Iowa panel OKs gun bill with stand-your-ground provision DES MOINES (AP) â Iowa would have a standyour-ground provision and make other sweeping changes to its gun laws under a bill approved Thursday by a Republican-led legislative panel. The roughly 40-page bill, introduced this week, includes a range of proposals in how Iowa would regulate the use of firearms. Some aspects of the bill have appeared in other proposed
legislation over the years, but those attempts were halted by Democrats who held legislative control. Republicans won majority control of both chambers of the Legislature in the Nov. 8 election, and that dynamic makes passage of the legislation more likely. A three-member subcommittee of the House Judiciary Committee signed off the bill, which would remove background
check restrictions on private handgun purchases and allow people to carry concealed weapons without a permit. It would also stop colleges from banning weapons on campus, allow firearm permits to last a lifetime, prohibit local governments from passing gun restrictions and allow children under age 14 to use handguns with supervision from a parent. The bill would also allow guns on

WASHINGTON CURRENTLY? Iâm working on issues to make sure our veteransâ crisis line is always answered. We had some real problems with the veteransâ crisis line not being answered and we want to make sure veterans and their families, who are going through some real emotional wounds, are having their phone calls answered. Weâre losing 20some veterans a day to suicide. We have to make sure those services are there for them. Making sure we have a strong rural economy is important to me. Looking at all aspects of that â agriculture, making sure housing needs are met, transportation needs are met and making sure regulations, although wellintended, are common sense and that theyâre helping us, not hurting us.
the Capitol grounds. Rep. Matt Windschitl, R-Missouri Valley and a vocal supporter of gun rights, said the bill was subject to change and he would take recommendations from the subcommittee meeting to his caucus. âOur intent is to protect Iowans at all cost,â he said. âThis will allow Iowans more freedoms and the GUN | 2A

Approximately 40 percent of the county budget is dedicated to wages, similar to the percentage in FY2017. Another large portion of the budget is dedicated to secondary roads, at about $3.75 million. âThatâs where we have the BUDGET | 2A
⢠IN YOUR OPINION, WHATâS
THE BIGGEST ISSUE FACING OUR NATION RIGHT NOW? We have a $20 trillion debt right now. That is embarrassing. Itâs horrible. I donât know how much longer we can sustain it. So, we have to do in D.C. what we do in Iowa. That is, we recognize thereâs a problem and regardless of party affiliation at home, we come to the table and figure out how to fix it. Sometimes the solutions arenât always that easy, but we have to recognize itâs a serious issue. We donât need to be handing this down to the next generation. Itâs a national security issue, as well.

Union County Board of Supervisors have a scheduled public hearing for 10 a.m. March 6 in the Union County Courthouse before voting on the recommended county budget for fiscal year 2018 (FY2018). The tax levy for the upcoming budget is 12.50133 per $1,000 valuation. âI look at the numbers and see how they add up. But the upshot of it is, the valuations in the county went up, what property is worth, the valuation total raised,â said Dennis Brown, b o a r d president. Brown âSo we were able to lower our levy. Itâs going to be almost 11 cents lower than last year.â While the tax levy decreased, the tax asking increased. The tax asking
million, and FY2018 is more than $12.5 million. Just because the tax levy decreased does not mean a personâs taxes decrease. âWe try to keep our levies down, or keep it steady, and depending on what other taxing entities do, your taxes could go up,â said Union County Auditor Sandy Hysell. Hysell said the countyâs ranking for highest tax levy has slowly decreased, despite having a smaller amount of townships throughout the county, causing less valuation than other counties. âWe keep coming down every year. At one point, we were No. 1. Now weâre at 5 or 6,â Hysell said.
