waiting for this for a long time in DePue. “It’s fantastic for DePue; fantastic for these kids,” he said. “They’ve worked hard to get to where they’re at.

DePue is a basketball town.”

Indian Creek set the school record for wins in a season with 24, and although Piekarz said it doesn’t feel like much now, it will in the future.

“As they look back on this season, they’re going to see all the really great things we did,” Piekarz said. “Everybody enjoyed practice, everybody enjoyed being at games, everybody wanted to be a part of this. That sometimes is even more important than how far you get in the playoffs.”

Govig, who will be back next season for the Timberwolves, agreed.

“Seasons aren’t always judged by the win-loss column,” Govig said. “They’re judged by the passion and the fun you had with your teammates and the brothers you’ve become. I was blessed this season with these teammates.”

By the numbers: Jordal led the Timberwolves with 17 points, Guerra finished with 11. For the Giants, Rahim McKee-Strong scored nine points, but the 6-foot-6 center also grabbed 14 rebounds. Manny Winfert led the Giants with 12 points, and Eduardo Moreno added 11.

Beyond the stats: Jordal got a steal and a dunk with 7:34 left in the second quarter. Govig followed with eight straight points for the Timberwolves.

Guerra got a 3-pointer with 3:28 left – the first time since Jordal’s dunk someone other than Govig scored for Indian Creek, a span of 20:06.

They said it: “We were ready for the zone, and we got some open looks, we just didn’t finish that great tonight,” Piekarz said. “When they started man, we got a few easy layups, then just couldn’t put the ball in the basket for too long.”

sports@daily-chronicle.com SYCAMORE – Senior guard Ty Sulaver made only one two-point field goal in Friday night’s boys basketball game against Morris, but it was a big one.

Sulaver hit a short jumper with 1.8 seconds left to lift the Spartans to a 4645 win in the regular-season finale for both teams.

The Spartans (11-15 overall, 4-9 Northern Illinois Big 12 East) jumped out to a 25-9 lead in the second quarter, but Morris fought back and took the

lead with 9.9 seconds left. Sycamore coach Ryan Picolotti called a timeout and drew up a play.

“We ran it initially to get Jack (Mizgalski) the ball. He was going to drive and look to score. But if he couldn’t get it, then we were going to reverse the ball and get it to Ty and let him shoot,” Picolotti said. “He has had some nights where shots haven’t gone his way. He deserved that one to fall tonight.”

Sulaver finished with five points, going 3 of 6 from the free-throw line.

“I didn’t play particularly well, but I made the shot when it mattered,” Sulaver said. “It was a great team win.”

Senior forward Keyshawn Stallworth led the Spartans with 16 points and seven rebounds, five of which were offensive. Mizgalski added 11 points,

Boxley finished with 14 points, Stutzki 11 and Shaw 15. “[Shaw] is our best shooter; our best scorer,” Morris coach Joe Blumberg said. “He is the first guy on the scouting report of a lot of teams. I thought he played well tonight.”

Blackhawks acquire F Jurco in trade with Red Wings

CHICAGO – The Blackhawks acquired forward Tomas Jurco in a trade with the Detroit Red Wings. The Hawks sent a third-round pick in this year’s draft to Detroit for the 24-year-old Jurco, who has no points in 16 games with the Red Wings this season.

The Hawks also re-assigned forward Vinnie Hinostroza to the minors Friday.

Hinostroza has six goals and eight assists in 48 games with the Hawks.

Jurco was selected by Detroit in the second round of the 2011 draft.

The other topic Butler couldn’t avoid having to discuss was the idea of the Bulls in discussions to possibly trade him twice now since June, but also not promising anything to him long-term.

Several in the organization feel Butler could be moved this summer, and Paxson did little to downplay that.

“Right now, today, Jimmy is on our roster,” Paxson said. “And Jimmy is under contract for two more years. …

This league is fluid. And things can change quickly.”

Loyalty should work both ways, but Butler wasn’t going to get into that.

“I think I have one job to do, and it’s not to worry about whether someone is loyal or not,” Butler said. “It’s to go out there and hoop. I think they’re going to put us in the best position possible to win games here.

“What they’re doing is what they believe is right for this team. Our job is to go out there and make it work. Win games to the best or our ability. Loyalty, no loyalty, go out there and compete.”

So when the Bulls veteran was asked Friday whether the team was now worse off post-trade deadline, there was little hesitation in his reply.

“We’re [29-29],” Wade said. “It’s not like we’re 40-and-something.”

“The (new) guys are going to come in, they’re going to have to Dwyane Wade plug in and do their job and do what they can for this team. It will be different than what Taj (Gibson) brought and what Doug (McDermott) brought. From that standpoint, yeah, we’re going to miss those guys.”

Over the remaining 24 games in the regular season? Definitely. Against an 18-40 Phoenix team at the United Center? Not so much.

All Wade did in the overtime was score 10 points, while Butler added seven. But it was Butler who helped get it to overtime, nailing a 3-pointer to tie the score with 48.2 seconds left in regulation, and then a 13-foot fadeaway with 9.1 seconds.

by Wade on a 3-point attempt.

It didn’t hurt that rookie Denzel Valentine chipped in 15 points, while Nikola Mirotic had 20.

And as far as the new guys acquired from Oklahoma City for Gibson and McDermott, Anthony Morrow and Joffrey Lauvergne didn’t see a minute of action, while point guard Cameron Payne was inactive because of an illness.

Coach Fred Hoiberg said he still was not sure how they would be worked in or how quickly, but he was excited to start the process.

So was Payne, who was the main piece for the Bulls in the deal.

“Especially because I’m a point guard, I have to learn so much,” Payne said. “And defensive-wise, I’ve only been on one side of the spectrum. I’ve only been with the Thunder all my career, so coming over here it’s going to be something new. I feel like I can pick up on it fast. I’m going to be ready to listen.”

For another day: The fact that general manager Gar Forman and VP of basketball operations John Paxson now are stressing “the process of getting

younger,” didn’t get past Wade’s ears.

The 35-year-old was asked if he felt the front office even wanted him back next year, especially because Wade controls the option, and replied, “I don’t know, I haven’t had that conversation about next season with the guys.”

Wade said he would look at what would be best for him when the time comes.

“I think we all understood when I came here I signed a two-year deal with a one-year option, and both sides wanted it that way,” Wade said. “And when the time came, no matter the teammates I had and the season we had, it was going to be my option. I take my option seriously.”

New No. 1 in town: Michael Carter-Williams took Derrick Rose’s jersey No. 1 when he first was acquired from Milwaukee in training camp, and quickly switched to No. 7 when he heard the negative feedback from the Rose apologists still alive and well.

Newly acquired Morrow didn’t seem to be bothered by that type of potential blowback, announcing that he would wear No. 1.

CHICAGO – On Friday, Jimmy Butler made sure to say all the right things.

Lesson learned from January, when he and teammate Dwyane Wade – at least in the eyes of the Bulls organization – said all the wrong things when they called their teammates out.

Hit Butler with a fine once, shame on Gar/Pax. Look to fine him twice? He’s not going to allow that to even happen.

So when asked about the Thursday comments from VP of basketball operations John Paxson, Butler played the role of good soldier.

It was after the Bulls announced a trade that sent out Doug McDermott and Taj Gibson, as well as a 2018 second-round draft pick, to Oklahoma City for Cameron Payne, Joffrey Lauvergne and Anthony Morrow that Paxson went out of his way to point out that Butler was just a piece for the Bulls, not THE piece.

“I’ve always felt this way about team building and a team in general:

this game, you build with players, not around one.”

Many organizations would differ from that opinion.

Privately, sources have indicated that Butler differs from that opinion.

But he was willing to dance the dance with his bosses Friday.

“No, I don’t,” Butler said, when asked if he took those comments of simply being a piece to build with personally. “No organization is the same. Everybody has different personnel. I don’t care if anybody wants to build around me. Just win. At the end of the day, when you win, everything is fine, whether you’re built around or not built around. Everybody’s happy. All of that is just background AP photo noise. I just want to win at all costs.”

That idea was a much tougher sell for Bulls forward Jimmy Butler scores in front of Suns defender Alex Len during the first Wade, however. Then again, three NBA half of Friday night’s game at the United rings speaks with a bit more volume.

Heyward hungry to learn, improve

bmiles@dailyherald.com MESA, Ariz. – Jason Heyward returned to his locker Friday morning and peeled off his batting gloves after an early morning hitting session.

That was even before the Cubs took to the field for their stretching routine and the regularly scheduled workout.

Heyward is looking to bounce back from a tough year at the plate, and because so much about hitting deals with “feel,” as much as mechanics, he said “It feels good,” when asked how his swing feels.

“I don’t have to think,” he continued, “just be able to make adjustments on the fly as you want to do every day, next pitch, whatever. You just want to find some consistency and some stability in it.”

Everybody knows the story.

Heyward signed an eight-year, $184 million contract with the Cubs in December 2015. The Cubs wanted the whole package: Heyward’s hitting, his Gold Glove defense and his leadership.

“You just start somewhere,” he said earlier in spring training. “It’s sounds funny, but you just start somewhere. As far as what I was looking at going

into the offseason, what coach Mallee and (Hinske) were looking at was 2012, as far as just the mechanics and the freedom that I had and how I was tension-free, relaxed at the plate, and I did a good job of getting myself in position to hit.

“That’s the name of hitting, being in a good position to hit.

Give yourself an opportunity.

Give yourself some air. That’s all we worked on, just being in a good position to hit, being tension-free, relaxed up there, find some comfort in that and go from there. There’s no per-

fect swing. You’re going to have to fight off pitches. When the pitcher makes their pitch, they make their pitch. It’s just about giving yourself an opportunity to hit and do some damage.”

If there’s one thing Heyward has going for him, it’s his work ethic.

“I enjoy working,” he said. “I enjoy practice. I love practice. If there’s anything I notice about myself, growing up different than some other people, it was just I love to practice more than anyone. That’s always been me.

People ask, ‘Oh, did you take a break or whatever?’ Yeah, I had a normal offseason as far as that goes. Just work hard, work smart, like anybody else.”

What impressed the Cubs was that Heyward never took his performance at the plate out into right field with him, as evidenced by a fourth Gold Glove. And of course, his speech during the rain delay in Cleveland during Game 7 of the World Series is now the stuff of legend.

Cubs manager Joe Maddon continues to say Heyward’s defense and professionalism brought value to the team last

year.

“That’s what I was talking about all last year,” Maddon said. “Everybody’s focused on his batting average, and I know that’s how our game is played.

But if you have the privilege of being with him in the clubhouse and in the dugout, I get something entirely different: baserunning, defense, throwing ability, accuracy.

“And just as a teammate, I’ve talked about this before, and you’ve all seen it when they come off the field from the outfield, they’ll gather in front of the dugout (and do) the little high-five with the gloves with each other. Love it. That’s the kind of stuff that can really build positive momentum.”

So, is he living proof that anyone can improve?

“Am I living proof? Everybody’s living proof,” he said.

“That’s the game of baseball.

That’s sports. Especially this game, I’ve heard it from Hall of Famers. I’ve heard if from guys in their first year: You can never stop learning if you’re hungry and eager to learn. There’s always something to learn in this game, which makes it fun.”

Cubs, Strop agree to contract extension

bmiles@dailyherald.com MESA, Ariz. – Pedro Strop’s career took a turn for the better when he was traded to the Cubs from the Baltimore Orioles in July 2013.

On Friday, the Cubs and Strop decided to continue their relationship through at least the 2018 season. The two sides recently avoided salary arbitration by agreeing on a contract for this year worth $5.5 million. The extension pays Strop $5.85 million in 2018.

There is a club option for $6.25 million for 2019 or a buyout worth $500,000.

Strop, 31, came to the Cubs in the same deal that brought starting pitcher Jake Arrieta to Chicago. The Cubs gave up pitcher Scott Feldman and catcher Steve Clevenger.

In his time with the Cubs, Strop is 8-14 with a 2.68 ERA, six saves and a WHIP of 0.98. He could have become a free agent after this season.

“That was really, really, really good at that point because I wasn’t getting an opportunity to pitch back in Baltimore because I was through a bad stretch,” Strop said of the trade to the Cubs. “I wasn’t pitching the way I pitch; I was struggling a little bit. I wasn’t being given an opportunity to get back on track.

“So by the time they traded me over here, as soon as I got here, I Pedro Strop worked with (bullpen coach) Lester Strode and (pitching coach Chris) Bosio, and they put me in the right way, and I got the opportunity to get back on track here.”

Last year, Strop was 2-2 with a 2.85 ERA and a WHIP of 0.89 in 54 games as a setup man. He was on the disabled list from Aug. 11 to Sept. 23 after suffering a meniscus tear in his left knee.

He worked in eight postseason games, including three in the World Series.

Strop is one of the more popular players in the Cubs’ clubhouse.

“His pitching is big part of why we wanted to bring him back, but also who he is,” general manager Jed Hoyer said. “I think he has a leadership role on this team. He’s been terrific in the clubhouse for us. He’s terrific in the bullpen. He’s the kind of guy you want to keep around.

Celebrating in Mesa: The Cubs and the city of Mesa held a championship rally Friday at Sloan Park. Fans began lining up outside of the ballpark Thursday afternoon for a chance to have their photos taken with the World Series trophy.

Manager Joe Maddon was given a key to the city of Mesa.

“I was a resident here from 1981 until maybe 2001,” Maddon said, referring to his days in the Angels organization. “With the Cubs, I think of HoHoKam and Fitch Park (the team’s former spring facilities) … My kids have grown up here. They love it here.

They don’t want to leave. I’ve got my grandkids here now. I cut my teeth here. This is where I learned my trade.

“I have a real, real, strong connection to all of this, where it began and where it is right now. It’s quite a distance.”

GLENDALE, Ariz. – Mark Buehrle said he was “blown away and floored” by the White Sox’s decision to retire his number, an honor the popular lefthander still is trying to wrap his head around.

He also is trying to cope with the thought of making a speech in front of what should be – based on his immense popularity as a player – a big crowd when the Sox pay tribute to him before the team hosts the Athletics on June 24.

“I’m just trying to not pass out from thinking I’ve got to get up there and do a speech,’’ Buehrle said. “You think I’m joking, I’m not.”

That’s Buehrle, humble, down-toearth ordinary guy, consummate pro and fan favorite who performed at a high level year in and year out with less than spectacular stuff. Keeping a low profile on his farm in Missouri, Buehrle hasn’t talked to media since pitching his last game for the Blue Jays at the end of the 2015 season.

Buehrle made his mark with the Sox, making nine Opening Day starts in 10 seasons, pitching a no-hitter and

to have his number retired. He talked with reporters on a conference call Friday.

“I’ve been joking around with friends saying my jersey is going to be up there next to (Hall of Famer) Frank Thomas,” Buehrle said.

Buehrle said he misses the camaraderie of the clubhouse and teammates but hasn’t missed playing as much as he thought he would, mostly because his wife, Jamie, two children and four dogs have kept him busy at home.

He knew for some time, he said, that his career would be over when his contract was up in Toronto.

“A big part of it was missing the family. They weren’t up in Toronto the whole season, and I think that just kind of drained on me,” he said. “The reason I didn’t say anything, I didn’t want all the attention.”

He came into baseball as a 38thround draft pick by the Sox. “Kind of snuck into the big leagues, and I wanted to kind of sneak my way out,” he said.

The attention June 24 will be unavoidable, however.

“I just did what I was supposed to do, had fun with it and lived every day like

He’s not ready to call himself a favorite, and thinks he’ll have his hands full with the Joe Gibbs Racing group and Penske drivers Joey Logano and Brad Keselowski.

“Watching the last several plate races, I think the Gibbs guys have the market cornered on the favorite,” he said. “The Penske guys are really strong. So I think it’s their race to lose.

The Hendrick cars are going to be up there trying to mix it up.”

In an effort to add excitement to the racing – something both the TV partners and Monster wanted – all events will be run in segments this year. It means the Daytona 500 won’t exactly be a 500-mile race of attrition, but will instead be cut into three parts. There are points on the line for each segment, giving drivers incentive to race hard for the entire race, and one final long push to the checkered flag.

DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. – The good news for NASCAR is that all signs indicate Dale Earnhardt Jr. has a legitimate shot to win the Daytona 500.

A victory for NASCAR’s most popular driver, in his return to racing after a concussion sidelined him the second half of last season, would be a massive boost for the sagging series. Earnhardt’s star power has been one of the bright spots of Speedweeks and his strength on the track has been obvious every time he’s behind the wheel of his Chevrolet.

Earnhardt was part of a Hendrick Motorsports qualifying sweep for Sunday’s season-opening race. Chase Elliott won the pole, and Earnhardt will line up next to him on the starting grid. Elliott added a win in a qualifying race, and Earnhardt led 53 of 60 laps in a second qualifying race before he was passed at the end.

So the Hendrick cars have speed, the drivers aren’t cowering from the Toyota teamwork that dominated last year’s race, and they are ready to go bumperto-bumper with the Team Penske fleet.

It means Sunday could be a strong opening day for NASCAR, particularly

without a hitch.

The series is under heavy scrutiny because of sliding attendance and TV ratings, plus the title sponsor deal with Monster Energy came in at a fraction of what NASCAR was looking for when it began shopping the naming rights almost two years ago.

NASCAR celebrated its deal with Monster in a Las Vegas announcement, and has hitched its wagon to the hope that Monster can attract a younger demographic and raise the excitement level at all the events. But there was little signage around the track during Speedweeks, and one of the few indications Monster is the new sponsor were the scantily clad women around for some of the pomp and circumstance. There’s been no TV advertising and NASCAR was even the subject of a critical examination in the Wall Street Journal.

NASCAR has countered with a JGR announcement that defending race winner Denny Hamlin and FedEx have signed long-term extensions, while Team Penske locked in Logano and Shell-Pennzoil through 2023.

Walking a heart-healthy exercise Dear Doctor: My New Year’s resolution was to get more exercise and, I hope, lose a few pounds.

Walking is an activity I know I can stick with, but I keep hearing that I should aim for 10,000 steps a day.

Where does that number come from, and am I wasting my time if I do less?

Dear Reader: In the battle to sit less and move more, you’ve already nailed the crucial element – picking an activity that will survive the inevitable day that your New Year’s fervor wears off.

Walking is a great option – it’s easy, inexpensive and low-impact, and can be done just about anywhere. Best of all, walking has multiple health benefits.

Walking will do more than just help you control your weight. In fact, even if you don’t lose any weight at all, you’ll still come out ahead.

People who are physically active lower their risk of stroke, heart disease, type 2 diabetes, depression and even some cancers.

Bottom line – they live longer.

For optimal health benefits, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention say we should spend at least 150 minutes per week doing a moderately paced aerobic activity for no less than 10 minutes at a stretch. (Or 75 minutes a week of vigorous physical activity, but that’s an answer to a different question.)

Those 150 minutes of moderate activity can absolutely be spent in your chosen method – walking – as long as it’s at a brisk pace.

Three to four miles an hour is about right for most of us. That’s fast enough so that your heart gets pumping, yet you’re still able to carry on a conversation.

Which brings us to the question of distance, and the mystery of the 10,000 steps.

ASK THE DOCTORS Elizabeth Ko and Eve Glazier It turns out that this goal dates back to the mid-1960s, when a pedometer sold in Japan was marketed as “manpo-kei,” which translates to “10,000 steps meter.”

More than 50 years later, we’re still in thrall to that clever bit of advertising.

But those 10,000 steps – that’s about five miles – had a toehold in science. A study at the time found that men who burned 2,000 calories per week through exercise measurably lowered their risk of heart disease.

Since a five-mile walk uses roughly 300 calories, to burn 2,000 calories a week takes 10,000 steps.

Is 10,000 steps a make-or-break number from the outset? The short answer is no. Any amount of physical activity above and beyond what you’re presently doing is beneficial. The main thing is to ease into your new exercise program in a way that’s both safe and sustainable.

Begin with a comfortable pace and a reasonable distance. Maybe that’s a 10-minute walk around the block or a brisk two miles to work. Challenge yourself to go a bit farther each week.

Whether you’re taken with the symmetry of 10,000 steps, or prefer the CDC’s recommendation of 150 minutes of exercise a week, what matters most is that you get – and stay – moving.

A British show I really enjoyed that ran for six seasons was “Goodnight, Sweetheart.” It was about someone living in the 1990s in London, who accidentally finds a time portal that transports him back to 1942, in the middle of World War II. He travels back and forth between the two time periods.

Declarer has four losers (two hearts and two clubs) and only nine winners (six spades, one heart and two diamonds). He must establish dummy’s diamond suit, but that requires ruffing diamonds in his hand and being able to return to the dummy twice. South needs to be careful with the spade king and queen.

Declarer should win the first trick, cash the spade ace, play off dummy’s top diamonds and ruff a diamond high in hand. He leads a trump to dummy’s queen, ruffs a diamond high, plays a spade to dummy’s king (drawing West’s last trump) and discards a heart or a club on the diamond six.
