THE DAYS ARE GETTING LONGER AND THE TEMPERATURES ARE RISING which means spring and summer in Sharon is on the way! This year we hope to offer a bit of something for everyone, with programs and activities for all ages. Our youngest participants can join Coach Kerry for Pre-K sports and arts and crafts, while our adult residents can enjoy a refreshing session of Yoga Flow on the front lawn of the Sharon Community Center. Massapoag Sports Program and Sailing on Lake Massapoag will be full swing as a yearly staple of our summer months in Sharon. Between these programs and many more listed in this guide, we are hopeful you and your family will find a great way to spend your free time this summer. Thank you and happy summer!

Children’s Conversation Skills Workshop

For many children it is easy to strike up a conversation or join one already in progress but for others engaging in small talk or starting a conversation can be challenging. Developing a child’s conversational skills and etiquette is important as it helps them build confidence, cultivate friendships, and understand social expectations. A child who is good at communicating verbally will often produce better written communication and interpret what they read more accurately, helping them in all areas of academics. Our 60-minute conversation skills workshop will cover some of the following topics:

Topics Include: How to start a conversation, icebreakers to start a conversation, how to keep a conversation going, how to end a conversation, topics to avoid, active listening and not interrupting, being respectful and non-judgmental, rude and disrespectful body language and behavior, giving and receiving compliments

Children’s Dining Etiquette Workshop

Take to take your school-aged children out to eat with you at a fine dining or large social event, but you're a little afraid how they might behave?

Present your child with the opportunity to feel self-reliant and confident in any social or dining situation by taking interactive lessons taught by a certified etiquette consultant. Our workshop is designed to teach them how to conduct themselves on the dining table at home, in a restaurant or when meeting new people. Teaching children proper dining skills and table manner helps them to succeed at school, socially, and later, professionally. So, introduce your child to proper table manners and dining etiquette today and help build their confidence for any social situation tomorrow!

Topics Include: Approaching and seating at the table, the napkin and its uses, understanding place setting, How to correctly hold silverware, the bread & butter plate, the soup course, proper use of silverware American and Continental styles of dining, passing food at the table, what to do with unwanted food, appropriate table conversation, excusing yourself from the table, and other table manners.

Teen Netiquette Workshop

Is technology making your child rude?

Social media platforms are great places to communicate and learn. However, there is a lack of etiquette on social media because etiquette rules haven't been laid out for users. If you do not use technology responsibly, it can negatively affect your reputation and your relationships, both personally and professionally. Children need to keep in mind that colleges and employers are seeking people with not just good technical and academic skills, but also with social graces, self- awareness, and a positive presence on the internet. In this workshop your child will learn how to be more aware and digitally responsible on the internet in order to ensure that their image is well-reflected.

Topics Include: Texting protocol, email etiquette and social media etiquette

Children’s Social Skills Workshop

In today’s fast-paced, high tech society, teaching children manners is more crucial than ever. One of the most important jobs we have as parents and teachers is to help children develop social skills, show them how to interact with others in a polite manner, and teach them to treat everyone with respect. Whether the occasion is a family gathering, a meal at a restaurant, or a quick trip to the grocery store, children can apply our lessons in any social situations and practice good manners so that they become a habitual part of their lives and set them apart.

Topics Include: The importance of greeting others, rules of introduction, the handshake, eye contact, and the power of a smile, self-respect and respect for others, proper telephone etiquette, writing thank you, and other modern manners.

Teen Interview Prep Workshop

Do you have a high school student getting ready to interview for a job?

Are you a teen looking for a summer internship? Interviewing can be challenging for students especially when they haven’t interviewed before. However, putting one’s best foot forward during an interview is a critical step towards landing a great job during high school, and a valuable skill to develop for the future. Parents, think back to your first job interview. Did you know what to expect or say? Interviewing can be a stressful experience for teens whether they are looking for their first job or going to their first college interview. Learn self-presentation skills and important talking points to help succeed at an interview.

Topics Include: What to do before the interview, know your resume, your elevator pitch, dressing for success, how to make a good first impression, common interview questions, questions you can ask, what to do after the interview, and more.

Sailing Scholarship Opportunity!

Sailing

KAFKA LEARN TO SAIL SCHOLARSHIP Bernard (“Bernie”) Kafka, and Susan (“Sue”) Kafka, each passed away unexpectedly. This scholarship is named in their honor. They were both committed to their communities, the people they worked with and served, and most importantly their families. Bernie was a Rotarian and exemplified the Rotary Motto, Service Above Self. Sue followed in her father’s footsteps and worked tirelessly to help others to make the world a better place. They would make friends, often lifelong friends, wherever their travels took them. They encouraged, provided guidance, and exemplified the golden rule to “treat others as you would like to be treated”. They had a unique way to make the everyone they met feel special and important. Bernie and Sue also loved to spend time outdoors and appreciated the beauty of nature. Sue was an athlete and enjoyed biking, running and swimming. She raised money, often without recognition, for many charities such as the Pan Mass Challenge, cancer research, and much more. They were both avid sailors and would happily spend hours sailing and exploring Lake Massapoag. Pursuing dreams, knowledge, and friendships were important to Bernie and Sue, as was encouraging and supporting others to try new experiences. The Kafka Learn to Sail Scholarships at Lake Massapoag will be awarded to individuals who would like to learn to sail and may not be able to do so without encouragement and support.

To apply: Please visit the Sharon Recreation Department and download an application. The application has directions on how to make a donation to the Kafka Learn to Sail Scholarship, please do the following:

1. Write “Kafka Learn to Sail Scholarship” in the memo line of the check

2. The Sharon Tax ID is 046-001-295

3. The town of Sharon is a municipal, non-profit and donations will be accepted by the Town of Sharon. Donations are deducible to the extent the law provides

4. Mail the check to: Town of Sharon Town Treasurer, 90 South Main Street Sharon, MA 02067
