Vol. 11 No. 14
Tricks, treats ... and safety On Monday, Oct. 31, area children, disguised as Super Heroes, ghosts and goblins, will be out and about, searching for Halloween treats throughout area neighborhoods. While there is sure to be a host of haunted fun throughout the evening in nearly every town in Bureau County, there are some easy safety precautions parents should take when their excited children take to the streets on Halloween night. According to www.safekids.org, children under 12 should not be alone or without adult supervision when trick or treating. Those who are mature enough to be out alone should stick to familiar areas in well-lit areas and travel in groups. Children should be reminded to only cross the street at the corners and to walk on sidewalks. If there are no sidewalks, children should walk facing traffic as far to the left as possible. Nobody — children or adults — should be using electronic devices. Costumes and treat bags should have reflective tape or stickers on them, and if possible, children should dress in light colors. Face paint or makeup are safer than a mask, and glow sticks or flashlights help motorists to see children as they scurry from home to home. We wish everyone a safe and happy Halloween. IVS file photo
