member-owned, we care about our members and strive to provide excellent member service by building relationships with them. Our vision is to change people’s lives to make our community prosper. Earthmover Credit Union is always looking out for the best interest of each member. For example, if we do not think it is in the member’s best interest to refinance here, we will advise them of that. That is the credit union difference. Earthmover has very competitive rates on loans and Visa credit cards. Two of Earthmover’s Visa Credit Cards earn ScoreCard points where they can redeem them for merchandise or travel anytime of the year. Our credit union members also get discounts to large retail companies, such as Sprint, Six Flags Great America and more, because they are credit union members. For more information on how to become a member or more about our services, please visit our website. Earthmover is an equal housing opportunity lender. By member vote in February 1998, our members’ deposits are insured up to $250,000 per share type by American Share Insurance, the nation’s largest private insurers. t Bob Jass Chevrolet, customer satisfaction isn’t just a nice idea, it’s a total way of doing business. “Our goal is to have our customers 100% satisfied, 100% of the time,” says Ryan Easter, general manager. “We have guidelines in place from General Motors that we need to follow, but it’s much more than just a set of rules. We know our customers and they know us. Some of them are second- and third-generation buyers. They deserve our best, and that’s what we work to give. Every time.” Both sales and service staff participate in GM training, which must be completed every quarter. Additionally, members of management have trained at Disney University — a customer satisfaction training program offered to businesses of all kinds. “I knew it would be interesting to see what the training would be like, but the Disney concept of customer satisfaction is all-encompassing,” said Mary Jo Peterson, office manager. “We really learned about what it takes to offer an exceptional customer satisfaction experience in every department.” Dan Schwebke, general sales manager, concurs. “If your customers aren’t completely satisfied, you need to look at your processes. No matter what your business is, there is always room for improvement.”

C

hances are that you have some sort of personal connection with the senior living industry. Either a grandparent, parent, aunt, or someone you know is either in a senior living community, or really should be. The industry has been around for a long time. But the quality of care has been stuck in the 1960s and has not kept up with times. Even though we call them communities, they are still run like institutions. No wonder our elders do not want to join any of them. After visiting more than 100 assisted living and memory care communities, Nader Kameli became convinced that a completely new approach was desperately needed— a more human approach. Kameli is CEO of Bright Oaks Group, an innovative assisted living company based in Illinois. “People do not want to lose control of their lives and become part of a pre-programmed life that is decided for them by strangers. I do not blame them. Would you want this for yourself?” Kameli said. To create Bright Oaks’ new concept of senior living, Nader and his colleagues went straight to the source, talking with hundreds of older adults and observing their way of life. From those who were happy, excited and energetic, learning what made them that way; and from those who were lonely and unengaged in life, learning what pushed them in that state of living. What emerged from the study was that social contact, purpose to wake-up in the morning, going to bed feeling good about the choices they made that day, and experiences they gathered as a result of those choices, gave life its meaning. This learning resulted in creation of a new way of living together at Bright Oaks. “What truly sets us apart is our new concept of Purposeful Family Living, in which we bring people together as members of one family—not as residents, care providers, or employees—and give them control to live life the way it should be,” he said. in a household with others who feel that life is good and living is exciting. Bright Oaks leadership is certain that Purposeful Family Living can slow age-related decline and sometimes even reverse some of its effects, based on scientific evidence that shows higher quality of life comes from social stimulation and engagement, not medication and isolation. Bright Oaks is not a hotel, nor is it a holding place for the elderly. It is literally a community of neighborhoods, home to exceptional people of all ages. Bright Oaks families live together, work together and play together every day, sharing history and experiences with others, enriching everyone’s lives in the process. That’s why Bright Oaks communities are called Assisted Independence— because they provide independence at all times, with assistance on demand. Living as family at Bright Oaks comes with certain social responsibilities, just as within one’s own family. Younger, extended family members help their elders with physical challenges; older, wiser members offer the next generation the benefit of their wisdom and experience. “Most of all, everyone must respect others and appreciate the value they bring to the family,” Kameli said. All Bright Oaks communities offer the very latest in design, home-style architecture and lush landscaping, with meals served family-style, and amenities and luxuries to meet each family member’s needs and expectations. But what is truly unique at Bright Oaks is the way people live together, having control of their lives, and being there for each other as family members would. At Bright Oaks, memory challenges are addressed with the latest understanding that comes from the body of knowledge in this industry and the field of neuropsychology, and services that are designed to make life more comfortable and still rewarding. It is not enough to offer safety and security to residents. As a place to live life, Bright Oaks brings continued life enrichment to residents of our New Journeys, that excites their day, calms their senses and exercises their mind. rowing up in North Aurora Dan started his agency in the basement of his home on Farview Drive. Now as he celebrates his 30th year in business, his agency is now located in Sugar Grove. Although Dan resides in Sugar Grove, North Aurora will always be considered home to him. In May of 2011, Dan Borowiak of Sugar Grove was diagnosed with prostate cancer. After a 10-week journey that included a stay at Mayo Clinic and took him to Loma Linda, Calif., doctors found proton therapy was Dan’s best option to beat this deadly disease. While Dan was away, he found out that the dedication he had for his insurance business was ingrained throughout his employees, who not only ran his Sugar Grove-based

business in his absence, they handled everything without a hiccup. “I not only had my family for support, but my insurance family (staff, clients and companies) behind me through prayer,” Dan said. Dan has been in the insurance business for 30 years, having started out with American Family for his first seven years. Deciding he needed to offer more than one option for his customers, since everyone does not have all the same needs, Dan began representing quality companies like Pekin, AAA, West Bend, Travelers, Progressive, Frankenmuth and Hartford as an independent agent. “Over the years of being in the insurance business, I have come to appreciate how the insurance profession has been able to help

individuals and business put their lives back together in a time of need,” Dan said. “We are dedicated to serving our clients with honesty and building relationships with them at the same time.” Offering auto, home, business, health, life, disability, bonds and recreational insurance, the team at Dan Borowiak Insurance Agency is always available to take you step-by-step to determine your needs in regards to coverage. Dan Borowiak Insurance Agency is located at 720 Heartland Drive in Sugar Grove, and is open Monday through Friday, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. To inquire about a specific policy, feel free to reach out to Dan at (630) 466-8900, email him at Dan@ Danbinsurance.com or visit www. riginally founded in 1984, Kirhofer’s Sports began as a retail destination and has grown these past 32 years into a primary provider of uniforms, apparel and equipment for teams, schools, leagues and organizations. What makes Kirhofer’s Sports unique is their dual retail-team sales combination at their west Aurora location. The idea behind this, and factoring in testimonials from both new and long-time customers, is the increase in accessibility people enjoy whenever they need to call with a question or stop in and peruse their team sales room, complete with manufacturer catalogs and samples to help ease the ordering process.

The same can be said of their retail associates, all of whom are young sports athletes and enthusiasts with knowledge of current products and trends. Together, everyone does their part to make sure all customers, no matter if you’re embroidering a jacket, fitting shoes for your basketball team or ordering 500 shirts for a school event, receive the attention only a small business like theirs can provide. “We’re always trying to build upon this longstanding reputation and look forward to many more years of being your neighborhood friend in the sporting goods world!”

Owner Doug Kirhofer and the sales department truly speak to the enjoyment of working in this industry. Once athletes and coaches themselves, Kirhofer’s salesmen recall the excitement of ordering new uniforms and apparel and share that enthusiasm when working with their clients.

ALEXANDER LUMBER:

Over 125 years of building communities

A

lexander Lumber is a family-owned company with a heritage of quality, service and commitment to both trade professionals and local homeowners. Their founder, John Alexander came to the United States from Scotland, and opened his first lumberyard in Aurora, Illinois in 1891. He sought to expand his lumber operation and was provided the opportunity when the railroads started reaching out west. John was able to negotiate a series of land leases with the railroads setting lumberyards at close intervals along the line. By the late 1920s, he operated well over 100 so-called “line yards.” The family business expanded rapidly as the years went by, both John’s son, John Jr, and his grandson Walter, became involved.

“We feel the values that have allowed us to operate for 125 years align very closely with the values that the people of our communities have come to expect and who they choose to do business with,” says District Manager, Greg Kimbrell. Alexander Lumber is more than a lumberyard. At their 20 locations throughout Illinois and Wisconsin, they are a go-to resource for home renovation projects; selling windows, doors, kitchen and bath cabinets, hardware, decking, roofing, trim/ moulding and more. No matter the size and scope of the project — remodeling a kitchen, adding a deck, replacing windows and doors, upgrading a bathroom, refinishing a basement — they help their customers get it done. Alexander Lumber specialists provide expert advice, unmatched knowledge and creative suggestions—from the beginning to the end of the project.

Genoa Pizza in Sugar Grove — 20 years of great Italian food Genoa Pizza owner Giuseppe Pizzo was born in Detroit, Mich., and he grew up in Italy. He opened his restaurant in Sugar Grove 20 years ago, but the real history dates back to 1975, when his grandfather opened his Genoa Pizza in Genoa, Ill. “It all starts with good quality product,” Pizzo said. “We have a good, quality pizza sauce and pizza dough that was handed down from my Uncle Pete.”

In addition to the quality of the food, he credits the success of the business to “the heart and the dedication that goes into it every day.” From thin to pan to stuffed pizza crusts, Genoa Pizza also offers a wide variety of meat and fresh vegetable toppings, and a selection of specialty pizzas, including Hawaiian Pizza, Mediterranean, BLT, Healthy Choice and Taco Pizza, among others. Genoa also serves appetizers; a variety of salads, pasta and other Italian dinners, including homemade baked lasagna, chicken alfredo fettuccini and chicken and veal parmesan; sandwiches, and a number of specials, including pizza by the slice until 2 p.m. and half-price pizza on Wednesday night.

Pizzo said he started out his work life as a finishing carpenter. When he found himself in hard times, he said his brothers gave him an opportunity, and “here I am, 20 years later.” When Pizzo began the business 20 years ago, he said he had to work hard to compete with an already-existing pizza place in town. Little by little, he was able to gain customers, and to keep them coming back for more. He and his employees

KATHY BROTHERS AD HERE

We Move People Pictured is the expanded Volkswagen dealership that has moved from West Chicago to St. Charles.

T

he goal of the Fox Valley Auto Group, Fox Valley Volkswagen St. Charles, Fox Valley Volkswagen Schaumburg and Fox Valley Buick GMC St. Charles is to sell and service new Volkswagen, Buick and GMC vehicles and all makes and models of pre-driven vehicles.

Abinion began selling vehicles to help pay for college and fell in love with the business. His first dealership was Landmark Ford in Niles, IL for 16 years. Vice President, Pre-driven Vehicle

Abinion added a new Volkswagen dealership in West Chicago in 2006, which in 2016 moved and expanded to a 40,000 square-foot facility in St. Charles. Fox Valley Volkswagen Schaumburg opened in 2008 and Fox Valley Buick GMC of St. Charles in 2011.

Their mission is to move people. But this is not about selling their customers a vehicle and repairing the ones they already have. It is about much more than that and it is certainly much more than two simple words. They want everyone who is in contact with their team members every day to be MOVED. Moved in many ways, but always for the better — better than before their engagement with them — whether it is financially, spiritually, emotionally as well as professionally. “We want to move people to a better place in their lives just by dealing and working with us,” said founder, President and CEO Emir Abinion. “Imagine the impact we can have on people’s lives with this as our focus. This is what it truly means to be of service.”

Their focus toward providing superior customer service and excellent ownership experience has allowed Fox Valley Auto Group to expand over the years.

Director and Partner Shakeel Omar, operated a successful pre-driven automotive retail store in Chicago, IL for over 16 years. Long-time friends, Abinion and Omar met when they were selling cars together at Golf Mill Ford in the mid-1980s.

In 2016, Frank Butnaru, who worked for Abinion in sales at Landmark Ford, was named as a second partner and is the General Manager of the Volkswagen dealership in Schaumburg. The two are long-time friends, as well. In 2012, Volkswagen awarded Abinion the Volkswagen Diamond Pin Award, a

recognition bestowed on only four dealers in North America and 70 Volkswagen dealers world-wide, for their overall commitment to the brand and its customers. They were again recognized in 2015 with membership in Volkswagen’s Customer First Club. This accolade recognizes the dealership as a top performer in customer satisfaction on a national level. The two things that drive Abinion are finding ways to make it better and more convenient for the dealerships’ customers to do business with them, and how can they serve the community better. Fox Valley Auto Group has three locations and approximately 160 employees. Together, Fox Valley Auto Group sells about 5,000 vehicles and services over 54,000 vehicles annually. Abinion said the secret to his dealerships’ success is to treat people like he would want to be treated and to be a value through service to his customers and community. “This comes first before any vehicle is sold or serviced,” he said.

Vibrant signage directs bikers to each plaza, which are also outfitted with water bottle fill stations, benches and weather-proof bike path information holders. “One of the scariest things for bikers is to be out on a trail and not have a way to take care of any mechanical emergencies,” said Laura Rudow, Superintendent of Parks and Planning. “These bike repair stations can give riders great peace of mind.” Each station come equipped with numerous commercial-grade, rubber-coated, flexible cable-tied tools, including various-sized screwdrivers and wrenches, that enable bikers to do everything from raising or lowering a seat to adjusting tire Good Samaritan alignment. Elevated Clothes Closet hanger arms allow the bike to be mounted at eye level to make repairs easier to manage and an air pump helps take care of any flat tires. “The biking community is a very active, socially connected network,” said Rudow. “Our Bike Plaza is helping make the park district even more of a destination for avid bikers as it provides respite to the distance biker.”

RIVER VIEW RESTAURANT:

O

wner Eleno Silva brought over 14 years of food industry experience to Montgomery when he opened the River View Diner in May of 2004.

After working for over a decade and a half in prestigious restaurants in downtown Chicago, like the Original Mitchell’s Restaurant, Silva worked in every position of the restaurant business, starting off as a dishwasher and learning how to cook in his free time. For a period of time, he was a waiter near O’Hare Airport, where he would learn the importance of quality service and hospitality. In the end, he discovered his passion for the kitchen and decided to follow his career path around it.

13 years of successful ingredients

He would then be a cook at Mitchell’s for 14 years, until he one day discovered an opportunity to open a new restaurant near the Fox River. Although he had lived in Chicago for the prior 20 years, he decided to approach the new challenge with open arms in order to pursue his dreams. Due to its beautiful setting, Silva named it “The River View Diner.” Over the years, the successful restaurant has won various awards: Best American Cuisine from the Chicago Sun-Times in 2010, the Montgomery Patch Readers’ Choice Award for Best Breakfast Spot in 2012, Best of the Best Award by Limelight Media in 2009, and an article of recognition from the restaurant magazine, DiningGuide. Silva has obtained various forms of recognition for helping the community as well. He says that it is important to “give to those who are less fortunate,” and to be a “helping hand to the community whenever possible.” River View celebrated its 13th anniversary in 2016. Now, after many years of hard work and giving back, Silva has transformed the restaurant. August of 2015 he unveiled a new building that’s a real showplace—twice the size of the original. It offers handicap accessibility, a party room that seats 100 and a patio for outside dining. The River View Diner continues to serve breakfast, lunch and dinner every day of

onfident Aire, Inc. was founded in 1992 by Tom Wangler, Jr., a secondgeneration heating and cooling specialist who started with his father at age 13.

They calculate the actual load requirements on the furnace by measuring the home’s square footage, as well as taking into account other critical factors, including the number and size of windows, direction of the sun, thickness of walls, room measurements and whether a garage, basement or crawlspace lies below the rooms. They also inspect air returns and heating vents to check for proper heat distribution and look for drafty areas where heat loss may occur.

Wangler became an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts of America as a young teenager and applies the core values of trustworthiness, loyalty and courtesy in his dealings with customers. Tom hires employees based on these same core values and demands excellence from his entire team, striving always to provide the very best heating, cooling and plumbing techniques in the industry.

According to Confident Aire, Inc., buying a new furnace is a lot like buying a car. Just like you may not want a big car that sucks up a lot of gas, you don’t want an oversized furnace, because it can drive up your energy bill. Instead, you’re better off with a reliable furnace just large enough to efficiently heat your home and keep up with demand on the coldest winter days.

Confident Aire, Inc. provides award-winning service. They have received several prestigious awards over the years, including: • Angie’s List Super Service Award four years in a row • Best of the Fox Award seven years in a row

In addition to heating, cooling and plumbing services, Confident Aire, Inc., also specializes in the installation of energy-saving devices and equipment in the home. These devices help to reduce energy consumption from the heating and cooling system. A full inspection of the duct work, as well as the layout and construction of the home, is always considered.

• The Trane Distinguished Dealer Award the past four years Confident Aire, Inc. is a true believer in supporting the community. They sponsor the “Ultimate Energy Transformation Award,” annually installing a high-efficiency Trane furnace, thermostat and air duct cleaning free of charge to a deserving family in the Fox Valley area. Confident Aire, Inc. offers homeowners a preventative maintenance agreement that includes three visits each year to inspect and tune up the air conditioning and heating system, as well as inspect the plumbing system in the home.

Testimonial

“I can’t say enough good things about PraxisFit and everyone who works there. I am a 35-year-old mom of two who has struggled with weight for most of my adult life. I have joined numerous gyms, tried all sorts of dieting fads, and failed more times than I wish to admit. Like many fellow yo-yoers, I would do well for the first few weeks, and when the excitement wears off, I’m back to my old habits. That cycle continued until I walked into PraxisFit on a Friday last October to thank owner Stephany Esmay for sponsoring a charity event I chair. I was not in a fitness routine at the time, and had no intentions of joining another gym. To be honest, I was discouraged with myself and my most recent struggles. I felt an instant connection with Stephany as soon as I met her. I didn’t plan on it, but I began asking her questions about the gym. She gave me a tour of the gym, and told me about the services they offered. I was intrigued. The following Monday I took my first class at PraxisFit and I’ve been forever changed. I had no idea then that I’d be running 6+ miles on the weekend and training for a half-marathon in June. I started my journey to a healthier lifestyle 162 days ago, and while I still have a long road ahead of me, I know that I will be successful because of the support I have at Praxis. The people here take the time to get to know you, your family, your goals, your dreams, your successes, and your failures. They push you to work harder; go farther. They encourage you; believe in you. They are truly the best. Don’t take my word for it, check them out yourself. I promise, you won’t be disappointed.” Patti Reeder Sugar Grove

FAMILY-OWNED

Mattress Warehouse of DeKalb

CELEBRATES 17 YEARS

his year marks 17 years in business for the Mattress Warehouse of DeKalb, a locally owned family company. Visit this retail store in DeKalb at 1224 E. Lincoln Highway (across from the Moose Club and behind Star Worlds Arcade). The showrooms are open to the public six days a week; Monday, Wednesday, Thursday and Friday from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Saturday from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.; and Sunday from noon to 5 p.m. It is closed on Tuesdays. “In 2000, we found an old 1920s brick warehouse that was kind of off the beaten path on DeKalb’s east side,” said owner Mike Kisluk. “We had the idea of establishing a store with very low overhead so that families could afford good-quality mattresses. We started with just five mattresses in a showroom so tiny you could hardly turn around. But the support from the community was so incredible that we expanded our showrooms.” Today, the Mattress Warehouse of DeKalb sells a wide range of mattresses, including memory foam beds, futons, bunk beds, headboards, daybeds, platform beds and loft beds are also available. You can find specialty items, such as waterbed supplies and custom-sized mattresses for antique beds, campers, RVs and truck sleepers. In stock are split-queen box springs. Unusual application bed frames and hardware are kept on-hand. Recently added is a specialty line of durable mattresses for the plus-size sleeper. All mattresses are made in the USA.

Mattress Warehouse of DeKalb recognizes that 21st Century demands often place time pressures on families. So, 75 to 80 percent of the mattress line-up is in-stock, ready to be loaded into a customer’s van or truck. Same day delivery is available on most merchandise. All the products are new and backed by a manufacturer’s warranty. Providing family-budget pricing means Mattress Warehouse is often the destination of choice for “big girl” and “big boy” beds. “One of the best things about working here is being around the little kids’ high energy and enthusiasm,” Kisluk said. He reassures parents that their children are always welcome. The Mattress Warehouse of DeKalb strives to offer a safe, relaxing, no-pressure atmosphere. “We aim to keep the store low-key,” he said. “We are ready to explain how the mattresses are constructed. Everyone is encouraged to lay down and try the beds. A comfort-based personal-preference approach to choosing a mattress is best.” “Our prices still surprise people,” Kisluk continued. “Our guiding principle is to find the best mattresses we can and sell them at the lowest prices possible. We are grateful to all the local people, Northern Illinois University students and shoppers from distant towns for your support these 17 years.” Mattress Warehouse of DeKalb can be reached at (815) 756-4999.

2017: Historic Year of Change for Messenger Public Library of North Aurora

I

n 2017, the Board of Trustees and patrons of the Messenger Public Library of North Aurora Illinois (113 Oak Street) have two reasons to celebrate. First and most importantly, the library will celebrate its 80th year of service to the residents of the Village of North Aurora. The library’s founder, Emeline Messenger, would be very proud of the library that she started in May of 1937 in the midst of the Great Depression. The library staff has been providing materials and programming to foster lifelong learning for the educational, recreational and informational needs of North Aurora residents. Since the founding of the library in a small building near the present-day Village Hall along State Street to its facility at 113 Oak St., the library has been fulfilling its mission of “informing, connecting and enriching” the community. A second reason for the library and the North Aurora community to celebrate is the completion by the Library Board and staff of a two-year renovation project of the current library facility. Over a total of $1,000,000 was spent to revitalize and update the current facility on Oak Street to keep up with the demands of current library users and their needs. The renovation project was completed in two phases. The first phase in 2015 involved the Youth and Young Adult Services sections on the east side of the building. The Messenger Legacy continued and was reflected in this project by the donation of over $100,000 from the Estate of the the late Barbara Messenger Tinker to the Library Foundation Fund. The expanded Youth Programming Room was renamed The

Barbara Messenger Tinker Youth Program Room. Phase two, due to be completed by May 1, 2017, was the most extensive project undertaken since the library reopened in 2003 on Oak Street. Phase two involves the addition of two new meeting spaces for the community, plus so much more, including two collaborative technology spaces, a Technology Access area that includes a new Business Center with copy/fax/scanning services, a coffee bar and book browsing lounge, a self-service checkout counter and a combined public service area. Best of all, the entire project was financed through conservative fiscal planning through funds placed in the Capital Reserve Improvement Fund for the library. No new tax money was used to pay for the project. In 2017 a year long series of displays, programs and events is being planned by the library staff and board. A big event is now in the planning stages this winter and spring that will take place during the Annual Village of North Aurora Days Annual Celebration on Sunday Aug. 6, at the library. The event will include a book sale, music, food and a birthday cake. For further information on the library’s programs, materials and service, visit the website at messengerpl.org or call the library at (630) 896-0240.

a week (Monday through Friday, noon to 6 p.m.; and weekends from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.). Anderson’s main shelter, located at 1000 South LaFox St. in South Elgin, will continue all its regular adoption hours, services, onsite veterinary clinic and humane education programs.

Pet Supplies Plus of Chicagoland also believes in adopting and supporting local animal shelters. That’s why they are very pleased to partner with Anderson Animal Shelter to help open the shelter’s new satellite adoption center next to the North Aurora Pet Supplies Plus store at 180 N. Randall Rd.

The 1,500 sq. ft. adoption center in North Aurora shares a wall with Pet Supplies Plus so adopters can literally walk next door to purchase any supplies they may need to care for their newly adopted family member.

Approximately 15 dogs and puppies and 25 cats and kittens are now available for adoption at Anderson’s first-ever satellite adoption center. It will be open seven days

“We’re excited to partner with such a reputable, no-kill shelter like Anderson. We share the mutual goal of helping pets find loving homes to live long, happy and healthy lives,” said George Lennon, franchise owner of the North Aurora Pet Supplies Plus store, along with 10 other stores throughout the Chicago suburbs. “With Anderson’s exceptional pet care, you know you will be adopting a well-cared-for pet. We also want pet parents to know we’re here for them at every stage of their pet’s life. Our program for new pet parents provides unbiased guidance in nutrition, grooming and pet care. We allow pet parents to choose the brands they want while still saving them hundreds of dollars,” continued Lennon. Anderson’s goal is for 1,500 pets to be adopted through the North Aurora center in 2017. Last year, at its main shelter, Anderson achieved a record 3,008 adoptions — nearly three times as many as 2014 and the most in any year in the organization’s history. Anderson has been saving pets and serving the Fox Valley for the past 50 years. About 80,000 animals have been adopted from Anderson since 1966.

10 YEARS AND GOING STRONG!

fter 10 years of partnership, Allen+Pepa Architects have finally “moved in” together. Maintaining separate offices in Elgin and Aurora for many years, Lane Allen, Eric Pepa and staff moved this past August into a unique new space in the heart of Geneva’s historic retail district. The move allows for increased collaboration and synergy among partners and staff as well as better use of resources. In 2007, Allen+Pepa Architects was formed as a fusion of Lane Allen Architects of Batavia and Perihelion, Ltd. of Elgin, two established firms serving Kane County and the Fox

River Valley region. After collaborating on several projects, principals Lane Allen, AIA, LEED-AP BC+D and Eric Pepa, AIA realized that their shared philosophies, complementary abilities and strong interest in the revitalization of traditional historic downtowns could lead to a successful partnership that would serve the entire region. Partner Lane Allen’s heart and passion is still in Aurora and he intends to keep a strong presence there. “Aurora has great bones” Allen says. “It has a great stock of historic buildings and a great sense of place. The downtown has a thriving arts community, cultural diversity and is a very walkable city.

As architects, we are not just about designing buildings; we are about designing places people love.” Although A+P Architects has become well known regionally for their historic and adaptive reuse projects, their practice is much broader than that. They are also known for medical/ dental offices, multi-family, residential and industrial/automotive design. Some recently completed projects include Water’s Edge, a new 50-unit apartment building in South Elgin, Fields Infiniti in Glencoe, and Hi-line Dental on Route 59 in Aurora. Pepa says “we love solving design problems and we love challenges. That is what keeps our practice fresh.”

Do You HATE Going To The Dentist? Are you embarrassed to smile? Is it time to schedule an appointment?

www.SedationDentistry.info According to Dr. Kim, “Excellent and complex dental care requires a significant investment of time. Patients who are sedated are not aware of how long they have been in the chair during an appointment, which enables them to remain relaxed and comfortable throughout longer procedures.”

There are countless reasons why people choose not to visit their dentist as often as they should, but the vast majority of them fall under a single category: fear.

Not only can patients benefit from sedation dentistry during an individual dental appointment, but it can also lead to a reduction in fear of the dentist.

To help people overcome their fear of the dentist, the team at Modern Dentistry in Sugar Grove are proponents of “sedation dentistry.”

“Positive dental experiences help to build a trusting relationship between an anxious patient and the entire dental team,” Kim explained. “It is not uncommon for anxious patients to require less expensive sedation or anxiety reducing procedures in the future, as they have gained confidence that dental therapy is not something that needs to be dreaded.”

Dr. Joseph Kim has performed thousands of sedation procedures. Most patients come to him by word of mouth. “We have many patients come from out of state for sedation and extensive dental treatment,” said Patient Care Coordinator Michelle Schultz.

He said that many patients find themselves finally able to return for their every-six-month exam and cleaning and are able to do so without the same level of fear and anxiety they originally had.

Dr. Kim said that the fear of dentists can sometimes cause anxiety so great that they lead to physical symptoms: panic attacks, sweating, nervousness, nausea. “Patients this fearful have a hard time even speaking on the phone with us to make an appointment,” Kim said.

“This promotes not only a healthy mouth, but also boosts the patient’s self-esteem and confidence,” Kim said. “It’s always amazing to see the transformation of patients who were embarrassed of their teeth. The emotional and financial investment that anxious patients make in their oral health is rewarded with a positive self-image in their healthy, new smile.”

This fear is often caused by either general phobia of the dentist, or it can be caused by a traumatic past experience or dental condition causing embarrassment or humiliation. Sadly, avoiding preventive and early treatment often turns smaller problems into serious diseases such as gum disease, painful and infected teeth, and further deterioration of their smiles.

For patients with great anxiety, Dr. Kim’s team often suggests IV sedation. For those who have a general fear of the dentist or just want to have a lot of treatment done at once, oral sedation is also available. Both have an amnesia component to them, so they have very little to no memory of the dental visit.

Sedation dentistry is ideal for patients facing this level of fear of dentists. However, there are things other people face that also can benefit from sedation dentistry. For some, their gag reflex is so severe that a patient requires sedation in order to have a treatment done. Other general reasons for sedation dentistry include people who need a lot of treatment to be done but do not want to return for multiple visits, and people who travel for work or cannot miss a lot of work due to dental treatments. In those cases, aided by sedation dentistry, more treatments could be done in fewer appointments.

“Sedation dentistry has helped many patients overcome their fears and allowed them to have the treatment they need,” Dr. Kim said.

He encourages fearful patients to take advantage of a no-obligation, free sedation consultation. “With our free sedation consultations, fearful patients have one less reason to put off their dental health for another day.”
