Pictured is the new park office and maintenance shed at Green Valley State Park. The office and shed were transitioned to Green Valley State Park in mid-June, after the previous buildings were demolished and the new buildings were assembled. Inside the building is an open vestibule for patrons to get information, open office space for employees, bathroom, closet and break room.

About two months ago, Alan Carr, park ranger at Green Valley State Park, and his fellow employees were finally able to use an upgraded park office and attached maintenance shed located west of the campgrounds. “The (Iowa State) Parks Bureau aims to update park facilities, like a couple park buildings, throughout the state. We were just really lucky to be selected to be one of the parks to be renovated recently,” said Daniel Stull, park technician with Green Valley State Park.
Construction on the office and shed began in October 2015, when the previous park office was demolished, as well as buildings housing an old shop, district storage shed, which was relocated to Cold Springs State Park in Lewis, and small wood shed located near the gravel parking lot. This came after a decision from Iowa State Parks Bureau to build a new park office with attached shed, as well as fixing a cold-storage shed, instead of erecting the new buildings separately. Green Valley State Park is about 60 years old, about the same age as other state parks across the state. This means a lot of other state
parks are also vying for money from the Iowa Department of Natural Resources to do improvements. “Our other buildings were definitely showing their age. The floors in them were degrading and cracked. It wasn’t flat anymore, so it was a hazard,” Carr said. “The building itself was going to need some m a j o r r e p a i r s . Carr ... It’s a much safer environment now.” Green Valley State Park took possession of the new
buildings in mid-June. Because summer is the busy season for the park and campground, employees have not quite updated the park office. “It was a pretty big project with the shop facility and park office,” Carr said. “It was a complete makeover of this whole complex here.”
Specs The complex of new buildings and repairs cost about $750,000 total. This project occurred during the renovation of the trails at Green Valley, as well as the installment of a new shower building and sewer repair. The park office is made of OFFICE | 2A
More than $165,000 in security upgrades will be installed in the Creston Community School District buildings, the school board decided Monday. In July, the board approved a bid for a new security camera system as part of a $600,000 security plan. Monday, the board approved a bid of $86,987.51 for a new telephone system and $79,724 bid to install access controls to the district’s buildings. Access controls will be installed on six doors at Creston Elementary/Middle School, seven doors at the high school and seven doors at the administration building. “The main entries will be buzzer doors and a few additional doors will be electronic fob entry for staff,” McDermott said. “Sensors will be put on all other exterior doors so that back at the home computer, we can tell McDermott if doors have been left open or propped open. That’s for every door in the district.”
Some doors will be capped, meaning the keyhole will now have a metal cap placed over the top of it, restricting entry through that door. Keys will no longer be used at all. Instead, people will need either an electronic fob to enter through a door or they will need to buzz in at the main entrances. Installation on the exterior door controls will begin shortly after school starts with a target completion date of Oct. 31. The new security camera system approved at the July board meeting will be installed in a two- or threephase transition with the first phase of installation targeted for completion by the end of November. The exterior door controls and security cameras will work together. “I’ll be able to sit this evening and pull up any camera view in any building and see it on my phone,” McDermott said. “And, (Creston Police Chief) Paul Ver Meer and his staff will be able to do the same thing.” “That will be nice, because if you got a call and said it looks like something’s going on, you’ll be able to check it out,” said Galen Zumbach, Creston school board member. McDermott said the new security upgrades will be an SCHOOLS | 2A
Judge tosses flag desecration charge; was pipeline protest DES MOINES (AP) — A flag desecration charge was dropped Monday for a man who protested a crude oil pipeline that crosses his property by hanging an American flag upside down at his home, online court records show. Homer Martz, 63, was charged Friday under a state law that makes it illegal to defile, cast contempt upon, satirize or deride a flag. That law, however, was declared unconstitutional by a federal judge in December 2014 and state prosecutors were told not to enforce it. The law, which lawmakers
have not removed from the books, says law enforcement officers have a duty “to enforce the provisions of this chapter, and for failure to do so they may be removed as by law provided.” Calhoun County Attorney Tina Meth Farrington filed a motion to dismiss the charge Monday, saying that she read the 2014 federal ruling and concluded she shouldn’t pursue the charge. “The Legislature should take immediate action to repeal this law so that other citizens and law enforcement FLAG | 2A
