Exercise your way into the new year Larry Ruggeri of Granville swims at the Hennepin Park District’s indoor pool twice a week to stay in shape. Both Hennepin and the Bureau County Metro Center’s indoor pools are a resource area residents use to exercise and stay healthy. Water’s buoyancy accommodates the unfit, as well as the fit. Swimming is a good, whole-body exercise that has low impact for people with arthritis, musculoskeletal or weight limitations. The water cushions stiff joints or fragile bones that might be injured by the impact of land exercises. People who exercise by swimming use all the major muscle groups that includes shoulders, back, abdominal, legs, hips and glutes. Water also has 12 times the resistance as air in every direction, so it assists the body to build strength. Swimming also addresses cardiovascular and strengthening at the same time. Not many workouts on land have that benefit when exercising, according to www.webmd.com. IV Scene photo/Dixie Schroeder
