Erin go Bragh! Debbie Lindberg, activities director at the Bureau County Senior Center, trims the tree at the center with shamrocks and green beads in the spirit of St. Patrick’s Day. Lindberg puts in the extra effort to bring her creative touch to the senior center to help put fun and celebration into each holiday. St. Patrick’s Day is celebrated this year on Tuesday, March 17. St. Patrick is known as the patron saint of Ireland, even though he was not born in Ireland. Through the years, he has become an integral part of the Irish heritage, mostly through his service across Ireland of the 5th Century. While St. Patrick’s Day is near and dear to the hearts of the Irish and Irish descendants, it’s been said that everyone is Irish on St. Patrick’s Day. A host of traditions accompany this fun holiday, including the wearing of green. Shamrocks are also important. Legend has it that St. Patrick used the three-leafed shamrock to symbolize the Christian Holy Trinity, however, it’s never been validated. Popular activities for St. Patrick’s Day across Bureau and Putnam counties are seeking out that favorite restaurant that serves corned beef and cabbage, usually accompanied with potatoes and carrots. And of course, many establishments serve up a river of green beer to host the fun-filled day. IV Scene photo/Goldie Currie
