The Journey from Spiritual Pregnancy to Renewal
Rabbi Alan W. Bright
Immediately after the sounding of the shofar on Rosh Hashanah, we recite a short prayer which begins “Hayom Harat Olam”, traditionally translated in our machzors as “Today is the birthday of the world.” However, this phrase holds a more nuanced interpretation. While Rosh Hashanah marks the advent of humanity rather than the world’s creation, the phrase “Hayom Harat Olam” more accurately translates to “Today, the world is pregnant,” with “harat” signifying pregnancy, not birth. This leads to an intriguing question: what does it imply to state that the world is “pregnant” on this day?
As we usher in the new year, we can view it as a period of collective expectancy, akin to being pregnant. Yet, as enriching as this phase is, it’s understood that remaining pregnant indefinitely is not desirable. Therefore, Rosh Hashanah presents us with a decision point: do we continue living in this metaphorical state of pregnancy, or do we take a leap and give birth? Do we maintain our current selfhood from the preceding year, or do we endeavour to evolve, bringing forth an improved version of ourselves? This potent prayer nudges us to contemplate these crucial questions, urging us to find our answers.
Within each individual resides an untapped life teeming with ideas, dreams, aspirations, and ambitions. Some of these visions have perhaps been gestating for years yet remain unfulfilled. The reasons behind our reticence to ‘give birth’ to these dreams are diverse. It could be a lack of self-belief, the influence of naysayers, previous failures, an unwillingness to disrupt the status quo, or simply a fear of change. However, during Rosh Hashanah, we’re confronted with the understanding that remaining perpetually ‘pregnant’
isn’t sustainable. We cannot remain the same indefinitely; it is imperative to manifest our potential, embrace change, and step into the world as a renewed version of ourselves.
Rosh Hashanah extends this call for renewal and introspection, be it our community, our shul, our religious practices, collective programming, and community spaces as well. This sacred time prompts us to reflect on our achievements of the past years, for example, our highly successful joint weekday services, joint Sukkot and Passover celebrations, and collaborative programs with Shaare Zion Beth-El. Furthermore, it encourages us to ponder ways to improve further and enact the necessary changes to invigorate our synagogue and faith.
The placement of this prayer just after the resonating shrill of the shofar is no coincidence. The shofar’s reverberating cry serves to rouse us, to command our undivided attention, urging us to contemplate life-altering shifts. Consequently, we stand on the precipice of transformation, poised and ready for change. Much like a newborn embracing the world, Rosh Hashanah symbolizes a dawn of fresh beginnings, the culmination of our spiritual gestation. Past failures or hesitations lose their weight. Hayom - Today heralds a fresh day, a promising year, and a renewed world. Hayom - Today, we are primed to manifest our concealed and dormant potential. Therefore, let the sound of the shofar inspire us. Let’s commit to embracing necessary life changes, ideally steering us towards improvement and betterment.
Elizabeth and our children join me in wishing you all a Shana Tova Umevurechet – A happy, healthy, and blessed New Year.

Shalom! I would like to share with you the two trips that changed my life. Both trips were at the same place with the same concept.
Thirteen years ago, I went on a trip called March of the Living (MOL.) My life changed forever, after that trip – and, after six years of living in Montreal, it was then that we decided to move back home to Israel.
The second trip happened a few months ago and it’s called JOH (Journey of Hope). After this trip I understood clearly how lucky we are to have a safe home - Israel, and how every human being, including (and especially) Jewish people, must go and experience this incredible journey.
It began a few months ago, when I was asked to join this JOH trip as a “Ruah” (spiritual singer/leader.) Our wonderful Rabbi Bright and president Mark Merson, who understand the importance of such a trip, supported me and encouraged me to go.
120 eager 18-20 year old “flowers”, our best youth, salt of the earth, who wanted, but could not join the MOL for the past two years, due to Covid 19, went on this trip. There were three buses full of young energy and thirst to learn about dark pasts and hopes for the future in Holocaust dark Poland and Redemption flourishing Israel. Four survivors joined the new generation and shared their mesmerizing stories. The kids were astonished and emotional to be with the survivors. No words can describe the relationships between the young and old generations on this trip.
To see the new generation dancing and holding hands with the survivors as they sang “Am Yisrael Chai” in a deserted
Davidoff
(now a museum) synagogue in Poland, and then becoming so subdued and full of despair as they stood at the site of the Jewish children’s communal grave - that is something that cannot be replaced by anything else in the world. It is a “Tilt”, a life changing experience. A person coming out from such a trip will never be the same again.
So many stories, so many tears – of sadness, of joy, of excitement, of love, of connection between Jewish souls –it’s a once in a lifetime journey.
From the many exciting stories from this trip, I would like to share one: the story of Angela. Angela is a miracle walking amongst us! She is the only person in the world who was BORN IN AUSCHWITZ! Yes, she was! To hear her tell her story and the story of her mother, who didn’t want to have an abortion (G-d forbid), and to bring a 1 kilogram baby to this “hell” place, Auschwitz, and two hours after labor - to stand in the snow for hours, praying that the rats won’t hear her baby, Angela… “Mommy, how did you have the power to survive this?” Angela asked her mom many years later. The answer of the brave mom gave me a boost of life like I never had before. The answer was: “After MY mom visited me that night in my dream and told me: “bring the baby to the world”! and after you are born like a miracle wick of light, I was standing there like a volcano full of fire and energy! I had a purpose! I had life!
To hear such a story (from Angela’s mouth!) – gave me a boost of energy to wake up every day full of light and life. Therefore, I invite each one of you – any age, any stage, anywhere to experience this trip of a lifetime, of hope, the trip of the everlasting people of eternity, the people of Israel.
Shana Tovah
JOH Everyone should go! (even Jews)

Cantor Boaz
Shana Tovah!
Mark Merson, President
I have completed my first year as president of Shaare Zedek. What an incredible twelve months it has been. I have made many new friends and have enjoyed connecting with hundreds of congregants in person or by phone.
Rabbi Bright and Cantor Boaz make services and life at Shaare Zedek both rewarding and inspirational, and for this I thank them. I also appreciate the effort that Elizabeth makes to include everyone at Shaare Zedek as part of her family.
We have a wonderful staff, great volunteers and a board of directors that work tirelessly to make Shaare Zedek better and more welcoming.
This has been a year of change. Women now participate in all aspects of religious services: they form part of the minyan, they have aliyot, they chant Haftorah and they read Torah. Since December we have been holding joint minyanim with Shaare Zion Beth-El and have increased the number of events that the two congregations do together.
I hope that 5784 and the subsequent years will bring more changes as we seek to make the younger generation a more important part of the Jewish community and our congregation.
Bonnie and I wish you a sweet, healthy and happy New Year. Shana Tovah.

Message from our Executive Director
Billy Booth, Executive Director
So far, 2023 is already dramatically different from the past few years. Most people are able to put the hardships of the pandemic behind them and events are now taking place on a regular basis. These include small gatherings for baby namings and brises, breakfasts to honour a yahrzeit for a loved one, large scale weddings, and Bar and Bat Mitzvahs. Recently, we had three significant events on the same morning which required some juggling. Our staff pulled together to make things run smoothly for each gathering. Kudos to Roberto Ortiz for keeping his cool throughout. More people are booking events in the coming year which is exciting. Some of these gatherings require augmenting our kitchen and serving equipment which is already underway. The kitchens are being equipped with decorative serving pieces to avoid costly rentals for our families over time. At the time of this writing, Sara Watson, our bookkeeper, is off work due to illness. We wish her a speedy recovery and look forward to her return. Wendy Tessler has taken on some of Sara’s responsibilities and added to her own busy schedule. Wendy does this with her winning smile and can-do attitude which is greatly appreciated. We are entering the summer period and before we know it the High Holy Days will be upon us. Lots of plans are underway to make 5784 a great experience for all.
Religious Services Committee
Dr. Michael Wasser
Dear fellow congregants,
Since I wrote to you in the Passover Koleinu, there have been a few developments. We parted ways with our Hazzan Sheini, Ariel Krispine. I want to thank him for his services and wish him well in the future. Our former Hazzan Sheini, Gershon Katz, has returned to read the Torah on Shabbat and the holidays and to help out with other things as needed. Sharing minyans with Shaare Zion-Beth El has continued and has included Kabbalat Shabbat on special occasions. We also shared services on the second and seventh days of Passover. Our joint minyans have been healthy and the congregants who attend have gotten to know one another. Anyone who has a Yahrzeit or wants to join us will be assured of a friendly welcome. Cantor Boaz continues to travel between his Shaare Zedek family and his family in Israel. He represented Shaare Zedek on the Journey of Hope in June. He returned to Shaare Zedek for the month of July and is back from Rosh Hashanah until after Simchat Torah. We are enthusiastically looking forward to the High Holy Days. We will have the wonderful combination of Rabbi Bright and Cantor Boaz, the choir under the direction of Dr. Earl Karanofsky, and Gershon Katz reading the Torah. With Covid restrictions over, we are planning larger and more varied services, including more family friendly affairs. I look forward to seeing you then, or earlier.

Torah Class
Rebbetzin Elizabeth Bright
3,761 years ago, we stood as a people and accepted the Torah as our guide and promised as a people to show the world that we could develop a world guided by integrity, morality, love and kindness. Each of us is incumbent of that promise, either by birth or by choice; we are the representatives of our forefathers and mothers, continuing the heritage of our people. As the Shaare Zedek Torah teacher for the last 22 years, I want to wish everyone a meaningful High Holy Day season, filled with the desire to continue moving forward in learning and representing the Jewish credo, which is love your neighbor as yourself, because G-d is Holy therefore you are Holy. Can you imagine if we actually lived by those words? No one would honk, as everyone would give each other the right of way in a polite gesture. People would be patient with each other, because being in the presence of a holy being, who would be wanting to leave that moment?
The Torah is our guide of positive messages embedded in the commandments. If you do not understand the message, and it seems awkward or unsettling, ask, because you have a great team of experts at Shaare Zedek; The Rabbi, Cantor Boaz, our Chazan Sheini Gershon and me. Things you read might not seem correct, but we always need to be reminded that we are living in 2023 and not wandering the desert. Yet, the Torah and its laws are timeless, and the challenge is finding an acceptable solution for someone who is perplexed by a Torah concept. In the words of the late Chief Rabbi, Jonathan Sacks z’l. “Clear rules and proper study and discipline help to establish, maintain and expand one’s mind and give order for a
more fulfilled family and society. Love is not enough, relationships need rules.”
Our [Jewish] bond is with our Torah. Torah study is the first step in understanding yourself in relationship to family, community, and the other groups around us. Torah study allows us to take all that life dishes out and place it, so there is less confusion and fear. Shaare Zedek can be the first step in your Jewish education. Listening to the Rabbi’s sermons, Cantor Boaz’s davening and Gershon’s reading of the Torah is totally a spiritually uplifting experience. I encourage you to come and see for yourself. Even if you do not know or do not remember anything of the Shabbat service, I can almost guarantee that you will come away feeling just a bit better than you did before you came through the doors. Ask yourself, since your Bar or Bat Mitzvah, how educated have you become? Are you still thinking about the concepts you learned when you were forced at 12 or 13? What about your own personal life experiences, has your thought process on Judaism matured since then? What about seeing our beautiful heritage and culture through your eyes today?
Never walk away from learning another side or another explanation to the one that fills your head, or one that disputes your family custom: ask. In addition, we have wonderful classes at this synagogue and programs to enrich your mind and possibly give you another perspective. Make 5784 the year for your Jewish education and your spiritual connection. I look forward to hearing from each of you on your progress.

SZ Sisterhood
Carole Burke, Sisterhood Representative to the Board
On May 13th we celebrated Sisterhood Shabbat. For the first time, women of all ages ran and took part in the entire service except for the majority of the Torah reading. It was a proud and emotional moment. Many thanks go to the planning committee and Rabbi Bright for his kind help with all of our questions. Sisterhood sponsored the kiddush afterwards. We were joined by Marilyn Cohen, the President of our region of Women’s League for Conservative Judaism. We had an engaging, wonderfully attended event on June 21, “A Day at the Radio Station”, with guest speakers; Sarah Deshaies and Trudi Mason from CJAD. Later in the year, we expect that Monique Polak will be our speaker. Please note that our programs are open to all.
This year your subscriptions and kind donations have helped to pay for part of the Shacharit breakfasts, all the plants for Shavuot and for a contribution towards Family Shabbat. A contribution will also be made to the Women’s League Convention project, the Shifra and Puah maternity centre in Uganda. Founded by an Israeli nurse, its staff and clientele are multi-denominational and seek to improve maternity care and combat infant mortality. As usual, we will support the day-long Toy Tea, where we take toys to be distributed to mothers in shelters. They wrap the toys to give to their children during the holiday seasons in December. We also purchase Bar and Bat mitzvah gifts and mezuzot as they are needed. At the Sisterhood Shabbat Kiddush, we presented a new Challah cover to the Congregation. We also sent a card wishing King Charles III Mazel Tov on his Coronation.
We thank Rabbi Bright, Billy, Wendy, Sara, Roberto and Munirah for their help and kindness. We could not run this organization without them.
Shaare Zedek Sisterhood wishes everyone a healthy and peaceful New Year! Shana Tovah!
Sisterhood Book Club
The past season saw the return to meeting in-person in our library to enjoy a cup of tea or coffee and enjoy the company of others.
The selected books covered a wide range of topics, from Russian espionage to the Spanish inquisition and current social injustice. The last meeting before summer break was a huge success, with an attendance of over 40 people to celebrate the novel, Shul for Scandal, by our very own Norm Spatz, who was present to read from his book and warmly engage in a Q & A with the audience.
The new season promises more great reads presently in the process of selection. Everyone is welcome to join in, whether a shul member or not. We meet every six weeks on Monday afternoons in an informal and friendly circle to enjoy the pleasure of literature and each other.

Lorna Gerson-Goldig and Dorothy Tonchin, Torah Fund Co-Chairs
This year’s Torah Fund event on May 23, held via zoom, was well attended and successful. Our guest, Rabbi Ayelet Cohen, Dean of the Rabbinical School and Religious Leadership at JTS (Jewish Theological Seminary) together with Moderator, Linda Shohet, engaged in a thoughtful and informative discussion on the topic, “The Future of Conservative Rabbis: Respecting Tradition, Shepherding Change”.
To all who registered, donated, and participated in this most interesting evening, thank you for your kind and generous support. We look forward to meeting and greeting you, hopefully, in person, at our next Torah Fund event in 2024.
Our sincere thanks and appreciation to Linda Shohet and Eleanor Diamond, Torah Fund Co-chairs from Shaare Zion Beth-El Sisterhood. We hope to continue working with them again on future Torah Fund programs.
To our very own Wendy Tessler and Billy Booth, thank you for all your help and support which contributed to making this event the success that it was.
Wishing you and your families good health and happiness in 5784. Shana Tova!

Dear Congregants,
Life & Legacy
Shawn Martel, Chair - Life & Legacy Committee
We are well into Year 3 of our initiative to cultivate legacy gifts for our synagogue. Over the last two and a half years, we have had 45 letters of intent signed by individuals wanting to secure the future of Shaare Zedek. This has also resulted in $17,000 in grants to assist us with current projects. We are nowhere close to being done though! This initiative is ongoing and we are looking to speak with our members today about the impact they can have on Shaare Zedek for years to come. This can be done on an individual level, or even through an existing relationship that you may have with the Jewish Community Foundation. Over the coming months, we will be reaching out to our congregants to discuss the ways they can make a difference. In most cases, the result today is nothing out of your pocket, but knowing that you have committed to Shaare Zedek down the line. Want to learn more? Please contact myself, Billy or Lizzie Cody at the JCF for more details.
I’d also like to take the opportunity to thank the following donors who have signed letters of intent thus far. Thank you so much for making these generous Legacy gifts towards Shaare Zedek’s future!

Message from our Choir Director
Dr. Earl Karanofsky
The Shaare Zedek Congregation choir has been part of religious services at Shaare Zedek for decades. A few of us have been associated with this choir since its inception more than fifty years ago. Our choir is composed of a dedicated group of volunteers whose love of music and singing and our personal attachment to Shaare Zedek has enabled us to support the clergy and embellish the High Holy Day experience. We prepare for months in advance to provide the congregation with a wide range of classical and contemporary liturgical music during the High Holy Day season.
Many thanks to Cantor Boaz Davidoff for his collaboration and expertise in making our musical interaction such a rewarding one. I would like to express my sincere gratitude to Paula Sacks, Maxine Ratner, Janet Garmaise, Tanya Shahnovich, Ed Katz, Michael Deitcher, Elyse Wolman, Shirley Schnurbach, Enid Shatner, Alan Kenley, Lenny Miller and Alasdair Campbell for their constant support and devotion.
On behalf of the Shaare Zedek Choir, I would like to wish the entire Shaare Zedek family a happy, healthy and melodious New Year.

Paula Sacks
My association with Shaare Zedek Congregation began when I was saying Kaddish for my father in 1994. I hadn’t attended synagogue for a long time and Shaare Zedek was really close to where I lived. I remember with fondness the warm welcome I received and quickly became part of the daily Minyan. Around the same time, I lost my job and offered to help in the office. The Executive Director liked the way I worked and I was given part time work which I gladly accepted. This eventually turned into full time and I stayed at Shaare Zedek for almost 25 years until my retirement in 2019.
After I retired, I made the decision to join the shul. It’s very different for me now. It’s family and it feels like home. I attend the daily services and Shabbat Services whenever I am able to and am pleased to be counted as part of the Minyan. Last year Billy Booth graciously taught me how to read the trope for the Haftarah and I have chanted a few over the year. I have been singing in the Shaare Zedek choir since 1995 and this continues to be a joy and a pleasure. I am on the Board of the Shaare Zedek Sisterhood and really enjoy working with this lovely group of women.
I am humbled to have been chosen to be Kallat Bereshit this year and am grateful to Shaare Zedek for this beautiful honour.

My name is Carlos Diaz Lopez, my wife Denise Flores my daughters Camila and Kayla are blessed to be part of the Shul. I remember the day I met for the first time Rabbi Alan, since that moment I felt I was home, we converted and the Board members embraced us with love and I was invited to be the treasurer. Today I like to share some words with you:
One for each other, A Jewish life is so meaningful because we received a promise from G-D of a future perfected world, we can hold to it even during the most difficult times.
Each of us is a gem with uniqueness beauty that must shine in the world. We do not have to wait for the world to be better, we can make it better by attending to services, fulfilling a daily Mitzvah, giving tzedakah to the needy, or simply to be kind to each other.
Each small act of love and justice we pose to our neighbour brings comfort and blessings to the world.
I hope each of us is blessed with love.

A Thought on Antisemitism Related to Israel on Canadian Campuses
Yael Goutard
Today’s reality regarding antisemitism in Canada is concerning. A deluge of misconceptions, inaccurate reporting and conspiracy theories are growing in trend in both mainstream and social media as well as academic places. Universities have always been a great place to build on ideas and help support causes and movements. In concept, this is a great thing, but the antisemitic incidents on campuses are largely caused by a mixture of new ideologies (support for BDS, anticolonialism, merging belief of apartheid in Israel, and the list goes on), rooted beliefs, and new applications of those ‘understandings’ all of which pose challenges to Jewish students and their support and associations to Israel.
Antisemitic incidents on campuses have been the subject of a variety of investigations and research over the last decade. Additional available data from B’nai Brith’s annual reports are of great value. They highlight various problems and denounce them, and some are quite worrying.
● In 2019 the Graduate Student Union (GSU) of the University of Toronto voted to refuse the distribution of kosher food on campus because kosher food distribution is synonymous with support to Israel, in their understanding;
● The same year, at Queen University, antisemitic graffiti displaying the words “The Goyim Know” was found.
● In 2020, another example of disturbing graffiti was tagged at Concordia University stating “Hitler was right, Jews are virus to humanity.”
● In 2021, the Scarborough campus of the University of Toronto voted for the removal of serving kosher food that originates from Israel. Thus, these few examples are only the tip of the iceberg of antisemitism on Canadian campuses. It is concerning to see the little actions that are being taken by such important and valuable institutions. The University of Toronto, as a response to antisemitic incidents, decided to hold onto the GSU funds that had helped them promote BDS activities on campuses, but how is that decision or ‘action’ helpful to the community?; how is this helping combat antisemitism on campuses? The University of Toronto’s Vice-president and provost announced that the funds withheld only represented 0.86%, or $10,918, of the GSU’s total available fees, which would have been allocated to the BDS caucus. As we know, one of the most used arguments to ‘promote’ one’s belief or ideology is the right to freedom of speech. However, in the cases mentioned above, that so-called “freedom of speech” turns
into hate speech. Though, if we dare mention Zionism or Israel on campuses, negative consequences might occur.
In an experience of my own, during the winter semester of 2023, I asked the chair of the department to forward an email about a diplomatic seminar taught by Paul Hirschson, Israel’s Consul in Montreal, to which I had been invited. However, the request was refused. The situation in Israel between Netanyahu and Israel’s democracy, and the faith of non-Jews in Israel was the reason he did not see himself promoting an event given by the Israeli Consul. As we discussed Israel, we both agreed that Israel has the right to exist, and we should defend it. I know and understand that decisions in an academic context are more complex, and consequences may result, which is why I explained that my goal in promoting this event is not in any way to cause trouble to the department. Yet, my argument remained the same: the Israeli consul had nothing to do with what was happening in Israel, and neither was the event, which focused on diplomacy and diplomatic relationships. Even if I am part of the Religions and Cultures department whose teachings about Judaism and Jewish history are outstanding, I think it is important, even crucial, to know when to separate the politics of a country from some types of events. If we keep referring to Israel and its political tensions, we won’t be able to see beyond. When the United States is centred in national or international conflict, we do not stop institutions or businesses from collaborating with the USA. Hence, why should we stop when it comes to Israel? Because some people feel offended because of their skewed ideologies and beliefs? We are offended to have our culture, events, traditions and historical attachment discredited because some organizations have decided that anything related to Judaism and Jews is most likely synonymous with Israel. Thus, there is, without doubt, inequality and unfairness towards Jewish students but also a lack of understanding of how antisemitism manifests in various forms. One system that could be valuable to expand society and institutions’ understanding of antisemitism related to Zionism is the “3D test”.
Developed by Natan Sharansky, it is used to analyze comments that Delegitimize, Demonize, and used Double-standards towards Israel’s criticism to identify antisemitism. But for universities to apply such a test, I believe, they need to keep an open mind and accept that constructive criticism is part of growing and the learning process of any individual as well as the institution, and thus adaptation is required to enhance many Jewish students’ life experience.
It is our good fortune to be a part of SZ
Nancy and Jack Cooperberg
It is our good fortune to be a part of the Shaare Zedek Congregation. As so many of us would attest, it is the warm and welcoming membership who have created a most wonderful and caring fellowship.
We have all come together from various backgrounds, to be a part of a modern conservative congregation, where we will feel comfortable the moment we enter the synagogue. There will always be someone to take you under their wings and show you the way.
Rabbi Bright and Cantor Boaz Davidoff, along with Gershon Katz and Elyse Wolman make our spiritual services a delightful experience. Kiddush is always a great time to catch up with old friends and make new ones. There are always some very interesting discussions going on and everyone has the opportunity to express their views if they so desire and receive a kind and non-judgemental response.
So, join us, won’t you, any morning, evening, Shabbat or whenever the feeling moves you. You might enjoy our Wednesday morning Torah class with Rebbitzin Elizabeth Bright on Zoom, and/or perhaps our Lunch and Learn series on Pirkei Avot, The Ethics of our Fathers, led by Rabbi Bright, on Thursdays in person in the library. There are a few spaces still available. Please call the Office to register. You will be very glad you did.
From Generation to Generation
We are delighted to announce that our committee has successfully completed the 5784 Yizkor Book edition, which will be distributed before Yom Kippur. Once again, booklets will be mailed out to all Shaare Zedek members.
As in previous years, this Yizkor booklet holds a significant place in our Yom Kippur, Shemini Atzeret, Passover, and Shavuot services, serving as a poignant way to honour the memory of cherished family and friends who have left us but continue to live on in our hearts.
If you would like your loved ones to be remembered in the upcoming 5785 edition, please contact Len for further details at 514-705-7171.
Thank you for your continued support in preserving the memories of our loved ones.

Yahrzeits
We are reaching out to our members to remind them of their yahrzeit commemorations and the times of minyan services available to them so that they may honour the memories of their loved ones.
Daily Minyanim
Our efforts to ensure a daily Minyan in both Shaare Zedek and Shaare Zion Beth-El is working very successfully, with services alternating each week between the synagogues. Since its inception, there has been a Minyan EVERY DAY to accommodate those who are saying Kaddish or for those observing a Yahrzeit.
Paperman Listings
Our volunteers post condolences from Shaare Zedek on the Paperman website to the family on the passing of their loved one.
Volunteers Needed
We require your help to ensure that we can continue to carry out these outreach activities and programs. Any amount of time you can offer will be much appreciated. To find out the opportunities that are available to you, please contact Len Miller or Mark Merson.

Joint Minyanim with Shaare Zion Beth-El
I started attending Shaare Zedek to say kaddish for Lili’s mother. I felt welcomed by those who were also saying kaddish and by those who attended synagogue on a daily basis like Arthur Newman, Leon Penn and Allan Zuckerman. From them I learned the importance of the daily minyan and the minyanaires. The Rabbi and Chazan are the mind and soul of the synagogue but the minyan is its heart. Sadly, as years pass we lose members of the minyanaires and I remember so many days and evenings looking at the clock waiting and hoping that we will have enough people in synagogue for a minyan. The passing of time and loss of minyanaires has had the same effect on Shaare Zion Beth-El (SZBE). In December 2022, board members and clergy from both congregations got together and worked out a weekly schedule of daily services. One week at Shaare Zedek and one week at SZBE. I had certain apprehensions about this decision and the first thing that came to mind was: where was I going to park? Oddly enough, that was the same worry of some of the members from SZBE. Even in the dead of winter, it was never a huge issue.
Once the joint sessions started, both groups were happy with the outcome. There was the occasional snicker here and there of which group brought more to the services but that quickly ended when we all realized how happy we were to know we had full daily minyans. So much so that the initial decision to go until April was extended. Now the big question is who has a better breakfast?
Shaare
- a very special place
Our Shaare Zedek is a very special place. The warmth and inclusiveness is palpable. Wherever you turn there is a friendly face to offer help or just a warm hello. I give my time to the shul to help with whatever needs to be done as when I am here I feel happy and fulfilled. I feel lucky that in my retirement I can volunteer to do work that is needed and appreciated.

B’nai Mitzvah Program
This past year has been a tremendous success. We had a kick-off meeting in the Fall with the students and their parents to explain what the program is all about. The Bar or Bat Mitzvah has a long history in Jewish tradition. Students learn their parsha and synagogue rituals through their teachers. The B’nai Mitzvah program helps fill in some of the cultural experiences that inspire and bind us together as a Jewish community. Early in the season, we played basketball to get to know each other. The evening with Auberge Shalom, women’s shelter, was an eye opener and provoked many questions. The visit to Paperman & Sons hosted by Ross Paperman was nothing short of amazing. Ross demystified how to handle Jewish deaths in a most dignified way and personally connected with each of the students. At the end, the students got to ride in a limo which was a hoot. Heritage Night was particularly interesting as each student presented a photo, letter, artifact, or something of interest from their family. A mini Torah survived the holocaust and made its way to Argentina and then to Canada. A postcard from an ancestor in Europe has great meaning for one family. Each story was fascinating. Every student is required to do a Mitzvah (good deed) Project which they presented at the family Kabbalat Shabbat in May. It was quite remarkable hearing about volunteering at Mada to help pack meals or working with seniors. The program for next year has been expanded and will be launched in September. More news to come.
